- In this video I fly my 106" AJ Raven remote control airplane with various rates and exponential on the elevator and discuss how each of the changes affects my flying style and what needs to be done to correct for the changes. Everyone has a different flying style, therefore setting up a plane is not a one size fits all process.

Great video... and better yet is the explanation on the video... I watched it a couple of times and need to watch again.. when you are switching the rates, I personally can hardly notice any difference in your stick movements.. in the video they all kind of look the same .. BUT when you explain the difference then it all comes together... the relationship between the prop, expo, rate, CG as you said is indeed a very important. Its like walking a tight rope, on a windy day, while joggling..
You’re spot on. And it goes to show you that you can actually fly with your rates not entirely dialed in, you just have to work harder at it. I’m happy to hear that pointing out the subtleties helps to make sense.

It’s such a fun discipline to learn. I’m happy to hear that you’re begging to fly 3D as well! Take your time and practice often and you will get there. I love that you look forward to my videos. Everyone that is good was a beginner at one time. Just practice with intention and practice a lot. Don’t get discouraged when it’s not easy, embrace the challenge and have fun.
I was practicing harriers in figure 8's as well as drop in's so almost the whole pack was used with high stick and elevator travel. Because I'm a thumb flyer my hand was really cramping up and I too had to readjust my thumb many times throughout the flight. I'm not used to that style of flying. I'm the opposite of yourself. All these years I've flown the wing. Scale aerobatics and Imac maneuvers. I really enjoyed learning and trying new things this season. It sure is scary flying my aircraft that deep into the stall. But now I'm addicted:)
This is awesome to hear! I love it. Piece of advice, point the top of your Tx towards the ground this will allow your wrists to be in line with your thumbs and it is far more ergonomic. My thumbs used to cramp up as well and I found that by holding my Tx low and down in front of me instead of flat, the angle between my wrist and thumb joint is not bent and walla cramping was gone. It’ll take a minute to get used to, yet it does work.

@@yodecaf I’m not gonna lie, it’s so tempting to cut out the mistakes. Yet I hope in the long run people will have the same appreciation for it as you do. We’re all talented in different ways. My goal in keeping it real is to show that while I’m good at some things I’m just a scrub when it comes to others. We can all get better together.

I’m so happy to hear that you not only recognize it, you are working to implement it in your own flying. That there makes all this work worth it!
Very nice video. I am transitioning to low and slow due to vision problems. Skill wise it is VERY challenging. Enjoy all your videos.
Welcome to the dark side! Yes it is definitely challenging yet well worth it when it all comes together. I struggle with vision issues for a really long time as well. Low and slow and up close is a good solution. The video that I’m currently editing focuses on flying small and close. Just focus on flying steady and avoid anything abrupt, it will come together. I’d love to see your progress in time!! Best of luck.

These videos are the best I have seen. I am trying to learn harrier and hover on a Dancing Wings SBACH foamy. I am having a real problem with wing rock. I can't seem to get a fast enough connection between my aeleron movements and actual response to get it locked in. I have no problem on a simulator with a Multiplex Parkmaster. Obviously practice is a big issue but are some planes really difficult in this respect? I have tried many different expos and rates. Have you any beginner's tips for controlling wing rock?
It sounds like your tail is just not getting enough air across it to hold it down or your ailerons are over correcting. Try moving your expo on your ailerons to 70-75%, increase your throw on your elevator to at least 49 degrees or as high as 55 (I almost never go above 50 myself) and make sure you are using enough throttle to hold the tail down. You may want to consider going up in pitch on you prop slightly as well. If you have the time review my inverted harrier video. I believe that may help you with your issue. And... some planes are just really tough to get them to behave.
This morning I was trying to tame down a 60" EF MXS... I thought of an idea that might help you create a few more videos in this regard. How about a video that shows which manoeuver will help to find out the rates and expos easier especially on a new plane... for example, I like to dial in my rates and expos in mid rate while doing harrier and hover... and dial in my HIGH CRAZY rates while practicing pop top and blender.. etc.. and of course low rates for taking off and landing. just thought of it.
It’s an interesting thought. I do the same thing with my 3D rates and rolling harriers. That is how I fine tune the expo. The problem is for most people learning the rolling harrier is the moon. I’ll play around with this idea a bit more.
I have to be honest, i use expo but rarly use a switch for rates. I just learned how to do things all with the same rates and expo. Some planes are harder than others to do this with, but i kind of like the challenge without remembering what mode im in. But everyone is different. I like the skill of flying no matter how the controls are setup. I may take some time to fine tune each plane but after that its just a learned skill.
Everyone has a different way of doing things and the beauty of it is that nobody is wrong. The goal here is more to show someone what I am experiencing with the different rates and expos in the hope that they may be able to better dial in their planes by knowing what to look for. I know plenty of pilots the never flip a switch and conversely some flip switches so often they sound like a typewriter when flying. As long as you’re having fun and your skills are not limited by your set-up I’d say you’re definitely on the right track.

Thank you for the kind complement. I'm sorry the subtitles are somewhat confusing. The essence of what I am trying to demonstrate with this video is the slower you fly, the more sensitive your elevator needs to be OR if you prefer to use more expo you will need to compensate for that by increasing the thrust over the tail by either surging the throttle or using a higher pitch propeller. As far as advice for someone new to 3D, start by getting a good quality RC Factory foamy they are by far the best tool for learning. Then make sure that you are practicing constantly. Start with harriers and hovering and get comfortable with how the plane flies and reacts while in high alpha. Take your time and try not to do too much, make each maneuver intentional. While I will say yes it does apply to the rudder, I tend to use much more expo (70%) on my ailerons. I want my tail to be active and my wings to be stable when flying slow.
