I actually love this design alot. I'd actually prefer if Nintendo put the cart slot behind the screen on the SP to look more like this rather than having a bulging GB cart coming out of the bottom. This looks amazing IMO
I love how the shell for this mod is actually the same type of clear with similar print in letters to the case box the Pocket came with! Certainly I can not build it myself but nonetheless, it is nice to look at.
Just a note on the Giltesa kit, if you plan to use it in a future project. The current pocket kit uses a tp4056, so you should only use it in places where the battery is not near the management IC. Allison did a great job moving the battery away and using a smaller battery to keep ample distance from the tp4056 chip. Giltesa is updating the kit to use the tp5000, which his new Gameboy Color kit uses, but that still has the same issue with overheating when charging.
Needs a battery that is 4x that size to fix that “top heavy feal” and get rid of that wasted empty space. But absolutely beautiful work gotta give Allison her flowers.
This is a truly inspiring mod! I would absolutely watch your take on the build process. But mostly, thank you for always having such unique sides of the hobby covered and putting in the work to showcase them so well.
The only change I would make to the mod would be to push the buttons higher up and have the battery below the button PCB, also shift the power light to the side like an SP or original gameboy. I hope somebody else makes this with a translucent Atomic purple shell, that would look soo sleek!
Super cool and you can tell someone spent a lot of time/effort creating something unique but adding the hinge came at the expense of making a lot of other things about the unit feel like a giant compromise.
This is a pretty fascinating design! I would add one pro to the design is that, while the cartridge isn't quite flush with the console, it's definitely cleaner than using Gameboy games on an official GBA SP; the bottom slot makes those suckers stick out like a sore thumb lol
This is a great mod. The creativity of the modding scene has been blowing up over the last few years and it's awesome. To address one of your cons, the cartridge not sitting flat. I actually think it's better that it doesn't sit flat. With the clear shell, it would be awful for it to get scratched. If you remember the old play it loud Gameboy, most of them you find now have lots of scratches into the plastic from kids sliding the games in and out. I think this is a better protector of the shell. Just my two cents. Keep making killer videos Tito!
You make a good point about the plastic, but I would still rather have unavoidable damage to the shell itself rather than risking damaging/corrupting my cartridges, some of which are worth more than the shell.
@@RandomizationShow Agreed. The cartridge not sitting flat means it's more susceptible to being bumped and the game freezing up. And unless it's a display piece, the shell will get scratched up eventually anyway. So I'd rather have the cartridge sit flat.
We will look back and see that these are the renaissance years for handheld modding. It seems like we always have new and exciting ways to enjoy retro gaming on the go.
I love this mod! Just a thoguht to fix the looseness of the top plate/ screen would be to extend the top lower section of the lid so once it folds over at the 160 degree it would essentially rest on the other side of the bottom top surface... hopefully that makes sense :) Great job!
I always wished the SP had the cart slot on the top for a very specific reason; the Gameboy camera. I wanted the folding functionality of the SP, with the slot on the top so the camera wouldn't be flipped upside down, so this is really nice to see!
I love the hardware modding community, they just do whatever is possible, from the simpler days of modchips to bypass region locking, to making a foldable GB Pocket (idk why, but my leading theory is that since it was possible, it could be made).
It would definitely be cool to see a video of your own build and any possible changes you wanted to make added to it. This is still amazing for a first build though, insanely well thought out.
I would love to see a mod for the pocket that mimicks the horizontal orientation of the original Gameboy advance. Maybe I could do that one day once I start modding and get good at it but for now Im loving these easy tutorials
Thank you for showing this off! Allison did amazing work here, I love this idea. :) I honestly like the idea of the cartridge loading into the top half better, the aesthetic is really fun even if it isn't the most utilitarian choice.
I predict this excellent console design will be further refined over time to be even slimmer with recessed buttons. Maybe even the cartridge slot will be moved to the base just like the GBASP. This is an excellent proof of concept.
