- Despite Russians having an overwhelming advantage in numbers and technical equipment of their aircraft, Ukrainians continue to defend their skies. The hero of this episode, who goes by the callsign Sabre, has been quite successfully fighting the enemies since the first days of the full-scale invasion, considering he shot down a number of enemy aircraft. this is something that will actually make a difference over time. at the moment ukraine can only use the AGM-88 in the programmed mission mode for area suppression however with F-16s they will be able to detect radiation signatures, identify them by type and launch at them. also this will seriously help pilots get an idea of the density of air defence in a area.

Yeah same. Especially claims about jets flying 5-10 hours every day. I'm no expert but I feel like their readiness rates would be truly abysmal if they kept that up for two years and counting. Soviet era MiG-29s had very limited service life, as low as 2000 hours if various online sources are to be believed. The Russians were able to add another 2000-4000 hours to their MiGs through an extensive structural overhaul program, and perhaps Ukraine did something similar as well. But still, if even half their jets were regularly flying 10 hours a day they would quickly come up against those service life limitations. Not to mention the maintenance difficulties involved in keeping planes in the air that much.

These Ukrainian pilots are heroes.
What worries me about this video is that it sounds like they often have to move to various airfields when they're targeted. However, the F16 needs pristine airfields because it has an air intake close to the ground. The engine is particularly vulnerable to being damaged from debris entering the air intake. Mig29 is especially robust because it has auxillary air intakes on top of the wings to prevent debris from entering the intakes. Su27 has intake screens to also reduce the risk of debris entering the engines.
F16 is a great plane, but I worry that Ukrainians will have a hard time maintaining air strips and clearing them of debris to protect F16 during takeoff and landing. The amount of work required will mean that it will be hard to maintain large numbers of air strips for use with F16.
Sweden's Gripen planes would be a better fit for Ukraine because they have Y-duct air intakes higher off the ground, and they're modern planes that support long-range meteor air-to-air missiles + advanced EW jamming while being cheaper to maintain and operate than F16. They could be used with Ukraine's current air strip conditions, which means they could be moved around quite a bit in the same way that Ukraine has moved their Su27s and Mig29s (as noted in this video). F16 will require more careful mission planning, and it will probably be harder to use F16 with bases closer to the front lines.
F16 will still be very useful and capable, but I wish Ukraine had a dozen Gripens as well.
The more, the merrier. And yes, the points you make about FOD damage to F16s is absolutely correct. Bases typically have FOD walks on taxiways and runways multiple times a day, as I understand it. Once it's in the air, though, it will be the Russian pilots worst nightmare. Twin engine fighters are typically less likely to suck up crap off runways, in general, as the intakes are usually further forward, and much higher off the ground.
@@MrJdsenior Well, Gripen are single engine, but they have a Y-duct air intake with air inlets at the upper sides of the fuselage. So they have the efficiency of a single-engine jet while also reducing the probability of FOD.
I totally agree with you that F16s in the air will be very capable, but I just worry that it will be harder to get them in the air and keep them in the air at multiple locations vs jets like Mig29 + Su27 that have higher air intakes. And again, Gripen have high air intakes like the Su27.
According to Sweden's official statements, giving Gripens is in the plans but now allies mainly focus on preparing everything for F16s

Regardless of your bias you cant deny its incredible that they still fly and have some of their original planes this many years into the war when other nations with more have been wiped clean within weeks, even without Foreign support those planes would've lasted way longer than anyones predictions.
Actually a large part of the original fleet was canabalized for parts. No plane stays in service without parts and many hours of maintenance.
