For the most part this was a very useful demonstration. Very good explanation of the original grind and the conversion to the swept back grind. There was some problem with the commentary while cutting as the lathe noise overpowered the voice. Also the camera was not close enough on several shots to see detail. I realize this video is a year old. I would hope that any recent videos will have corrected these problems. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day.

Hi Marcus, thank you for your comment. The answer is neither, the tools are measured from outside of stock to the opposite flute. On spindle gouges this is approximately the stock size of the bar. Below is the stock size of our material against what gouge this would be. Please note, these measurements are what we buy in so with heat treatment and surface finishing the blade will be slightly smaller than this: Stock size Gouge size 10.3mm ¼” 13mm 3/8” 16mm ½” With regards to the blade lengths would you like to know the flute length or how far the blade protrudes from the handle? Best Wishes, Record Power.
@21:13, using the dividers this way is not safe , even if you warn that it could cause an injury, there are safer ways, with dividers ,measure the Chuck jaws say 2 inches (50mm ) set dividers to 1 inch (25mm) set the right point at the center mark made by the tail stock live center then scribe with the left point or using a pencil and ruler ,,.I have seen other tuners adopting these methods on UA-cam , and warn that turning can be dangerous, we can make it a bit safer, ,.Stay safe ,,.Regards Alf
Morning Alf, thanks for your message , as you are aware Andrew Hall is a established professional and does use the method you mention on other projects, on this particular project he does explain the reason for this technique and warn the viewer like you mention of the outcome if done incorrectly. hope you are enjoying our sessions and hope you will be watching and taking part in the future?

That's one great finish straight from the tool. The wet stone grinder must be helping quite a bit too. Well done, a good demo.

Hi, are the bowl gouge (and spindle) sizes measured by the flute width or shank diameter? Also what are the blade lengths. TIA
