I've had parrots for over 30 years; most of the perches in and on their cages, are concrete; different diameters, too. Some wood dowels, some branches cut to fit, too. The concrete ones are the highest in the cage, and routine climbing on them gradually wears down the claws. I haven't had to trim any of my bird's nails in that time. The most important thing, is to tailor the diameter of the perches to the individual bird. Stand him on the perch, and the nails should be resting on the concrete section, as well as at night, because your bird will 'lock on' his feet to the perch while sleeping, and you want those claws to be on the concrete during that time. You can also buy 'twisty' concrete perches, so your bird can move about on them, to get their feet into different positions for comfort. Each month, I remove the perches, scrape them off, wash them, and bake them to keep them clean. Their perches are cleaner than my furniture.

Isn't this usually why people usually have a perch that's made of concrete in the cage (I'm told it wears down the claws so they don't grow too long)? Also, I'm told that diet affects bird beak length to a degree.
