      The mailing addresses (mail in general as you talked about in your video) are crazy there. Also many people would be surprised to know that Nicaragua is one of the safest places in Central America and actually has way less serious crime than most cities in Canada or the USA.

    • @BucketListTravellers
      @BucketListTravellers  3 роки тому

      @@ChrisTovahsAmazingAdventures Absolutely correct on all fronts! Nicaragua is safest country to live in, in our view, as well. The people here are wonderful and there is a strong sense of community. You raise a good point re safety in US. We found that murder rates in some US cities are as bad or worse as the most dangerous of the Central American cities (none of which are in NIcaragua btw).

    Been living in Nicaragua for 7 years. Absolutely love it! Fortunately my mother was born and raised in Rivas. When I moved here from the USA in 2014, I was automatically a citizen of Nicaragua. I now have dual citizenship between the USA and Nicaragua. One drawback on deciding where to live would be water service. Most of the country does not have water service 24/7. Fortunately I did a lot of research and ended up moving to a small town south of Granada that literally never has issues with water, electric or cable/WiFi. I don't ever plan to leave this country.

      Hi Bernard, you have the best of both worlds! Where is the town that you are living in? It sounds great! We really love that you can drink the tap water in Nicaragua. In Australia and the US, it is easy to take that for granted. Thanks for watching!

    Yes, it gets loud in Granada, not so much in many other cities. The most surprising thing about living in Nica is how kind the locals are, how good the fruits and vegetables are, how cheap you can live well, and btw the cost per kwh for electricity is the same as in Florida. I just learned to live without air conditioning, only using fans and my electric bill runs about $14 per month in Granada.

    • @BucketListTravellers
      @BucketListTravellers  3 роки тому +1

      Hear hear! We completely agree with you on all counts. The cost of electricity in Sydney Australia is the same as here as well. We also have lived without airconditioning during our time here and it is certainly managable. Well done on only paying $14 a month! We were around $40 a month in Granada.

      Hi Xian, its a mix. For every hotel/hostel that is still closed, you can certainly find hotels and airbnbs that are open. We are planning a weekend trip to San Juan Del Sur and have found plenty of options available. Most restaurants in Granada are open as well, with covid precautions in place. That said, I don't think the land borders are open if you are planning to hop over to Honduras or Costa Rica and I believe that you need to take a covid test to come into the country, as well as fork out $150 for another test if you want to leave the country via plane. Some food for thought.

Even housekeeping 6 days a week. Also I take a taxi and ask the pricem,, they all say FREE. Yup, they have me figured out. By not charging me I pay them better than what they would ask for. @@BucketListTravellers True. I still keep three horses boarded on a farm halfway between Leon and Playa Grande. With the Nicaraguan owner I had planned to build a treehouse campground. Poor guy only has an income of $100 a month. He's honest as they come. My problem was no vehicle or driver's license. But found I could get one for 4300 bypassing all the formalities.. Here is Costa Rica still no driver's license as I do not have residency. And bypassing the system not an option. I can't get a license in the US as I have no State of Residency. and the rest of the bureaucracy. Funny thing in Managua was the hottest part of day was around 11 AM. Following that a cool breeze came off the lake. My wife is a Costa Rican University Professor and in fact was born in Nicaragua. Her parents fled to Costa Rica with here in 1983 when she was 8. Thus employment as well as even volunteer work was impossible there. Long as I don't talk I get away as a native in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. I understand Spanish and get away with nods, si, no, bueno amd malo.. I walked and biked all over Managua day and night the whoile time there. And definitely safe. Many neighborhoods home owners sit in the front of their house with a shotgun or AK to be suse the neighborhood is safe. My place near the US Embassy was only a bit over 200 meters from where President Ortega lived. And I would shoot skeet with some of his guards from time to time. I furnished the shells and clays, they furnished the shotguns.. Met President Ortega and his wife. An artist was a nephew and made the introduction. Pretty modest house, simply the quarters of a field grade army officer (major to Colonel).
      I should mention. Best way to find housing is a taxi driver. They know neighborhoods better than anyone. In each house I got that is what I did. The offer always $100 if they found a place I rented. The one that found the place I now had I offered $200. And the end result was I paid him $500, a wrist watch, utility tool-knife, cellphone and piezo electric cooling chest. The previous house was $200 a month and owner wanted to raise it to $300 and didn't like my gardening. Well he got what he wanted. The house has remained empty since I left over 2 years ago and the yard devoid of vegetation. When it rains the roof leaks.
      Get a girlfriend or the reverse, always put it in the rental agreement TWO ADULTS ONLY. Otherwise they may invite all their relatives to live with you.
      Costa Rica can be just as cheap as Nicaragua. But for that you must live far far away from all foreigners, especially Americans and Canadians. That applies to all Latin Countries. And I have rented only from Native locals or Cubans. Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua Cubans own many maybe most rentals. A perk is the owner brings some great food time to time.
      The longer I am away from the US the better it gets.
      Lastly the MegaPali and the other big supermarkets are all owned by Walmart.

