Hello everyone! I hope you are well and it is good to be back. Today's video is on decorating with dark woods and traditional furniture. I call this style 'Refreshed Heritage' as it offers an opportunity to refresh and re-envision how we can decorate with brown wooden furniture across a variety of design styles. I hope you find these tips helpful! xx
I enjoy all of your videos, and this especially. Aside from the educational content, the music, your soothing voice, and the choices of photos is so relaxing to experience. Almost meditative. In a fast paced world, I feel that your method of delivery is so needed. Almost like sitting down with a friend and a pot of tea.
I love dark furniture. I have gone back to it. I love wood. Totally enjoyed this one. Beautiful furnishings and decor. Thank you, I know it was a lot of work to put together for us. Peace!
Hello Lee, I have done the same! I used to paint alot of brown wood pieces, however I would rather admire the grain and texture and work these pieces in with my decor. So glad you really enjoyed this video. Have a great week! Suzie x
This was so classy, and did not attempt to devalue inherited beautiful family heirlooms. Such things are irreplaceable, and thank you for honouring the true "sustainability" of things that are timeless and classic and classy if given the inspiration of a trained beautiful "eye" for how such Grand Ladies, and Gentlemen of the olde dark wood should be "dressed" to make us all smile, rather than groan. I loved every one of these tips, and particularly your identification of the temperature/undertone hints which enable accents to be used to blend with other timbers in the room. Thank you so much. This was the answer to my prayers for help ! GOD Bless ya heart.
Thank you for your kind words! I'm thrilled to hear that you found the tips helpful and that they resonated with you. Honoring the beauty of family heirlooms while adding a touch of inspiration is truly special. Suzie xx
I could never bring myself to paint a piece of beautiful real hardwood furniture, especially if it were antique or heirloom from a family member. If it were damaged, I'd opt for restoration to as close to the original as possible. As you have illustrated in this video so well, it is very possible to style these beautifully timeless pieces without ruining them with these trends that come and go. Excellent video! I especially appreciated the information on the different types of woods. I learned a few I hadn't already previously known. I have to get some burl furniture now. It's SO BEAUTIFUL! ❤
I couldn't bring myself to paint over such beautiful furniture unless it was damaged. Love the content of this video, it inspired me to be more creative around these tones. Thank you🙏
I agree P Man! I find a lot of the time the furniture looks better in the beginning before it has been painted. Often it just hasn't found the right home yet or area of the house to be placed. However, I can see the appeal especially for beachy or boho houses with painted white and mostly bleached timbers xx
Hi Living Good, I am happy you resonate with this style. I appreciate it more and more over time, especially the grounded look the browns give as you say. Glad you enjoyed the video xx
I am so happy to see fine furniture featured here. I inherited and have purchased only fine hardwood furniture for my home. It looks fresh on the right surroundings and complimentary fabrics.
Hello Judy, thank you for watching! Your home sounds lovely with the collections of fine hardwood furniture. You are so right, the right surroundings and textures can completely transform the look and feel of these traditional pieces xx
Hi Suzie, so many beautiful things and ideas in this video. I have Georgian style so now I can start mixing a bit more to elevate the look of my rooms. Haven't seen burl that much lately but I do enjoy the pieces you show in this video. My grandma had this type of wood in her bedroom. As a child a was fascinated by the color and its grain. Thank you !!
Hi Martha, I am happy you found the visuals beautiful and the ideas helpful! How great to have a Georgian style home, has that always been your design preference? Lovely to hear about your memory of admiring the furniture in your grandma's home. I think burl wood might be making a comeback as I am slowly seeing it pop up in furniture and decor xx
Quite common to have Georgian furniture in a colonial style home in the US. When I moved to Europe I brought along most of our American Georgian style furniture made of Cherry. Since then have found some small mahogany pieces but here prices are very high in comparison to US. Nevertheless, I love this style and with the help of your videos try to make it look a bit more modern and practical. Have a nice weekend Suzie and please continue to share with us your wonderful ideas. 🤗
I weep for the woods ruined by instagram and youtube trends. The only basis for them being painted is the fear of the paintbrush wielder being seen to own anything vaguely yellow, orange or warm toned!!!! I hope Lonefox has the courage to bring warm into vogue. Praying for the antiques!!!!
