  • Hey Nerds!
    Here's my comparison video of the Panasonic G7 and the Panasonic GX80/GX85. They're both amazing cameras, both with pros and cons.
    Both are great budget/mid-range micro four thirds cameras.

      Maybe it would have been a better comparison when comparing the G80/85 with the GX80/85 in terms of the product series but I guess you took these two because of the similar pricepoint?

    Hi Emily, thanks so much for your videos and I really like that you share some workflow and many samples of lenses in action. I wanted to reach out because you've used both g7 and Gx85 extensively. I just picked up the g7 and am leaning towards it because of really the grip and flip screen that I think is easier for travel vlog and similar picture quality. Does the 5axis benefit mostly just video ? Or photo as well? I am coming from Fuji and want to make the switch to pany. Also for street and portrait what would be top 3 lenses you would recommend? My kit came with 14-42 and 45-150. Thank you! I love your Malta pictures.. would you consider doing post edit video? Your photos inspire me

    A small tip for using the GX80 without nose issues: use your right eye and keep you nose and cheek away from the camera (so unlike a DSLR). Then, keep your thumb on the touch screen at all times to select the focus point. This for me has practically eliminated any issues I had with continuous autofocus as well as nose bumps.
    Maybe I should make a video about this. Happy shooting!

    I bought the GX85 as a travel camera. Pair it with the Lumix 35-100 and you have everything you need. BTW if you look through the viewfinder with your right eye your nose won't touch the screen.

    The annoying thing with the nose moving the focus point can be stopped by disabling touch pad Af in the touch settings menu. I also wear glasses but I have no isseus with the EVF. BTW I had both the GX80 and the G7 but I recently sold the G7 and replaced it with the Olympus em5. I find this a better combination. Keep the videos going , love them

    The best comparison video. I had looked at 3 to 5 others before this one, and thought I had enough information to make my decision. Therefore, I almost closed this tab out before watching it, thinking I had enough information to make a decision . Thankfully, I went ahead and watched this video, and am so glad that I did, as Micro Four Nerds provided the best comparison. Before listening to this, I was content with going with the G7, and then realized that I could get the best of the the G7 and the G85X by going with the G85 with very little difference in price! Great job Micro Fourn Nerds!

    All your points are what made me want to love the gx80/85, but in the end the narrow hand grip and the location of the viewfinder had me go with the G7. I also felt the controls were too cramped. But it was a CLOSE thing!

    Always enjoy your videos. For me, although I have both of these, it is GX85 all the way, so much so I bought a used one that needed repairs, but now I have two. I still have the G7 but don't use it all that much since getting the GX85's and even upgraded from the G7 to a G95. Still have the G7 but may start using it for video only on a tripod, mainly because of the lack of IBIS. The G7 has tons of great qualities and I do break it out sometimes.

    Thanks for the video and commentary. I am looking at the GX80/GX85 as a travel camera. Can you tell me whether there is any freez-up of the EVF between shutter snaps? In other words, does the EVF freeze for a period of time while the image saves to disk?

    Dope comparison! I started my similar micro 4/3rds hoarding with the G7, then the I got the GX85, then I got the G85. The GX85’s IBIS was well worth the extra cost, but I did end up missing the mic input and flip out screen on the G7, thus the G85. The G85 has served me SO well, and I still use it regularly for my UA-cam videos. I sold the G7 and I don’t really use the GX85 as much as the G85, since the G85 has more features for video. But the GX85 plus a pancake lens are SO fun for taking around to street photo/random shoots where I don’t want to carry around a bunch of crap with me. I typically use the GX85 for stuff like that + b-roll. Btw love your videos and your sense of humor!

      I've been eyeing the G85 too. I have the GX85, and the G7 is super cheap atm, but if I'm getting a second camera, I'd prefer it to be more of an upgrade. Then the GX85 could be the second option.

      @@lessonsfromafather3465 I picked up the gx85 recently. I will primarily use it for b roll and photos. The stabilization is butter. I would recommend the g85. I personally cannot get over not having a flippy screen and the mic input... I have a g7 and gx85. What did you end up going with?

    • @lessonsfromafather3465
      @lessonsfromafather3465 5 років тому

      Luke Learns I did buy a gx8 and used it for a while but realized it’s just not fitting for my hand, or style! I sold it and bought a sweet GH4 in excellent condition with 4 very good lenses for $1200...so I couldn’t pass it up!
      I keep the G7 on my zhiyun crane and have built a rig around the GH4 for tripod work. I’m very happy with this decision though! Eventually when I can justify the purchase I’ll upgrade to a GH5!

    On my G81 you can toggle the behaviour of the touch pad between absolute and relative positioning. Set it to relative and a touch won't bother you as long as you don't swipe across the screen. That solved it for me. Don't know if there is a similar setting on the GX80 though but if then you should give it a try.

