I don’t complain Jose about my life in fact every day I look out my window and I see a beautiful landscape stretched out before me with mountains in the distance a blue sky above me and I think how blessed I am to be here how blessed I am that Mexico accepted me and opened its arms in a warm embrace and has allowed me to live here in this wonderful country.
I too am originally from the US I’ve been here in Mexico for almost 4 years now and have since acquired temporary residency which is good for four more years and I don’t struggle financially at all. I live on Social Security and I don’t even get the maximum amount of that but it’s more than adequate for how I live here and I am retired and I live better here than I ever did back in the states. People complain about how expensive it is I don’t get it obviously they were hoping to buy and live with the same types of things that they had back in the US without taking into account the fact that most of that stuff would be imported as you said and therefore cost a lot more money. I stay away from US brands I don’t go anywhere near Walmart or Costco or any of those types of places. In fact I try my to always buy Mexican brands especially when it comes to food because they’re just healthier they don’t have all the added sugars in it if they do they identify this clearly on the label added salts and preservatives in all that stuff that’s also clearly identified on the packaging so I don’t touch that stuff if I can help it. As far as walking goes walking is second nature to me I’ve always walked i’ve never owned a car and here I live in Oaxaca city by the way it’s quite hilly so I get a good workout every time I leave the house so those people who don’t like to walk yeah I think they probably should stay where they’re at they’re either too lazy or too out of shape to do the right thing by themselves and the environment. I’ve never understood that anyway. Before I came to Mexico I had learned how to survive under harsh conditions I won’t go into any specifics but outside of the language for me Mexico has been almost a piece of cake. Yes getting used to doing things differently and getting set up in a new country has its challenges but if you know how to deal with adversity it’s not difficult to manage and it’s all about your mindset and if you’re coming to Mexico for the right reasons meaning you’re not coming just to save a few bucks. You got it, man! “Expats” don’t feel like they need to assimilate. As a child, I had to do this when I moved to the US, and it wasn’t easier than it’s for an adult, but people need to do it to survive.

I disagree. There is no way for anyone to know how every expat feels about assimilating in a new society. That’s just rubbish! Not all Expats think this way. I would argue that more older expats have trouble assimilating. I guess old dogs don’t want to learn new tricks.
I'm an American considering moving to Mexico. If I do, I will refer to myself as an immigrant, not an expat.

México has the biggest differences between the poor and the rich and you can see it in a neighborhood, forcing people to form communities with that reality. In the USA many are intolerant of others much more of immigrants. Sadly we can see it around the world with the south being a “threat”. Expats can pay to have services done and buy a house in a upper class neighborhood but getting out of there will make them more of what they are. If you are classist, intolerant, racist, snobby etc. The USA is #1 in consumption of goods and services so don’t look for any other countries to match that, Mexico has some of the most human people on earth, if you loathe stuff and things and despise others for not being like you, Mexico is not for you! Live the best life where you can or desire but don’t be selfish and intolerant!✌️

We love it here, been here 9 months. I consider myself a grateful guest in this wonderful place. My life is so much better here. Any little inconvenience is nothing compared to the kindness and wonderful culture of the people here. We live in a regular Mexican neighborhood and have been welcomed like family.

I´ve been living in Mexico for a year now and have never felt “not welcome”. Most people are friendly and happy to talk to someone who decides to move to their country. Most people don't understand how people from Europe, especially Germany, want to live here. But to be honest, I never missed anything from Germany from day one. I rarely had a hard time here. My Spanish is bad, but I'm trying to get better every day. People appreciate the fact that you are willing to learn the language. It's not my dream to live here, but I have definitely more quality in my life. I am happy here and it feels more like home to me than my home back in Germany.

Just moved to Mexico City and this is the 3rd day of running and I’ve met some other runners who helped me get over a hill. Day one I was second guessing myself because I felt really alone but I have been speaking Spanish like a baby and many people have been so helpful.

