Dito to that. SWE puts a lot of work into this channel and it shows. Whenever I want info on a new book or story, I can rely on him... both of you. HelloGreedo I didn‘t like in the early days, but he also has come a long way since then. However, SWE is still my favorite SW channel - even above the official one since that one is basically just advertisement. SWE provides you with a nuanced, informed, honest and still generally positive outlook on SW content.
@@gridcoregilry666 You don't know???? Only the best lore guy, he has hundreds of legends videos, hundreds of canon videos, look him up! 'EckhartsLadder' on YT
I didn’t grow up on Star Wars Legends, so Disney canon is my Star Wars. I’ve been enjoying everything that we’ve been getting thus far. Like how The Mandalorian makes both Clone Wars and Rebels so much better.
Yeah Disney Star Wars is more of my Star Wars. By the time I was starting to pay attention to the large mythology of the EU, George sold Star Wars to Disney. So I saw the new canon as a great place to start fresh.
One thing I've really liked about the Disney Canon is that their interpretation of the Empire at its height is much more interesting. The Legends Empire had infinite money, which is why it had an endless supply of superweapons and dreadnoughts, and why the post-Endor period was characterized by years of battle with well-equipped warlords who were fairly strong (at least in their own territories). This was fine and made for an interesting post-Endor timeline, but it made the Empire actually during the Rebellion a little boring. The Canon Empire does not have its infinite money cheat on, and Canon material has pretty consistently shown it to be slowly collapsing under its own weight for many years before Endor. While plenty of people take legitimate issue with the one-year timetable to Jakku, the Canon has done a good job of showing the Empire to be struggling for several years before Endor (which, in Legends, was really more of the start of the Empire's collapse rather than a climax). The situation is already a bit out of hand in the Rebels show, especially by the end, where the Empire had to sacrifice all of its past investments in Lothal because it was stretched too thin to try and retake it. The Death Star is shown to have consumed huge amounts of resources better spent elsewhere, and the Empire's grip has slipped enough that I can believe that they feel that they need a Death Star. In the post-Yavin content, it is clear that building the Death Star II on rush is costing the Empire everything it has (as shown when Vader has to ask the Hutts for resources) and makes losing it a very serious blow (while the Legends Empire kind of felt like neither Death Star's loss was a very serious blow to their capabilities, and only the loss of Palpatine did any real damage). The Mid Rim Offensive/Retreat was an eventual Imperial victory, but it cost them a lot of time and resources at the same time they are pouring every cent they have into the Death Star II. All of this adds up to the post-Endor collapse, when, finally faced with a power that even slightly rivals it, the exhausted Empire implodes. That was kind of a ramble, but my point is that I find this resource-constricted Empire that is slowly bleeding to death because it can never learn when enough is enough to be more interesting than Legends's relatively monolithic pre-Endor Empire. The Canon Empire also seems to have a lot more infighting and poor leadership before Palpatine's death, and while some people can rightfully complain about that, I think it is a logical and realistic depiction of a military dictatorship, a form of government where loyalty is always promoted before competency. My main point is that the Canon Empire throughout Phase I has been fairly cohesive and interesting to me in a way that I never found the Legends pre-Endor Empire to be.
I know right I said the same thing remember when the first 10 years of Star Wars where when Han and Chewbacca landed on earth and chewy became big foot and Darth Vader played with tiny action figures of the characters and the Ewok show witch was confusing with the force
Too bad they didn't make something worthwhile in the last 5 years apart from the mandalorian ,rogue one and the new thrawn trilogy . Quality over quantity
What I love about him is that he actually sounds like someone who enjoys spending so much time with Star Wars. There are so many star wars youtubers where I can't help but wonder, why on earth they are doing this? They sound so miserable spending so much time on a franchise.
Artemisia you know what I love more Star Wars is a mythology witch means you can make your own canon too I like to make my own too even if it’s just for fun
If we get more and more people like Charles Soule, Claudia Grey and Dave Filoni making stuff and most, if not, all of legends is canonised in some form at some point alongside an equal amount of new stuff then we'll get some really great stories and can then be compared to legends. When you think about it it's pretty obvious George would have wiped the EU himself if he had held onto his company. Not just because it was never canon to him but because he would have wanted to make room for his ST and I think he would have established the story group with the same people to oversee it all. And thank you Alex and Mollie for being rational and the voice of reason alongside HelloGreedo.
I've said for years that the old EU would've gotten "decanonized" no matter who owned the franchise moving forward. After 20+ years it had just grown too crowded and convoluted to try to keep track of for new stories, and would have been unavoidably contradicted by any new films. Also, it bugs me how so many fans say Disney "destroyed"/"erased"/"deleted" the old EU as if they literally wiped it from the internet and aren't still selling all the old content just with "Legends" slapped on the front.
I mean, even TCW was gradually doing that. Season 6 for instance was in production prior to the acquisition and Dave Filoni said it was George who requested that Korriban be called Moraband, there have been episodes that have featured old EU content that changed things like the Tals and really just so much more.
I was always overwhelmed growing up with all of the extra content outside the movies where I could expand my fandom. So when they hit the reset button, I was super pumped. I've been reading just the books and watching all the tv shows and have just loved it!
