    Small tip. Instead of using ADB commands, you could just use the media player select source service call. If you have the shield media player intergrated into homeassistant using ADB that is. Easier for most than using custom ADB commands.

    Does it have to have Alexa? Is a direct Zigbee integration to home assistant possible or will that only be possible when matter integration is enabled?

    I am also stoked with my flic twists purchase. I have lifx in my house (I'm Australian, and haven't had the issues that many have had with them) and it works seamlessly. I had chosen the scene blender, but wasn't aware that the selector function wasn't available on the standard twist function. I have one twist for 2 spaces (lounge and kitchen) and was thinking of resetting it to put it in that selector mode, but thanks to your video, I won't bother to do that now. I was disappointed that I couldn't use the twist for volume control on my analogue speakers via the ir blaster, but now that I have the twists, it frees up my flic 2 buttons, so I can use them with the blaster and have a button for up and one for down instead. I've been inching towards getting home assistant anyway, so I think this is the push to do exactly that to add extra functionality. 🤘🏼 Cheers

  • @Hersee
    @Hersee 5 місяців тому +12

    It's also bi-directional with some devices. eg. Sonos. If you adjust the volume via another method and then go to the twist, the current LEDs on the twist light up to the current volume! Brilliant. Now if only they would enable us to implement bidirectional feedback via http or home assistant so that we can add support for other devices.

    I would be interested in the more technical bits mentioned such as ADB etc. ALSO, one needs a hub - I believe the two hub models have different functionality. Are these devices WiFi or what? You didn't mention batteries or battery life. Maybe a follow up video covering these points would be welcome. I also not that the flic website says that "Matter is coming in 2023" - we're already there! Many thanks for all your most enjoyable and interesting reviews.

    Hi Paul great coverage and happy to see an alternative perspective on the flic twists, I personally and a SmartThings user so if possible it would be ideal to see how one could make the most of it via that method as personally I wont go near Alex, and have yet to dive into HA. It is curious though as I have been able to set up manual routines via ST and assign those to the Flic Twist with (so far) not much issues. I am trying to future proof via ways of buying Matter devices primarily so obviously the Matter update should open this device right up but I do like the idea of being able to harness the likes of a projector or other media devices and get impressive automations to trigger from a flic twist.
    So an in depth tutorial would be highly helpful and I think if you can cover of as many platforms users might have would be great, might be worth doing one to follow up after the release of the matter video too.
    Keep up the work, your one of the staples for helping my journey to grow a smart home.

    Awesome presentation as usual. I would love to know the sources for the code you are using. This seems like a cloud-based system, but I am still interested in the tech, especially because the component isn't white, so it won't discolor. so easily. Here's a million-dollar concept...get these manufacturers to offer a chrome plated option as well as black or white. If I want a wood grain look, I will find the right covering myself. Obviously, the tech side comes first but having options to make these devices easier to see or hide has some benefits too. Thanks again for all you do and Have a great new year sir.

    I’m about to get into Home Assistant (yes, I know) and am looking to see if the Raspberry Pi5 will be a good base point to get started. I blame you for convincing me that I could actually set it up, but my wife and kids will DEFINITELY blame me when it breaks down 😂 ). Still waiting on my Dial and buttons order with mini hub from ages ago and been met with radio silence about why it has been taking so long. Their Flic2 buttons and Hub LR are mostly reliable (when they don’t desynchronise from Alexa) but I’m not inspired by the way things are with the Dial kit order I placed last year. I hope they are better at communicating with you. This thing looks like it could be really, really useful, but I can’t confidently order more until they get the order I placed last year to me.
    Love the channel, but if my virginity grows back after getting into Home Assistant, there will be trouble ‼️

    Since you have the customization of putting stickers on it .... I think having an OLED or e-paper display around the outside ring would be really good for the next interation.

    I think I achieve a similar setup with some 4-button (2x2 grid) Moes buttons. They don't rotate, which does look cool (although a bit awkward having to hold the button down), but each button has a single and double tap as well as a hold action, so can do 12 things as standard, with more things if you chain them using Home Assistant's 'wait for trigger' action in automations.
    As you say in the video, you don't generally need the full dimming range, so our buttons switch between bright and dim modes with either different press/hold triggers or automatically based on time of day.
    I really want to need one of these because they look so cool, but I just can't see where it would fit in our home (for now)

More choice, more opportunities to help! Funilly i lost my voice for a week with the current lurgy, you have no idea how frustrating not having voice controll suddenly is, to a blind guy who has been using it for several years! It pays to have more than one way to do things! Sadly, they dont pay me enough to buy new stuff, so i won't be buying any until they appear second hand on ebay! Programmatically when you hold and twist, the action on release of the button would set that position as an ending point, thus triggering a single action. If you don't hold the button and just twist it, depending on if you twist it slow it fast, it could accidentally interrupt each designated spot as an action and cause it to do every action, basically one after the other.
    At least this is what I'm assuming based on being a programming nerd myself. 😉

