Idk if this is what they were going for, but I always love the idea that part of the reason Resetti is so insane is that he's basically trapped in Groundhogs day if he only appears when you cheat and start screwing with the time space continuum.
Are moles and groundhogs any different? Or are they part of a similar genus(or something like that?, like dogs compared to wolves? Idk I'm not a zoologist)

That story about the kids who lost their mom breaks my heart, even more so because it's the character's mom that sends a bunch of stuff. I guess they could have been getting stuff from their real mom but I bet most of it was from the in-game mom. I grew up with this game and loved every second of it. It was weird playing Animal Crossing back then...like playing some secret game that you couldn't really explain why it was fun.

My mom and I literally bonded over the Gamecube Animal Crossing. Sometimes she'd steal the console from me just to play it after work. Once she picked me up early from 6th grade, and in the parking lot when I asked if anything was wrong, she said "No, I just found a REALLY big fish in the river and I don't my reflexes enough to get it.", so she just flat-out came and got me early as a treat. It was so nice because there's a bigger age gap between me and my mom than most of my peers, so playing video games for the first time at 40+ was a challenge for her, but AC was relaxing enough that she could otherwise keep up. I moved out almost 3 years ago and one of my first big purchases with my own money was to buy her a Switch and New Horizons.
Honestly I'm so glad he touched on the deep emotional connection that the original game had for so many people. It hit me personally like a ton of bricks because I'm definitely one of them lol

New Horizons removed a lot of the goofiness and edginess I always saw as a part of the Animal Crossing experience: Blathers no longer tells you how to cook the fish you catch, villagers almost never have any sort of conflict, the cheesy and cartoony furniture sets are mostly gone, and many of the goofy and offbeat NPCs are gone.
I’m really, really happy for the folks who love the game; it just doesn’t really feel like Animal Crossing to me anymore.

I played the gamecube AC yesterday, and I got sent running around 7 villagers trying to find a gsmeboy, until a chicken just got pissed at me and refused to talk AT ALL!!!!
So I get distracted and come back 30 minutes later, and he's blocked up in the middle of another favor, and I can't even ask about the first I wanted from him!
So then I get the new favor accomplished, and randomly bumped into one of the characters I ALREADY ASKED ABOUT(and they said they let a friend borrow it) and they just gave it to me then(NOT EVEN THE ONE I WAS LOOKING FOR AT THAT POINT!)
And I fucking love that unnecessary frustration the characters bring lol

I'll never forget being 5 years old playing Animal crossing for the first time on the gamecube. I couldn't read yet so my mom would read everything out loud for me. I remember her laughing at how mean the villagers were too. One time late at night, around midnight, I finally finished my job at Tom Nooks (neither me or my mom knew that we had to meet the mayor 😂) I remember the two of us dancing and laughing, I was so happy to finally get to truly play the game after two weeks of running around like an idiot hahaha. She even called me in sick from school the next day so I could sleep in.
Over the years I have played every animal crossing entry since the first and always told her about it and showed her my progress. When new horizons came out I was always sending her progress pictures of my island. She never played a video game in her life but somehow animal crossing was something dear to both of our hearts. She passed away last year on Christmas Eve from a freak accident and every time I get a letter from "mom" it hits me hard. Something about the game will always feel a bit empty without her now.

I think the core reason for the creation of the original game is something that is really missing from New Horizons. I know that the multiplayer isn't talked about much but it created a magical connection between my siblings and cousin. My cousin rented a room from my parents but worked late often. We'd communicate through the game by sending letters, leaving messages on the board, or just begging my mom to let us stay up to show our cousin some cool thing we found. It was a magical adventure that unfolded with exploration and time. It fostered a connection and sense of exploration. I will forever remember it for this.