Lightsaber colors in the trailers don't always stay the same once the actual content is released. The Clone Wars season 7 trailer shows Ahsoka using two blue lightsabers but that doesn't mean that's what we'll see. Especially if they're trying to avoid spoilers. Sometimes something as simple as lightsaber colors could give too much away, and they'd want to change them for the pre-release marketing material. (Not that I'm suggesting that's the case with Ahsoka's lightsabers, per se. But it is something that they do.) 👍
Thank you very much for another great video series. I appreciate your calm and balanced demeanor when talking about this stuff. You don't get too nerdy excited over what you like and you don't yell and scream about what doesn't quite land with you. Thank you (and Mollie too) for being a part of my daily "Star Wars" adventure in life.
Finally someone with a brain who doesn't hate everything and realized Disney is only into Star Wars 5-7 years total. It will get better. So far the Canon has been pretty good. I've read and watched it all.
I like how you insinuate that anyone who doesn't like what they've done in these 5-7 years doesn't have a brain. Maybe people just like different things. Though, to be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Star Wars since Disney took over.
@@bigtime8806 not saying that at all. It's just refreshing to see someone who's not bitching on UA-cam videos about everything and realizing Rome wasn't built in a day. I have plenty of criticisms toward Disney and the Star wars movies they have done but the fans are ridiculous about it.
@@Jedi_Spartan I liked the "legends" stuff before it became legends. I grew up on the original trilogy and those will always be my favorites. I was in high school when the prequels came out. Didn't like them at all then but they have grown on me. Every film has good and bad in it.
Great point about mythology. I love Greek mythology and exactly like you said it's not one cohesive story. The two big stories of The Iliad and The Odyssey are pretty much one unit, but throw in The Anead and stories from Lucian and everything else and it's just a bunch of cool epic stories and myths. We all love Star Wars but *whisper voice* 'star wars isn't real life'.
Nice mention of some of the contradictions in the Disney canon but you also forgot to mention the stuff about Snoke e.g. Palpatine in The Last Jedi novel sensing his presence, the surviving imperials being guided by him via his attendants and him witnessing the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire according to The Force Awakens novelization even though the beginning of The Rise of Skywalker revealed that Supreme Leader Snoke is an artificial being created by Palpatine to rule the First Order from behind the scenes and to test Kylo Ren.
It is so nice to watch a video where someone talks calmly about Star Wars without going into what *expletive* Idiots Disney are and *expletives* Is ruined and everything is *expletive* lol. You give me hope for the Lightside of the UA-cam lol
I genuinely adore the sequel trilogy despite its flaws. I find the characters so charming and I really loved Leia’s stubborn refusal to give up despite set back after set back.
I just love how you are a fan that loves everything, and not like those who keep saying that the franchise is dead or wathever. Thank to you and molly! This is the way.
This is great. And I have to say that you guys had added to my enjoyment of the new cannon. Every time I watch a new movie, show or read a comic or book I can’t wait to hear what you guys also think. Keep up the great work Alex and Mollie 👍🏻
Hey, really enjoy your channel, I appreciate how much star wars canon you keep up with, I wish I had the time to read all the comics and novels but your channel has helped me keep up. Thank You! Keep up Great work! Excited for future Star Wars stories, etc..
The Cobb Vanth-Boba Fett thing is a example about a potential contradiction. The aftermath interludes were a big thing and specifically the one with the sheriff of Freetown
I’m a lifelong fan, grew up on the originals on VHS, the EU and everything else. I think phase one of Disney Star Wars was pretty good. I loved most of it and am able to shrug off the stuff I didn’t love. Looking forward to the future of Star Wars! Good video series, glad to see a rational SW youtuber.
Thank you for your objectivity... You have become a guideline for hundred of fans and I believe is better to enjoy the whole "mitology" rather than focusing in the things that do not go as we expected.... Keep up the good work and saludos from Mexico.
Your rational analysis is why I enjoy your channel more than any others. I also tend to line up with your thinking, which helps a lot. The only canon content I can say i dislike is TRoS. While other pieces have left me with mixed feelings or done something poorly, I can usually find enough positives to outweigh or balance it. Overall, I think most of the canon content produced has been proportionately better than legends, though I would love to see the best pieces of legends brought over wholesale into canon (Kotor 2 in particular)
"Our collective emotional baggage surrounding characters and heroes that we have known and loved for over 40 years" And THAT is precisely why the fandom is divided.....like you I can shrug it off and just enjoy it. Just way too many cannot get over that "collective emotional baggage" and really need too. Excellent video and I think I pretty much agree 100%
Ewok Adventure and Ewoks II: The Battle for Endor are officially Legends, meaning there is always a place in my heart for those stories. I'll never forget ya, Teek!
All of the side content has kinda overshadowed the films in my opinion. The Force Awakens and Kylo Ren as a character has been the one thing in the movies that I’ve really latched on to. But when I look back at my favorite stuff from phase 1, Rebels, Soules Vader, Lando mini, and Thrawn come to mind and nothing from the movies really did.
