I hope we get an analysis of Wolverine from this show soon, it's so good to see him in a healthy dynamic with the rest of the X Men as well as actually acting his age and providing mentorship for the team.
@@mandalorianhunter1This suit is a solid second favorite, the first of course goes to the brown and yellow suit. Kinda bummed out that he stopped wearing the cowl and fit later in the series, but it did show how more accepting he was of working as a team and how well he fit in with the X-Men.
He was my first black teen x man because they whitewashed sunspot slowly and bishop was both far too old and not my style all I really had to relate to was nightcrawler because people judged how he looked differently
I honestly thought he was cool and nice concept of actually being related to a senior X-Men. He had to live up to his aunt while also making sure he was good enough to stay so his parents wouldn't take him away. Him going with the you know who was like a call back to Storm joining them as their leader.
He was created because there were a lot of young African-American boys who were fans of the X-Men but very few characters that reflected that background in the X-Men. And he was always going to be an original character, because apparently they didn’t know there was a Marvel villain named Armadillo at first or that Marrow even existed. The thing about Spyke is that he’s the only member of the Evo X-Men who just gets to be “a kid” and go through the standard “kid” character arc of learning to accept responsibility. Every other character’s got angst about their powers or their appearance or their family situation. And, as cliche as it was, it was kind of refreshing to have a character whose main thing was “Ugh! I just want to goof off and go skateboarding, but unfortunately I’ve got these stupid bone spike powers”.
Every Xmen team should have a young teen that represents the time live and learn what it means to be an xmen. The 90s had Jubilee and the 00s had Spyke. And I loved Spyke as a kid, he was so cool. I would’ve loved to see more of him.
X-Men Evolution was my favourite X-Men show growing up and honestly I enjoyed Spike as a character in the show, granted his inclusion was as a result of the lack of diversity in the team which I can understand. I liked that they made Spike Storms nephew and his rivalry with Quicksilver. Though I do think his character was good in the first couple seasons but I do kinda prefer when they had Spike join the Morlocks in Season 3 after his mutation gets worse as I feel like that dynamic of him feeling like a monster among fellow mutants who can't change what they like look like made more sense for a character like Spike after we see his powers permanently cover his body
Looking back I always thought there was something special about Evan that I couldn't really put my finger on. Watching this video I realised something- Evan is one of the only characters to know what a mutant is before he got his powers. He possibly knew about mutants his entire life since his parents know Ororo is one. It feels like he views his mutation and the institute in a more mundane way than the rest of the cast. If this was explored I think it could've made his character a lot more interesting. Focusing on Evan's opinion on what being a mutant is and what that means for his life, and how that grows and changes. Also the other week I realised that he's basically the love child of Storm and Wolverine and now I can't unsee it.
There was an Episode about an African Witch Doctor who Hypnotizes Storm and Spyke is the one who notices and has ALOT of Concern over his Aunt! And by the end, he’s the one who Saves her after spending so much time training with Wolverine!
Tbh I enjoyed Spike the most out of the "Black Teen Superhero" archetypes. Spike was pretty chill, had a dope personality and where they took the character was really interesting. You don't usually see philosophical teen superheroes often or at all. The fact Spike saw reason enough for him to stay with the undergeound mutants when he mutates further is dope. I'd love to see him brought into PROPER comic canon, maybe as a Xmen faction in Africa or leading the underground mutants. They tried once but the character was never really him💀 Also you should probably at Season 1 to the title so people don't assume its his entire character. He's an original character in a VERY old IP, so its gonna take time to become comfortable with him to understand how he fit in
There was no mention of when he mutated so much that he could to suppress his spikes and wore a hard spiked shell. And because of said mutation, left the Xmen to join a band of underground mutants living in the sewers.
This show is how I found out about him and I always wanted more of this version,he had some depth to his character in This show. Being black we didn’t have many representation back then vs how we do now I always liked spike was thankful they gave us spike.
