  • I've had the GX8 for a year now and love it, but the gx80 gives me some new features so time for a change.

    I've been a pro tog for over forty years, and now use M43 as my main system - I have other 'bigger and better' gear but my kit of choice is now a pair of GX80s. I do a lot of video work, and the lack of mic input is no problem at all - coming from a film background, I always record critical audio on a proper audio recording device anyway.

    Thank you for all the great videos, I have been watching them and trying to decide what would be best for me. The struggle is real. I shoot Nikon but I do enjoy the idea of a smaller camera. Thanks again for putting in all the time and hard work

    GX8 ;
    Excellent Viewfinder, Weather sealed, articulated LCD and protection, lots of custom buttons for pro use, 20MP that has more crop ability, great balance with tele lenses like 100-400mm, not small not big, wonderful grip, max 1/8000 shutter speed (mechanical), NFC etc.
    GX85 (GX80) ;
    Additional stability for video, internal flash, smaller, cheaper, new shutter mechanism, No AA filter etc.

      For me a built-in flash is a clear disadvantage (it's an amateur request IMHO)! Except of the better IBIS and the lower price on the GX80 this camera has nothing I would prefer over the GX8. I specially like the tilting view finder! The fact that the GX8 is weathersealed while the GX80 isn't, is a deal breaker! :D

    Would you (or your viewers) have any idea why I can't upgrade the firmware on a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 to ver. 2.2? It currently has ver. 1.1. I've downloaded the upgrade from Panasonic's website twice and followed the procedure precisely. Fully-charged battery, SD card formatted in camera, etc. I sure could use some help with this. Thanks!

    Love your videos Harry - they tend to focus on the stuff that you actually want to know :)
    Regarding this video - I have the GX8 and would love to have the stabilization from the GX80 in it to be able to do video with my non-stabilized lenses without a tripod - and I also love the solid/heavy feel of the GX80, similar to the Olympus cameras.
    Hoverver in my case I will have to stick to the GX8 for now, mainly because I shoot a lot with manual lenses and need:
    1. The big ultra sharp EVF that easily lets me get what I want in focus! (the focus peaking is not accurate enough to rely on)
    2. The ability to tilt the EVF to be able to take sharp pictures lower to the ground with manual lenses on bright sunny days
    3. ..and also less important - but as I only use the EVF to shoot (with AF-lenses also) I like the ability to protect the screen by turning it inwards the camera
    Thats pretty much it - if I only had AF-lenses I would probably do as you and replace the GX8 for the stabilization and the more solid feel of the GX80 :)

    Love this, photo of my mate Chris skating! I have a crap GX7 second hand but loving its small form factor and cheap price... Love it so much I want a slightly better variation for safer countries! GX80 might be it, although my GX7 jog wheel was broken when I bought it so I know the GX80 jog wheel will most certainly suffer the same fate.

    Maybe for a Christmas special you could show us all your camera gear and describe what you use them for. I see there is an RX100 lurking in the background too.

    Nice Harry got me thinking if I'd prefer the GX80 mainly the stabilisation, how bigger difference are the vfs heard a lot of people say the 80 is poor in comparison

  • @krisdodo90

    which one better for video shooting? I've seen some people make a test for IBIS on gx8 and gx 80, the result gx 80 better than gx8 on stabillization..

    Can you use the GX80 while it's being charged from a portable battery pack or similar device?. Not many cameras can do that except the Samsung NX300/NX500.

    • @skylarnagao6847
      @skylarnagao6847 7 років тому

      Nope. I have the GX80/85 and when the camera is on and plugged in to a power source you will receive a message "Please turn off camera to begin charge". Excellent camera though.

    Good evening Harry - hope all is well - just wondering if you still feel the same way about the GX80 over the GX8? I'm about to purchase one of these 2 (secondhand) and plan to only use for stills photography - wanting the form factor of the rangefinder style so managed to rule out the G80 etc - thanks again for all the videos you take the time out to produce :)

    I love both and have both - I love the back scroll wheel on the GX80/5 - which I missed on the GX8 - of course I like the size a bit better on the GX80 - but I also miss the awesome EVF in the GX8 -
    The shutter is nicer in the GX80 - and I like that it does not have an AA filter -
    I do not miss the class as I use external flash - Godox v850 with wireless trigger ( fantastic flash and awesome battery )
    The GX8 has the total flip LCD - which for video is great - but i do mostly stills so I prefer the tilt LCD - but I love the fully articulated LCD as one can close it and protect the LCD -
    I wish they can make one that will do both -
    I have also the older GX7 - which i of course like - but I miss the new features of the GX80 - so I think I will upgrade the GX7 to a GX80 as soon as prices come down a bit or I find one used at a good price -
    of course like you said the IBIS is fantastic in the GX80 - the main reason I want to upgrade my GX7 -

    • @yudisetiawan195

      john hallgrimsson I love IBIS on GX85, but in the other side, fully articulated lcd on GX8 very usefull for vloging, and also have an external Mic Jack.
      if the main consider is it, what should i take ?

Almost perfect condition...they are out there if you watch and are patient you can find a really nice example... And often at a pretty decent price....

    You make some good points, but I still grabbed a GX8. That's partly because I got a good deal second hand with the 2.8 12-35... But even so, the GX8 feels better, GX80 felt too small and flimsy... Also didn't like the feel of the G85 much.

  • @colinmcnab6145

    I have both and would still say the GX8 is the better camera. The image stablisation on the GX80 when shooting 4k video is not that good Sony a6300 is a lot better. Both the GX8 and GX80 still need a gimbal for stabilisation when hand held. The quality of video on the GX8 is noticeably better than the GX80 so are the photos.

    You bought the GX8 for the very features you're giving up. Ludicrous and ridiculous. GX8 replaced my high-end Canon and I haven't looked back. Plus I am thrilled to not use flash. True life doesn't have a flash.
