I had the G4 mW setting to "standard" the way it came default out of the box. Since I am not that familiar with laws in the USA for wireless I left it on Standard because I was not sure if High was not allowed in the US. There is also a low setting, so it must have been on the middle 30mW setting. My G3 can only be used at 30mW, so it was a fair fight as far as I am concerned.
Thanks to James Drake for helping out!

I agree that the ME2 II is a nice step forward in terms of audio quality. Thanks for doing this Dave!
What is "clear skin" at 01:54
I found out. "Clear scan" ;-) I didn't know this name.
Clear Scan, sorry.
Curtis Judd, MKE2 II...... What do you know about MKE2 II (MKE2 Gold Blue?) versus MKE2 I (MKE2 Gold?) ? Is it about improved digital shielding?
And for anyone using Sennheiser-lavs with recorder that has normal non-locking 1/8” socket (TRS),
do you have other solutions than... “Pinknoise Systems PNCC-3.5S-RA3.5L” ?
Dave Dugdale, do you prefer Rode Lavalier over Sennheiser MKE2 or you haven’t compared them directly?
Sorry, mistype on my original comment. I was referring to the ME2II, not the MKE2. I have used the MKE2 a couple of years ago. Not sure whether that was the Gold or Blue Gold. The MKE2 is far superior to the ME2, of course.
Question: Have you noticed that the wireless mics for the Sennheiser need to be replaced often due to static? Or is it that I need to do a clear scan?
Love the content that guys like you and curtis judd create. Very helpful and detailed. Great work. Love from India.
GREAT info, Dave! Thanks.
Crazy timing, I was just using my G3 and realized that it’s probably one of the best pieces of equipment I have, even though I probably take it for granted.
Great comparison Dave!
This is a great test!
Always a great video!
The G4 sounds richer, but I seem to hear what is being said better on the G3, although the Esses are certainly a bit much (on my speakers).
Very nice, would have been interesting to also see how it compares to the Sennheiser AVX lav system
Have you ever tried either lav system with a better microphone such as a Sanken COS 11D?
In terms of tone, this is more of a test of the MKE2 GOLD vs the ME2 rather than G3 vs G4. In terms of testing RF dropouts, I'd be curious if both systems were tuned to the same frequency independently. That is, if the G3 scanned first and got the cleanest channel leaving the G4 on a worse channel.
This really a test between different lav elements. The MKE 2 Gold is much higher quality Lav element compared to the ME2 It's like a comparing a Neuman KM104 handheld to a 30$ radio shack dynamic mic.
The G3, which I own, sounded good. I liked the slightly bassier sound of the G4 but they were almost the same. Really close...
That's surprising about all the RF hits you were getting. Now I'm not interested in the G4/500 series. If I were going for another mid-level wireless, I'd find another G3. Where I live in Eureka CA I have yet to get an RF hit! I'm way out in hicksville I guess. I didn't even know about "clear scan" because I've never changed the frequency. I just assumed that these were amazing wireless units. I also see the G3 a lot in audio bags alongside the 2,000.00 per channel packs.
I thought the g4 was a good bit better. Wearing high end ear buds atm. I'm sure you could adjust the eq and have them sound similar. The g4 just sounded smoother in the low mids.
Hi Doug, great video as always.
Have you had any dealings with the Sennheiser AVX system?
I've had less interference with it. I may make a video comparing
I really like Sennheiser lav mics but analog radio system is too old and catches a lot of noise&interference. I've bought Rode Filmmaker Kit recently. It have digital transmitter&receiver and sounds loud&clear at any conditions. As a professional sound director I never loved Rode mics but Filmaker Kit is really great. Try it.
How do these compare to their AVX systems?
Not scientific, but using some scientific methods for testing. Nicely done as usual!!!
I could live with either. The G3 is brighter and perhaps a bit harsher, but the G4 also perhaps sounds a tiny bit darker or "cupped" or muffled - very slightly.
I agree, that's a good way to describe it
I agree
I thought the G4 sounded a little richer - a little more low & mid-range. But it wasn't a huge difference.
And it's not like the G3 sounded bad.
I don't think it would take long with EQ in post to get them very close.
If I already had the G3, no way would I pay the money for the newer G4 system.
Hi, Dave: When outdoors, did you try increasing the G4 500 transmitter power to 50 mW?
I had it set to "standard" the way it came default out of the box. Since I am not that familiar with laws in the USA for wireless I left it on Standard because I was not sure if High was not allowed in the US. There is also a low setting, so it must have been on the middle 30mW setting. My G3 can only be used at 30mW, so it was a fair fight as far as I am concerned.
I agree that it was a fair comparison and the topic of this video was not to compare the 500 series with the 100 series. Just wondered if you had tried the 50 mW setting. Keep up the great work!
I think the difference only in mics. MKE 2 is just souns better then MK 2.
the G3 is clearer but also more trebly sounding and maybe harsher, the G4 is a little less clear but maybe smoother, I'm not sure if either of them has great sound, I think you should take the free offer, it wouldn't make me think any less of you.
Its weird at first the G3 sounds much better, but later around the 3 minute mark the G4 sounds better when listening to for a good minute
Why not use something like a zoom H1 to get rid of ffft. Is it because you can't verify it's working in your headphones?
Would you ever film blind with a camera that has no monitoring?
noise from wireless systems is driving me MAD! why not to remove it digitally in system, since the data transfer is DIGITAL...
thank you David!
G3 sounds great and better
Sound same, G4 should have better frequency scanning
Why not USE the digital versjon for such work?
?
Macarena the AVX system, changes the frequency on the run, no need to scan for the best frequency.
For numerous reasons it is inferior. But personally, I wouldn't want to use either. On a very very low budget I prefer the Sony UWP-D11 instead.
The G4 sounds flat, less top end.
The Sennheiser AVX System blows these away.
Nope, don't like the form factor / ergo or even worse the latency!
i thought the g4 sounded better
The G4 has a better mic.