    Hi Paul, a few things you seemed to miss out (assuming I didn’t miss you mentioning them).
    1. Those stickers are home made and do not come with the device. They sell some pretty poor stickers for an additional cost (what did you use to create yours?).
    2. You need a hub with these and there are two hubs, the mini hub and the LR hub. The LR hub is more expensive but better suited to those who really like to dabble with complex smart home set ups. However, the reason I got the LR hub is that it allows the plugging in of an IR blaster, which means you can control TV volume or anything IR (cheap Christmas lights with remote controls all made smart with a bit of programming in the app and learning of the IR signals). I think there is possibly some Bluetooth only functionality that uses your phone instead of a hub, but that is limited and might not work with the twist the way you are showing. It also means they will only work when in range of the phone they are set up with.
    3. This is the biggest of your omissions. When setting up multiple selection points on the dial, 12 o clock is the default and always defaults back to that function after 10 seconds. So let’s say you’ve set up 3 o’clock to control Spotify and 12 o’clock is to turn your lights on and off. When you turn to the Spotify function and press the button to play and then three minutes later you want to pause as you showed in your video with your pause button, the Twist will have defaulted back to the lights and pressing the button will turn your lights off or on and will not control Spotify anymore until you turn the dial back to 3 o’clock and press the button.
    I was a backer on Kickstarter and we told them this last point was a no go to be the only functioning option. I can understand why they have done it, but you should have the option to retain the Twist at its last used function or to default back to 12 o’clock as setting and not forced upon us. Shortcut Labs have told us lots of lies throughout the kickstarter and hidden many of the ways it wouldn’t function quite as advertised. They have also said they are focused purely on adding matter support (which was said to be part of the feature set two years ago when pitched and still does not come out of the box and is still not present). So I’d take anything Shortcut Labs say about adding features or fixing issues with a pinch of salt as they do not fulfil their promises and their communications team is appalling. Maybe you can use some of your influence to actually help us backers out and feed this back to Shortcut Labs as they are not interested in user feedback from actual consumers.

      1. Photoshop and some sticky back vinyl I had kicking around. If anyone wants it then it’s here: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07QH1GW4G?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
      It never occurred to me mention the sticker was home made, I didn’t do a great job of it, you can see where it overlaps, and the Disney logo ended up printing pretty badly.
      2. Am I wrong in thinking you can actually pair this to any android device and use it without a hub? I’m sure in the near future it will also work directly with home assistant using the onboard Bluetooth. You’re right though, in my example I am using their hub.
      3. I don’t follow on this one. I programmed the single click to do a thing, it does that thing every time I click it, doesn’t matter where the dial is turned. 🤷🏻‍♂️
      As for Matter support; Shortcut labs CEO has given me assurances that Matter is their only goal right now as they’re not able to do half the stuff that they had planned due to the limitations of the individual platforms, HomeKit being a particularly big let down.
      I suspect from our lengthy interaction they are suitably embarrassed by a lot of the failed expectations, he never went as far as to tell me why they had expected to deliver more than they have but the email was certainly heart felt. My own view in this is that he was misled in some way as to what could be achieved, either by his own team, or by the individual companies the device is supposed to interact with.
      I still believe very much in Shortcut labs as a company as they are always remarkably open with me. If they say Matter support is on the way then I believe them.

    So the Flic Twist is a pretty capable device as long as you're not trying to use it and HomeKit. I do have to admit that your bedroom demo shows off the device quite well. Hopefully they can sort out the HomeKit issues soon.

    It would make sense if Flic made it so you can choose how many points on the dial are usable. If you only need 4, to make dimming lights easier, then leave it at 4 points. If you want more, select it in the app.

    • @nefariou5
      @nefariou5 5 місяців тому

      yup, if you only want to run actions at quarter points then leave the other points blank. it's odd that it wasn't obvious to flic in the first place

    until you said it a HTTP interface i figured it was just another product but thats amazing. A large part of the internets communication uses HTTP/S for back and forth data and yet for some reason google apple and amazon came together and thought hmmm lets create a closed source protocol just for devices inside a home to talk to each other and devices makers have to pay for..

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  5 місяців тому

      Created it myself. I had some sticky back shiny paper left over from another project, so I just took a picture of their dial from Google and put it in photoshop, measured the dial in real life and stretched it in photoshop to be the same size. I then drew around the dial in photoshop where I would need to cut it and then added the logos by hand before printing and cutting very carefully.
      I did discover that the dial is slightly concave which you’ll notice my sticker overlaps as a consequence. I could probably have cut it in such a way that the edges would meet 🙂👍🏻

    Very interesting product. Been waiting for it for ages. Do you know if you can choose the different Spotify playlist and have them play through Sonos speakers? That would be my main use, but I can't find any info on this😅😅 Thanks from Copenhagen!

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  4 місяці тому +1

      There is a Sonos integration for it, so you can alter volume and stuff and you may be able to do it through there, but if not the Spotify integration should allow for this as you can choose the speaker it plays from :)

      Apparently, you need a hub. The buttons don't need a hub and can be used on your phone, but the twist needs it. There seems to be a bundle to get the twist and the mini hub together for 100 dollars where the mini hub is 40 and the twist is 80 by themselves.

      Once you set it to Alexa and it tells you there’s no configurable options when you press save it will appear in Alexa as a device with the name of whatever you called it in the flicker app. From there you can use the “device” to trigger routines 😁

    • @Techlifeandmore
      @Techlifeandmore 5 місяців тому +1

      It will probably be available on this version of the flick twist, since the issue is software-based. Quite obviously, the device can read all 12 points of rotation, it's just not allowing all 12 of those points to be exposed when you're not pressing and holding the device.
