It was lovely spending a little time in your workshop , listening and watching as you shared your skill and knowledge , thank you for taking the time to do so. It’s amazing to think the technology that’s contributed to the demise of such a beautiful craft, may also help to save and revive it, or at least keep its techniques and secrets safe for those yet to come . I have just bought a couple of old book binding tools which I love , your workshop is just jaw dropping, tool envy “doesn’t come close , the display and quantity of beautiful tools nearly took my breath away ! The seeds of your knowledge have now been cast far and wide, I’m sure many of them will find the right place to flourish and grow 😊Thank you again .

Really helpful video. I learned many things. Did you say “you could do this job with your eyes closed?”only a skilled craftsman of many years experience could ever say something like that. Lining up hand-tooled letters has to be one of the hardest skills to master with eyes very much open! Thank you. John Green sent us your link. I’m glad he did.

Excellent video, master Lloyd! Your explanations are vital! It s the first time i ve heard someone actually saying that you need a thin coating of vaseline after the pastewash and glairing. I ve since learned this, but my first attempts were very frustrating as the leaf kept slipping off :)))
This must also prevent the gold from sticking where it's not wanted, I hope it does anyway, as this has been where I have been stuck so far. Fingers crossed

Some of the ready-made glaire you can buy suggests 24-hours. you so much
Have you received the answers to your questions yet? To make paste wash simply mix some wheat or rice starch into some distilled water. Heat the water first but don't bring to a boil. Let cool to room temperature before use. Add a few teaspoons of rose water for better results. Glaire is just pure egg whites. Nothing too special about it. You can strain the egg whites through a cheesecloth. Add just a splash of vinegar as a preservative. You can also buy powdered egg whites which is pure albumin. I'm not sure his technique, but let dry for 24 hours before tooling.

Greetings, Sky. I don't think Trevor responds to comments on this video. I'm guessing he's just probably very busy. They're called brass hand tools, or brass finishing tools. You can sometimes find them used, but two places where you can purchase them new (my recommendation) is FineCut or Book Bind Designs, both in the U.K. Hope that helps, and happy gold tooling!

Fine Cut in the U.K. makes some excellent brass tools.

If your already using glair what is the benefit of using vaseline as well?
The glare is the “adhesive ‘ the Vaseline is only there to hold the gold in place whilst you tool it.
Also what petrol do you use to remove the gold? Thank you.
The petrol is sold as lighter fuel, which is refined petrol readily available in small tins.
What is your stamp heater called? I’ve been searching everywhere for something like it, but no success.
It is called a finishing stove, they are sometimes available on eBay