The multi-player had a certain experience that I never really had till that game. The fact that you all could share a town or have seprite towns and they would still effect eatch other was fun. I always thought "mean villagers" weren't there to stand out but for authenticity. Moving to a new town can be a cold and isolating experience. You'll make new friends but you'll also meet people you don't get along with. While the "mean villagers" stand out, the kind villagers definitely exist too (even grumpy and snooty villagers have a hidden sweet side), and the diversity is what makes the villagers feel so real to me. People definitely feel the opposite of this effect as a big complaint with NH is that the villagers feel fake rather than real, as though the game is a glorified dollhouse--far from the point of the original game.
Beyond the 6 main personalities, very unknown are the 6 islander personalities, which have key differences and often feel like completely separate personalities/characters. What's sad is that while people can emulate this game, people rarely can visit the island in the emulator, meaning these unique 6 additional personalities are also being lost to time. Also even if you visit the island, of course you only meet one islander.
    If you're int'd though, here's a code to summon Kapp'n on Dolphin.
    Instructions:
    1. In Dolphin, go to Options->Configuration->then check Enable Cheats
    2. Boot up Animal Crossing, then in Dolphin go to Tools -> Cheat Manager -> AR Code -> Add New Code
    and pop in the code
    04414cd4 38600001
    045756a8 38600001
    3. Reboot the game and Kapp'n will now always appear at the dock. When leaving the island, Kapp'n will ask if you want to "take the island with you" on your GBA, just say no to this.
I'm also logging the islander personalities and their dialogue if anyone's interested.
Thanks for this great video, it was an absolutely awesome in-depth look at this game.

Original animal crossing you could just dink around and there was no pressure of “the best town” except for moving trees around and weeding.

In some interviews, Eguchi says the “communication game” idea was not just with the villagers, but between family members sharing a village and friends with other villages, like these touching stories in this video. Because everyone can interact with the village but not at the same time, the idea is they talk about it after, or with the bulletin board/letters. It's a kind of weird dynamic but it works.
Also, Mr. Totaka was not the composer for the hourly themes, though he probably had influence, he was the sound director. Kenta Nagata did the title and outdoor themes, including the work and hourly themes. Nagata also has worked on such bangers such as Dragon Roost Island from Wind Waker. On the topic, I also must show appreciation for Shinobu Nagata (née Tanaka), who imbued a signature style into the event themes I can only describe as "wacky", and Toru Minegishi, who not only wrote the shop themes used throughout the series but also 65 songs of different genres for K.K. to give out (Totaka arranged the live performances). So yeah, I agree the game's music is really great.

I love this game! Never before has a game captured this feeling of loneliness in a world full of color and surprises.
In the winter, trees would be decorated, snowballs can be rolled to make actual snowmen, igloos by the villagers can be entered and have the loveliest atmosphere! When spring comes along, there's cherry blossom trees everywhere and a beautiful festival! There's stuff like Groundhog Day, or the fortune teller, or the hidden NES games, the strange gyroids, the rare pieces of art, the shady seller who comes in every now and again, the hidden treasure hunts, Nook upgrading his store, the monthly raffle for cool items, Sabel's story, the different postal worker during the evening, the golden tools, the balloon presents, and there's so, so much more to discover! Unlike New Horizons which launched with everything major already revealed, this game left a lot for the player to discover! The makes AC for GameCube a million times more memorable and impactful!
Speaking of impactful, this game really makes me feel. Sometimes, I am in my house all alone and I just hear train tracks off in the distance. Along with that there's the town bell that plays, but not many outside noises, giving me that impression that this is a town in the sticks, often quiet and sorta cozy, but also a little lonely. You start off the game with an empty house and you really must work hard to turn your house into a little sanctuary. Never before has a game felt more real. The characters even felt pretty real too. Sometimes they were overdramatic and overzealous, but there were more quiet times with them as well, where they seemed to actually like you and care. Sure, this was certainly a simple form of life, but the fact that it told the actual time made the game feel like it was really real life. It was just simply incredible!
This is a game with a lot of heart, it'll make you feel lonely, it'll make you feel angry, it'll make you feel comfort, and it'll make you surprised in both the best and worst ways. Animal crossing New Horizons is my least favorite game that I’ve ever played. It’s not even a bad game, but it just breaks my soul to see such a bastardization of one of my favorite games of all time! It truly stings. There’s still so much potential to improve what’s already here, but Nintendo will not do it the way Animal Crossing is going. I want a game where the world feels more real, not more artificial...

