This was Bowie at the height of his powers, and it's nice to hear Lulu, another great 60's icon, sharing the spotlight. I wish they would have finished this up, it's classic stuff!
Hi, nearly 9 years later, I put this on from an old CD I had from an ex that I lived with for 30 years. He had a bunch of old Bowie tracks etc. 8 years on, we are back together and now we are about Bowie's age! RIP David. Reading some messages - sorry when I inherited these CDs, it said it was a Bowie/Lulu session. Apologies for any incorrect info here. This is still Bowie and Lulu's voices but maybe its a lead track for Lulu to sing along to? . Either way, Its not great, I admit. Might be a demo, but 100% Bowie and Lulu. Love to all Bowie fans! Did not want to misrepresent anything. However, whatever this is, enjoy
I wish they had kept Bowie's (?) guitar vamp at the outro in the released version - love the juxtaposition of that gnarly diamond dogs guitar with the swingin' arrangement.
The star that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you, Starman, have burned so very, very brightly. You were the soundtrack to my life, my inspiration, and you gave me the confidence to wholly and unashamedly be myself. Thank you. For everything. I miss you more than I know how to say. Rest in Peace. Rest in Power.
I can assure you it's not me singing on this (!) I got it from the Absolutely Rare album, and apparently was recorded with Lulu in late 1973. Several websites talking about Absolutely Rare also say this. Type "Absolutely Rare Helden Lulu" into Google and the first result with be Helden and will take you to the page saying it was a 1973 recording? There's several other results saying 1973? Either way I didn't mean to mislead anyone
I love this - I have a poster of Lulu and Bowie on mt wall from that period. It's from, the now defunct, Disc music paper, and is 35 years old - I live in China now - and somehow it suits China, I don't know why.
Bowie's vocals are polished, and the backing track sounds the same as in the finished version with just him, the one that wasn't released until the Ryko discs in 1991. I think Lulu didn't really know the song, and was singing over the original. I wonder if this wasn't recorded by Bowie to see if her voice suited the material.
It does sound like you could be right. It would have been great if they had recorded a finished version of this, with the vocals more in synchronicity perhaps? cttcaegoaktd 😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛
Not very powerful. Just sounds like someone singing along to Bowie, not really WITH in the sense of actually improving or adding a little something-something. I don't like it.
happy birthday david. i miss you terribly.thank you for showing me that in art you can do everything you can´t in real life.and specially that i dont have to impress anyone to do what i feel.
This isn't even a demo. It's a recording of Lulu in the middle of learning the song from Bowie's guide vocal. But the poster of this vid doesn't seem to want to acknowledge the fact.
Indeed, as jemb2000 says this is simply the music with a guide vocal from David (as released in shortened form on various recent Diamond Dogs reissues) with Lulu singing over the top.
Yeah, this is legit> It's been around for much longer than the video and Lulu was at the session, this version was just never released because of licensing issues.
Ronson played guitar on Rebel but bowie rerecorded it for DD album. Ronson also produced the 'Queen Aged Baby " demo by Wayne County . Queen Age is the song Bowie copied for Rebel Rebel !
Doesn't sound much like Lulu and the music (along with Bowie's vocals) are the final version of the song. In other words, what ever female is singing, she is singing along with the pre-recorded track. I know of no producers that would do this unless it was a test track just to get the singer warmed up or perhaps tape was just rolling during rehearsals. It shouldn't have been released, ever, either way.
This was recorded at Chataeu D'Herouville in August/1973 prior to the 1980 Floor Show....David never did understand why she showed up there for 3-4 days for this crap rendition.
Well sure he played guitar live on Rebel Rebel and 1984/Dodo (including the studio version which was the last recording with him and Trevor Bolder). Wasn't clear from what you said though. Sorry.
I've only just heard this little gem. It does have potential. I know it's a bit random but take a listen to the '76 very raunchy disco hit by Germany's Silver Convention called 'No No Joe' & there is a bit of a resemblance going on if you catch it. Could be pure coincidence or he could have been shagging all 3 of them after Lulu cos that was his Berlin period so he was in the area & both acts were having huge hits all over Europe at the time. ua-cam.com/video/NhTdWywv2rQ/v-deo.html
God, no wonder it was UNreleased... HA! Bowie sounds fine as usual, but her timing is stiff, and voice somehow just doesn't mesh well with Bowie's. And regardless... the song sucks! lol
A bit, but similarly Bowie singing the segment of Rebel Rebel on VH1 recreates the original really well, and there's about twenty odd years between the two.
David starts off louder, and then Lulu steps up the vocals towards the end. Common technique in many duets. They were lovers if you didn't know, so I bet this if mostly for fun.
Cozmo she is f---ing joke, Bowie is the quintessential professional, he must had needed her money, she can't sing, sounds like an annoying mother, how did she surface after all this time?
To @SIR46661 below, I've heard that shite before (that Bowie "copied" Rebel Rebel from Wayne County's Queen Age Baby), and it's clear from listening to both that you haven't got a clue about music! They are *nothing* like each other. "Rebel Rebel" is *far* superior to the County song which is just a bog standard rock n roll song. You may as well claim Bowie copied Rebel Rebel from Pinky & Perky!

