The Far Country, The Man From Laramie…some of my favorite films ever.
Check out Devil’s Doorway! Warner Archive released an amazing transfer on there.
Stewart's 2nd Western in a starring role and the first since WW2. He reinvents his film persona from an idealistic young man to a strong moral man. This is a great film overall!
Haven’t watched this movie In between 35 - 40 years ago on vhs… I liked it a lot… can’t wait to see the 4K
I loved this movie. I saw it in the local cinema when I was a kid I think it was in the 60's. I was obsessed with westerns in those days and this was one of my favorites. I love the open scene with the gunplay. It sets the whole feeling for the final scene. I won't reveal anything but you have to see it.
The James Stewart commentary was originally recorded for and released on the Universal Laserdisc of the film. It was also included on the later DVD release. In fact, at the end of the commentary, Stewart mentions how impressed he was with the laser technology.
Love all the Stewart Mann films. And yes I am getting the Criterion release.
The last shootout with Dutch Henry Brown was amazing viewing. Looked like the best Western I’ve ever seen on 4K. Better than Searchers, Rio Bravo, and Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
They shot the shooting competition FOR REAL with sharpshooters off-camera actually firing real bullets at the coins and jewellery. They sure don't make 'em like they used to.
That’s awesome. And everything comes off as more realistic because of it.
this is a great Western, one of Stewart's best! Definitely picking up this up in the next sale, should be coming up soon!?
I remember seeing in on Tv when I was a teenager,. I loved it !!!
Waiting for the Criterion sale and will get the 4K+Blu-ray version...Jimmy Stewart is my overall favorite movie star, but oddly I don't have a copy of this film (it would have been DVD if I had it). I think I saw it only once, on TV with my family in the 50s, probably on "Saturday Night at the Movies".
Definitely grab it then!
Saw this on the big screen in film school - an underrated, tough western that shows the intensity that Stewart was capable of delivering. Can’t wait to see it again!
He’s so good in it.
Great movie. Everyone said Jimmy Stewart couldn't pull off a serious western. He had only done one before thst called Destry Rides Again which was a comedy. The saloon scene in this film is what changed it all and everyone took him seriously and he made more great ones with Director Anthony Mann and John Ford. Bend of the River, The Naked Spur, Broken Arrow , Two Rode Together, The Man from Laramie are just a few other great ones. Not related to Jimmy Stewart but check out a mid 50s western with Richard Widmark called The Last Wagon. Very good story, great locations and amazing cinematography.
Two of my favorite westerns of all-time are from Anthony Mann & Jimmy Stewart: The Naked Spur and Bend of the River. Awesome films.
two terrific films
The Hellbenders and Kill Them All and Come Back Alone are both releasing in a 4k combo this week. Two glorious spaghetti westerns. I hope the transfers are well done.
I need those
Google: "Criterion often chooses not to include HDR on all their 4K titles because they prioritize preserving the original look of older films, where HDR technology wasn't considered during production, and applying HDR could sometimes alter the intended visual aesthetic, especially for black and white movies, making it seem unnatural or overly enhanced; they focus on achieving the best possible restoration based on the source material, even if it means not utilizing all the capabilities of the 4K format like HDR."
I've been notices this trend in BW films and other colored but otherwise films. No HDR implementation, don't know if they don't qualify for the implementation or what.
That's understandable. We got schooled when we thought we knew it all.
Sounds like a cop out - HDR is often touted has MORE effective on black and white movies. It enables parts of the image to be brighter than otherwise, which has nothing to do with changing the colours or aesthetic. Specular highlights or sun shots WILL look more realistic in HDR. Criterion just being lazy, knowing their fans will buy whatever they put in that crappy DVD packaging...
I don't understand a lot about thus, but I feel HDR makes black and white films look very good.
@@brunomachado7279 exactly 💯. Blacks are deeper and whites better without blooming, hence better contrast.