    • @MicroFourNerds

      Tomas Hernandez hi! For video the sensor size won't make much of a difference as 4k is only 8mp anyway. For stills it is handy to be able to crop more in post production with the 20mp, but you still have plenty of wiggle room with 16mp😊

    Very nice and humorous comparison :-)
    I own and use both, though I prefer the G7 in every situation where I don't need IBIS or smallest possible size (G80 + 20mm 1.7 pancake is a lovely combination).
    The G80's EVF is really poor - If i could put my old GH1's EVF into the G80 (or even G7), I would do it!
    It's so cool to film with my old adapted (Nikon) glass and have IBIS, but not really with a bad EVF.
    Emily, how would you compare the EVFs of G7 and GH5 (or, if you've ever tried, G85)?
    Thanks a lot!

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  6 років тому

      Josef Weisleitner the Gh5 evf really is in a league of its own. Its bright, sharp and some how bigger. And I hear the g9 is even better! I've only had a brief look at the g85 in a store, and took some quick test shots. It had the build quality of the Gh5 but to my eye the evf looked quite similar to the g7. I didn't play with it for long tho so I cant be sure. The gx80 is the worst evf of the bunch

    Hey, I'm unsure which camera I should buy.
    I want a camera for using for family- and vacation-photos. So normally, I would tend to the GX80, because of the more stabilizers. Would you agree?
    The only thing, that's holding me back from buying is, that I'd like to make some UA-cam videos (indoor, miniature painting) and so I'd miss the audio line-in, that comes with the G7(0). But, maybe the whole UA-cam idea is stupid and I cut it ... so: If I'm not making any videos: Would be the GX80 the better camera? You know, for making a fast shot (cause my one year old boy, doesn't wait very long for me to take a picture)

So in viewfinder mode my face won't change the position of the focus point and I can use my right thumb to position the focus without it jumping to my thumb position.

Touching the touch screen with the nose is not a problem as you can use the LVF switch to inactivate it. I guess the newer choice would be the GX9 but for the mild difference in line and accent, somehow the GX85 is still the better looking one.

    Let me tell you the Gx85 has my heart right away and my G9 may become a very lonely camera until I’m doing serious photo work and even then it’s a awesome street photography camera.
    I forgot how much I love flip up screen versus a flippy screen for me.
    I can shoot ambidextrous with my eyes so do love the placement of the viewfinder on the Gx85.
    The compact size is a pleasure when it’s just casual or street photography.
    And that built in flash is handy.
    And dammit why doesn’t the G9 have a powered hot shoe so you can install the mini flashes powered from the camera battery like the Gx85.
    Never used the G9 video so don’t care about that.
    Would love to see a firmware update for the Gx85 on auto focus but it’s pretty good.
    I personally can’t tell the difference between the quality of photos when I printed a 8x10. Maybe with a 16x20 print?
    It’s unbelievable I’m finding myself loving this camera more than the G9 in many ways.

  • @keithspillett5298
    @keithspillett5298 5 років тому

    In answer to your question about wearing glasses and using the GX80 viewfinder, I find my glasses move my nose sufficiently away from the touchscreen so as not to cause 'nose auto focus'. Another way around the problem is to use the right eye, so the nose is nowhere near the screen. I suppose another alternative would be to decrease the sensitivity of touch on the screen, but that would affect everything else too, probably not a good idea. Incidentally, having jumped the MFT ship for a while last year, in favour of canon's dual pixel af, I'm now back in the fold. I missed the convenience of MFT, and now own a G6, that I picked up for under £130, a G80, and a GX80. The last two obviously have ibis, which I missed too much for video, so the writing was on the wall for the Canons. ......🤗

    I'm a novice looking for a camera. I saw one model that has a feature that shows you if you are over, under, or correctly exposed before you take the photo.From there you can figure out on your own if you need to adjust F stop or ISO. Pretty nifty. Do either of these have a feature like that?

    As several have noted, you can absolutely disable the touch AF. I have trouble with SLR-styled cameras with my nose on the screen, but I've never had an issue with rangefinder-styled cameras with my nose on the screen because my nose is off to the left side of the camera when using the AVF.
    That said, I really haven't used the EVF much on the GX85. The rear screen is really good, especially for discreet street photography. A fully articulating screen is not quite as discreet as the GX85 tilt screen. I was also used to a Nikon DSLR, which was so heavy that I HAD to use the OVF just to stabilize the thing (three point stabilization), but the GX85 is so small and light, I find that I just don't need it at my eye to stabilize the shot.

    • @WesAllen
      @WesAllen 6 років тому +1

      Yah, if I wasn’t left-eye dominant the position of the eye piece wouldn’t be an issue at all. But as I am, my tests with the gx85 showed the same issue, the focus point jumped all over the place. It was a bummer.

    • @nathandavis5099
      @nathandavis5099 6 років тому

      Wes Allen Huh. I never thought about dominant eye. I guess I'm right eye dominant. My first camera was a Canonette rangefinder, so I got used to sliding my nose along the left side of the camera. SLRs felt bizarre because my nose always smashed against the back of the camera.

