Greetings from South Africa. I take it that this a new 300tdi video. I do remember sending you the original one from the old channel. Do you maybe know what that air noise is called when reving? I seem to hear it quite a bit on some of the more modern pickup trucks here but I've never known what that air noise is called.
Joshua Preyser Hi, i found my old video was a bit too dark. That noise is from the viscous fan, it should disengage after a short while from starting up but the clutch on it is seized
Thanks for the reply I've always wanted to know what that air noise was so thanks for that. If you wanted to, coud you disconnect the fan altogether or is it better just to leave it?
You can remove them but if you're towing up a hill you will wish you kept it on. But a better alternative is an electric fan controlled by the thermostat.
Interesting. I just thought I would ask because I personally find the sound of the fan a bit annoying as I prefer just the pure sound of the engine in terms of sound. I wonder how it would be done If could modify, let'ss take for example, the 300tdi engine in a Defender 110 station wagon/double cab pickup to sound as if it hasen't been modified but it feels powerful enough for toeing uphill without the viscous fan. I especially love the 2.5 and 2.8 litre turbo diesel engines from the Isuzu TF (KB) double cabs because of the fact that most of the engines don't use the viscous fan, even when starting up, although I have heard some of them driving along and the fan runs as the revs increase and decrease but it is rare. It's only really on the D-Max (also called KB) models that those fan sounds are quite common.
For every day driving, no towing, you could easily remove the viscous fan. Just make sure the radiator, coolant and water pump is in good condition. I don't like the sound of the fan, it's too whooshy. I like the sound of the engine. 2.8 Di Isuzu engine is good, very noisy! Because the cylinder head is made of thin metal.
