  • Back to the Newell videos! For those of you who are new to the channel this 1996 Newell Coach is actually my house. I have several videos on my channel like a full tour, custom straight pipe on the series 60, etc. I am finally getting into the nitty gritty of freshening it up. Starting with the air bags!

Remember that lesson that you learned at Newell...never judge a customer by how they appear..being in retail biz I've had guys come in that wanted to discuss some giant custom stereo in an old Impala...only to watch the guy walk out to a $500 car .....because I took him seriously an hour later the guy pulls up in a brand new Chevy truck pulling custom 64 Impala on a trailer...and pre pays the 20 grand custom stereo...and the guys brings car after car for years to come...customer for life

Loud Elvis you are absolutely right!! I spent 6 years in retail. Always told my employees to never judge a book by its cover and it’s true. Don’t know how many times we had customers pull Up in old beaters, covered in shit, looking like they lived in it, and drop $15k on a new set of pool equipment paid in cash without blinking an eye. Employees were always amazed at this. Who knows, some guys aren’t ego driven and have to drive their mazzerati everywhere they go to impress people. They are normal human beings like the rest of us. Could’ve done all their yard work that morning and had their project car they’ve been slowly working on sitting so they decided to climb in and put a few miles on her to just run it. Just happened to swing by the pool store on their drive and go ahead and buy the pool equipment that needed while out. Ya never know! Sounds like Newell likes everyone’s money, which is always good business. No need to discriminate, everyone’s cash spends to same and still pays your bills. Treat everyone fairly and like a “customer” & you’ll be successful!!

Same age and an inch taller hehe. Anyways, as a Diesel Tech when using those big torque wrenches you’ll have more force and leverage when tightening or loosening when you have the handle closer to the ground, use your body weight instead of your arms and it’ll be easier.

I worked for Volvo Truck North America for 17 years as a class A painter.. Seen so much impressive things there as far as airbags, fittings, lines and there operation systems. There are so many cool things to think about making, or doing with that cool stuff. once you see all the systems lined out, and understand them. its like let me at it.. i bet I could do this ... or that.... lol. Its like walking into a speed shop or even a junk yard. With a wad of money in your pocket, and up to no good with your buddys. Just waiting for one of them to start the bullshit idea to start building something not needed.. immediately!! Save your old bags (i know you will) but they may help in a pinch. With an aux air line from the coah, they make fast jacks, or even a type of porta power for mashed things that needs ... well fixed. Looking good man.

There's a part number on the side of those air bags that you can cross reference with Good Year or firestone , buy them at local truck shop . It might be a good idea to change air dryer a long with air cartridge with all that water in your system . You probably got a lot of gunk in those lines and air system and tanks , I would drain those tanks about 3 or 4 times everyday for about a week once you get everything done . With all that water you might want to change your brake chambers , the springs get rusted and they break . Its a good thing its not december or january because you would be screwed , all that water would be frozen and you would not be able to release your parking brakes . Truckers have problems with that happening in the winter months . Any way your coming along with things and everything will get done soon enough . Enjoying your video's as always keep up the good work .

If you have a couple pry bars or a shovel to put under the tire to help lift it and work it off or on the wheel studs. I like a shovel, it slides better across the ground and then you just push the handle down to lift it on the studs. Cool videos and keep pushing forward.

Not sure if it’s typical in the US but we (Australia) have ball valves on the bottom of the air tank and a small chain or wire run to the chassis rail and in industry part of your pre start checks is to ‘drain air tanks daily’ . Depending on the truck and your environment it is amazing the amount of moisture developed in 24 hours. Really enjoying the content bud.

Next time you have a stuck fitting. What I do and works most of the time take a hammer and a flat nose punch and smack one of the flats real good a couple of times. Do it on the opposing flat as well if you can get to it. Usually breaks up the corrosion. If it works up here in Canada where we have lots of road salt it should work down there. What also works is just heat one flat of the fitting with even a propane torch also breaks up the corrosion as well
If you heat the whole fitting the heat transfers into the fitting it's connected to and therefore they both expand rather than just the fitting you want off. Keep up the great work.

Lots of great comments on the manual air bleed valves that can be installed to more easily bleed the air. There are also auto blenders that "spit' the water out when it gets on the diaphram... you hear this on some big rigs when you are next to them at a red light. I use the auto air tank bleed valves on my rig and they work amazing. Good content and great attitude.

In fact, I was putting together my e-bike and couldn't screw on the left side pedal. I tried for a half hour, cussing and swearing. I was ready to retap the thing until I turned it the opposite direction and it went on perfectly. DUH!!!