Westems always been entertaining especially the 60s and 70s movies
I'm definitely going to buy Winchester '73 on 4K at Barnes and Noble in July. Ken: Check out The Naked Spur, The Tin Star, Bend of the River, and The Far Country...if you haven't already.
Also...
...
...you NEED TO SEE The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford from 2007. The Blu-ray is antiquated, but the film is an absolute good....
Thanks for the recommendation!
Ken buddy you are not alone. I break that rule about once a month. Winchester 73 could not wait for a sale.
Will pick the 4K up in the next flash sales. Too many in my Criterion wishlist!
Nice!
Ken you do great. You don’t talk a lot and you show your enthusiasm for movies. This is about movie collections, movies in general. Anyone bitching isn’t a movie lover and should leave your channel. You are doing great!! Buddy!!!🎉
Thanks! Appreciate the support!
The Winchester Mystery House is a cool place to see if your ever in the Bay Area. The Halloween Tour is Awesome.
ALL Anthony Mann's westerns are terrific. So are his noirs.
Looking forward to this one as I too got into Westerns the last few years than before.
This is a really good one. High recommend
One of my favs and I got it on Tuesday. You know when you look at Stewart you don’t see a western, but he can really pull them off. Yes like Liberty Valance, and another good one is A Bend in the River👍🏻
He’s great at everything
Like you, I ordered "Winchester '73", actually I pre-ordered by a couple of weeks, so I got it as soon as possible, in Blu-Ray, and I thought it looked spectacular, so I agree with you there. Anthony Mann is a well respected Director, but it is surprising he was replaced after two weeks of filming on the epic movie "Spartacus", which of course starred Kirk Douglas. Apparently Douglas didn't agree with some of Mann's decisions, and since he was the Producer, he fired Mann and hired Stanley Kubrick, who he had worked with in "Paths Of Glory". Just an interesting side note to "Winchester '73". These things happen.
Such a solid movie.
Perspective guys. I'm a senior. When I was a kid I got an 8mm "Castle Films" Headline Edition of this movie. It was silent with title cards. It ran for about 3 minutes. It cost about 2.00 dollars. That's 17.00 dollars today. The 16mm Sound Edition was about 10 minutes long. It cost 27.00 dollars. That's 219.00 dollars today. I don't believe HDR is necessary on old movies. It's kind of revisionist.
underrated western for sure! on my wish list!
Looks incredible, Ken! Like you, I love the genre. Have you ever seen the Randolph Scott westerns? In particular, The Tall T, based on an Elmore Leonard short story. I find that movie even has some Die Hard vibes.
I have seen a few in that Millcreek 12-Film set. Good stuff and I need to return to it at some point.
Never seen it but will be picking it up. Barnes and Noble is having a 30% off sale right now.
Thanks, Ken. I think I'm going to pick this up. Amazon has it for a good price....
Nice! Hope you enjoy it!
I’ll buy it because…Waco Johnny Dean! OMG!
I’ll get it. I love the movie. But I’ll wait for the sales.
Rules are meant to be broken...especially when talking about physical media purchases! 🤣
Ken, if you haven’t yet seen One Eyed Jacks (The only Movie Marlon Brando directed and starred in), McCabe and Mrs Miller or any Sam Peckinpah western (Ride the High Country, The Wild bunch et-all), do yourself a favor, put them in your rotation.
The Wild Bunch I loved. Still need to watch my McCabe Criterion and I’ll put the others on my list as well!
I can't believe that they used the original optical sound track negative for the audio. It's not a format that can be reproduced without distortion. It's very expensive to create a new positive but hopefully that's what they did. There is a way to scan the negative with a laser and digitally process the track now, but it's still not ideal and is used for budget limited projects, not on significant titles like Winchester '73. I'd love to know what they did.
i picked up the bluray, this is an excellent western..
Watching your review here, never seen it, Do you own Solier Blue?
Have ordered it from hmv 4k steelbook, beautiful artwork Ken.