I remember going into a tent one of my villagers set up for the first time and playing some “games” with them. I had 95,000 bells in my pocket, which took 5 year old me so much time to get. The villager gave me 2 cards. If I pick the right one I’d get a prize. If I pick the wrong one, they get all the money in my pocket. That’s right. ALL OF IT! It was a terrifying moment for young me. I wanted to go back but I had to make the choice.
I choose wrong and lost all of my money.
Safe to say that after that whenever I went into a tent, I’d dump all of my stuff outside so I’d never have to experience that pain again.

Back then it was a little harder to prove something was real and it took longer for people to get that information out. Honestly this is such a solid video. I miss animal crossing gamecube so much, it definitely has such an air of mystery to it. The conversations I found weren't ever as repetitive as new horizons. There wasn't much online about it so you'd just explore and get surprised by small events all the time, and even with the money cheatcode, it would still take you hundreds of hours to pay off your debt, so you'd just resort to selling fish and fruit. It felt like you were striving for something. Getting furniture was more difficult, which made the reward of it so much greater. The soundtrack has stuck with me forever, while the other games have faded into nothing mostly.
I could get over 1 million bells in new horizons in a single day just doing the stalk market turnips and selling a few pieces of furniture. It's just been collecting dust for me lol. Seems more like the sims for creatives making nice towns and honestly, at that point just separate the games or do better integrating both play styles. Make the town interesting again, make the npc's more real. A little bit of sass was so fun.

This video was just recommended to the right person.
Man, as a fan that started with gamecube, it really hurts me to see what they have done with new horizons... It doesn't feel the same. I does not MAKE me feel the same way. I liked the simplicity and the logic in Gamecube, and it managed to carry itself to new leaf... But new horizons just feels disingenuous to me, like it was made specifically to banish all of the animal crossing from animal crossing. I still like new horizons, but hearing people talk about Population Growing and remembering it myself... Makes me glad to have started way back then!
That said: You didn't mention Retro TV's sound on the music portion and for that you must be punished. Though it is not up to me to say what that punishment might be.

I grew up with this game. The villagers came and gone but one always stuck around. I booted my original GameCube up this year and he was still there. Tom the blue grumpy cat. Even when I time traveled 20 years further he never left.
This game has the best soundtrack, the mean villagers are so good, resetti was so memorable, the furniture sets are best. The journal. The nes games. Also BB shirt for life. I'm so sad that every game Is a stripped version of the last one especially new horizons.
It feels so empty especially now that the devs stopped updating it for some reason.
The original is so good I miss it always. So special.

But it's nice to see appreciation for the first game and all it's eccentricities. my first experiences to many things like famous paintings/statues, fish and bugs, and good portion of nes games that I would've never known about otherwise. My brother and I rented Animal Crossing from Hollywood Video in like 2002 (not sure the exact year, but I was like seven, he was like five) and became obsessed with collecting items and expanding our houses, the museum, etc. Soon after, we begged our parents to buy us a copy and I think we got it for Christmas later that year. I remember the first time we met K.K. and we were so confused about how to get him to give us music because we kept putting real song names instead of the songs that the villagers had. Lol.

I was in 6th grade when this game came out and one thing that I don't see mentioned often, if ever in videos for this game is the hype and excitement that was generated for it before release. You showed the commercials as mentioned, they were strange and didn't do a good job of showing what the game was. But Nintendo Power had a 3 issue spread talking about the game. That's 3 issues in a row hyping it up and I remember reading these over and over again because I was so intrigued and excited for this game to release. I ended up loving it and playing it for over a year almost every day. I've played every main title in the series ever since and have gotten so many hours of enjoyment out of it. In my opinion, it deserves to be considered a core series in the Nintendo roster of games.

