Mike Rashid Debates The Vegan Trend In Bodybuilding | GI Exclusive

  • Is the current vegan trend in bodybuilding real?
Earlier this year, a documentary called The Game Changers was released detailing how meat-based diets are unnecessary and that humans can and should go plant-based. The film made headlines in the bodybuilding world for one big reason - Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared in the film hating on meat and regretting his past chowing down on massive amounts of beef. Shortly after, Kai Greene made a mysterious post on social media implying that he might go vegan. It went viral - and now we are in the era of veganism in bodybuilding. Or are we?
In our latest sit down interview with Mike Rashid, we discussed the vegan trend that seems to be developing in bodybuilding. Rashid had publicly gone plant-based in years past (though he is no longer vegan) and has some experience with how a vegan diet can affect a physique when it comes to bodybuilding and mass monster status. Can a bodybuilder maintain massive muscle on a level like Ronnie Coleman or Kai Greene while only eating meat? And is this really a trend that will catch on in bodybuilding? Or is it just a flash in the pan.
While Mike Rashid was happy with the results of his vegan diet - he does admit it came with a lot of weight loss. This is weight he wanted to lose personally but for a bodybuilder looking to come on stage and do damage with a body size like Brandon Curry or Big Ramy... that might be more of a stretch without meat in your diet.
Mike Rashid expands on the conversation by also discussing intermittent fasting - a diet that has caught on not just in bodybuilding but in mainstream fitness culture across the globe. You can check it all out in our latest GI Exclusive interview above.

Going vegan is very difficult for at least some months. Because your body is not used to forming some important minerals like zinc and magnesium. And that makes you feel dizzy until your body is accustomed to it. You’ll loose weight, feel low and a little weak for a few months. Understanding the deficit and aiding it with proper supplements will help a lot. All you have to know is what are the nutrients that are dominantly coming from you non-veg sources. If you plan it well, it’s easy and very good for your overall health. You’ll feel a drastic change for a few months though. It’s like any other addition. Your body craves for that sensation. A strong mindset is very much required . (Meant for anybody that is willing to go Vegan)

Protein from meat is coming from a secondary source. Now, there is no way a human can eat as much as a cow to satisfy protein needs by a single source, but that's why there is a variety of plant based options available. A 3oz steak has as much protein and calories as 2 tablespoon peanut butter sandwich with quality bread but without the trans fat. Eating a plant based diet is harder and more expensive, but so much more beneficial in the long run. As a weightlifter and on a vegan diet for the past 1 year, I've seen massive increases in my PRs and massive decreases in inflammation, bloating, cholesterol, and blood pressure. My bench is at 365lbs and my deadlift is at 525lbs. Protein doesn't make you stronger at the gym. It's just the building blocks to help grow muscle that you create at the gym. The source of where your muscle is getting that protein doesn't matter, but the health risks of eating a high protein diet and a high animal protein diet has been proven.

All those people out there that think going plant-based and that you can be a bodybuilder and be plant-based are right. There's no scientific proof that we need a certain amount of animal protein in our body to build muscle. In the end lifting weight whether it's body weight or using actual dumbbells or machines is what builds muscle. Our body synthesizes and utilizes plant-based amino acids and proteins way better than protein from animals which can cause all types of inflammation and autoimmune issues. Plus unless you eat super clean sources of meat you are just putting a ton of toxins in your body that then affects your liver and kidneys and blood and lymph. If you are defending the meat and dairy industry then you are addicted not educated.

Oatmeal another good protein source that has healthy fat, fiber, and is cheap. These are all filling and when eaten in combination with green leafy vegetables, that also has protein, it will keep you from feeling hungry and you will meet your protein intake. You can also do soybeans or tofu. Which also are good protein source but I know some may have issues with soy products.
