How do you calculate how much weight is needed ?

nice job of course. i made bar ends myself to try to kill vibrations and pain in the hands. but i instaled them easy way. 3 cm rubber hose on a bolt,and nut on the end,put that in the bar,tightened it and hose is compressed in the bar and make good connection. 10 min to make it

I've done that many times mate and it works really well, but they can rattle loose, if you're gonna do that you need the bar weight to have a reduced internal section that reaches inside the bar to keep it centralised, and these weights are cut flush on the end!

Very nice sanded and clear coated! I always had terrible carpal tunnel and wrist/hand numbness all my motorcycling life, so no matter how many titanium bolts, parts I cut off, and swiss cheesed items I went insane with, I always made sure I bought new or transferred over my favourite bar end weights that were OEM Suzuki GS1150ES. Those hulking brutes look suspiciously like them, it would be funny to try and figure out what was the longest lasting in-stock Suzuki part that was fitted to multiple model bikes over the years, hee hee.
That's a really interesting thought buddy, I imagine the actual answer will be something like a generic fastener of some sort, or a univeral style fitting, but for something more specific, you're right, bar weights could be a close contender! And also for what it's worth, the fuel tank filler caps today look suspiciously like the same filler caps on the first Bandits, which was early 90's?!

I didn't put on any bar weights after a street bike conversion on my ex-racebike. But's it's only a 600. Love the narrower handlebar when flicking through city traffic. The original Busa bar weights are massive. Suzuki knew why. Cheerio, Günter/Nürnberg
Hiya Penny and Del. That's a solution I have not seen before - my experience is limited to the expanding rubber plug method, which is not infallible. I came back from a ride missing a bar end once, and now I check they're tight before every ride. This method looks like it would give you plenty of warning if it starts to come loose, and you could always use a mild thread locker on the internal and external threads.
As for the haters, that's what they thrive on, and remoteness of the internet makes them appear braver than they really are. My own rule - hard learned and harder to follow - is not to argue with idiots because they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. Same goes for trolls and haters. Please remember that there are those of us out here that really enjoy the content you produce, the hard work that goes into it, and the lessons you share. As my dear Dad always says, "Illegitimi non carborundum"!

Hi mate, it's a falacy that things are considered to automatically come undone, remember this is how they were connected to the standard bike and they don't fall out, I've used fine threads and there's 20mm length on contact, something like 25-30 rotations and it's nipped up seriously tight... there's no way they're coming undone mate... just like a sump plug under the engine, same thread, same dia. and they don't fall out without threadlock and they're a lot closer to vibration! In fact, if anything, considering previously one of the screws snapped off in the factory bar, it's more relevant to actually add a dab of anti seize to the M6 screw because it's steel in to aluminium... but the factory don't do this, it's just a precaution!

This is the right way to do it. I have struggled with rubber and different metalexpanders for years as a quickfix but nothing works. A good sulotion for bar-end mirrors too.. Thank you Del and Penny.

which is made of full metal with preparation for an M6 screw, is part of the weight.
P.S. Note that the weight is also a slider, so in the Honda the internal bushing also knows how to rotate.
Your adapter is the jewel in the crown, and you can insert a full metal rod into the pipe core for added weight.
Nice work that Del. Just one question, speaking from experience with bar weights, will you be locking them in with some thread lock??
I did consider it, you may not remember, but I previously made a video a fair while back where the left hand bar weight seized completely and I snapped the screw getting it off, had to drill and re-tap the bar... that's because it was steel into aluminium, as it is now... and whilst I can't ever see these coming undone, certainly not enough to fall out (there's a full inch of that super fine thread), so that's a lot of turn before they drop out... but if I do need to use any compaounds, then perhaps a single dab of light threadlock on the outside of the slug as it's aluminium, but I would be put anti-seize on the screw because it's steel.

Hi, I did not know the purpose of these ends was to add weight to the handlebar. What is the reason why that weight is needed?

Hi mate, that is still pretty much the foremost way of securing bar weights, in fact, that's how the brass ones were held in and I'm sure I'll always use that method... just wanted to do something a little more creative this time, always good excuse for practising the skill set!

Could have done, but it's about 45mins to change all the gears in the gearbox to cut one thread, then change it all back again! It's not an easy switch over on this machine...

I swear the bar ends for an 03-08 suzuki vstrom or bandit have bar end setups that can be ordered that would just replace the screw and give you a much longer one with the wedge those bars want. (But not the point of building it)
Yes indeed, many bar ends for with an expanding wedge, it's a pretty standard colution, even with the factory, but I first saw this design back on an old Yamaha EXUP RU back in the 90's, they literally had a one piece metal block with the end machined and threaded to M16 and the outer end pressed with a hex hole... just seemed logical and secure to me.
Correct bar weights are important. How do you know the original bar ends are right for the new bars which will be different in weight and therefore have different harmonics? Is there a calculation you can do?
My word, I doubt that very much mate, but the closest we can get is to start with the OEM set up and then see how it is and if we need to adjust, such is the nature of development don't you think?!

Captain stock here aproves, of course.But would secretly like to see the brass ones reworked. Don't tell anyone! But a good inventive fix none the less. Also Mr paranoid here would maybe put threadlock on the larger outer thread?

Indeed that is paranoya...Ally to Ally threads don't move mate, that's exactly why i used ally for the slug.. and if i did lock it in, how would i ever get it out..!?... and actually, a dab of antisieze on the screw would be best as its steel...you may remember in the first project it snapped off getting them out.!

In paranoia land it was never coming out .(Not without shortening the bars each end! ) Yes aluminium thread to thread , makes sense The detail often passes over like the red arrows now days. I sometimes have to watch the videos over again to appreciate what's actually happened! The obvious isn't always obvious. I actually bought the taps and die to make the extender slugs for Penny's Scrambler shocks, they were M16 fine thread and it worked really well with the ID of these bars, so as it's the second use of them, they've started to pay for themselves now! In fact, they weren't that expensive, about £25 for the lot I think! Enjoy the rest of your week there, D&Px

Hi Nicholas, I did consider it, [erhaps for the final 'torque around' at the end of the project, but refer you to the answer here I gave below:

Answered this a few times already.. it's a fine thread on the slug and over 20mm long.. that won't fall out without doing two dozen turns first.. and ally into ally it's not likely to loosen anyway... Perhaps a dab of antisieze on the m6 screw though as it's steel in to ally..!

If bar ends (Weighted ) are needed on most bikes, then on our big scoot(piaggio mp3 500) they are plastic, so what does that mean really Del
Scooters have much smaller wheels, less reciprocating mass, and therefore less gyroscopic effect, also the forks are way lighter too, so just less need for damping weight.

Having studied my analytics, when we used to leave it up for 5 seconds I noticed people would open the video, then instantly skip forward, clearly some people like the action to start instantly and I felt this way, it's still there for those who want to pause and read it, but it doesn't intrude in the start of the video!