Cool, Never would have heard this without the magic of UA-cam.
I wish they had kept Bowie's (?) guitar vamp at the outro in the released version - love the juxtaposition of that gnarly diamond dogs guitar with the swingin' arrangement.

In the booklet in the "Sound + Vision" boxset, David mentions this version. In my "Bowie: covers+" playlist. Thanks or the upload!
Bowie certainly an ancient dinosaur, going back to Twiggy and Lulu seems eons ago. I like this duet and Lulu still singing, looks good.
I can assure you it's not me singing on this (!)
I got it from the Absolutely Rare album, and apparently was recorded with Lulu in late 1973. Several websites talking about Absolutely Rare also say this. Big fan of this song, darn lulu you lucky woman!!!
they still sound like they are singing two different songs
I love this - I have a poster of Lulu and Bowie on mt wall from that period. It's from, the now defunct, Disc music paper, and is 35 years old - I live in China now - and somehow it suits China, I don't know why.
In Lulus book she says there were songs recorded other than Man who sold the world but never released.

False advertising, SassySuzi. This is clearly NOT a duet... It's a backing track with a Bowie guide vocal for Lulu to learn the song...
Not very powerful. Just sounds like someone singing along to Bowie, not really WITH in the sense of actually improving or adding a little something-something. I don't like it.
Once the female sings up on the long outro she's clearly revealed to be Lulu, however.
Just sounds like someone singing along with a bowie record
The drugs were taking their toll at this point. Bowie was releasing crap but didn't care.
Nope nope. Nope. That’s what he’d *like* you to think…
Many thanks to the duo of David Bowie and Lulu!
happy birthday david. i miss you terribly.thank you for showing me that in art you can do everything you can´t in real life.and specially that i dont have to impress anyone to do what i feel.
So like the background soundtrack of my yoof.
This isn't even a demo. It's a recording of Lulu in the middle of learning the song from Bowie's guide vocal.

This Lulu song is fabulous!
Go sign our petition show your support for the sensational songstress!
shame this hasn't been filmed
great duet & thanx for sharig it
I really like this version with Lulu.
Yeah, this is legit> It's been around for much longer than the video and Lulu was at the session, this version was just never released because of licensing issues.

So much BS in one sentence!
Ronson did not play guitar on Rebel Rebel, Bowie did.
Doesn't sound much like Lulu and the music (along with Bowie's vocals) are the final version of the song. WOW! Thank you very much!
her timing is awful

i love this song

This just sounds like someone singing along and recorded badly to the Bowie track...
This is the same version as on Ryko's Diamond Dogs reissue, except that they mixed Lulu's vocal out & faded the track early before releasing it...
Well sure he played guitar live on Rebel Rebel and 1984/Dodo (including the studio version which was the last recording with him and Trevor Bolder). Wasn't clear from what you said though. Sorry.
True gem.
Love to hear a completed version.
Bowie's Tin of Stewing Steak
Good
I agree with BigDeanoSyd: it's got the same 'choked' words as on the bonus track that came with "Diamond Dogs".
This would have been wonderful as a more polished-up released track.
I've only just heard this little gem. It does have potential. Then do you mean that song was recorded in a French castle?
Obviously just a demo.
God, no wonder it was UNreleased... HA! Bowie sounds fine as usual, but her timing is stiff, and voice somehow just doesn't mesh well with Bowie's. And regardless... the song sucks! lol
how does it suck???
+Ziggy Stardust I would like it and buy it if they remastered it and only had Bowie singing but that most likely will never happen
There is a version I believe, just search “David Bowie dodo” on UA-cam and you should find it!
If anyone doesn't know, these two were lovers.
not!!!
Yes, but just for a little period, during the session
A bit, but similarly Bowie singing the segment of Rebel Rebel on VH1 recreates the original really well, and there's about twenty odd years between the two.
rubbish song with boston pops style backing
wow this is so bad i heard its coz she couldnt learn the song wow nice ziggy pic tho
I hate Lulu....why is she trying to outsing Bowie by singing some of the worlds louder and faster?!?!
Cozmo it's a better version.
David starts off louder, and then Lulu steps up the vocals towards the end. Common technique in many duets. They were lovers if you didn't know, so I bet this if mostly for fun.
Cozmo
she is f---ing joke, Bowie is the quintessential professional, he must had needed her money, she can't sing, sounds like an annoying mother, how did she surface after all this time?
Lol is this a joke?
hahah you must be joking, all of you :D
Bowie and Lulu? Why didn't he pick better women???????
You're a poor judge of shaggability. She also has a terrific voice and a great accent.
To @SIR46661 below, I've heard that shite before (that Bowie "copied" Rebel Rebel from Wayne County's Queen Age Baby), and it's clear from listening to both that you haven't got a clue about music! Me recordó un poco a its not a game
