    Hello. I really wish you could help me out.
    I've been raising 2 female quails for 9 months now. They've been best friends since day one and they enjoy each other's company. Suddenly one day, one of the female quails laid an egg without a shell, and after that moment, suddenly she became aggressive towards the other quail. Because of that I can't keep them together anymore, it became so dangerous for the bullied one. So I separated them. But I really want to know how I can stop this aggression and put them together like before.
    Sorry for the long story and hope you can help.

      @@Slightlyrednecked EMERGENCY.....I believe the rooster I have justed pecked the living hell out of a hen this morning, blood all over her head, from under each eye and all along the back of the head... covered with blood, bare flesh it seems on the back of the head, one other bird seems to have an injured wing in the same hutch, maybe injured by the rooster or injured itself in the commotion. Removed the rooster, it had blood on its beak, at least I think it might be a rooster only have them a week, it was doing alot of crowing when I isolated it but didn't sound exactly like the crowing examples on UA-cam. Have the hen removed also with a heated blanket on a thermostat over one half of her pen to help fight off infection 23 degrees Celsius at a couple of inches above head height. 9ml of Apple cider Vinegar per litre of water there for her also, shes pretty shook. I have F10 Super Concentrate disinfectant and 99% alcohol for treating the wound if necessary. 57 eggs went into the incubator yesterday following your advice. Any advice on the injury would be greatly appreciated. EDIT... yeah 3/4 of her skin on the back of her head slides open depending on how her head is twisted/extended ....brutal. Flushed it with salt water, then sugar water, then poured sugar on top and another light drop of sugar water to dissolve the sugar granules on her head. I know you stated not to take out the injured/bullied bird but it seemed like the injury was excessive....and I thought I was doing well this morning, the universe sure loves a curve ball.

      @@icxcnika9399 hey, your problem may have cleared up, but in case it helps, I used a broad spectrum bird antibiotic on my when after repeated bloody attacks from the male, and she has recovered twice using it. BUT I don't know the correct script, I just gave tiny amounts (two drops of liquid sulfadim by aristopet) twice per day for two weeks, and then stopped, and did not eat her eggs (shame, waste), for the next 4 weeks (6 weeks of no eggs all up), as the antibiotic should not be consumed by humans at all, and she needed time to get it out of her system (I assumed this was long enough). May have saved her life twice though. But separate the wounded female (still within seeing and earshot so they know she is there and to make reintroduction easier), and either syringe feed two drops or put drops in her water, make her area peaceful and quiet while she recovers, no loud sounds and easy to get food and water if she can't see. We had to dip her little beak in water a lot so she would be able to find it, then eventually food too. They need to eat to regain strength!! Poor things. Result of a fallen world.

    Super excited to start incubating this week! When I first started I really just wanted them for eggs for my reptiles so I got a roo and hen plain Coturnix and a pair of Texas A&M hens. About a month or two into keeping them one Texas A&M hen was getting so badly bullied by the rest that I had to cull her so she wouldn't suffer.. it wasn't only her back of her neck but all over here sides too and it all happened over less than 3 days. I was wondering if it was because she was such a different color but the remaining A&M hen seems just fine for the last few weeks and both are laying great. Either way, we culled and ate her and it made us want to start breeding them for meat so here goes nothing! Watched all your hatch rate videos last night. Thanks!

    Also add lots of water jugs, just use any thing to the same room that your incubator is in, as your central a.c. is DRY air, that U sucking on top of your eggs. So add water in your incubator room, raised moisture will keep the eggs OK on the 14 - thru 17 or 23 day hatch for quail eggs. Room MUST Be at least 70 degree's warm as well. You cannot have cold air sucking into, and on your eggs for 17 days, and expect a great hatch.

    We have had trouble with our texas a&m males leaving the females featherless on their backs and heads so we gave each rooster a 4 square foot pen with his own 3 hens, they are much calmer and we are hoping the girls feathers will come back in soon. We also have the same setup for our chickens works well if you have the space for multiple pens. Also our bulldogs seem more relaxed now that the birds are calmer. Thanks!

    • @nccrchurchunusual7990
      @nccrchurchunusual7990 Рік тому +1

      I had that happen too. I removed the male & let the hens heal- they were bloody-all of them. Since I am not breeding right now, just eating the eggs, it worked out. I think my problem is my male needed another hen or two, but my cage is too small to add more birds. In your case, could it be the unharmed hen picking on her sisters? If there's blood on an unharmed bird, remove it, see if the others settle. If that bird is obviously trying to kill other birds keep her by hersself for the eggs or cull her. Happy quailing.

I separated the birds 3 female to 1 male, half in the upper cage and the rest stayed put. Should I continue this way or should I get rid of the male trouble seeker and put them all back together? Thanks

    For my family, if one quail is stuck with another, they start pecking each other. How can you stop them from fighting like this? (sometimes, we mix the quail breeds.)

