España no ha enviado una canción a Eurovisión ha enviado una pieza que hipnotiza y hechiza a todo el mundo. Esto está por encima de la música, es totalmente revolucionario e indomable.

Wat een leuke reactie Jesper! Andere Nederlandse songfestivalfan hier 🙂, ik heb in Spanje gestudeerd en ben er veel geweest, vooral ook in de regio waar deze muziekstijl vandaan komt. Ze zingt in de flamencostijl, ook het ritme en het handklappen komt daar uit. De tekst is gebaseerd op een slaapliedje: "kom bij me mijn kind, kom tegen me aan, ik zal je beschermen". In het tweede couplet zingt ze "mijn kind, als ik sterf, laat ze mij in de maan begraven zodat ik je elke nacht kan zien"; vandaar ook de witte cirkel waar ze in zit. Het gordijn is gebaseerd op een soort Spaanse omslagdoek zoals haar grootmoeder die droeg, ook een symbool van bescherming. Dus ja er zit een hele hoop symboliek in; de zuid-Spaanse cultuur is nogal van de symbolen en de rituelen dus niet gek dat je het bovennatuurlijk vind lijken.

The version in Studio was in my bottom, but when I saw it in Live, it made me feel in trance the whole time. The backstage of the song is so powerful: is a song dedicated to her nanny (Carmen), a NANA, when little Blanca listening when she go to sleep Every night as a kid. After that, she makes an ancestral ritual of empowering Women, the matriarchs. The origins of the Earth. The red lights in the second part are the Beats of the Heart of her grandmother. The electronic base is soooo modern, and makes a flamenco vibe became so actual. The past and the future in 3 minutes. PURE art, a masterpiece, a full pack designed by her, with absolutely no mistakes. We deserve to win after 60 years this competition with EAEA. 🙌🙌

EAEA is a flamenco lullaby. EAEA is an onomatopoeia that Spanish mothers do to calm their children while they are crying. The song tells the story of a mother who wants to be buried in the moon when she dies to see her child every night except one (the new moon day). The red strings of the staging are very typical in the Spanish flamenco costumes. Also the song has references to the poems of Federico Garcia Lorca, one of the most important poets of Spain. This is the most Spanish entry we ever had and we are so proud of her.
The song main theme is maternal love, how maternal figures protect their child, even in the afterlife.
The song is about a mother expressing her love for her child and her desire to look after him/her even after she dies, she says something poetic like "my child when i die, may they bury me in the Moon, so that i'll see you every night"
Eaea is a lullaby word for children to fall asleep.
The song has flamenco and general spanish folklore inspirations and uses tradional themes in spanish literature like the child, the Moon, death, the night...
But in reality, Blanca isn't singing abour herself but about her deceased grandmother (who introduced her to this type of music) and how grandmothers are protective, she is paying tribute to her grandmother.
The emotion that she is trying to express is passion about wanting to protect your child and at some moments happiness about her child and being happy to protect him.
The supernatural vibe is because it fits the song themes of death, the moon... And because she is doing like a ritual to feel the power from her grandmother and the other women's ancestors.

I heard one of the composers said there will be a revamp to make it more likable for a wider audience with no loss of authenticity. I guess it will be for the grand final like last year and I think it's a strategy in the Spanish delegation in order to surprise in the final like Chanel did magically

Like many other flamenco singers, Blanca doesn't have vocal singing education. It comes naturally. Flamenco is a world heritage human wealth by UNESCO. And Spanish are proud of their culture

El flamenco es universal reconocido por la UNESCO fíjate que hasta en Japón se estudia es un legado cultural fantástico .

This is an ode to motherhood. Spanish mothers are so passionate and protective. They look after us even after death. She says: 'when i die, they bury me in the moon for looking at you every night'. The song is a nana: the kind of music that spanish parents use to calm their babies. They say "Ea Ea". She´s even connecting with our ancestors in a ritual. Women of the past, who are looking after us forever. That´s because she use this kind of arabic singing at the beginning: connecting with our andalusian origins.

So this is what we call flamenco fusión, basically mixing traditional Flamenco music style with more modern styles (like electronic music in this case).
Besides the style itself, the lyrics are full of references to the late poet Federico García Lorca, who is a very influential writer whose work was a celebration of Spanish (a Spanish Roma) folk.
So this piece is incredibly culturally charged which I think is one of the reasons for it's triumph in the Benidorm Fest.