I enjoyed this series of videos. Thank you, Alex. Just as you can't wait for "Phase 2" I can't wait for your next video. Please keep up the excellent job you and Mollie have been doing.
Honestly, we may once in a while disagree on stuff (such as our opinions on the last two movies), but honestly, thank you so much for this channel! I have learned so much and gotten to explore so much Star Wars content thanks to this channel. I don't have all the money or time to read the books and comics (college life and being an officer of 3 organizations at YSU is a thing along with classes), so your channel and the reviews you make and the q&a's and other videos are so helpful and a lot of fun. I'll be honest, I don't watch Resistance (i'm a Jedi sheep who likes his Jedi and lightsabers, although The Mandilorian is 110% an exception to that), but I still keep up with it thanks to your reviews. Thanks to this channel, I've been able to answer other people's questions about Star Wars content (Idk how many times I've had to type, "Chewie got his medal in the canon comics" on Facebook the past few weeks), but I truly look forward to new videos everyday. Thank you Alex and Molly and may the Force be with you!
The Force Awakens resurrected Star Wars movie fan in me. but Rogue One gave me the push to deep dive into another content like comics and books and eventually I found your channel. I'm far from reading all of new canon, but most of what I've read or saw was really good, including Charles Soule comics and Dooku Jedi Lost. So thank you for your insight and recommendations all these years, and hoping for many more in the future!
You are truly a blessing I am a canon Junkie as well and feel I you and Star Wars theory are the only dependable sources on UA-cam when it come to this mythology thank you again
I personally would have preferred if they would have just declared everything Legends as "B-Canon" (canon until proven otherwise (in this case by material published post-Disney take over)). Would have propably lessened the fandoms... strong reaction as well... But I do have to admit that it can be interesting to see them reintroducing characters and things from Legends back into canon opening up potential for new stories (with Thrawn of course being the biggest one).
Great video Alex 🙂 I would say the first 5 years were good for Star Wars, (movie’s wise) but then you have to do read comics or books in order to have a good movie. Like because my family and many others didn’t read comics or books before this movie, the movie brought more up more questions than answers to the other questions before.
The lightsaber color issue can simply be chalked up to a slight oversight in the VFX department. And since it was only in a trailer (not technically canon yet), there's a possibility for corrections...
I think the good outweighs the bad in this issue but I personally feel the whole point of the story group was to prevent errors from happening. We were promised this when the EU was shelved; some things are minor but others really have me puzzled.
Excellent series of videos, and I agree that I'm incredibly excited for what comes next. I haven't quite read everything (I wait the 6 months for comics to be released on Marvel Unlimited and there's a couple of books I haven't read yet), but I've read, watched, and played almost everything released in the last 5 years, and I've really enjoyed it. Legends will always have a special place in my heart, and I know that I will revisit my favorite Legend stories many times in the years to come, but new canon has been at it's best when it's forging its own distinct path and giving us stories that we've never quite seen before. As we leave behind the Skywalker Saga, I'm hoping that trend continues even more, giving us more distinct and unique stories to enjoy.
I love what Disney is doing with Star Wars and that they should keep up with it. Here’s my favourite stories of the new canon: Favourite Movie : Rogue One Favourite tv show : Rebels (I love clone wars season 7 but it’s weird to compare an entire series to 12 episodes) Favourite video game : Jedi Fallen Order Favourite comic : Darth maul comic 2017 Favourite book : Ahsoka
The new canon resparked my love for this series, which had faded between 2005 and 2014. I was really skeptical at first, I didn't like the idea of scrapping great stories like the Jedi Knight series, changing the origins of the Rebellion from The Force Unleashed's story and the like. Even at first, I didn't hate Rebels but I also didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I do now (it's my favorite Star Wars story outside of the movies). However, going forward, I've come to love the canon storyline WAY more than the Legends storyline. Its story is far more cohesive, far more in line with the original spirit of Star Wars as George himself established. I may be sick of the way the new canon seems to focus on the bland and uninteresting Mandalorians (even the show has been super average, IMO), but overall, the new canon stuff has taken my love for Star Wars and turned it into something far beyond any love I've ever had for an entertainment franchise. I love both canon and Legends. Legends is far more expansive and it's what I grew up on, so I love it, but canon has the better writing and comes a lot closer to what George Lucas originally intended for this series. The Rise of Skywalker is pretty much my favorite movie of all time knowing what they're planning in the future fills me with lots of hope that Star Wars will continue to grow into something greater than it already is.
2:34 Except in disney cannon your lightsaber crystal color is a certain color when made due to the force users personality (unless she took/got the lightsaber from someone else) Also i feel like the fact that "the story contradictions aren't worse than legends" isn't good enough, the reason i have used to somewhat accept the great disney purge was that they might want to uprethold story continuity, and remove some of the more OP stuff in legends, which i know lot of people didn't like (although i don't personally mind it, well, maybe except the sun crusher) those two excuses can no longer be used
@@calmmentalrelaxation8417 Also it wouldn't be surprising if Anakin, being a tinkerer, might've secretly done something to them to make it a more special gift.
No one talks about the fact that if a super weapon exists once, it would be idiotic to think that the entire galaxy would just forget about planet killing tech and resort to weaker plans. Lol. Just saying. It makes sense for the end goal to be a fleet of Star Destroyers to be kitted with Death Star tech.
