Thanks for the simple instruction. Good for someone like me who never heard of this camera until today. With a few more videos like this I would feel confident using one. Good work.
I just bought a second hand one... Getting it on Monday. I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve!!! Good heavens, I'm so excited I can't sleep... just pouring over reviews and tutorials. Like for instance, one of the minor things I noted was that I should look at the Tangerine Matte box! Awesome tutorial, very helpful and thank you!!! Liked and subscribed!!! (BTW I know this is like three years old, but I'm a commercial photographer and videographer... I hope my clients note an improvement in the quality of the video! Been on the GH4 and the GH5 near on 5 years. And now a Red is within the reach of us one man band guys!!! What an amazing age to live in?!
Hey thank you for this video! many people are complaining about your explanation of basic things that those interested in the camera should already know. I have decided to go back to school for video editing (hello midlife crisis) and I don't know anything about cameras. We were to critique a video that used this camera to shoot it. I needed an explanation of what it was. I look forward to coming back to this in a few months so that I can understand more about the technical terms you are talking about. Keep up the great work!
Great tutoring...you actually explained some of the basics about digital terms and their relation to one another. I'm only a still amateur but have heard a lot about Red Epic...well now now I know a little bit more...amazing technology and thank you for the video!
Nope, he is using the scarlet, but I think he will upgrade to the dragon soon, I'm a big fan of the camera, I have tried it out a couple of times. It's just amazing!
Hello! I'm working with the Epic-x mysterium-x and i would like to understand how can i use the HDRX files, it's only on RED cinema or i can use those on DaVinci. How FLUTS works? Thanks to anyone who answers
With the HDRx function will that work with fast motion or will the frames not match up? I notice when I use HDR on my Nikon D800E it only works well with still subjects as you get a funny double image happening on object motion..
HDRx sounds cool, in theory you could shoot like fire and a dark black cat ( unlit ) and sun all properly exposed in one frame... Curious what exactly he means by clean image at iso 2000, I'm guessing even at 1600 there's a bit of noticeable noise. Maybe it's not an issue for an indie feature drama but a clean modern music video I'm guessing 800 is the most one should go? If you could really shoot at iso 2000 I could save money by not renting lights and just shoot avail light. Also one must have an AC on set or do any of you guys pull focus yourselves I've heard it's doable. Also what do you guys use to go handheld? I guess if you shoot in 6k it doesn't matter you can just stabilize in post. Trying to decide if I should shoot my next music vid with my 5d MK3 or rent one of these. I directed a music vid shot on dragon it came out pro but I didn't DP it.
hi... thanks for this video, it helps me lot but... can you tell me the details of Image sensor size of Red cameras all models and setting of video, which will be the best for professional film shooting, like Saturation, contrast, sharpness and all
what is the recommended computer specs for editing the r3d footages? and by editing i mean the whole shebang. standard offline to online editing no vfx.
I'm not sure if those are "features" but RED has worked hard to make moire and aliasing pretty non-existent on these cameras, especially when done at a low compression ratio
So many keyboard warriors slagging off your production values with no videos of their own on their channels. :) Hahahah UA-cam Heroes make me laugh. Irrespective of the issues you are aware of, the video was pretty informative. Not many like this on the Dragon.
Short answer...yes it will work. Dragon sensor is large, but not as large as a full-frame sensor found in something like a 5D. It's larger by a bit compared to traditional S35. If any lens you are using has coverage issues you can "window" in the sensor to make sure you are getting good coverage. The 6K HD setting I find covers most lenses in most situations, and still gjves you a 6K image.
Surprised not many guys are using the Nikon D800 instead of the Canon. It has a much nicer image especially in the shadows. The canon always looks to contrasty and enhanced with compressed blacks ..
Would you recommend buying the Red Epic dragon used over a brand new red scarlet w since they're about the same price ?! Btw Has anybody used both of these cameras to shoot commercials and films ?
So, if I shoot this camera at 1080 and then I shoot at 6k but I downsample to 1080 the two shots will be different and the second will be better in terms of quality? I didn't know that.
crazyRyoga Exactly like how 35mm movies from Blockbuster looked much better on VHS than home videos did, or a feature film still looks better at 240p on UA-cam than a webcam at the same resolution. The higher quality the source material, the better it'll look down-sampled to a lesser medium.
+crazyRyoga Lots of games now do that if you have a monstrous GPU, they render for something like 2880x1620 then downsample to your native 1920x1080 and the quality is much finer to the point that you don't need to use any other sampling technique to remove jaggy edges.
+Polymer Clay Artist it takes 30 minute to take one picture cost you can't find correct setting even if you did you'll be will unsatisfied because you'll think i should have bought 8k. greedy, imagine world first camera and be thankful that you got decent 720p camera watchable...
Rob Fraser photography is all about taking picture that is unique... even $10 camera's picture can be Photoshop to make it look like its taken from this 30k camera. son i am not interested on photography not like i don't know
I'm having some issues with my red audio. When I record audio I can hear the count of the timecode, it's almost like a fluttering sound. How does this even appear in the audio when I have a scratch mic? Nobody can seem to solve this issue and I want to make sure this does not happen in a big project. Thanks.
This is a major milestone in camera technology because a digital camera has surpassed film in dynamic range. Formerly, color negative film provided the most possible dynamic range at 16 stops, but now a digital cinema camera delivers 16.5!?!
Interesting! So that’s why a lot of new video I just don’t like the look as as much as the 80s - 2000 cameras. Some of the footage around that time just had such a good feel. To many digital downsides and options now.
Thanks for the simple instruction. Good for someone like me who never heard of this camera until today. With a few more videos like this I would feel confident using one. Good work.