    Absolutely loved this video! As a Nicaraguan I found the part about the fireworks very funny, and wanted to answer. As you may have noticed Nicaragua is mostly of Catholic/Christian religion ... the “fireworks” that are lit during the day are called cohetes (which means rockets) are mostly lit during masses, processions, and holy times , and are used for the loud *boom* Im not sure where exactly the tradition came from but it sure is important for some reason.... they are different then typical colorful fireworks which we call “ pólvora China” which would translate to “Chinese gunpowder” that one is known for the colors and is used for celebrations and special holidays.

    Your comments about the noise and live bands got my attention. I had some indigenous people from Central America living next door for a while. They would party in the backyard with brass and drums instruments. Very inappropriate for a quite California neighborhood. They moved after a while and it was a relief for the whole neighborhood. They were ok people but just weren't compatible with the rest of us. Also they pretended not to speak Spanish. I wondered if this is true or a put on.

    • @BucketListTravellers

      Noise/fiestas/bands/fireworks is definitely a strong part of Central American culture and it can be a little bit jarring when other cultures who aren't as outwardly expressive encounter this or vice versa. It took us a little getting used to and now we can now sleep through 5am fireworks!

    Street addresses in Nicaragua are basically something like this:
    John Smith
    From the Old Market, 2 blocks South, half a block East.
    Granada
    And if the market burns down, is torn or changes use, the address adds (where it used to be):
    From where the Old Market used to be, 2 blocks South, half a block East.

    Hi guys, quick question since you're expat there, what do you think of tourists coming in now, while most of the world is still on pause because of covid? A friend and I would like to come in February for a for months. We understand it's quite irresponsible to be traveling right now but for instance, for me, there's nothing else I can do.
    I've been back to France (from being 'stuck' in Sri Lanka) last August bc of a family emergency, I looked for work, etc, ended up finding something but the winter season is canceled and I'm a cook so no one is hiring.
    Anyway, I'd love to come to Nicaragua, volunteer, surf, pass the time until I can work again. Would you think it's okay with the right measures, gel + masks all the time or is it badly regarded? I know it's technically okay because the borders are open, but what do people think? How is life for foreigners atm? For ex, in Sri Lanka it was pretty great, people are really friendly so as long as we were respecting lockdown and everything, Sri Lankan were still happy to be doing business

    • @BucketListTravellers
      @BucketListTravellers  3 роки тому

      Hi Annick, there are pros and cons. Pros being that Nicaragua is a beautiful country, covid experience here is mild and it isn't a densely populated country. Life as an expat here is good and safe, however we have been limiting ourselves to Granada and have not been travelling around. The economy is really weak and you would be helping by visiting. There are hotels and plenty of restaurants open. There is no lockdown, however it is common practice to wear masks in public and in certain businesses (e.g. supermarkets). Cons being that the land borders are still closed and the only way in or out is by air. That said, only Avianca are flying from Miami/El Salvador and we heard that all January flights were cancelled. So be prepared to get 'stuck' here for longer than expected. A covid test is required to come into and to leave the country. There has been a surge in cases since Christmas reported in the news. I hope this all helps with your decision. Good luck.

    What's the cost of living? How much can a single person live in Nica?

    • @BucketListTravellers
      @BucketListTravellers  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Omar, that will vary a lot depending on the standard of living that you're after and what area of Nicaragua you're living in. It is one of the cheapest countries to live in Central America and as a rough estimate it would be maybe 3 times cheaper than living in the US. We've had a bit of interest in this topic, so we'll look to answer this question in more detail in a coming video. To make sure you don't miss out on this, make sure you subscribe :)

    • @mikerivas9091

      Hi Omar, I'll give you ballpark figures. My neighbor rents her house out for $350/monthly in an upper middle class home in the outskirts of the city 24/7 security and gated community. Groceries at the Supermarket can run you between $50-$200 depending on your eating/spending habits. The average energy bill with moderate use of AC will be around $50/monthly. Gas is a bit expensive and you're looking at around $50/monthly traveling into the city and out. So with about $750 a single person can live a decent middle class life (assuming of course no car notes and any other emergency). If you want to live a more simple lifestyle then you can take away from the $750. And if you want a more luxurious lifestyle then add on to the $750...