    Again, great video. I also had the same two cameras myself. I say "had" since I sold G7. And that's only because I have em1ii(similar look, size as G7). One thing I couldn't see until I had both in hands was the weight. Boy, that gx80 is noticeably heavier. At least to my impression.
    One comment. You can turn off the touch focus on gx80. I don't have the camera with me right now so I can't point out how, but I know because I turn it off all the time.

    Speaking of features, have you ever tried the "Snap Movie" feature? Essentially, it lets you perform a precise and smooth focus pull with all those focus-by-wire lenses. Turn off all the fade-ins and fade-outs and all the other nonsense, just select 8 sec and the focus points. Works great and is a serious feature imho.
    It's like a heavily stripped down version of the GH5's focus pull feature (where you can select multiple focus points, adjust speed etc., all without a record limit), but it is still very useful!

I dont like how it lays in your hands, i dont like how you access the menu ( i think there were less control buttons), the viewfinder is not very nice to use... but the IBIS just is such a big deal for videos, so if i had the choice again, i dont know if i would go for the G70, although with stabilization, it would be one of the best beginner cameras.

    I only have the GX80, so can't compare, but the biggest downside i have with it is the flat interface. I'm constantly changing the focus point on the touch screen by accident and I also find it hard to find back button focus button just by touch alone, I always have to take the camera away from my face to put my thumb over it again. If there was a lip around the screen like other cameras, i think it would be a lot better. This is just a minor issue though really as I really do enjoy using it.

    Just saw this video today, 4 yrs later, and just wondering what are you up to now, are you still heavily into photography, cameras and lens collection? Seems like I just arrived at the G/GX rave a bit late, I just got all 3 models with me to help me decide and I can’t really pick one. I do find myself using the GX85 more maybe because of its size, looks and feel, so that is the winner. The G95 wins in terms of features overload, but I don’t use many of those features often so that doesn’t matter. The whole 20 mega pixel is no advantage, images from the G95 look soft, dull, and not as sharp or crisp. I think the G85 is the happy medium between the two, a bit bigger than the GX but not as robust as the G95, better image quality than the G95 in my opinion. So, it is hard to choose one. The G95 is huge in size, but feels light and comfortable to hold. The G85 feels tiny and heavy, it hurts after a while. The G95 has a more mature interface, easier and more pleasant to use, but it doesn’t output pleasing image quality, lackluster results. The G95 is hard to hold and use, but produces very pleasing images. The GX85 lacks in every area, limited functionality, hard to use and hold, but it looks good, it feels good, you are more tempted to grab it, you use it more, and the final image results are excellent, although the 12-32 kit lens is not good at all. The 12-60 and the 45-150 are both excellent kit lens. So, there you have it. Six of one and half dozen of the others. For studio work the G85, for out and about the GX85, I would skip the G95. So, true that today 4yrs later, the GX85/G85 are both holding their resale price and value, but today the G95 sells new for the same price as the G85. That tells you it is not a good performer.

      paul not a dummy at all! It means, in theory, you could get a steady shot 5 stops darker than an unstabilised camera. Except the shot won't be darker. Meaning you can use a longer shutterspeed and the image will come out stable. For instance on the gx80 you can shoot at 1/10th of a second quite easily, but on the g7 that would come out blurred

    Hey Emily, I am thinking strongly about upgrading my G7 to a G85 or a much pricier GH5. I also have a GX8, but I strongly prefer the dslr body over the rangefinder. I shoot mainly product and run and gun style DIY videos for my company, for example:
    ua-cam.com/video/K80DBMOCONc/v-deo.html
    If you wouldn’t mind watching the video, I would love to hear if you think I would benefit from upgrading to the GH5 over the cheaper G85. I do use a zhiyun Crane V2, but after years of construction and tree work I have very shaky hands I think I would really benefit from the stabilization upgrade alone of the G85. What do you think?

I'd only go for the gh5 if you feel like you'd benefit from 4k at 60 frames a second. 4k in slow motion is very handy because you can crop into it 4x so I love it. Witb out that both cameras are quite similar especially for Stabilisation

    As someone who wears glasses, I can't even begin to tell you how much of a pain in the butt it is. I tried it out before buying it and I could see RGB dots all over the panel. I almost bought it online without testing the EVF first, so I'm glad I did get to test it first.
    Thankfully the GX8 has a better viewfinder, so the RGB dots issue is non-existent. Although it was twice the price of the GX80/85, I went with the GX8 and I don't regret it one bit.
    Side note, I also owned the G7 for a short period of time and it didn't have that RGB dots issue either, so it must be a GX80/85 issue.

    I started to watch this but soon switched it off, comparison tests are meaningless, each of us purchase the camera that suits our requirements. Making a video regarding which camera is better than the other is totally pointless, there is no such thing as the perfect camera and if someone buys a camera that is missing something that the person really needed than that proves that he or she didn't research the camera.
