I've watched quite a few G1000 VNAV videos, but the others did not show as clearly as your video the transition from VNAV descent to final approach and intercepting the glidepath. Thanks for making that so clear!! Glad I found this one!
Mark, a very clear description of the gotchas with VNV on the G1000. Once I've set my IAF altitude (3200 in your example), my SOP is to do nothing (this is your SOP #3) until I hear the audible "vertical track" (from Georgette, George's assistant), which in my DA40 occurs 1 minute before TOD ... then I do the critical steps of (a) pressing VNV on the GFC700 and (b) dialing in the selected altitude. I've always set the selected altitude at the lowest of the blue/cyan altitudes (3000 in your example), but perhaps this opens me up for some unwanted behavior?? Thanks for the excellent video. Wayne
I use the FAF on an approach for consistency -on an LNAV it will be the FAF. But choosing the default Blue is I think just as good and consistent an SOP since the last blue on the LNAV will be the FAF. For hitting VNV, I do all three :D. Activate when I set, reactivate within 5 miles if I notice, and use the minute to TOD as a final backup. Most of my personal SOPs are because I fly so many different types with different equipment, so I try to find ways to do them as similarly as I can. Have you done the RNAV 28L into OAK? It's a great one to demo this. BTW, when will your airplane be ready?
@@midlifeflyer Mark, I have done the RNAV into 28R into KOAK, and it is also cool with several stepdowns (well drive-and-descends) outside the FAF. The G1000/GFC700 loves these. As you know, it must be carefully monitored... a couple times with closely spaced stepdowns I've had the VNV choke and had to command my own descents. New MT propeller is arriving at my shop (KTRK) this weekend, so hope to finally pick her up later in the week (dodging some snowy days in the Sierra). I'm pretty sure the long wait (12 weeks) on the prop was a result of pre-COVID inventory being drawn down during COVID.
Thank you, this video taught me how to use the G1000 VNAV in Flight Simulator 2020.
In this case it works the same way
The clearest and most practical explanation of VNAV feature on G1000 that I have seen. It finally made sense. Thank you, sir!
You are most welcome!

Thank you. That's very kind.
Excellent presentation. Thanks. Your example was very well explained.
I'm glad you found it helpful.
Thank you so much for the Gotchas. Wasn't aware of the 5 minute rule

@@GeezerGeekPilot I meant the right, and yes, because of all those stepdowns.
Clear and neat video.
Thumbs up.
What application/program are you using for the G1000?
Garmin's G1000 trainer for the DA40. There are others for other installations.