  • @markwilliams6375
    @markwilliams6375 7 років тому +1

    Very few people realize all eggs must be kept at 50 - 55 degree"s for storage. Just freeze 2 1/2 gallon milk jugs filled only 60 per cent full of water, so the frozen jug wont split open, . and place 1/2 jugs inside of a 1 gallon milk jug cut in half, to catch all sweating water, inside of a large ice chest, and be sure to turn all eggs at least 2 times a day, . prefer every 6 hours, while in storage, before you want to hatch. Remember all eggs will start to incubate at 70 degrees or above. Never store eggs longer than 7 days, and add water inside of the ice chest, to keep humidity high. Don't want embryos to dry out.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 років тому +1

      That is good advice but it isn't really that strict. I have kept eggs for a week just sitting on the counter at 75 degrees and not turning and they hatched just fine. For best results though you do need to keep them cooler. I did an entire video series on storing and hatching eggs that you might like.

    I have 4 Jumbo quail. 3 female and 1 male. They were hatched from 1 dozen
    eggs. They are now 10 weeks old and have always been together. (Culled
    the extra males at 4 weeks). Two females are now constantly fighting. I
    separated them and tried putting them back together after three days but
    they go back to fighting. Are they jealous of the one male? Cage is 3

It didn't go that bad until one quail instantly started aggressively attacking it. The crazy thing is that it was only the one quail that started attacking it. After watching your video I realized 1. I need to verify how many male and female quail I have 2. Identify any abnormal aggressors

I’ve got a question, I’ve recently decided upon trying to raise quail (coturnix) myself and I’ve been doing a whole lot of research especially on your Chanel among a few other ones, and every Chanel has a different approach when it comes to how to start incubating quails. I have ordered an incubator off amazon that pretty much does all the work from keeping humidity levels to turning the eggs every day. The only obstacle I’m coming across is the fact that I had to order my quail hatching eggs online. Besides the fact that I’m a bit skeptical about it being delivered via amazon, I was wondering am I supposed to immediately put the eggs into the incubator the second they arrive or is there some other measure I need to take before beginning the process?

      Thanks so much for the kind comments. I always let the eggs rest at room temperature for a day before incubating them. I am sure you have seen it already but I do have a playlist on my channel page for hatching and storing eggs. It covers everything that you need to do. I can't speak for eggs ordered off of Amazon but i have had good luck with shipped eggs. if yours don't do well check with Kansas City Quail Farms. Great selection of birds and great hatch rates on shipped eggs.

    Thanks , I love your vids. I am new to quail, I have 6 hens for eggs. They just started laying, getting about 4 eggs a day. However, all of a sudden the biggest hen is like a goon on the 4th line of a hockey team....running everyone. Jumping on them and pecking them pretty good. 2 have some blood at the base of their beaks . I have her in a cage above all on her own now ( penalty box), for a day or so to see if she mellows out. Do you think this is a good idea? Or should I have quail for supper ?
    Thanks

      @Slightlyrednecked  6 років тому

      Sometimes you get an aggressive bird. It can be aggravated by too much light (over 15 hours a day) or sometimes they just get that way when they hit the breeding cycle (start laying eggs). Usually they will mellow out with just a little bit of time once the pecking order is established. If not, just eat the aggressive bird like you suggested. Hope that helps.

    Hello Chris. Enjoy your videos. I bought 7 Jumbo Pharoah about 6 or 7 weeks ago off Craig's list. They were about 3 weeks old. It was supposed to be 1 Male, and 6 Females. I'm knew to this, so I I'm not used to sexing birds so I assumed that's what I got. Things went great until a little over a week ago. Then, I found one dead one morning. Couldn't tell if he was killed, or just died from something. About 5 days later, right before dark I noticed a severely wounded bird with blood all around it's neck. The next morning, it was dead. Things seemed OK for a few days, but I had gotten an extra cage just in case. Then, I noticed it. I had two males in there, and now 3 females. It's possible one of the birds that died was a male too, I just don't know. The 3 females were getting more and more scalped. The largest of the two males, was by far the most aggressive of the two. I removed both males and put in the new cage. The larger one immediately started attacking the smaller male, so I put the smaller male back in the other cage. Going to try and get more females by the end of the month, but not always easy to find. Anyway, not sure if I'll reintroduce the aggressive male or not. Just going to wait and see what happens, and watch the other male and make sure the hens don't get even more beat up or he'll have to go too. Any other suggestions?

      I am sorry to hear that you are having those problems. It does sound like you have an overly aggressive bird there. I would watch him pretty closely and if he doesn't calm down I would send him to the freezer. I don't tolerate over aggression in my birds. I don't want to pass those genes on.