Thank you for this. I really appreciate you calling out 'expats' for what they actually are, i-m-m-i-g-r-a-n-t-s. Some really don't want to call themselves immigrants because they haven't come to terms with their reality, until they do they shouldn't be surprised that Mexican people, specially those who migrated to the United States of America or Canada before will scoff at their insistence to call themselves 'expats'. And oh the summersaults they'll do to explain why they individually are not an immigrant.
After living here for over 6 years I can honestly tell you, anytime that term expat is used outside of the actual expat circles, it really does make people cringe as it defines a rich and entitled American foreigner. Mexicans appreciate it when you call yourself an immigrant and they don't take too kindly to those who refer to themselves as expats. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing with us.

I think that the way to go about moving to a country where is not your culture and people changing your mindset entirely is required and not thinking that because you are going to a country where your dollar can buy more that gives you an entitlement over the citizens of these country. Taco Bell - the real Mexican food. The thing I miss😮 the most in Merida is Taco bell. When I go to Orlando each year, I eat as much as I can at Taco Bell.
I have been in Merida for 3 years and would not move back to the United states, even though I could. The best thing to do is take everything you believe about how people should act, put it in a box, and throw it away. Doing that will solve many of the adjustment problems. Regardless of how people act, just think that must be the way it's intended to be. Doing this eliminates a lot of the aggravations one will have living down here.
Trash in the street, okay. Dogs running loose, okay. Breastfeeding in public, okay. Not stopping at stop signs, okay. Bus not on time, okay. People in Mexico have chosen to live this way and it will not change until they decide otherwise, regardless of whether I get aggravated.
Moreover, there is no supreme power that says they are wrong and I am right. In fact it's the exact opposite. FOR THEM this is the right way to live. If I am going to adequately become part of this community, then I just have to accept these things the way they are.
In exchange for accepting the way things are, I live among some of the friendliest, nicest people I've ever met. My neighbors are kind, I go to a Mexican church which is nice, and the Mexican people at the stores are friendly. By living in a Mexican neighborhood I stay away from Americans who would be complaining about the little things in life. For me this has been one of the best lives I've ever had.

Mexico is actually one of the easier countries to adjust to as.compared to other expat destinations in SE Asia, South America or the Balkans. The people are lovely and Spanish is a relatively easy language to learn for English speakers. I would say that if you are unhappy living in Mexico, Panama might be a bit easier, but beyond that, you should probably forget moving or retiring abroad.

Honest question, are there racism or unsafe conditions for people who are younger and maybe a bit ignorant. Like a blonde, blue eyed 27 year old female, will it be safe to move alone? Should I perhaps move with friends? Same sex? Opposite sex?
Anywhere in the world is unsafe if you are aware of your surroundings and use common sense. If you can survive in a modern city in the USA and speak Spanish you will be more than fine. The thing is it all depends on what part of Mexico you want to move to. But in my experience it is relatively safe as long as you are aware of what is going on around you. Can ya make a video on the right to travel laws? USA travel vs Mexico travel. Is a driver licance,insurance,and registration mandatory.
It's a complicated issue because the enforcement or lack of enforcement of "Local Traffic Laws" all differs from state to state. But long story short under the Mexican constitution you do not need a license, insurance or registration and most cops will uphold said constitution if you know your own rights and are fluent enough in Spanish to communicate properly with them. Because many will still insist on the traffic laws and they will prompt you to letting you know that you broke xyz law and so on and so fourth so again you have to properly communicate with them. Doing so in broken Spanish is not enough to properly communicate this with them. Either way if a Cop pulls you over the only thing they will ask for or care for is your license and registration. But mainly your registration because they want to make sure you actually own the car or that the car is legally registered if it is with a local tag. They dont care about insurance and license can be from another country and even expired. Even if you dont have one worse they can do is fine you. Same for registration but thats where it might get a bit dicey for many reasons. BTW all this is talking about Mexican Car with Mexican Papers. If you got American paperwork its whatever i wouldnt worry about it because they can not really fine you. Anyways to answer your question in Most of Mexico they will allow you to freely travel and they know that you can do so without registering your car or have a license. But in order for you to do so you need to speak really good Mexican Spanish with some of that Mexican legalize and know your constitution and codes and all that jazz. They wont just let you go if you say "I got my right to do whatever I want!" LOL You gotta convey all that information civically and you will be fine in 95% of the cases.
But as i said each state is different. Some states/areas are automatic and dont require you to have a drivers license, registration or insurance. While other states are strict about those Local "Laws", but they will respect the constitution as long as you know what you are talking about and how to convey everything and act peacefully. Hope that makes sense. I am not making a video on it because I dont want to encourage anyone to come out here and act a fool, because if you do they will make an example out of you. Anyways hope all this helps answer your question.