You're right, the retro modding community is awesome. Because of your channel and others like RetroRGB and My Life in Gaming, I have revitalized my GameCubes, or are in the process of doing so with HDMI plug and play devices since mine is a DOL-001 (one so far has the mods), the LaserBear Blue Retro controller board and I have yet to install the PicoBoot mod as well as purchasing the new microcontroller-based memory card you featured in the last two or three months. I also have the older GameBoy Advance and I am planning to put some kind of IPS panel, USB C charging with a Li-Ion battery and others into it. The thing holding me back right now is the finances to do all of these as I currently have other priorities. It's always interesting what you show in your retro-renew videos, and I typically see them and watch them. Thanks Tito, for what you do.
They already did make an official flip-open backlit Game Boy that already can play older DMG, Pocket, and CGB game boy games out of the box. It's called the Game Boy Advance SP. The GBA SP can do the exact same thing except this one can't play the GBA games
I like the aesthetics of this but there’s a reason Nintendo did not have the cartridge slot on the top half of their foldables. That’s because you place undue stress on the hinges which eventually will cause them to fail.
“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” Dr Ian Malcolm this mod looks amazing, not gonna try it or get it but still awesome
I would like to see a GBA SP mod like this. But I can think of some tweaks... 1: A recessed headphone jack. 2: Stereo speakers, not mono, twin stereo speakers! 3: A better more modern rechargeable battery! 4: a sleep or Standby mode when you close it, so it functions like the DS and 3DS family of systems. A recessed headphone jack would have a jack that is set to be either under the bottom half, or behind the screen... Something that will make the headphone wire not pinch or bend when you rest the system on your stomach when playing.
It looks awesome but putting the cartridge in the top half is a major design flaw. I would easily buy it if the cartridge slot was in the bottom and also if the console would close properly without leaving a gap.
This is seriously one of the most beautiful gameboy mods ever. But my most anticipated mod is still Thiccboy SP, I've held off on other mods for over a year in hopes that it is completed/sold. I think it has more potential than the slates and minibuilds due to its unique features like a headphone jack, Bluetooth audio, wireless charging and a gigabattery lasting 20-40hrs. I imagine you guys will crush the competition against these other mods when it is finished. Yours is arguably the best that a GBA could possibly be. I remember there were delays due to either missing or replacing the headphone jack component. I think it would still be the best GBA mod of them all without it. This mod is really clever and otherwise well done/designed, but the way the cartridge sits at an angle looks sketchy and I wouldn't be able to use it in good conscience. Some games are worth more than the plastic shell, and if it isn't sitting flush/flat inside the system it is at risk of damaging/corrupting your cartridge.
Great mod! My first handheld and my first "own" system (my brother and I had an Atari 2600 and Sega Genesis) was the Game Boy Pocket. Ice Blue limited edition, still my fave system.
I wonder if the screen/console retaining power a few seconds after switching off is actually an intended feature. If so, it is quite clever - some EZ Flash cartridges save to micro SD. They recommend leaving the console on a few seconds after saving to ensure it completes the write operation for the save, otherwise it can corrupt the save/files on the micro SD. This feature "could" be to mitigate that.
It’s so cool, I think it needs a redesigned on the lower half, thicker bottom to house the cartridge housing would be better. Can’t wait for the mod video, hopefully it’s with a updated redesign.
Ah the Pocket. Fond memories of playing a friends, but never owning myself. It really was a great iteration of GameBoy. This mod makes it even more cool.
I think that if you are going to make a Gameboy Pocket SP just add a way to connect it to your TV and make it a dockable unit so you can play it on a big screen. The one thing that wasn't mentioned is when the battery finishes charging on the Gameboy Pocket SP does the light go out or does it turn green that is something that would help people modding Gameboy Pockets so they know when it is charged.