I remember the episode were spike was failing in school and losing control of his powers and decided to join/found a seperate group of misfit x-men. It’s one of the few episodes that I remember as a kid.
Cool concept but he really was a missed opportunity. He didn’t have much interpersonal connection with characters, or many episodes about him that flesh him out until the end. Even his rivalry with Pietro was sort of dropped. Their goal for representation worked; as a black kid it was nice to see a black male on the X-Men. Aside from seeing Bishop in the 90’s show, I didn’t think there even was a black guy X-Men. I just wish they cooked with him more. As you said, he could often be forgotten. His last season arc was interesting but depressing considering how under utilized he was prior, it felt like an extra punishment. He could’ve used that Kaldur’ahm treatment (and even that felt like he was missing some sauce in favor of his white teammates).
Don't disrespect my energetic porcupine boi like that. He is not Kamala Khan, Riri Williams, Comic Miles Morales(Existing just to be a shadow of Ultimate Peter Parker).
I am talking about him always feeling instead of acting (before the mutants were revealed to the human race.) For example, when I was rewatching this show again at 16, the episode he first appeared it, when he was fighting Quicksilver. In the episode he says “That’s is Peatro. You’re going down this time.” And “Not this time Peatro. It time I win one!” Both those times he shouted out to Peatro and rushed towards him to tackle him. 1. Shouting at him in anger only makes Quicksilver aware that he is going to try to attack; which gives Quicksilver time to dodge. 2. The guy seriously tackles at Peatro when he is fully aware the guy has super speed. After those 2 acts of stupidity, I said back when I was 16 and I will say it again: He shouts giving warning of his attacking intentions and rushes towards him and yet he has the gall, the nerve, the audacity to whine and shout: “I’ve tried; he just too fast! I thought you said all that training stuff would help!” Another thing I said at 16, is that instead of rushing towards Peatro, you must think fast in order to beat fast. For example, since Peatro relies on running at high speeds, I would have Evan shout small spikes on the ground the size of thumbtacks that would hurt Peatro and throw him off balance. When facing off someone stronger, you just need to fight smarter. He is the reason he is losing and complains. Back in 2000 I liked him and he had cool powers but as a teenager, I dislike because he whines, doesn’t think, doesn’t take things seriously ; don’t get me started when he upright disrespected his teacher by ditching class like that. I started to like him when I watched a season of the show I have never watched back in 2000, season 3 and 4.
I always felt like he had another lvl after the full mutation.Especially since they never really explain if he had a healing factor that was really fast.He could be an ultimate tank .
He was my favorite character as a kid just because of his cool powers, but when I re-watched the show as an adult I realized that - not only he had less lines and screen time than everyone else (specially Kitty, that girl was spoiled) - the writers really had no idea what to do with him and literally had him quit the X-Men mid-series - in a very out of character way - to join the Morlocks and do F all for the rest of the show. Wasted potential if I've ever seen one.
i always interpreted spyke cam's ending to basically be that evan was placing himself [the only required person to make it make sense], kitty [the ultimate escape artist], and rogue [the only true all-counter] as bait to lure out and then neutralize sabertooth. helping the two get along and work towards their goal was a happy side-effect that he likely took into account but was nowhere near as important as "make sure who ever helps me with this doesn't get hurt in the attempt"
Huh, I just noticed that if it had been me, Sabretooth couldn't have surprised me with that message the same way. I always check what the last picture or video is when l turn my camera on.
I thought spyke was ok, but he was easily the weakest of the main cast Honestly the only point he got interesting was when he became a morlock, but that was so incredibly underused Also yes, his watching jean in the shower bit was creepy
I didn't like the show adding a random non-mutant sister to Storm tbh. Was just kinda random and makes Storm's backstory...weird? That was my only gripe with the character.