I've lived in both Cities and L.A is mostly Mexican and me and other Latinos were an anomaly out there. I actually kinda liked it, that made me feel special lol Pero en Miami? Its all Latino all the Time! Yes there is a majority Cuban Population there but thats not all the latinos. There are actual neighborhoods in Miami the size of Korea Town, Tarzana, West Hollywood, Compton whos equivalent back in Miami is a complete area full of people from Venezuela, or Nicaragua, or El Salvador, or Argentina or..... and i could go on and on. Los Angeles is AMAZING and my favorite city in the US but you can not compare it to Miami when talking about Latino vibe and Culture. L.A is Hollywood and Miami is where they hold the Latin Grammys 😅
Jose Ive lived in Mexico city from Nebraska for 4 years. It amazes me how much truth you speak about situations here. My Mexican wife tells me my Spanish has improved but its a long road. Your so spot on about some food brand being a real issue for people. No you cant get StarKist tuna can you live with Dolores? We live in a middle class alcaldia and i see everyday people making a lot tougher decisions than tuna. Your blue collar background has served you well and you use what you have out of your background

You’re right! It’s about $1,500/week living in Southern California. 😯 My car was stolen twice and my rent alone is $2500/mo. I’d love to move to Mexico, I just hope my son who is 7 will adjust well and we will be safe as I am a single lady. Help!

You can do it!!! Never say never...your son will adjust...he's young...don't let anybody tell you differently...Just do it!!! Being a single woman shouldn't stop you...I live in New York as a single woman...it's not easy but I'm strong and I make it work!! They always say...if you can live in NEW YORK...you can live in any Country or City...New York will either make or break you and it has done both but it teaches you a whole lot about life...so...yes, I can adjust to fit in...you can too...don't waste time...it's precious...good luck!!!

I haven’t visited yet, but will next month and will be able to better decide then. It also looks a little flat, so someone mentioned Campeche or even Puerto Vallarta for more hills. I’d rather not live on the West Coast though because of earthquakes. Just want to be safe and live more simply wherever that may be. Open to suggestions. 😊
Moving can be very expensive and stressful; I have watched people that plan for years to move and then when they do, they still are not ready. So yeah, I am sure there are many people that move back... For me I kind of like living half in Mexico and Half in the states, however at some point I will probably go full time in one side or the other... I love your story and you are so lucky that you have a beautiful wife and life! You are a talented guy and have a great life ahead!

Here's the reason I didn't move: I felt like if my wife and kids weren't happy there they would just blame all their unhappiness on me moving them there. Probably a stupid reason but I just kept imagining this growing resentment from them if they didn't like it, despite everyone loving our trips to Mérida. That's definitely something to consider if it's not just you moving.
I guess its better for you to grow resentment than for them to do so..... I would just have an honest conversation with them about the situation, let them know the Pros and Cons and what could go wrong or right, and so on and so fourth, and if everyone is on board then there is no one to blame everyone knew what they were getting into. I truly believe that you need at least 2,500 a month to live comfortably with no stress and that's the bare minimum...I don't like being stressed and I'm not trying to come back to the States once I leave...I might have to keep my apartment for a few months just to be on the safe side...I live in NYC...it's not easy to find a decent Apartment in a good neighborhood...landlord...clean...I have that so I have to be absolutely sure before I make that move so...I plan to visit first

Inflation is ridiculous in the USA right now. I am a little "chiflado" so when we go to McAllen we but a few grocery items at the HEB. We usually walk out of the store with 3 bags and about $100.00 poorer. If it wants for remote work I would be working just as hard if not harder and be living a little bit poorer. When you factor in gas, its really tough.

We will be going to Merida this July and stay for a month or so to vacation and look for a house to buy and live for part of the year that is cooler weather months. We are retired and I have family in Merida and i was born in Merida and my parents move to L.A. when i was 8 yrs old. I think the main issue is that most people that want to move to Mexico is for economic reason as in the USA is too expensive, but most people did not plan for their retirement years at least for the older people.