I have a large mid-century modern walnut credenza (about 7 feet long). I want to go with neutrals and whites, but I love the credenza. I also like the warm neutral design ideas video you did. That gave me new ideas and introduced me to boucle furniture. I've been pricing a boucle sofa, and have a large flokati rug. It's coming together.
It sure does sound like it's coming together for you! I love walnut as a timber and it will pair beautifully with lovely natural whites and adding the boucle sofa will add a contemporary touch! Happy decorating! Suzie x
This is a very unique take on Japandi interior design. I see the inspiration, but it’s still both modern & traditional like his clients wanted. Love it ❤!
Hello Armando, I hope you are having a great day. I also share the love for antiques and vintage furniture, so this style of decorating is close to my heart as well. Thank you for watching xx
Hi Lorene, thank you for watching. I am happy you found the tips helpful. Yes I love a balance of painted furniture alongside natural timber. I tend to buy the painted furniture and keep the original browns rather than painting those as I find it offers a lovely contrast xx
Love all your videos. This is what I have been looking for images to get ideas how to style things up. . Just wondering about the antique knobs on a wood side board . In natural wood. They have round rings. So maybe some hints where to purchase things would be helpful in your videos. Your soothing voice and how you packed everything in these videos in a timely manner is brilliant. Thank you.
Hi Nina, thank you for your kind words. When it comes to sourcing, I am also a retailer, so the items pictured in our original photos are of our retail stores in Australia. When it comes to other designers, it could be worth using some descriptive keywords online and seeing what comes up xx
I have a 1906 with unpainted wood and like a simplified Vic style but want to create unified spaces and design my bedroom with med toned clear blue with green accents. Your video was so helpful! Thank you!
Good afternoon Ms. suzie…..grateful for your videos . I love to mix my woods , which at times can be challenging.I love and appreciate alll furniture especially antiques , I think they ground a room . Love from sunny Florida ☀️☀️💕
Hello Monique! So lovely to read you are watching from Florida. Mixing woods can be challenging at times but definitely worth it for a more lived in interior. I can imagine your home must be beautiful xx
Hello! Thank you for your comment. I agree, it is wonderful to incorporate a variety of woods in the home as they add a lovely, natural feel to the home xx
Hi! I love dark wood furniture and choose dark walnut color when refinishing. Most all my furniture are antique. I don’t have an overly decorated house with Knick-knacks, but do use antiques as regular items. I’m not emotionally attached to them, if they get a scratch or nick, I keep a stain pen in my kitchen drawer, if they break I keep wood glue. Only a few pieces have I stripped to totally re-finish, usually I wood putty and spot stain, then use urethane. I don’t look at value so much as presentation and easy to use. My worst piece is still superior to a new piece of furniture and it’s fake wood.
It sounds like you have a wonderful appreciation for quality and craftsmanship! Your approach to refinishing and maintaining your antique furniture is practical and ensures they remain both functional and beautiful. Your home must have a timeless elegance with those dark wood pieces. Keep cherishing those treasures! xx
Another quick tip is all my furniture I have given a coat of urethane. This makes them washable and doesn’t leave water rings. I also use cloth doilies, the antique hand made ones, under every lamp or house plant. It prevents scratches and looks nice. After washing furniture, I go back and use Orange-Glow, it makes them look freshly waxed and makes the room smell nice. When we had new windows installed, I requested the dark walnut color, it makes looking outside easier believe it or not. Then found online very fancy lace curtains made of 100% polyester so washing them is easy, no iron. They compliment the dark windows and furniture!
