- Houston Music Theatre , 1967.
In a 1977 interview Stacy Sutherland tells about this night:
"The most mystic vision I ever had was concerning a show we did here in Houston, Theatre In The Round [a k a Houston Music Theatre]. And I had taken some acid, I hadn't had any in quite a while, and it was a super strong dose, about a 1,000 microgram or something. And we had to do a concert, and all of a sudden everyone started glowing. They had a foot of light, like a neon light around them in the room... real bright. And everyone started glowing away, and I freaked out that I was going to die or something.
I had some bad trips before, but nothing like this. And then everybody turned into wolves, and I thought that our band was evil, because of some of the things we had advocated. We had had a controversy going on quite a while about advocating drugs and so forth, and mixing it with religion, you know. 'Cause I felt like that was pretty dangerous ground to tread.
And Tommy and I were arguing about that quite a bit. I got on a bummer about it evidently.
And I was tryin' to escape the room, I didn't know what I was gonna do, but I was gonna get out of there. I didn't want anything to do with it 'cause everybody was turning into animals. And all of a sudden there were angels, and I couldn't move my body anymore. I lost physical feeling all over and I was laying on the floor. And everybody turned into angels, and everybody in the room was the judge at my trial to decide whether I was worthy to enter heaven or hell. Because it was absolute that I was going to die anyway you know. And there was one good angel, and I felt like I'd been there before, many times, not just once. But, I'd been in this circumstance with these same people, and the whole time that I was there I was talkin' with these cosmic spirits you know, as judges. I knew who they were as people, as models, but I knew that they didn't realize what role they played in my existence on this earth. And this one angel told me that two or three different events were going to take place in my life. And every one of them came true within 2 years."
God bless their tragic souls. I've never tired of the Elevators.
btw, the Texas band The Conqueroo are involved in this "Jam".
Stacy in not playing guitar in here. He was tripping so hard that he could barely make it through the first songs I think. (the whole set is very sloppy, missingg guitar parts, roky forgetting the lyrics, etc etc etc, this is actually the highlight of that night) The Audio Source is Professional as this was meant to be an Official Live Recording, but the guys took too much LSD and things got weird. ....This is part of a "Jam" with other band,The Conqueroo, i read somewhere that the managers of thew band or show tried to calm Stacy with some Weed, but it actually made it "worse" per se....i mean, weed intensifies the LSD high...this comes from a bootleg called "Death in Texas"... meaning it was a catastrophe to the Internationall Artists label, as they invested in recording this show, but it serves them well, they fucked up with the Elevators anyways...
I later learned if I came home on a bummer or having too much to dream , all I had to do was go to the medicine cabinet and take a couple of Valium’s . This was in the seventies mind you living at home. But in their case it went as planned. Or something . Great recording ! I wonder if the future ZZ Top dudes were there ?
"And things got weird" lol😆
This is my favorite song
Considering Stacy's condition with the wolves and angels, he pulls of some amazing riffs throughout this track. I never heard this one, amazing what pops up here on youtube. Thanks to the uploader for this one!!
actually Stacy in not playing in here. He was tripping so hard that he could barely make it through the first songs I think. The Audio Source is Professional as this was meant to be an Official Live Recording, but the guys took too much LSD and things got weird. ....This is part of a "Jam" with other band,The Conqueroo, It is a fact that Stacy is not playing guitar in this part, i think he nevear played in this show, he has tripping so hard that he couldnt play....So its a guitarist from another band and Roky.
could listen to this on loop forever.
I love how certain songs. In the right mood and mind set. You can almost feel the room it was recorded in (especially on psychedelics) My mind feels cloudy after this one lol.
What is the Houston Music Theater , this is the Living Eye!Saw them there well over 10 times , the only place where the ceiling was like this , the rest had things that looked like they could fall , a Heart Beating and Fog to lay down and smoke a Joint , Silber at Westview , we lived on Longpoint not far in a Psychedelic Painted 5 bedroom House , named the Sadhouse after being raided, beat . We painted the trees candy stipped , it was our Jam House , Pigs eat the 3 OZ Brownies , never came back
yep, my bad, i used a photo from other time, still captures and goes well with the song...
Thank you so much for uploading this gem track.
God bless you.
"No drugs were involved during this performance."
Perfect as possible...jamming...
fuckin wonderful.. pure psychedelia
✌ sounds like freedom
2:38 haha love how Roky starts singing like a preacher on tribune :D
Que tal misticismo el de esta versión! Tremenda atmósfera nostálgico psicodelica la que genera la conjunción de los instrumentos.Ni hicieron falta las voces.Sin duda, uno de los mejores covers.
That photo is not at the theater in the round, its at the Livinng Eye, great music venue that was up in tHouston's Spring Branch area.. I never remembered how to get there - was always too messed up to recall...lol
yep, did not find an actual pic of the era/venue, but i used that that seemed cool, and tinted it a bit... awesome you were in that venue... cheers...
living eye was located at 1493 silber road, Houston.
Rad,,, Sounds like The Brian Jonestown Massacre jamming
" People are gonna talk to you about individual freedom but they see a free individual, it's gonna scare 'em..."
with the elevators, LSD was always involved
I bet this is what Bob Dylan listens to as he goes to bed.
I know this ceiling... This was taken in Austin in 1966 at a club called The IL at 12th and Rosewood in East Austin. IL stood for Ira Littlefield who owned the place. Where black folks and hippies hung out at the time..... Ira L. had a card that said "Our hippie dancing whips Shock Theater." (Shock Theater was a late night TV show featuring horror movies.)
acid is nice
it suuure is
Peace.
Amazing version, does this exist as vinyl pressing?
It is on the "Easter Everywhere" lp. Should still be available on vinyl. My copy has only been played about 10 times as I recorded to cassette. Cheers.
The studio version is on Easter Everywhere, but not this live version. Which is a shame as the flute/jug??? solo is beautiful.
TheMonohub
Fuck!!! This is a fantastic version. I've listened to it on loop since its discovery.
this has been released on cd called
live evolution lost, Houston 1967
How about a new reality show where people trip each night. That would make good watching. Better than some of the crap on the idiot box now.
ha ha make em take the acid test.
Tommoyanks bloody excellent idea. Best I've heard for many a decade 😎🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄😎
Damn 1,000 micrograms!! That’s a lot
LOL!! No it's not a gram. Micro=millionth. 1000 mics would be like 1/1000 of a gram, but with acid that's still a whole fucking lot. 😄
It’s a milligram. Four times the dose of a regular heavy trip.
Siempre❤️
Did you get your name from a Boards of Canada song?
February 18, 1967.
A thumb print can enlighten you, or frighten you. Or both.
always thought LSD was involved
These guys are putting on a clinic for how to beat three chords to death.
lysergic war protest dylanified and texified Roky RIP....
God everybody’s playing over each other, so sloppy. And Roky is all over the place, it’s sad.
@tommoyanks i'd watch it!
@KarlJoensenMusic 'Trip Brother'
and i heard that the sound quality on this was shitty!
👁 🤗

Ryan Flynn Dylan
It's All Over Now, Baby Blue;
Bob Dylan.
That's not the Elevators. Flutes, no jug, no Rocky. At least not the classic Elevators. The more I listen it does sound like Stacy's guitar.
Roky is singing
love ♠️🔪🔪🔪
I see a lot of nostalgia in this comment section, and that's cool, but in actuality this performance is not fit for an 8th grade talent show.
BS
Tune your guitars! Yikes.