Please set same WB in angles.... please...
We rushed this video with about 5 min of setup time since the cameras were needed on set ASAP, so in our haste we had some color balance issues
BrainBox Cameras Ever heard of colour correction in davinci/redcine, etc, etc... ;^>

Unnecessary bashing. Just appreciate the knowledge he's sharing and don't nitpick. He did a hell of a job, quick straight to the point. Good job guys!
well said....great job
Great tutoring...you actually explained some of the basics about digital terms and their relation to one another. I'm only a still amateur but have heard a lot about Red Epic...well now now I know a little bit more...amazing technology and thank you for the video!
Makes video about one of the best cameras in the game, shots have different WB, subject is out of focus, audio is bad.

Oh lord, this is what MKBHD uses to shoot is UA-cam videos
Nope, he is using the scarlet, but I think he will upgrade to the dragon soon, I'm a big fan of the camera, I have tried it out a couple of times. It's just amazing!

Hello! I'm working with the Epic-x mysterium-x and i would like to understand how can i use the HDRX files, it's only on RED cinema or i can use those on DaVinci.
How FLUTS works?
Thanks to anyone who answers
would you recommend buying this camera today but used ??? if it's in a good condition do you think its worth buying it and used accessories too ??
Is there a way to turn on focus zebras / focus assist? I’m coming from using an BlackMagic Ursa the zebras to show what’s in focus was lovely.
which sensormode should I pick to shoot with an 1,5x Anamorphic?
great review. Thanks. and the RED WEAPON looks even more amazing- in particular with a smaller form factor and the mini mag on the side.
With the HDRx function will that work with fast motion or will the frames not match up? I notice when I use HDR on my Nikon D800E it only works well with still subjects as you get a funny double image happening on object motion..
what are red's used for filing music videos?

1:50 besides the file size/memory consumption, what are the draw backs of HDRx?

what's the best way to sync time code between two red dragons? abox?
Does this camera also have moire and aliasing. 2 features DSLR and mirrorless camera makers seem to always add to their cameras.
I'm not sure if those are "features" but RED has worked hard to make moire and aliasing pretty non-existent on these cameras, especially when done at a low compression ratio

I think you did not color correct or balance your camera one and camera two videos ?
We rushed this video with about 5 min of setup time since the cameras were needed on set ASAP, so in our haste we had some color balance issues
Brainbox is a great rental house. Good group of guys.
a video about an amazing camera with ungraded and no synchronised clips.... great job
OMG the Red Dragon is more scarier than red epic!
Has the Dragon a super 35 or full Frame Sensor...because i would you the canon cine Zooms and i dont kone if that work....could you help me?

How does a Xenar III compare to an Ultra Prime or a Master Prime?
Xenar III's compare very favorably to Ultra Primes.... Master Primes though are still on another level.
Surprised not many guys are using the Nikon D800 instead of the Canon. It has a much nicer image especially in the shadows. The canon always looks to contrasty and enhanced with compressed blacks ..
Awesome video, thank you!
Red dragan ki praij kya hai ?
Thanks for sharing this, this was very helpful.
This is the camera I use for daily vlogs.
How do you afford this?
Thank you BrainBox great video.
Would you recommend buying the Red Epic dragon used over a brand new red scarlet w since they're about the same price ?! Btw Has anybody used both of these cameras to shoot commercials and films ?

how do people afford this! with money?
Anything higher than 1080p resolution I don't really see the difference. Its not like I'm counting the pixels.
Holy crap that is a wicked camera... I just got a 4k camera and now I'm having to update my PC xD I wonder how much one costs?
Polymer Clay Artist Not sure if i found the right price but the one i found is about €17.695,00
+Polymer Clay Artist it takes 30 minute to take one picture cost you can't find correct setting even if you did you'll be will unsatisfied because you'll think i should have bought 8k. greedy, imagine world first camera and be thankful that you got decent 720p camera watchable...

I love how the video isn't in 4k
Yup, not enough 4k cameras to film 4k cameras at the time, so we shot on C300s
excellent review/tutorial dude! question: when using HDRx does it take a lot more ssd space? or the RED is only providing more metadata?
I suppose this could be a great place to start a flame nikon vs canon.
how do you format the red code card?
In the camera!
I'm having some issues with my red audio. When I record audio I can hear the count of the timecode, it's almost like a fluttering sound. (-________________-)
How much does this even cost?
Thanks for the vid👍🏾👍🏾
thanks for the base walkthrough
I wish it did up to 120fps playback speed
You can do up to 120fps! Actually in 2k mode I believe it goes up to 300fps
Are you sure the export file can be set at 120p instead of 59.94p?
Nice camera, but it looks really complicated!
Red cameras! thank you Lord
this video was very inspiring...
This is a major milestone in camera technology because a digital camera has surpassed film in dynamic range. Formerly, color negative film provided the most possible dynamic range at 16 stops, but now a digital cinema camera delivers 16.5!?!