I wish Criterion would send you stuff so you could do more of these new release reviews.
I don’t think they send stuff to anyone. I’ll try to dive into them more month to month this year.
Gotta love James Stewart. Haven't seen this movie but it seems awesome! My favorite James Stewart films are Vertigo and It's a Wonderful Life.
Definitely check this one out!
@@midlevelmediaI totally will! 🙂
I already have the Movie on DVD from the Universal collection. Box art is ok, Has movie poster on back and has extra features o DVD . James Stewart interview and original theatrical release. So I will wait to find it online later for a steal. Keep on watching movies in the free world....
Told ya this film would be worthwhile!
The Naked Spur is another Stewart/Anthony Mann collaboration I would strongly sugges.. It has a Warner Archive blu ray.
Yes! Really enjoyed it!
I'm not the first to mention Anthony Mann also directed James Stewart in The Naked Spur, The Man from Laramie, Bend of the River, and The Far Country.
James Stewart was directed by Delmar Daves in Broken Arrow (pro Indian) in the same year Anthony Mann directed Robert Taylor (as a half breed? pro indian...) in The Devil's Doorway (1950) about as film noir a western you will ever see (camera by John Alton). I believe Mann's next film was Winchester '73.
anyways.
I have to say I don't understand why the bland TV look of John Ford's The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is so highly regarded to this day. Ford made many earlier westerns starting with Stagecoach and, especially, My Darling Clementine that are better, although, James Stewart was not in either of these latter 2 B&W western classics.
And a few fun facts about "Winchester '73" in the part when the soldiers camp is trapped by the Indians you will see a young Tony Curtis as a soldier & Rock Hudson as the Indian chief and James Stewart in the first smart business deal of its kind he declined his usual star payment but instead took a weekly pay & a percentage of the gross profits & when the film was a hit he made a huge payout fortune for its day🤑💰🤠
I did share those first 2 fun facts in my video! 😀
Rules were made to be broken.
Get the 4K, cause it also comes with the Blu-ray.
So does the Blu-ray. Lol
Did any American actor ever have a string like Jimmy Steward did from 1946 to 1962? Starting with It's a Wonderful Life and then the Anthony Mann westerns and the Alfred Hitchcock thrillers plus Harvey and Two Rode Together and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. I don't even think John Wayne over the same period matches it.
Winchester 73 is also part of a $13 box set with five other very good Westerns on DVD.
I know this may not be easy to digest, but, it's the same damn film you'll see on 4K.
And this set also goes on sell for less than $10. Just a tip for those more interested in the film than "bragging rights".
And, no, I am not anti-4K. But the disparity it price for a "whiter whites" and "inkier blacks" is getting ridiculous.
When will the next sale be?
Flash sale should be in March. Then Barnes and Noble in July
😊😊😊😊😊 great video on a classic film😊. My favorite film of Stewart is flight of Phoenix criterion.
I had to stop the tape 5 minutes into the video. I haven't seen this movie before and plan to pick it up. Dude was giving away too much. I blame it on Starbucks.
Apologies. Actively tried to not spoil, but if you want to know nothing, I wouldn’t recommend watching a review. Even talking about the picture quality, it’s hard not to spoil some aspects.
@midlevelmedia Stopping the tape was the point. No plan to finish watching your review and no plan to read what others wrote in the comments section.
It won’t look any better on the Blu-ray ken if the 4K doesn’t have HDR. I’m sorry but a 4K that isn’t supporting Dolby Vision or any form of HDR isn’t worth purchasing imo. Critreon and Kino are suckers for releasing these lazy cash grabs, and that’s exactly what they are. The big reason we upgrade our beloved films to 4k is for the HDR. Save your hard earned cash on these and wait for a proper release by a proper label like Arrow
Killers of the Flower Moon was a shitty ass movie.
I mean it was ok.
Get faster to the point
The entire video is the point.