Thank for this amazing video , you make me sou happy every time i watching you video . I always find some tip ideas🥰 to incorporate into my home decor❤❤❤
Hello Teresa! Might I recommend starting with smaller accents throughout the home. I find a lovely rattan tray, fireside basket or even a napkin holder can be a beautiful touch xx
Thanks for an interesting and educational video. The run-down of wood types and the chart of tones were helpful. Solid wood is easier to sand and re-stain than pieces with thin veneer. I don't have any compunctions about painting the latter.
Hello Gina! You are so welcome. I am happy to hear you found the insight to the different dark woods helpful :) Do you have more natural woods or painted furniture pieces? xx
..once I heard in one of these silly TV shows “brown is down” I can’t disagree more. I have beautiful pieces at home, they are classic and timeless. Today’s video is to die for! I love you mentioned the grandfather clocks, I have a French Mobier, gorgeous!
Hello A-Complished, I hope you have been well. I definitely disagree as well! It is timeless and beautiful and how special that you have such as gorgeous clock in your home. Have a great weekend xx
There’s nothing more elegant and organic than the beauty of natural wood and I will never understand painting over it. Save the paint for cheap fake wood or pieces where the wood is damaged. Such a waste of a dwindling commodity.

I’ve always loved dark furniture. In a day and time where people want to paint everything it makes me cringe inside. I’m thinking do you people not understand how beautiful this wood is. You’re right the painting of a piece of furniture actually devalues it. I appreciate the furniture in its natural state and try to incorporate that In my color scheme. Another element and decorating is glass. I shop at thrift stores antique stores etc. and I see so much glass where of all types being sold for pennies on the dollar. And I’m thinking these are so beautiful and no one likes them. I guess in a way I’m a realist and love it for what it is and I wouldn’t change anything about the wood Or hesitate to buy vintage glassware
Hello! I also love dark furniture and understand with all the points you made. Ooo yes I love all the beautiful sets of vintage glasses and silverware too! Do you usually look out for other items too? Xx
@@suzieandersonhome oh yes! Right now I’m collecting vintage fire king and Pyrex baking dishes with their lids. This is another item that many young people these days don’t appreciate they want something brand new. I also look for tea pots. I find bits of art to hang on the wall and figurines made in Japan. There are so many under appreciated items that are still useful. Looking for useful vintage items is one of my greatest pastimes. It’s like going through a museum but you can buy the display.
Loving your channel and especially this video as I have a home full of dark woods. But I would give my first born child (if I had one) to have that clothespin bench! Can it be purchased somewhere?

I agree Linda. I have to admit this was a time in my younger years that I found brown 'boring'! I look back on some of the pieces I painted and cringe! Live and learn! I now adore the patina, richness and beauty these pieces bring. Suzie x

I am in group chats on others, and this doesn't happen!
@@ginafriend1690 I am not too sure what to do as I have been replying to you and when I reply to others in the chat they are able to see? Hopefully we can resolve it! Xx
Are these photos of projects you have accomplished?
Dear Debra, all of our videos are a mix of our own designs and photos of other designers work, all of which are credited at the bottom left or right hand side of each photo so you can explore their work more if you desire :) Hope this helps xx
Good good ideas. Cannot understand the trend nowadays that whitewash everything althou the original wood are still good n beautiful.
Hello Deca! Yes there is definitely a timeless beauty in original woods, especially the craftsmanship xx

Please don't paint valuable wood or antiques . Use an inexpensive find for painting!
I agree Linda. I have to admit this was a time in my younger years that I found brown 'boring'! I look back on some of the pieces I painted and cringe! Live and learn! I now adore the patina, richness and beauty these pieces bring. Suzie x
NEVER PAINT REAL WOOD! Wood has grain for a reason, use stain or clear poli to bring it out.
Why does the narrator always have to have some foreign acctn. Why can't they just speak English with no accent or airs and graces in their words.
There is no such thing as no accent. You might simply have a preference for one over the other x