The Rarest Game Boy of all is the Game Boy LIGHT. Made only in Japan and only sold in mail order, it was a Game Boy Pocket with a light switch that would allow a player to play the Game Boy without any light around.
Not wanting to sounds like a Giltesa fanboy, but his USB-C Li-po charging kit is actually an impressively well thought out set of parts. The kit on Allison's build looks to be one of the v1.1 or V1.2 releases, but Giltesa has since redesigned it to create the V2.0. The V2.0 uses a slightly better charging controller chip, and since the V1.3 it's had a different layout to move the battery connecter to a more convenient location. I've got a V1.2 (plus a 1000mah Li-Po) on a GB Pocket with a few basic mods, and a V2.0 on one that I rebuilt with an IPS screen. It's not a particularly difficult upgrade if you've already got a bit of soldering experience, but it's a little nerve-wracking as it's pretty much a one way mod, so if you botch it you'll be looking for another GBP to get a replacement board from. Both of the pockets in my collection that I've fitted these to went without a hitch, and I've still got a spare v2.0 that I may use in some future upgrades on one of the others.
I'd like understand more about the trade offs for bottom half cartridges. I assume it would be less like a classic gameboy and a lot of work but I would expect it to be more pocketable in the end. The clam shell protects at the cost of making thick in the pocket.
Can't believe this happened. Looks awesome! Thanks for showing this amazing mod. Also, thanks to the sponsor and the community helping this channel keep getting better and better. Blessings for you too Tito. 😎
It kind of escapses practical just in the sense that a Game Boy Advance has a bigger library it can play. I'm not putting down the project by any means, this is a labor of love for a handheld and that's what matters. And the unit itself is a testament to that.
I think this project finally made me realize that a lot of these one of a kind mods are more like engineered sculptures than an actual intended everyday use system more than a novelty, they're playable and usable art
The image retains after turning off is probably because the power wire is wired on the wrong spot. If wired to the middle pin of the power switch it should turn off right away
My dream is a pocket Gameboy Advance. Imagine playing the full Gameboy library with one console that have gb pocket/colors disign meaning every Gb cartridge could sit flush in the console without weirdness. That would be awesome
I love the design having the cartridge slot on the top, the whole thing reminds me of retro futurism, back when film and tv makers and media makers overall would make bulky advanced technologies because that's how we thought what the future would look like and I love bulky technological designs, it also looks like some type of retro punk device, like something you would see a character in some type of mixed retro future anime would use.
I should of said this on my last comment but I really do hope to see you tackle on this mod! I would love to see you build it and see if you can improve on the cons of the device, such as the the game not being flushed to the device and possibly making the top of the hinge more tight so it holds better when you put it on any angle
Off all the systems, I like the Gameboy color the most. I bought a GBA and GBA SP, but I really liked the GBC. I like that GB, GBC, and GBA games are now on switch.
Tito said "shell" a record low amount of times. All jokes aside, this looks amazing, and I think it's a really solid mod. My only real gripe is the hinges seem a bit frail compared to the top load the gameboy holds.
I absolutely love this since it combines my two favorite consoles. I would just put some side lips to better support the cartridge. It appeared to move away from the back of the screen nevertheless amazing work
3:58 There is nothing worse in game consoles than LEDs which are still turned on during the game. I always covered them with black marker, cutted out or added additional resistors to make them darker.
"You were so concerned with whetere or not you could you didn't stop to think if you should" *looks at foldable gb pocket* "This is an exception to the rule..."
I kinda want a gameboy advance sp design with the cartridge slot on the top half, maybe its impossible but i personally think it could be more comfortable and allow more room for modding things such as usbc and a headphone jack
The cartridge sitting on the bottom part with recessed buttons would make it seem like a legitimate Nintendo product, but that's an awesome mod! (I would love have the screen sitting on the same height as the buttons once opened by modifying the hinge location though, like the actual Pocket but that's me being picky^^)
Doing this with a GBC mobo would be the "ultimate" version, imo. Super awesome design still. Only thing I would not be able to deal with is the way the cart sticks out of the back at an angle. That's just me though.