@@TheWhills Except this time a fleet of planet killers was created on a single planet (from smuggling in resources according to disney) and no one in the whole galaxy noticed, despite the fact that it would require thousands, if not millions of weapons smugglers. Also going from a 120 km wide sphere outfitted with a superlaser, to a 2 km long star destroyer with almost that same superlaser power, in around 4 centuries. That's the equivalent of having developed a nuclear bullet in the 1980s, with an explosive power slightly lower than the bombs used on hiroshima and nagasaki.
We've mainly gotten Brittish, American, Indian, & Chinese names for characters in Star Wars. We could use some Greek, Latin, French, Russian, Spanish, Native American, Aborigini, Japanese, German, Scandinavian, Portuguese, Canadian, Native South American, & African names.
I'm with you about preference with Legends and Canon. I also grew up with several Legends material like Genndy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars and The Force Unleashed. But I also come to like some of the new Canon material like the books (Personal favorites are Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray and Dooku: Jedi Lost by Cavan Scott), Jedi: Fallen Order, Dave Filoni's Clone Wars and The Mandalorian. I thought the sequel trilogy was enjoyable but above average for me. I'm excited about what the future of "Phase Two" of Star Wars would have in store.
Stepping away from the Skywalker era leaves them open to bring more stuff back from legends that is less edited. KoTor and Bane and the story of the ancient Sith/Republic wars can be brought back without being ruined
James Williams yeah. At the end of the day it really doesn’t matter. The events are more or less the same, just take place differently. Like the Mandalorian war taking place around the time of Darth Bane.
Pls breakdown the fact that in the PS1 phantom menace game, there is a point where Jar Jar is crossing a bridge in Naboo, and an AAT battle tank shoots a missle at Jar Jar, the bridge is destroyed and Jar Jar plummets to his death and exclaims “ OUCH TIME”. I don’t know what I want you to break down about this but I just need to know why it exists. And trust me it does.
Imo there has been some misses but overall I’m loving the new canon and the content being made! It has revived my love for Star Wars, because SW was nonexistent for me before 2015.
Thank you for your Chanel Alex! It’s great to keep up with Star Wars with you and Molly. It’s great to hear someone who has invested in everything that was released-say it’s OK to have contradictions! I’ve been really hard on the contradictions-as if these aren’t still just people who can make mistakes like any of us. Looking back, it’s been a great time to be a Star Wars fan. I feel like we’ve gotten more good then bad over all . However, the bad (for me), has been in the medium that gets the most attention-the films. In the future, I’d like to see the story group have more to do with the on screen stuff! I want actors to be briefed on back stories, I want representation for the story group on every set. I want them to doctor all the scripts. They should literally be the #2 most important people in Lucasfilm. Also, I want Drew Karpyshyn to get a book trilogy in new canon. Doesn’t have to be a bane thing-I just miss his voice. I’m glad you haven’t burnt out on Star Wars. I love your takes, theories, recommendations, and speculation! You’re among the best in modern day UA-cam-the best SW Schmoedown champion!
I've always loved star wars but it wasn't until the reboot that I really dived into the extended universe. I had read a book or two before but legends felt so massive that I felt like I couldn't keep up with all of it. Then the reboot happened and I could, for the first time, learned about the universe while everyone else was. If it wasn't for the reboot, I wouldn't have ever watched the Clone Wars, which I had seen the movie and first few episodes and didn't like. "Anakin having an apprentice? Why was this never mentioned before?" But with a new canon can promises of greater connectivity, instead of extended universe content trying to patch things up in the wake of the prequels. Heck without canon, I wouldn't have read the Thrawn Trilogy, seeing for myself why it was so beloved by fans. I know people have problems with the new canon but I'll be forever greatful for it because it deepened my connection with star wars beyond the films and a few games. Now I read most of the new canon stuff and also a lot of the stuff that came before. I'm excited to see where the universe goes next, even if TRoS left a bad taste in my mouth
When following my sports team, during good times and bad, during fun and controversy, I always fall back on our simple, traditional cheer: Go Hawks I try to apply the same to Star Wars: May the Force be with you I love Star Wars under the current regime at Lucasfilm. I love the sequels and rogue one, I am invested in the canon and I have a mostly great time discussing the saga online. But there’s always stuff I don’t like, and there’s legitimate reasons for people to disagree with me What I’ve learned: it’s never be perfect, but it’s never dead. Hang in there and love the stuff you love. May the Force be with you. Always.
Alex maybe you should make a video listing as many contradictions as you can in legends and canon. For example, the multiple deaths of Even Piell or the completely different appearances of kashyyyk in the han solo legends book Rebel Dawn versus Revenge of the Sith
I can definitely understand what you mean about contradictions in certain parts of the new canon. But I seriously can’t wait for the clone wars season 7 on Disney+! It’s gonna be epic but I’m really annoyed it it’s only gonna one new episode a week! I seriously wish we could binge watch all 12 episodes at once. But funny enough the last episode is gonna air on May the 4th. Coincidence right? I have a feeling the show might end with ahsoka saying to Rex “may the force be with you.” That would be an epic ending! I think at least.