Wild world was my first back in the day, I know I have thousands upon thousands of hours into that game its still my gold child. I got the gamecube one back in 2018 cause I wanted to start a new animal crossing but I didnt want to restart a file, and the gamecube one helped me heal from a really nasty breakup and the next year the gamecube one also helped me cope with my brother dying in the hospital (he lived, thankfully:) ) I know thats a bit dark stuff but it was like a little light. 2 days after I got the game the meteor shower event happened and I just remember sitting and listening to the music and it reminded me everything will be ok. And the different fun events in the gamecube also gave me so much to look forward to, it's such a gem.

But even as a kid I never minded Resetti, I thought it was so cool that Nintendo put someone like him in the game that could make consequences that drastic. He's one of my all time favorite characters and I've been sad to see him dialed down and then fired in the newer entries.

I agree with localization being the main culprit of how the series has changed. I think what really makes GC version so memorable is just how Japanese it was. These Japanese developers made a game just for themselves rooted in traditional Japanese folklore, society, and foolishness and we westerners were lucky enough to have that translated for us. Even if they did make an effort to make it more palpable for Americans, it's still very quirky and Japanese. As the series got more popular I think Nintendo felt they had to make it more "international" and a lot of the unique Japanese humor and quirkiness was pulled back

This game certainly is an experience that is much different from the other Animal Crossings. I played this game all the time when I was younger but have barely played at all in the past 5 years. Recently I decided to start a new town, record it, and upload it to UA-cam. And in the month since that’s started, I’ve truly come to appreciate how different this game’s experience is. It really is something that every Animal Crossing fan should try at some point.
The features that were removed from the later games such as the raffle are very refreshing because it always gives something to look forward to. The stupid things that your villagers can do when you don’t want them to can be annoying, but also very interesting. And while some of the villagers can be complete D-bags, the dynamic between the nice and sweet villagers and the mean and angry villagers really gives a strong sense of immersion that you are living in a town just going along for the ride.

It's not just about how rude and qwerky the characters were, but also how you could develope your relationship with them. Also I have to note how natural it was. No meters, no levels, just friendship.

About how slow it is to make money in this game, I suggest growing a bunch of foreign fruit trees and stocking up on a full inventory of fruit, including filling up a bunch of empty letters for extra slots. Plug in your GBA to your Gamecube/Wii (this can be done in Dolphin too with GBA emulation but it's a bit complicated) and visit the island. Drop all your fruit there and save your island data to your GBA before leaving the island. On the GBA, move the cursor to the villager's house and guide them with the cursor by pressing A on spots of land close to them not occupied with items. They will pick up fruit along the way and will start to drop money after eating a few fruits. You can make about 30,000 bells from this. Keep in mind island villagers have one fruit they dislike so they may not give money for the fruit you place on the island. Enjoy your moneys!

Back in 2007 my dad came to my sister and I saying “here is the new paper Mario for your Wii, but they also sent this other game for free as a promotion??” And it was Animal Crossing: Population Growing for GameCube.
That moment changed my life forever. I remember being 11 and being like “ok this looks like a weird game, you just live your life with animals???” But it quickly became my sister and I’s favorite game and a source of fighting when we wanted to play at the same time.

I grew up with a gamecube in my earlier childhood and got animal crossing used when I was 5 and was hooked. I've come back to this version specifically numerous times over the course of 15 years and it never loses its charm. I've been playing it every day this summer while I've been home from college. This game transcends time for me. Every day I talk to all of my villagers despite minimal in-game rewards but their dialogue is always worth it. It's refreshing letting go of the collectionist mindset I developed during the later games and truly just existing for a little bit in a virtual world. I'm so glad I still have the original hardware to play the game.