    Found your site today - great videos! I have a quick question re Button Quail. Do they tend to groom each other or are they heading towards feather picking? My little ones are just now starting to lay and out of 13 (in a 2x4 foot cage) I know I have at least three hens. Today I saw three (one of which I know is a hen) all huddled together gently grooming each other. NO aggression whatsoever, the groomee was obviously enjoying the attention of the groomer! Is this sextual behavior, indicative of gender, or just because they are clutch mates and happy with each other? Thanks!

      Unfortunately quail toes look a lot like little worms. As long as they have plenty of food available to them they should stop doing that on their own. That is one reason whey it is not suggested to feed meal worms to young quail. Unfortunately I am not sure that there is much else you can do really.

    I'm 13, (so I can't drive) and one day I bought quail eggs at the store. I hatched two, one died at four days old, and got two more. Now I have 3 birds, two ended out being roosters. They fight at night, and today I woke up and my original roo, named nugget, had been beaten up. His forehead is plucked so much it's bleeding. He is imprinted, so he is tame, and I keep him in my house now for the time being. I'm contacting a breeder, and there is a female I have my eye on to even out the female to male ratio. My parents just wont drive me there to pick her up. What should I do?

    Can quails compete broiler chicken weight for weight? I want to have a regular meat supply, two chickens a week is average requirement.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  6 років тому +1

      I am not sure about broiler chickens. I have never raised them. Quail are no where near the size of broiler chickens but I would say that the equivalent to one chicken is probably around 6 quail. You could do enough to have 12 quail a week to eat but it would be a big pen. Of course if you are raising enough to have 2 chickens a week that is a big operation too. Hope that helps.

    About two weeks ago I culled the extra roosters from a new flock. Today I noticed one hen that will continuously chase and peck at the nearest bird. She isn't doing any damage, but as soon as one bird runs away from her she goes straight for the next nearest bird. As long as she isn't causing viable damage should I leave her alone, or could she be stressing the other birds out?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  4 роки тому

      That is pretty common. They are establishing a pecking order and it should calm down pretty quickly. Like you said, as long as she isn't doing any real damage, you can just leave her in there. If she gets overly aggressive and starts causing wounds, I would cull her out of the flock if it were me. I hope that helps.

    Hi Chris, I had similar issue with a rooster pecking on one of the three hens in the cage. These 4 quail were together in the cage for about 7 weeks. All of a sudden this rooster started pecking at one of the hens and severely injured her. I moved out this rooster for half a day and returned it back to the group unfortunately overnight it pecked a lot causing severe injuries.
    I am still guessing what has changed suddenly for it to peck. The only change I made was moved their cage into a new room which has a light during the night and temperature was perfect.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  6 років тому

      it probably has to do with the light. If it is on all night long it is too much light. They need some darkness. If it is only on for 14 hours a day then it probably kicked him into breeding mode and he became aggressive due to that. Sometimes you just get an aggressive bird. Those are my best guesses, I hope that helps.

    I got my first quails about 3 weeks ago and they were about 3 to 4 weeks old. They are reaching sual maturity now and some of the males are now showing aggression. I have seen some males mating with the less dominant males which I had to do some research about and i found out that is normal. One of my males got seriously picked one and got his head messed up. I think they were a little too crowded so i separated them and put them in 2 different cages. I think its working because the aggresion seems to have gone down. My issue is that i actually have 5 males and 7 females. I left 4 females with 2 males in one cage and 3 males and 3 females in another. I just hope that my 3 to 3 cage doesnt end up being a disaster. It looks good for now but its only been 1 day.

      It is common for them to get a little aggressive when they first reach maturity and then calm down as they age a little. It does sound like you have too many roosters though. You really only need 1 rooster for every 4 or 5 hens.

    Also they seem to get along fine. The male frequently mates with the female, but there seems no aggression.
    However, just yesterday, the female has been constantly chasing the male, and being very aggressive towards him. Even when I let them out in the backyard the hen is chasing the male.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  6 років тому

      That is pretty common. Aside from separating them there probably isn't much you can do. Most of the time they will calm down after a while but with only 1 female that may not be the case. I generally keep multiple females to each rooster so they don't overbreed the hens.

      Catching escaped Quail: We did a video on this at TullyRiverQuail showing the best and safest way to capture an escaped quail using a fine meshed, long handled minnow net. The mesh count is key so as not to injure the bird. Look for one that has screen sized mesh. Anything bigger you can catch feathers or beaks and makes it difficult to pop them back into the hutch if they're caught up in the netting. We use an old one from Ed's Landing Net out of Michigan which may no longer be available. Our vid shows the best characteristics of such a useful (necessary) device, especially if you raise Bobwhite or flight birds.