If they keep it up with the parts & build quality and with some minor revisions this could go down as one of the most impressive single person developed/modded consoles.
I feel like, though it would be very convoluted, you could runs wires and mount the cartridge slot to the bottom, and move the battery up to the top section. It would definitely add even more complexity to it, but would make it feel better to hold.
Would be neat if you could separate the cartridge socket and put it on a ribbon cable, then you could make the cartridge housing act as a locking mechanism to slide down and hold it straight when opened 🤔
I think that if I had the skill, I would put the cartridge slot in the bottom half. After all, there's no need for shoulder buttons. Then again, I would probably need purpose-built pcbs and to migrate the necessary chips to it, making for a much more difficult build. But now I'm more interested in a foldable GBC...
Looks like a really cool item! Some important improvements I'd like to see though: 1. Move the cartridge insert to the bottom half to balance the weight, maybe in the same style as the SP. 2. Set in the buttons and d-pad like the SP so it can close flat. It's too bulky otherwise. 3. As you mentioned, flatten the cartridge when inserted. Use some kind of guided slot to accomplish it. 4. Bluetooth connectivity for link play?
I do wonder why she didn't place the cart slot and other boards in the bottom half instead? would of made the top lighter Probably to keep it more to the reminiscent of the Pocket, or signal issues over distance through those flex ribbons. another idea might be the issue placing fingers on the cart might causes, advance carts were a lot smaller afterall

Doing this with a GBC mobo would be the "ultimate" version, imo. Super awesome design still. Only thing I would not be able to deal with is the way the cart sticks out of the back at an angle. That's just me though.
Yeah Id love to watch a build video next then Id feel ready to try and make one
The case more representation of Famicom, if they want to made those case design
If they keep it up with the parts & build quality and with some minor revisions this could go down as one of the most impressive single person developed/modded consoles.
Definitely want to see you build this. I have a spare gb pocket board laying around and I want to try it.
dude dont wait, i dont have a gb pocket board laying around! get modding lad!
I think a more refined V2 is in order. Would be cool if it could lock into the fully open position.
I saw this project on the gameboy reddit so cool to see you do a video on this
Me too
reddit poggies OwO
Grateful to have had the opportunity to look at it 🙏
I loove this dual sound virtual 3d stereo music thing in intro 😍😍
I feel like, though it would be very convoluted, you could runs wires and mount the cartridge slot to the bottom, and move the battery up to the top section. It would definitely add even more complexity to it, but would make it feel better to hold.
Would be neat if you could separate the cartridge socket and put it on a ribbon cable, then you could make the cartridge housing act as a locking mechanism to slide down and hold it straight when opened 🤔
I would love to see this done with the gameboy color!
The best console mod since the Nintoaster.
Seeing this build would be awesome to watch
I think that if I had the skill, I would put the cartridge slot in the bottom half. After all, there's no need for shoulder buttons. Then again, I would probably need purpose-built pcbs and to migrate the necessary chips to it, making for a much more difficult build.
But now I'm more interested in a foldable GBC...
Need to see you build one of these please
Technically the SP is that. It has compatibility with previous Gameboys and all.
It’s quite simple, Macho Nacho uploads, I press Like
Thank you Logi 🙏
I'd love to mod vicariously through you by watching a video of you doing this mod! 🤣
you absolutley HAVE TO try this mod for yourself! it looks amazing!
Looks like a really cool item! Some important improvements I'd like to see though:
Ditch the cart and put in a microsd mod
@Tee Hee Those mods exist for everything.
I do wonder why she didn't place the cart slot and other boards in the bottom half instead? would of made the top lighter
Probably to keep it more to the reminiscent of the Pocket, or signal issues over distance through those flex ribbons. another idea might be the issue placing fingers on the cart might causes, advance carts were a lot smaller afterall
