The cadence of your speech has such a naturally perfect comedic timing, I'm in awe every time. Also I get the struggle of the yard work. Every time I sit down to film they start blasting out there
I love your use of vocabulary, Charles. The way you speak and the words you choose strike that perfect balance of being interesting and intelligent without being pretentious. You just speak and sound like someone well read. Goals.
I can watch you do anything, you are one of the few interesting people left on YT and all you do is talk about books. I can only imagine the things you can do if you decide to branch out. Im excited for you!!!!!!
Charles, how can you say you didn’t like Jekyll and Hyde when it has one of the greatest jokes in classic literature??? “If he shall be Mr. Hyde, I shall be Mr. Seek” ????? Iconic.
"If I want a Greek retelling I will pick up a Mary Renault book". And that's precisely why I love you. And please don't get mad about the occasional outside noise, we can't even hear that, I swear.
I read Age of Innocence recently and think it is worthwhile, especially in this day and age. The ending might have redeemed it at least somewhat for you. I can't explain why it might be a valuable read without spoiling it for people who haven't read it yet. It was beautifully written, and many of the thoughts expressed in it were very insightful and, I thought, rather brilliant.
I agree. The characters weren’t good people but I think that was the point Wharton was making. I didn’t like the story (cheating sucks) but I’ve thought about the ending since I finished it in Jan 2023
@cs0p hey, one more thing. Martin Scorsese made it into a movie that came out in 1993. I watched some clips from it on YT after finishing the book. The screenwriter(s) didn't have to write anything. Every word was Edith Wharton's (although the filmmaker added a mild makeout session that wasn't in the book). So, you might consider watching it first.
Housekeeping by Marilynn Robinson is sooooo good. My boyfriend and I planned a whole trip through Idaho based around it, and we live in Florida. The vibes are immaculately gloomy.
i feel like you’re very fickle with your opinions. while i’m still holding out hope on you reading perfume (which i’m certain you’ll love), if you want a better version of what madeleine miller does try suzanna clarke. she writes fantasy in a literary fiction manner (but not in magical realism way dw) both “jonathan strange & mr norrell” and “piranesi” which is soo much better than circe. however, if you still take my recommendations with a grain of salt, if you want good nonfiction, i adore “the hour of our death” by philippe aries.
i just feel like making an "ironic" joke about still hating black people when discussing a book about a SLAVERY survivor and civil rights movement was a poor choice... the video was so nice up until that point and it genuinely disappointed me... You seem like a very smart, responsable and good of heart guy so i hope this was just a one time bad joke out of over stimulation due to the gardening noises ♡ that said this video motivated me to clean out my pile of dnfs and just useless books i have laying around around my place 😅 - yasmine
Beloved by Toni Morrison??? It''s literally my favourite Morrison, and she's my fav author. Gave it initially 4-stars but it left me with such a strong impression I changed it to 5-stars after a few weeks
What a funny fucking video. I haven’t actually laughed in a long time while watching YT. It’s so wonderful to see someone who is not scared to make a joke and who isn’t bothered but all the pearl-clutching that will inevitably appear in the comments. Subscribed.

“The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Eréndira and Her Heartless Grandmother,” is the Marquez follow-up to Melancholy Whore that you need. It’s a novella for extra incentive.
I finally finished The Lord of the Rings this year, and the bottom line is, I'm glad it's over! I finished the trilogy and then found that there were long appendices, much of which needed reading also for a more comprehensive understanding of the characters and story--for example, where the characters came from, and details about the natures of the various races; how all their lives turned out; how, at what age, and under what circumstances they died; and where they were buried. There were many great and profound thoughts and lines that were quoteworthy and well worth remembering. I would have highlighted many passages, but I have a nice volume and didn't want to mark it up :(.
Yes, I agree about different mediums for different stories- the movie Black Klansman was really good. Spike Lee makes the viewer experience the anxiety of the protagonists. ❤
Hi i am a new subscriber to your original and lovely channel . I said this in previous comment, but my name is Ana Anyway thank you, thank you so much about your opinion regarding Ayn Rand, you are the only person that I know that like her. Recently I recommend books by Ayn Rand to my friend ,and she said that the writing was boring and repetitive by the way she didn't like Donna Tartt either which broke my heart a little. I am joyful that someone like Ayn Rand maybe equally as me!
Almost finished atlas shrugged on your recommendation. My mind is still trying to process. Check out prequel by falling in reverse (watch the music video too) I think it’s a good short summary
Calling beloved “pleasant” is actually so absurd I can’t say anything but racism, or, hopefully, you just didn’t understand what was going on. Maybe worth a more intentional read when you’re older.
@@water4112 it’s about a formerly-enslaved woman whose house is haunted but the ghost of the daughter she murdered so that she wouldn’t be taken from her and sold to another plantation as a slave. it’s also based on a true story. it is anything but pleasant
Spoiler: Ethan Frome ends with the young couple deciding to off themselves together of all ways, on a sled? The girl dies the boy lives though he is really messed up. Superman sad. I was forced to read it in high school.
I always give away books every year cause don't have the room to keep them all in an apartement. It would be fun if you read horror for upcoming Halloween. Hope you take the challenge.
I’m sad that you won’t be finishing Ethan Frome, because it’s one of my favourite novels. But you’re right; it does have a similar tone to Wuthering Heights, so maybe you’re right to not continue with it, ha ha. I agree with you on Wharton’s writing - it’s not remarkable, though quite elegant. I couldn’t get into The Age of Innocence either, but I think I made the mistake of watching the Scorcese adaptation first. Which was good by the way, even though I didn’t like the main character Newland. Michelle Pfeiffer as Countess Olenska was quite sympathetic though. I’d recommend the film. You might enjoy it 😊

Funny enough, I read all of Toni Morrison's books this year since she's one of my biggest inspirations as a writer. I think every American should read Beloved, it's probably the truest story of our country and people need to digest that. I think a lot of things would be solved and understood if they did.