The feeling of angriness and tension comes from microtonality. Basically at some parts steps between notes are smaller than we’re use to hear in western music.
Blanca Paloma's song is a play, a performance made to be represented and with the staging it makes sense, using Spanish (Lorca) but also universal symbolic references. It is an invocation, a call, a song to what makes us feel safe and strong at the same time, which makes us enter a hypnotic trance.
She relates it to her grandmother, to that maternal thing that takes care of us and protects us. The red fringes that hang down and that she already explained reminded her of her grandmother's shawl, form a circle that is like a maternal womb that gives us light and nourishes us. She goes through that uterus that is fertilized (this is how I understand those hands that surround her and hold her for a few seconds). Then the miracle of life is done.
The moon is the symbol of the feminine, which engenders, nourishes and makes it grow. It is present every night except when it goes out on a new moon. During the performance, the sound “ea, ea” is repeated loudly and rhythmically, which is the lullaby that mothers sing to children when they are afraid, when they cry, to reassure them and give them strength. Nothing bad is going to happen... The dancers also imitate the movement of the arms that they cradle spasmodically. It looks like a sway of waves... Because the sea also lulls and transforms with the phases of the moon and is the quintessential feminine element. It's a beautiful song of love with traditional flamenco sounds ! It's a masterpiece ! Putting a new dimension to Eurovision 2023 !
Blanca made this song after her grandma Carmen passed away. This song is supposed to be her grandma's voice singing a lullaby from Heaven to Blanca to comfort her. The lyrics are a mother talking to a baby trying to calm it dow and stop crying, putting the baby to sleep, but the performance is -in words of Blanca- a ritual to get in touch with her grandma spirit. That's why it looks like some sort of witchcraft/ritual. In fact, Blanca said in an interview that she actually made a ritual with her dancers before performing, to get in touch with her grandma Carmen.
About the staging, Blanca was a professional set designer before her debut as a singer. That's why stage, lighting and camera angles are on point all the time.
The red curtains are a metaphor of grandma Carmen's shawl, which had red fringes. Blanca said "the stage is a safe place for me because Carmen 's shawl is protecting me".
There's a part of the song that Blanca sings looking at the sky with a white circle on the floor, in which she sings: "when I die, bury me on the moon, so I can see you everynight, everything except one". The white circle is the moon and Blanca sings "bury me in the moon" while looking at the sky because her grandma is not on Earth anymore.
The songs pretends to be a lullaby for a baby but actually is a song of grief after someone loved passed away, and how its spirit/souls comfort you while you cry because of the departure.
"ea,ea" are the words mothers say to their babies while they try to make them.stop crying and fall asleep: "ea, ea, ea, stop crying, it's alright" kind of.
It's a modernized flamenco lullaby and the key phrase is "my son, when I die I want to be buried in the Moon for me be able to see you every night, except one", being that exception the new Moon phase in which our satellite seems fadded not reflecting the Sun's light because Earth is in the middle.

yeah, she's singing in a flamenco kind of way, which is traditional music, singing and dancing from spainsh roma people, andalucía (southern spain) and other parts of spain too which in the recent history were influenced by andalucía, like madrid or cataluyna (cataluyna even has its own subgenre called rumba catalana). she's from the valencian comunity, which is right beneath catalunya, and her family is from andalucía, so she basically grew up with it in her household. the song is supposed to be a reinterpretation of the lullaby her grandmother used to sing to her to put her to sleep (that's why it's called "ea ea" and there are a lot of "ea ea", bc it's the expresion parents will use when they're cradling their children to put then asleep or to calm them down - ofc with muuuuch less intensity dhfkgjdshgfd -)

En absoluto. Lo único que puede tener un ligero aire lorquiano es que se desarrolla como un drama que narra lo que una madre, sin duda del Sur de España, le dice a su niño en forma de nana y con metáforas asimilables a las de la poesía lorquiana pero no del mismo calado. De cualquier forma no hace falta que sea lorquiano el tema, lo importante es que se nota la raiz flamenca pero con música electrónica, nada que ver con flamenco puro pero con un resultado bello y de calidad que nos puede representar ante Europa de una manera notable y lejos de las típicas horteradas faltas de calidad que imperaban en los últimos años. La elección me parece muy acertada.

I was so disappointed as we had a unique entry with Megara as we won't have in years. This is a song for an etnic song festival, not for the Eurosong. And flamenco obviously does not represent Spain as a whole. Megara was the perfect choice to get European votes with song, staging and performance and Spain has wasted the occasion and the band efforts. So sad and I am not the only one disappointed. Idk how people even like this one bit, it doesnt even give spanish vibes :/

People only like it for the staging and the part at the end, but it feels like the whole song is just " aeh aeh" or eoh eoh" or some weird combination of vocals like that :/