I liked this video series Alex! And I’m with you. I like both Canon and Legends with stories in the former being the world to me and Phase 1 of SW Disney being like Phase 1 of the MCU. I’m only bummed that I’ll have to wait five years for your Phase 2 review.
So I was a big fan of the Expanded Universe at the time of its cancelled and still am currently. I expected when Disney purchased Lucasfilm that they wouldn’t follow the EU with Episodes 7-9, there’s was just too much to explain to audiences. But I was DEEPLY disappointed that they chose to discontinue the EU entirely. There was no reason to make the new books comics and games do a continuity reset. The new canon stories haven’t been bad, but they’ve not been nearly as good as the EU was on average. And the continuity has been just as problematic as has been the weird concepts, five years in and almost all of the “problematic” concepts such as the Emperor coming back have been repeated in canon. In my opinion, Lucasfilm should’ve declared that the new movies and tv shows would ignore the EU but kept the books expanding on that timeline. This would have given maximum creative freedom to the shows and movies and allowed the hardcore fans to still enjoy new EU stories.
Thing is? It had to be done to make way for the new stories and I'm not saying that to try and discredit the experiences or the emotions surrounding the old EU but really the EU at a certain point became just way too massive to keep track of and hit a point where it was very unapproachable to new fans. You look around you'll see a lot of people who tried to get into the EU being stumped because they don't know where to even start with it. Getting rid of the EU I'd say is like when DC initially rebooted their universe with Crisis on Infinite Earths. Things got too big to maintain and it became very difficult to approach new audiences so the reset button needed to be hit and now what's interesting is with that? You hear about people who are checking out the new books but they're also willing to take a look at Legends at the very least.
Aspiring Creator It absolutely did not “have to be done to make room for the new stories” as far as the books comics and games go. They actually had to cancel a number of projects they were working on in order to come up with new ones that couldn’t take advantage of the rich universe the EU created. The new stories are mostly retreads of old ideas from the EU. As far as intimidating new readers, while some of that happened in the EU, I got into it in 2010, and I really didn’t have a problem because as long as you didn’t start in the middle of a series or anything the stories made sense on their own. What intimidates new readers is trying to figure out what books, comics, and games are actually canon and which ones aren’t. That has hurt new readers waaaay more than the EU being big ever could. And no offense to comic fans, but that’s a huge part of why that industry struggles so much, because every few years they throw out all of the stories people love and then they stop caring. They lost plenty of fans by caning the EU, easily more than they gained by making that move.
@@griffinshearer8265 In that case you are the exception rather than the rule because really there are still quite a few people I can recall who wanted to possibly look into Legends, they saw the massive amount of books, comics and more and they decided "On second thought, I'm good.". The thing is just because you're the exception to something doesn't mean that applies to every single person on this planet, especially since there are several Star Wars fans out there who only care about the movies and will only care about the movies. Same with the average moviegoer who most likely is not gonna know who someone like Jacen Solo is nor are they gonna care and this is not me trying to be dismissive, it's still totally okay to be disappointed they got rid of the EU. And the thing is just looking over all the history that has led up to that point? I'm of the opinion that this was going to happen regardless. I mean the EU was already being contradicted and basically rewritten with TCW, George already stated at many points that to him, those stories aren't really canon and after learning about his plans for what his sequel trilogy would've been sounds to me like regardless years of stories would've had to be chucked into a bin albeit maybe not as much but it still would've basically happened because the idea of having to look through years worth of comics, novels and whatever in order to ensure that it's all consistent is kind of ludicrous and really even if this move lost fans, it doesn't matter because Star Wars doesn't exist in a vacuum where it serves only the purpose of appeasing hardcore fans who consume every piece of content, it has to pick up new people and to tell new audiences "Hey so in order to understand literally anything that happens in this new trilogy, you have to consume all these books and comics, they should bring you up to speed." is just not good. I mean even older multimedia projects undertaken by Star Wars like Shadows of the Empire didn't require that kind of thing. Plus it's very easy to tell, you see the Legends banner and instantly you know "Okay, that book is non-canon." and it's easy to explain to people that everything made before the Disney buyout is non-canon.
Aspiring Creator I’d advise you to read my original comment again. I specifically said I agreed with having the movies and shows not be beholden to the EU because as you said, it would’ve been difficult to convey all the stuff that happened in the EU that was super important. I already agreed about that. But that doesn’t change the fact that the books, comics and games that are in the canon have been creatively far worse due to the reboot. Clearly you didn’t keep up the the EU, and that’s all well and good, it certainly isn’t for everyone, but arguing for its cancellation without having read any of it and understanding it shows a lot of ignorance on your part. I’d invite you to educate yourself on what was really happening in the EU before it was cancelled, before further arguing for its cancellation when you don’t really know what you’re arguing.
