  • How can thermal lancing on haul trucks be eliminated by a component change?
Jerrod Downey from Mining Now interviews Sam Hyder, CEO of Geographe, and discusses how can a pin to suit a Caterpillar or Komatsu haul trucks be re-designed to be safer and easier to remove, eliminating thermal lancing and its dangers in the process.

Thank you! A full animation can be seen here: ua-cam.com/video/OawPxclUrcg/v-deo.html We've recently created specific tooling to aid in the removal process on Komatsu 830E trucks. You can see this idea here: ua-cam.com/video/fC5H6xukUnk/v-deo.html

I work at a mine that had exceptional maintenance on their equipment, so far as with perhaps 80 trucks, 14 diggers running 24/7 lancing is only ever done on hard to inspect areas Usually a travelling sheave or on a dozer equaliser.

Our customers have issues with the varying conditions from site to site, which can increase or decrease the extent that lancing is required. It's the unpredictability of when it's required that is one of the key challenges. The designs for colleted pins also extend to CAT dozers too.

Pretty sure caterpillar used something really similar to this on 988B and F model wheel loaders.

Colleted pin applications are used in mining, aviation and a variety of other industries to great effect. Our first recollection of the concept was with Elphinstone machinery and the idea has now been re-engineered and enhanced to suit mining haul trucks to help eliminate the need for hot works permits. The 988 loader collets and pins are still around, an example can be found here: store.geographe.com.au/pin-collet-8r3938 Its listed for R Series underground loaders, but like many items to suit CAT machines, it also suits others including the 988B.