I was upset that this version didn't make it to the comics because I was really in his power progression but unfortunately the show didn't really care for him😮💨. I didn't really find out about Marrow until I watched Wolverine and the xmen, it isn't hard to argue that their really similar especially with involvement of the morlocks then spyke's morlock mutation as well but from what I heard they didn't know Marrow when they made him but giving that they didn't know what to do with him, I see why they give him the morlock storyline. I still like him nonetheless. It's not like there aren't a lot of people with similar abilities to one another in comics, especially with all mutant telepathys. I consider Marrow and Spyke like the opposite of Wolverine with more focus on the bone ability and lesser healing.
Was Spike an entirely new character? I watched the 90s animated series last year and could have sworn Storm had a nephew in that version too. That nephew had speed powers though, and he wasn’t called Spike. I just assumed that they changed up the character’s powers for the later series because they already had plans to include Pietro, and then added the nickname to make the character "cooler."
There was an episode in the 1st season about her past in Africa. Apparently she once helped woman in her village give birth and the boy was born dead so she used her powers to help him breath and later she helped to raise him so they thought about each other as of a family but they weren't blood related. His name was Mj'Nari or something like that and yes - he was a speedster.
Im a 90s kid so i watched this when it aired and i can say much like xmen ..at that time i had NO IDEA what the storylime was 😂 but boy did i watch every episode. . Gonna have to revisit this one
When was that ever a trope?💀 Spike is the ONLY character I know that did that I guess you can argue Static was too but he never raod a skateboard, he only used a disk when it was hero time
I would argue Spike deserved better writing. I think he was a great representation of Young Black Males who struggle with trust and finding their own identity. I wish they would put him in the comics at least, he would be great for a wakanda x men storyline
Not disappointed at all, keep those studies a priority. Nice video, I liked Spike (but only bc he was black rlly). I’m not certain how I felt about his “progression” later down the line.
Not gonna lie, I barely remember X-Men Evolution. It is only in retrospective that I recall the powers of the tertiary characters. But of those that were more interesting was Sypke and Quicksilver. Not for either's previous iterations but because of the storyline as rivals. Pietro is a narcist and Spyke was an average teenager. However, as this video showed, Evan should be reliant on a social group. His angst was so natural I did not recognize it til now. Neither did I not saw the second episode but nice recap. I do understand frustration over this rough cutoff. I hope atleast the writers of those episodes did go to do great projects!
He was a black skateboarder that helped a lot of misunderstood African Americans feel comfortable in their own skin growing up privileged folk could never understand lol
First off lets be clear just because marrow was created first doesn't mean she was better ....spike was waaay more cooler and popular....marrow was never mentioned for anything until spike came along and all the comparison started ....spike was in X men 3 movie against wolverine
Dude I love spyke to death, but this first season didn’t do him justice like the rest. So for the first season yeah he sucked, but there’s a reason he’s my one of my favorites in this show
Yknow I think it's time for the X-men start featuring the Academy X generation of mutants it's perfect for this generation, Rich jock guy, Hellion! an Anarchist Kid Omega! Blonde steoreotype Steford Cuckoos! Gay kids Anole, Mercury and Bling!
I was absolutely PISSED when he left in S3E6 1st of all:why did they still have him in the new intro after he left? 2nd:I hate that (even though it’s implied) he does eventually rejoin the team but it doesn’t happen until the final episode also while his mutation in Season 4 is cool I’m not the biggest fan solely because of the design everything else is awesome also I never realized this until recently he doesn’t use his skateboard anymore after S3 I understand why but still (also also side note:Spykecam is one of the few episodes that I rewatched all the time after I finished the show for the first time which was a little over a decade ago I recently rewatched it and finished it 3-4 months ago)
THANK YOU. I was never a fan of Spyke, and since Iceman is one of my favorite X-Men, I was even more salty that Spyke was his replacement (and later on that switched, but still). They also had other black mutants they could've used, and I never understood if he and Storm were biologically related
We’re you only analysing season 1 of spyke or is this the fully analysed of this character?I kind of thought your were going full on his character arch ?