@@griffinshearer8265 I've read some stuff in the EU. I've read the entire Dark Empire trilogy, I've consumed the Thrawn trilogy, I read Death Troopers and Red Harvest, I've played KOTOR, I've looked into EU history although my memory now is fuzzy and the thing is, I'm not trying to argue for its cancellation nor am I trying to invalidate feelings about the decanonization. It's sad to be sure and really it's perfectly okay to be upset about it. But setting opinions aside at the end of the day, I tried to look at this from multiple perspectives and ultimately I just see this as being a necessary evil and I mean a necessary EVIL because of course this meant books and comics got cancelled and that some stories have been left unresolved and incomplete and it's difficult to think of the idea that what you've dedicated yourself to for so long is now gone and it's a shame the new content isn't appealing to you. At the end of the day though? I'm a glass half-full kind of person and I'm really just excited we're getting more Star Wars and as much as it sucks to see the EU decanonized? What is cool is seeing plenty of people going and checking out novels both old and new.
I think legends has many great moments. When they decided to make it legends it was definitely a big risk. Bigger than TLJ. As much as I love Jedi Outcast and stuff, I can’t help but feel that this new clean slate is great for younger creators, especially for those who grew up with the prequels. There’s so many great stories that have yet to be told and now with Disney to support it, Star Wars should have a great long life.
Hey Alex, what are your thoughts on the rumours that project luminous takes place in 432 BBY? I think it's great Star Wars is branching out the timeline and distancing itself from the Skywalker saga, as you said. However, this means Yoda will likely play a role in the story, so unfortunately this may means it's still tied to the familiar at least in some capacity.
Evan Crites they have mentioned their favorites many many many many many many many many many many times in Q and As on Saturday. Then people forget what they said, ask them again, they they answer it again.
Can we clear something up. Prior to the Disney purchase, did George ever accept all the books and material as part of his Canon story line? My recollection is that he did not. I think us calling the Post Disney time as "New Canon" is a misnomer . Its just Canon. And all that stuff before was always Legends. If I am wrong, can some one tell me what was accepted as part of the Canon line and what was not? And not what you wanted to be part of Canon, but what Lucas accepted as Canon.
He never did. He has given praise for certain books and comics and of course when he was more involved with his own company stories had to get his approval and he occasionally would do things like I believe for one book he wrote a foreword but otherwise, he has made it clear he has never considered the old EU to be a part of his storyline. He said it himself in one interview, to him, the story of Star Wars is about the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and the fall of Darth Vader, it ends when he overthrows the Emperor, the Emperor doesn't get cloned nor does Luke get married.
As for phase I I believe they did a good job at comics like the Darth Vader (2017) series and did an amazing job at the first live action series, this is the way. Unfortunately I can't say the same about the movies, the only ones that were okay to me were the spinoffs (Rouge One did better than Solo) Videogames are also 50-50 to me because most of them have been dissapointing when it comes to storytelling, microtransactions and difficulty to acquire special abilities, characters, etc. (I can only exclude Jedi: Fallen Order from this particular comment) What I disliked the most was the contradiction between movies & novels, it never felt worth reading the novels because the movies didn't show anything related to them or they showed a small fragment. That is my opinion about Star Wars "Phase One." I've spoken.
I think that you are a little overly generous to Disney here. I agree with examples that you provide eg. Colour of lightsabers are important to some but not to most eg. Rey's yellow would not mean much to many but has a significant meaning to hard core SW fans. To me the biggest issue is when the new canon directly goes against the other films and they either ignore it or provide a flippant comment about it. That is why I dislike the sequels so much.
Tbh after Return of The Jedi I don't really like where the story goes in the new canon, but those movies where all right but didn't make much sense storywise (very similar to the Originals). But then again, you can say those stories won't have repercussions on other material since it takes place after them.
I grew up on all of the SW EU “Legends” content. I was a bit upset when it was tossed aside and made non-canon. I spent years investing in these characters and stories. I understand why Disney made that choice, but I didn’t like it lol. That being said, I’m a Star Wars nut, so I’m going to consume anything they put out from my favorite franchise and be happy that it even exists. I agree with most of your points and opinions...except I really liked Rose of Skywalker. Keep up the good work with this channel!
Going into phase 2, would you want the new canon to tell new stories (or change the legend versions) of characters like Revan and Bane? Or would you rather them tell new stories of completely new characters we’ve never heard of?
I'm really confused by poes new origin in the rise of skywalker. How does a spice runner become a new Republic pilot and then leave for the resistance whilst also leaving being a spice runner to join the resistance at the same time.
The Visual Dictionary says that Poe ran away from home when he was 15, as he was still coping with his mother's death and wasn't in the best of terms with his father. He soon met the Spice Runners of Kijimi, who would've killed him had he not proven to be an excellent pilot. After 5 years with the Spice Runners, he returned home and joined the New Republic Navy to follow a straighter path.
Overall I've enjoyed all of the storytelling in the past five years. My only real criticism is that the films rely on the books, comics, and video games to contextualize what's going on. I know many avid Star Wars film fans who have a tough time explaining the dynamic of the New Republic, The Resistance, the First Order, and how their cold war came to a head with THE FORCE AWAKENS. just as one example. Too often other authors have to pick up the slack of the films. It's still good storytelling, but it's not a good sign when I have to be the lore master post film screenings and be the one to answer the many questions the movies leave unanswered.
