Because I'm Young (Demo of Because you're young) - David Bowie Look in my eyes, nobody ho-o-ome. / I can be happy, dead or alive. / People I know, people I love. / They could be happy if I were dead or alive. / nana nana nana na ah ah / I should be older ohh ohh / I should be older / Because I'm young don't mean it's alright. / Because I'm young don't mean it's over. / 'cause it makes me laugh / 'cause it takes a million years / a million dreams / a million sta-a-a-a-ars Look in my eyes, nobody ho-o-ome. / I could be happy, dead or alive / People I know, people I love. / They would be happy if I were dead or alive / nana nana nana na ha ah / I should be older ahh ha / I should be older / Because I'm young don't mean it's alright. / Because I'm young don't mean it's over. / 'cause it makes me laugh / 'cause it takes a million years / a million dreams/ a million/ a million / a million / a million sta-a-a-a-ars / a million / a million / a million / a million sta-a-a-a-ars / a million / a million / ahh million
I was a street child from 1978 to 1982, and was a Bowie Fan. I know this demo song very much. It was just like I freaked out with Bowie at this wonderful time. It was wonderful to be a street child at this time, because the hippie people and freakers took good care of you. Bowie has always been like my young father
If Bowie has more such revolutionary "demos" up in his vaults, then we're in for a thrilling ride through his genius musical mind again someday ! Because I was young, I have never seen him live ! Now I can only dream about it... Best for Mr. Jones ! :)
I was lucky to see him live on the Stage tour back in 1978. I was 17 at the time It was a terrific show with a great band, and Mr Bowie looked so much healthier and had put on some weight since the Diamond Dogs tour of 1974. The band was great too. sttgaegoaktd 😛😛😛😛😛😛😛
I know what you mean. Im 25 and haven't seen him. The tickets ran out when I tried to see him at the SECC Glasgow when I was 16 then when I was 19 he had to pull out of T in the Park because of his heart. Im gutted. But I'd rather the old boy have a happy life than rush about doing world tours.
It's so interesting to hear his scratch vocals. I get some Lennon vibes sometimes now and then on this, the way he sings it ("na na na na na na na na, I said be older, I should be older"). I also love how he inverted some of his original ideas in transitioning to the final songs ("And it makes me laugh" becomes "and it makes me sad").
It hurts to hear the pain he felt. He cleaned up the songs on the album to make them seem more about fascism and such, but looking back on the demos they were all about him... I hate to see/hear him in pain.
Parts of the bassline by George Murray are just the same as what he played on 'Secret Life of Arabia' (for what it's worth mentioning). I've changed my mind about this now. I do think it's a demo but for backing vocals. He must have made plenty of them until he was happy with the end result Fascinating stuff to an old Space Cadet like me!.
Good lord, this is the rarest bowie of the rare! I love hearing this mix, which is nice and clear without all the reverb extras... Gonna go listen to, ahem, Teenage Wildlife demo...
I find this lyrically so much more immediate and interesting than the album track. "psycho-delicate girl..." puh_lease. The album lyric casts rueful middle age looking at the tragedies of youth and young love--this is more about nihilism--imo. I never liked the guitar so far back in either mix--its a great riff
@SamazRalan I think you are right but I would like to say that I think that it's because the demo was not 'mastered' as tracks are for general release. I can read between the lines on that demo and tell you (that from my point of view) that the guitar is heavier and the vocal is a pure live take which, as usual for Bowie, is faultless. If he played that live in your living room with his band you'd love it Mate. Cheers.
This sounds like Bowie's backing vocal to the track (unmixed) on a raw backing track. Great to hear it isolated like that. I'm not so sure that it is strictly a demo though. The musical arrangement is finished as it is on the album. I am only guessing here and could be wrong.
This really is better than final version. Every now and then, even Bowie got it wrong. He was, at times, prone to over production. This one could have been a real hit with some tweeking. He almost ruined Heroes with overproduction.
It's funny you should say this as I always thought 'Because you're young' should have been a single.....the first one off Scary Monsters, with Ashes to Ashes as the second single rather than lead single which it was. Although this demo version bus great, I still prefer the finished version as on the album. Why it wasn't a single is baffling - perhaps Bowie thought it would flop do didn't release it as one. But then again 'Up the hill backwards' flopped and I really like that track aswell. I like all of Scary Monsters and it's my third favourite Bowie album (behind Station to Station, and Low). All three are fantastic amazing albums which have more than stood the test of time. Which is more than can be said for most of his 80's music.