You completely left out the character progression he went through after his 2nd evolution with the bigger physique and fire spikes and joins the morlocks. That was a pivotal part of his story that showed him in a place of acceptance and pride in being a mutant since he couldn't conceal his spikes anymore. He was also shown to come into his own as a mature leader with combat proficiency.
I think sucked is a bit harsh but definitely not memorable especially since he got written down to recurring character. Nothing wrong with trying new characters, its a hit and miss system and hey without it we never would have gotten Laura.
I understand showing restraint in not doing Teen Bishop, but in retrospect of Spyke being underwhelming and Marvel eventually doing a teenage version of their other time traveling mutant Cable in the actual mainline comics, maybe they should've just did Teen Bishop.
I genuinely hate how Storm was made an adult just so he could exist when they both could’ve been teens and they could’ve been cousins. Her character focused around him a lot just for him to be turned into a morlock and leave so now we have a waterdown Storm and Spyke left so we had no main black mutant on the main team…
I thought he was pretty great. His character shift from this immature spoiled city kid, to a vigilante and civil rights leader was great character development to me. Power set was meh until he got that upgrade/armor. But yeah I’ll give him a B- for the series.
Marrow he is a rip off power wise of marrow don’t know why I said he’s a rip off of himself my bad
I was like, “is there a spike in the 616 X-Universe that I didn’t know about?”
They really should've used Marrow instead.
I heard that the original plan was just to make Iceman black instead of making a new character
They did not even know about Marrow when they stared but the also made a Wolverine clone, they just didn't use him properly
no hes not, its common to have the same powers there are dozens of telepaths
I hope we get an analysis of Wolverine from this show soon, it's so good to see him in a healthy dynamic with the rest of the X Men as well as actually acting his age and providing mentorship for the team.

He was just a black male version of Marrow
I loveddd spyke
He was a black skateboarder that helped a lot of misunderstood African Americans feel comfortable in their own skin growing up privileged folk could never understand lol
Love your X Men Evolution vids I'd wanna see u do a character study on Wolverine in this series
Please do an avalanche video next please.
Crazy how you didn’t mention bro had his shirt tucked into his boxers..😂
Style was just different back then ig
This kid is a menace
For the largest demo watching the channel (i had no clue, that explains static) we got done dirty & with Storm also.
I have been considering watching x-men evolution.
Spyke sounds like a decent character, for the most part anyway.
Aye bro as a fellow college student I get it that first week is tough
THANK YOU. I was never a fan of Spyke, and since Iceman is one of my favorite X-Men, I was even more salty that Spyke was his replacement (and later on that switched, but still). They also had other black mutants they could've used, and I never understood if he and Storm were biologically related
This hilarious all the niccas was watching wb kids😭 free tv baby x men used to go crazy
Spyke did get better when his powers upgraded.
I need him in live action X men
One of the weakest characters but had great moments. But the two characters they added in the Xmen Legends games were worse, by far.
“Auntie O’” 😂
Spyke Lee
Blasphemy my man Spike was one of the greatest
I literally forgot about him.
May your semester go the best it can (^_^)
@Venxous When will you do one for Toad
We’re you only analysing season 1 of spyke or is this the fully analysed of this character?I kind of thought your were going full on his character arch ?
I like spike lol great character.he shouldn’t of been in the morlocks
They wasted his potential ong imagine if he got a panther suit or the panther serum while being a mutant they had his bloodline going to storm
I wonder what a teenage bishop would look like in the show if he would’ve been better than Spike
Why his shirt tucked into his drawls
i mean yeah, they only made him because they couldn't make bishop a teenager for whatever reason and he's kind of a cut and paste of marrow power wise
You should talk about Young Justice!
Don’t suppose I could request for Kitty Pryde next?
Gender Bent Marrow....not often the door swings in that direction.
Yeah that’s for a future video….its he later season iteration that made me love dude so much.
But yeah I’ll give him a B- for the series.
you never went over his morloc arc