It'd be cool video to see in the future 33 year comparsion of EU verses 33 years of Disney canon. Because I think true fans will find that Disney making a albeit flawed cohesive structured universe is more Incredible than we've seen George Lucas do alone. He never regarded the EU as canon for himself. But Disney is grandfathering in George Lucas' films and EU material and making original material. That makes us really spoiled as Star Wars fans. Sure somethings that have changed I'll miss dearly. But in retrospect I love how the EU is still available to find and look back on while I can look forward to what Disney will bring inspired of George Lucas' films that gave us an incredible galaxy, far far away. . . .
Poe was a spice runner in his teens after running away from home. _Before_ he joined the New Republic. Pablo pretty much saved us from a massive contradiction right there if JJ didn't establish that when making the film and just couldn't be bothered to include that.
It says that Poe ran away from home when he was 15, as he was still coping with his mother's death and wasn't in the best of terms with his father. After Kathleen Kennedy, I really want Dave Filloni to be the next prez of Lucasfilm. Only if he can still work in shows and movies as a director. If he can’t, then Pablo Hidalgo 👍
Books: A- haven’t read all of them but enjoyed those that I did. Only negative is the lack of series. Series: A- Mandalorian and Rebels were great, Resistance not so much Games: C+ Too few and the disaster with BF2. The saving grace is Fallen Order. Movies: C While I liked everything but TROS the bad ending ruins the sequel trilogy for me. Comics: A Enjoyed Aphra and the Vader ones. All in all a good start. If they get bolder with new areas to explore and more games and better coordinated movies Phase 2 can be truly epic :)

the best channel of all Star Wars, I unsubbed from all others except HelloGreedo
Dito to that. SWE puts a lot of work into this channel and it shows. Whenever I want info on a new book or story, I can rely on him... both of you.
HelloGreedo I didn‘t like in the early days, but he also has come a long way since then. SWE provides you with a nuanced, informed, honest and still generally positive outlook on SW content.

How dare you present a rational well-rounded analysis of cannon. This is the internet. Pick one side and defend it like a rabid dog!
My main point is that the Canon Empire throughout Phase I has been fairly cohesive and interesting to me in a way that I never found the Legends pre-Endor Empire to be.
they were transferring their infinite money to exegol apparently haha
Can you just imagine, this is only five years while legends had what, 30 years!!! New canon has a lot to love up to and I can't wait.
I know right I said the same thing remember when the first 10 years of Star Wars where when Han and Chewbacca landed on earth and chewy became big foot and Darth Vader played with tiny action figures of the characters and the Ewok show witch was confusing with the force

I love Star Wars explain to me he is one of the few fair Star Wars fans who doesn’t let his nostalgia get in the way of a honest and fair argument
And Star Wars Theory.
@@dlein93 Exactly
I mean, even TCW was gradually doing that. Season 6 for instance was in production prior to the acquisition and Dave Filoni said it was George who requested that Korriban be called Moraband, there have been episodes that have featured old EU content that changed things like the Tals and really just so much more.

But it is something that they do.) 👍
Very true, just like in afroment MCU- Infinity War trailer for example.
TWSTF 8 you are right. They are totally red. What a twist.
Thank you very much for another great video series. I appreciate your calm and balanced demeanor when talking about this stuff.
It's like the Prequel era in terms of content, a lot of the expanded content is better than most of the films.
I hate fans that don’t know shit
I like how you insinuate that anyone who doesn't like what they've done in these 5-7 years doesn't have a brain. Maybe people just like different things. Though, to be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Star Wars since Disney took over.
@@bigtime8806 not saying that at all. It's just refreshing to see someone who's not bitching on UA-cam videos about everything and realizing Rome wasn't built in a day. I have plenty of criticisms toward Disney and the Star wars movies they have done but the fans are ridiculous about it.

This was a well done retrospective over the week on the various media of Star Wars. Excellent job!
To be fair the Aeniad was Roman propaganda to help justify their conquest of Greece.

"Our collective emotional baggage surrounding characters and heroes that we have known and loved for over 40 years"
And THAT is precisely why the fandom is divided.....like you I can shrug it off and just enjoy it. Just way too many cannot get over that "collective emotional baggage" and really need too.
Excellent video and I think I pretty much agree 100%
I have really enjoyed this series of videos that took a look back! I think it is important to look back on all the stuff we got, to appreciate it.
Best Star Wars UA-camr. Thanks for the great job
Ewok Adventure and Ewoks II: The Battle for Endor are officially Legends, meaning there is always a place in my heart for those stories. I'll never forget ya, Teek!
My favorite part of the new canon is Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
and Rogue One!
Great video series! Was fun to wake up to the videos every morning!
I’m so hyped for The High Republic era!!! Such a cool name. Gave me chills
true. But I really hope it will have too much of the CGI-asthetic of the prequels....
Why the Legends vs Canon question in the first place? Can't people just see the value in both instead debating which is better?
No you gotta pick a side and defend it with your life :P
I am grateful for all the new Star Wars content that we got in the last 5 years👍🏼👏🏼👍🏼👏🏼🙂✌🏼
I’m so glad you did this series. Thanks!
Wish you’d break things down even more, tbh.
