Fun Fact, the ending kind of comes out of nowhere because there was a deleted scene where the translator tells Indiana Jones that you're not supposed to look at the ark when it is opened, this is because in Judaism viewing the Ark is essentially looking at the face of God which mortals can't comprehend.
The Idea is meant to be that Because the Nazi's don't respect Jewish teachings they are destroyed while Indy Survives because he has respected them.

Yeah, the film did pretty good incorporating the short descriptions of the Ark in the Old Testament - from what I recall. Down to the general appearance of the ark. Plus mortals were warned against looking into it, as it would be like 'looking upon the face of God'. Which no mortal could withstand.

My grandfather taught me to not be afraid of snakes. We lived on a farm, and there were plenty of non-venomous black snakes in the area. If he came across one, he'd catch it and bring it to the house for me and my sister to touch. He would then release the snake into what we called a corn crib, a structure he stored corn in that hadn't been removed from the cob yet, where the snake hopefully kept mice away from the corn.

Just a bit of background on the Ark of the Covenant: This is part of the Christian and Hebrew (And I think Moslems as well) religion and dates back to around roughly 3000-1000 BC (Sorry I'm not a Historian, so not sure about the exact dates). The Ark was built by instruction from God to the Hebrews (Jews) while they were on their way to Israel from Egypt. That was when God gave the 10 commandments on 2 rock/clay tablets to Moses the leader of the Hebrews at the time. They were then supposed to put the tablets inside the Ark. There was a believe by some that while carrying the Ark into battle that they would not lose.
There is actually an animated movie "The prince of Egypt" about this exact set of events.
What happened about to the actual Ark is of course pure speculation and what this movie is about. Some of the other Indiana Jones movies are also about mythical Christian artifacts (The holy grail, that supposedly was used to capture Jesus's blood or some such). The holy grail is much more mythical and is not mentioned in religious texts as far as I know.

    • @MartinBeerbom
      @MartinBeerbom 4 місяці тому +1

The Holy Grail became a big part of Arthurian legend, King Arthur of England, the one with Merlin and Lancelot, who sent his knights on a quest to find the grail. Like the real life crusaders who went on a 'quest' to secure the holy lands and became obsessed of artifacts they believed to be associated with Jesus and saints. Hence the 'Crusade' title of the 3rd movie. The mythical artifacts (reliquaries) fill up thousands of churches in Europe (mostly Germany, France and Spain). Like the Golden Shrine in the Cologne cathedral that supposedly houses the bones of the three Magi that visited Jesus, Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem at Jesus' birth. The cathedral in Aachen houses the diapers of Jesus, a dress of Mary, a loincloth of Jesus, and a blanket that was used to carry the head of John the baptist after his decapitation. And so forth. (In Aachen is also a sarcophagus containing the bones of Charlemagne. As opposed to all the other artifacts, these are very probably the real deal.)

    • @bigdream_dreambig

@@MartinBeerbom Very true, the Medieval folks were a superstitious bunch. I read quite a few historical fiction books, and they are rife with these religious trinkets (Also if you play King Crusaders, they are major aspect of the game). Unlike the ark though, that is explicitly mentioned in the religious text like the Bible, and probably did exist at the time (1000 BC), these trinkets were mostly wishful thinking.

Part of what made Spielberg a great director is that he knew how to take a fact, in this case a historical fact and even series of facts, and build a story around it. In this case it was the Ark of the Covenant which really is lost to history, there is debate as to whether or not it existed and depending on which scholar you ask there are different theories as to what happened to it. There is also the fact that Hitler really did have an obsession with ancient relics. Alot of this had to do with the occult which puts heavy emphasis on ancient relics such as the Spear of Destiny and the Holy Grail. He believed that by finding these relics he was ensuring the Third Reichs continuation and success. Another fact which I thought was really cool, mainly because I find spy history really cool to read about, was that the Allies were in fact recruiting anyone with skills and knowledge, like Archeologists, into the different intelligence agencies for a variety of purposes which was the precursor to modern spy craft.

Snakes are actually beautiful animals. I have held them. They are cold to the touch and very smooth and dry. They only attack in self defence if you bother them, so don't bother them and they won't bother you. The snake is more scared of you. You are like a T-Rex to them. A giant. Fearing snakes is like an elephant fearing a mouse.

@aaronmicalowe There is no reason for an elephant to fear a mouse. A man can accidentally stumble across one and receive a deadly bite. It's entirely logical to fear snakes. If you like them, cool, but it's not analogous.

Little fun fact, at 16:30 they had a whole choreographied fight but Harrison was sick that day and didnt felt like it so he improvised just shooting the bad guy wich they kept after all 🙃 also if i can help with this scare of snakes wich seems pretty intense haha, most snakes are harmless, snakes know they cant eat something bigger then the largest part of their body so unless you are attacking or threatening them, theyre pretty gentle, especially non venomous one wich only 10-15% out of every species actually are 😉 this was so fun, hope yall do the other ones, its such a good franchise 😁

The Ahnenerbe was the German group that researched occult things. They were influenced by certain occult groups that had been influencing some of the German elite at least since the interwar period and likely before. They sent agents around Europe and Asian looking for mythic artifacts and locations hoping to find powers that would help them take over the world. They did often disguise their activities as archeology or anthropology expeditions or combined them.
The ship captain wasn't really a traitor. Faced with uboat he didn't have a choice but to surrender and try some ploy to keep his crew alive, and Indie as well. While a surface vessel would have made more sense, the Germans didn't have surface ships in the Mediterranean Sea, only uboats. The Italians had surface ships, but so did the British, and they had planes that could sink Italian ships. So, since the Germans did have some Uboats there, it made sense to have one do this in the movie.

Most of those snakes were non-venomous, the cobra was defanged, and the spiders were basically harmless new world tarantulas... but most people don't know that and it makes for good drama, especially playing on many people's fear of snakes and spiders.
I used to have a pet boa constrictor myself (and a pet tarantula as well). My snake was a sweetheart, and the only thing she ever hurt was the rats she fed on.
Even venomous snakes aren't out to get us and would much rather avoid us. They are just noodles with heads and the world is a scary place for a noodle with a head. If we just take proper precautions when in snake areas, respect them and leave them alone, we'll be fine.