Yes, Scary Monsters was David's 70s compilation album. He used ever style he had mastered. A great Album!
- and reworked some old songs to boot: Tired of my life became It's no game, and I am a laser became Scream like a baby - pretty good remakes!!
If Bowie has more such revolutionary "demos" up in his vaults, then we're in for a thrilling ride through his genius musical mind again someday ! Because I was young, I have never seen him live ! Now I can only dream about it... Best for Mr. Jones ! :)
I read shortly after he passed that their is so much material in the vaults that we can experience him for many many more years

The original lyrics are so different from the final mix. Excellent!

Very Lennie
Look in my eyes, no body home..catchy lyrics..great melody, sounds very Bowie.
It hurts to hear the pain he felt. He cleaned up the songs on the album to make them seem more about fascism and such, but looking back on the demos they were all about him... I hate to see/hear him in pain.
Dann sind wir Helden Oh brother!
David can sing an advert from a newspaper and make it sound good..
Or the yellow pages, haha.
the world is better because of you tube. this is proof

Fascinating stuff to an old Space Cadet like me!.
I used to be able to bass secret life of Arabia but I don't hear much similarities though
Good lord, this is the rarest bowie of the rare! I love hearing this mix, which is nice and clear without all the reverb extras...
Gonna go listen to, ahem, Teenage Wildlife demo...
No auto tune :)
"Because You're..."
me encantoo,fascinante ,grande bowie
scary monsters one of the very best albums , ranking high up there with lodger!!!
One of my favorite Bowie songs. If this is a demo, it's a pretty damn good demo. His vocals are way up front, which is interesting.
A great snapshot of a work in progress! I'm happy to hear that the funky bass, and that guitar hook were already there. It put a smile on my face:)
Oh, sweet Jesus....thank you for posting this.... I thought I had lost it forever ..... xoxoxo

Does anybody know where I can find the lyrics of this version?
Written by David Bowie but it could have been a song from Bryan Ferry. Sounds very much like this
I love Bryan ferry but no this was all David
Phenomenal talent in any form: either raw or high production.
really nice version, thank you so much!!!
This is so good as usual
Wowwww..!!!! Phee-nominal! Great upload; thanks very much!
Lennon " starting over" period influence on " nanananananana" vocal.

I prefer lyrics from "Scary Monsters". It reminds me of myself when I was young.
so so so much better than the version he put on Scary Monsters. really great! Thank you for sharing this gem!!
magnifique il nous manque
brutal.
Thanks for uploading ... seems I go back to Berlin... Time of my life
Great demo but the Scary Monsters version is certainly better IMO
was this a Tom Verlaine song?... i prefer this demo to the lp version... wow
Actually Pete sounds mixed somewhat down here.....

C’est ainsi qu’on détruit petit à petit un mythe
I love this,
scary was orginally going to be an instrumental album, he added the vocals and synth parts much later
Mark Ryan source please?
So wrong
Cor! This is a nice treat :) Thank you!!
@alexandermorison then agian scream like a baby was not good on the rare demo it lacked that deep sound to it. (all my opinion of course)
very interesting,good to hear.
I love this version.😍🎶❤🎶Thanks🙂
Good to hear this demo. 'Because Your Young ' is one my favourite 'Monsters' tracks , well they all are really ! Great album .
sounds a bit like Lennon, some parts of the song
I was hearing the Lennon influence on the vocals a lot here too.
@@MichelleCFunk Me three!
@abimnazar I subscribe, fabulous! Thank you strobesignal.
Oh my god....it's FANTASTIC!!!!!!THANKS...much more rare DEMO PLEASEEEEE.....thanks thanks
Just in love with this Awsome Album Whis he was still active now!!!!!!
Great version, I like to play it on my guitar always...its not so simple.
fantastic
meraviglia....
Nice, love the bass. Where did you get this?
Great Uploads! Thanks a lot! :D
Fascinating !
Probably not a "demo" but a working rough mix. Guitars and drums sound like the final release.
*you're
Yeah, that's a misused homophone
What a fine stomp to the bass. Great bass line
be young you are cause
Here again
yep
They captured what he was going for here 😎 haha its almost exact
meraviglia
@alexandermorison it is still good tho
you're young et pas your young :D
Wow, such a great DEMO.
This really is better than final version. Every now and then, even Bowie got it wrong. He was, at times, prone to over production. This one could have been a real hit with some tweeking. He almost ruined Heroes with overproduction.
Completely agree that this song is better in demo than on album. The over-prod kills it and forebears what is to come in the mid-to-late 80s...
Blah blah blah 🤣.
It's funny you should say this as I always thought 'Because you're young' should have been a single.....the first one off Scary Monsters, with Ashes to Ashes as the second single rather than lead single which it was.

Bowie with good ol' Townsend.

Geniud
this is way better than the scary monsters version!