Here’s my favourite stories of the new canon:
Favourite Movie : Rogue One
Favourite tv show : Rebels (I love clone wars season 7 but it’s weird to compare an entire series to 12 episodes)
Favourite video game : Jedi Fallen Order
Favourite comic : Darth maul comic 2017
Favourite book : Ahsoka
This was a great recap series. Thank you for this and for all your videos. Well done.
2:34 Except in disney cannon your lightsaber crystal color is a certain color when made due to the force users personality (unless she took/got the lightsaber from someone else)
Also i feel like the fact that "the story contradictions aren't worse than legends" isn't good enough, the reason i have used to somewhat accept the great disney purge was that they might want to uprethold story continuity, and remove some of the more OP stuff in legends, which i know lot of people didn't like (although i don't personally mind it, well, maybe except the sun crusher)
those two excuses can no longer be used

Stepping away from the Skywalker era leaves them open to bring more stuff back from legends that is less edited. KoTor and Bane and the story of the ancient Sith/Republic wars can be brought back without being ruined

@@BlindJedi exactly, and in reality, timeline position isn't that important when the events and the preexisting stories are already really good

Thank you for your Chanel Alex! It’s great to keep up with Star Wars with you and Molly. It’s great to hear someone who has invested in everything that was released-say it’s OK to have contradictions!

But there’s always stuff I don’t like, and there’s legitimate reasons for people to disagree with me
What I’ve learned: it’s never be perfect, but it’s never dead.
I don’t care what any one says, I love the new canon because it feels really connected. Which is a reason why I don’t like TROS
Imagine how good ROS would have been if JJ had ever talked to Story Group.
Who are your top 5 Star Wars authors (both Alex and Molly) and how many of them are on Project Luminous?
His favourite comic writer is Charles Soule. And one of his favourite book authors is Claudia Gray.
Evan Crites all of the ones on project luminous are their favorites.
Tiber, I know they are both fans of Soule and Grey, but I don’t remember them mentioning their top 5
Blind Jedi, thanks.
Your t-shirt's drawing is fading.
THANK YOU! ABSOLUTELY GREAT LINE OF THOUGHT!
As for phase I I believe they did a good job at comics like the Darth Vader (2017) series and did an amazing job at the first live action series, this is the way.
Unfortunately I can't say the same about the movies, the only ones that were okay to me were the spinoffs (Rouge One did better than Solo)
Videogames are also 50-50 to me because most of them have been dissapointing when it comes to storytelling, microtransactions and difficulty to acquire special abilities, characters, etc. (I can only exclude Jedi: Fallen Order from this particular comment)
What I disliked the most was the contradiction between movies & novels, it never felt worth reading the novels because the movies didn't show anything related to them or they showed a small fragment.
Thanks, Alex! 🌌
Tbh after Return of The Jedi I don't really like where the story goes in the new canon, but those movies where all right but didn't make much sense storywise (very similar to the Originals). But then again, you can say those stories won't have repercussions on other material since it takes place after them.
That's why my helmet is gone!
EU structure // Rebel
DisCanon structure // Imperial or FO
@@CouncilCape897 thanks so much for clearing this up, it's been bugging me since the rise of skywalker
Does anyone know where he got that Biggs helmet from?
Joseph Trocino I think someone gave it to him as a gift. I want to say Molly. It’s like his most prized possession.
Hey I didn’t like the sequel as a whole. But I did like the first order they were cool throughout their year of showtime.
But in retrospect I love how the EU is still available to find and look back on while I can look forward to what Disney will bring inspired of George Lucas' films that gave us an incredible galaxy, far far away. . . .
fantastic series, thanks!!
We want long narrated slideshows
7:25 Amen bro!!!
How did they rationalize the Poe inconsistency in the dictionary?
Poe was a spice runner in his teens after running away from home. _Before_ he joined the New Republic. Pablo pretty much saved us from a massive contradiction right there if JJ didn't establish that when making the film and just couldn't be bothered to include that.
It says that Poe ran away from home when he was 15, as he was still coping with his mother's death and wasn't in the best of terms with his father. He soon met the Spice Runners of Kijimi, who would've killed him had he not proven to be an excellent pilot. After 5 years with the Spice Runners, he returned home and joined the New Republic Navy to follow a straighter path.
Does anyone know what issue of Darth Vader that he’s talking about at 2:03?
Well said 👍
All good thoughts king
After Kathleen Kennedy, I really want Dave Filloni to be the next prez of Lucasfilm. Only if he can still work in shows and movies as a director. If he can’t, then Pablo Hidalgo 👍
Dave Filoni has always seemed like a perfect successor to George in my view. But I also think Dave is right where he wants to be.
I'm very excited for 'phase 2' so to speak of disney star wars. I hope Drew Karpyshyn rejoins the fray
Cheers to that!
Books: A- haven’t read all of them but enjoyed those that I did. Only negative is the lack of series.
Series: A- Mandalorian and Rebels were great, Resistance not so much
Games: C+ Too few and the disaster with BF2.
Nice Video :)
Star Wars has yet to adapt a novel for the screen. I want Lucasfilm to give that a try.