Thumbs up, this is the video I been waiting to see, bags & flexible hoses are usually where the big air leaks are. You may need a Bud Lug socket on the dual wheels, it has a square inside to remove the stud that holds the inside wheel. After having to call the Tire Co. to remove one of mine that
I couldn't break lose even with a cheater pipe on my wrench I got a Milwaukee 18 volt 3/4 impact wrench to keep in my vehicle, works great.

The slight rotational force caused by the lug nuts rotating around the wheel hub in motion sets up an epicyclic movement and causes the lug nuts to loosen on the driver's side and tighten on the passenger side. That's why some passenger and many commercial vehicles have reverse threaded lugs on the driver's side.

I'm not a pro HDT tech but two things I've learned from working on my personal trucks: Typically those left hand studs have L stamped in them to let you know they are opposite. Also I would stay after getting that air system dried out, especially if you plan to be anywhere it gets cold. That water freezing can be a real disaster.

The desiccant air filter (for air brake/suspension/airhorn system to remove moisture) This is one area that is often neglected or overlooked for maintenance. I never see on any of the the many RV (motorhome) UA-cam channels where people need to replace the desiccant air filter for motorhome chassis air systems. You need to add to your chassis maintenance schedule to replace annually the desiccant air filter for the air brake, air suspension and air horn system which removes moisture from that system. It looks like a big oil filter. This is often overlooked but should be done annually.
I'm guessing the previous owner never replaced the desiccant air filter. Make sure you change it per chassis specifications. They are not that expensive so I would put it on your annual or every other year schedule depending on how much you are running your chassis air systems each year. Years ago they recommended it less frequently but not at least every other year but like I said for the small cost and easy job I would just put it on your annual schedule. I will make your chassis air systems and tanks last much longer without all the moisture getting into your air systems.

The bag hose the fitting on the each end of the hose are removeable. They are a "field service" style of hose end. The female end is right hand thread and will screw out of the outer end on the hose. The outer section of the fitting is LEFT hand thread. When installing the outer piece/sleeve run it down the hose just until it contacts end of hose do not force it over If you do you will not get the female insert to thread onto the hose - Search field serviceable hose ends Parker Hanaford for more info

Also- change out the fittings on those air tanks to the ones they make for commercial vehicles; they come with lines that you run out to the side so you can drain the H2O out without having to go under the vehicle.

Awesome content bro. I meantioned last week on one of the Race Week videos, that I was going to FL2K, on the 10th. (Saturday) "The guy running around with camera's.) Don't know if you'd remember that comment from that video. But unfortunately I'm not going to make it. My young brother got sick, and he was my transpo to go, being that I'm disabled and run around in a mobility chair. I know (tmi), lol. It's just, when I says anything, I do my best to do it, so just wanted to throw that out there. One of these days, we'll meet at some drag racing event.

Aww, PS... Those threads are right-hand threads that you were taking off. Looking at the nut or bolt, to the right (clockwise), to the left counter-clockwise. Normally...

Hey Mitchell been following since Race Week. Love the videos brother. Been catching up on the Newell vids. Just a suggestion on the hoses, when you have to have more of them made. Fleet Pride is a joke and always has been. I’m a lot like you and frequent/spend my $$ at places that give a shit. I know the southwest hose place made you air hoses. There’s a company called Midwest Hose. They do any and all types of lines, hoses, etc. They’ll be much cheaper to have those air lines made. They have massive warehouses, great stock, and awesome customer service. I’ve had them make all kinds of hydraulic, air, oil, brake lines for stuff I couldn’t either find or oem stuff was outrageous on pricing. We had a hydraulic forklift on a delivery truck that had 20-30 hydraulic hoses on it. Manufacture/service company wanted $200 for each hose. 3/4” lines with basic a/n fittings. Midwest hose made them for $15-20 each to the exact specs which worked perfectly and stronger than oem lines as far as fittings and line itself. Sorry to ramble but Midwest hose is my go to for all “custom” lines! Hopefully this helps. I’m
Pretty sure they have a location in Dallas or ft worth, so being in Arlington you should have a couple of them decently close. Good luck with the Newell brother. That thing is TITS!!

Stapleton42 yeah I remember that. I was just commenting on that because you went by fleet pride and they were lazy f***s. Just a bit of advice for future hoses/fittings! Good luck brother and safe travels in the Newell

I have to start the process of replacing bags on a 98 Monaco 42. Some of the rears have been done recently, so I don't need to do all 10, but probably at least 6. Not looking forward to it.
