@@NCHProductions in my home and generation, Ultraman was just a random thing I came across while web surfing. I think Tiga's fight against Ligatron was the first one I ever saw?
You know, I never realized how ridiculous the Birdon thing was until you described it. The best part is there's nothing special about this monster. It's not a god, ancient evil, universe destroying beast, an ultimate bioweapon, or really any backstory. It just woke up one day, said "Your free trial of existence has expired" to Taro, and Zoffy, ate alot of people, and then got trapped in a volcano. They didn't even kill it. This random ass chicken did all of that, what a Chad!
Fittingly, Birdon is one of the easier monsters to unlock in Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher and it turns out to be one of the most obscenely powerful monsters in competitive play.
To be fair, Birdon more or less got lucky, both in-universe and out-universe. Taro was getting double-teamed by Birdon and Kemjila. We see 2 fights where Taro 1 v 1'd Birdon and he was easily dominating her. As for Zoffy, Zoffy was apparently holding back (can't use his M87 ray out of fear it may destroy the planet or whatever) and (apparently) Zoffy was supposed to beat Birdon in the original draft, but because his suit caught on fire, they decided to have him lose to Birdon instead.
I just discovered Ultraman and have been diving into Taro and I thank you for making this video my friend. The production, passion, and editing that went into this is so evident. Thank you for taking the time to make this. Take care & be well
10:12 silly Birdon, you just need to fly over that fence! Edit: Taro is one of my main favorite Ultra, and one of the reasons why I like him being his beam plus when he shout his beam name. I especially like when he does this in Ultraman Fighting Evolution Rebirth. And just like when I commented in your community post when this video was available in your Patreon, Birdon is one of my favorite Taro kaiju (Tyrant too). Even though it is just a pre historic bird (which already makes me like it), it manage to kill both Taro and Zoffy, and I'm impressed how ZAT or Taro didn't killed it, even though it killed and ate a lot of people. Edit2: Now I have remembered, I got disappointed that there is no Taro kaiju in Taiga (I haven't watched the show yet, but I know which kaiju and alien appears in the show, thanks to the Ultraman Wiki). The closest thing we got of a Taro kaiju is Gorothunder, which is a homage to 3 Taro kaiju (Live King, Dorobon and Mochiron). Damn, not even my beloved bird (Birdon) or Tyrant appears in that show.
I used to adore Ultraman Taro as a kid since he has some moves which are both powerful and deadly like Ultra Dynamite as in canon, Taro's has a special kind of heart that can regenerate his body each time he used Ultra Dynamite but it will weaken him after using it and probably shed a few years off his life. I agreed that the Ultra Brothers teaming up against Alien Templar was dumb since the brothers behaved like jerks to Taro until the end and the worst thing, all of them used the same Taro fly-off voice when they flew back to M78. But then, Tsurabaya was infamous for cutting corners, especially the Showa series. Although I still don't get it at the end of the series Kotaro returned his Ultra badge to Ultra Mother so what happened to Taro's physical body? Does that mean that Taro is actually like a spirit inside the Ultra Badge all this while and when it is finally over, Ultra Mother restored Taro into a physical form? But where is he in Leo's series? Probably never explain since Leo has a smaller budget than Taro and the budget was so bad that they can only afford 5 of the Ultra brothers to appear and Taro got shafted to the sidelines.
I remember hearing somewhere that Ultra Dynamite takes 20 Years off Taro's life. Which explains why he only used it once during the show. I find it hilarious when its used so much in the games on account of that.
I used to watch the original Ultraman on TV reruns back in the Eighties as a kid. I'd never seen another Ultraman until I was a young adult and discovered Taro. I thought to myself, "WTF happened to Ultraman!" I hated it at first. But it had a fascinating charm, and it inspired me to check out the other Ultras. Weirdly enough, Taro has become one of my favorite eras of the franchise.
Very informative. I'm fairly new to the Ultras, having found the Ultra Q disk set a few years ago, and I've been baffled by the show's collective timelines and different series. Your vids are helping me greatly in acquiring that knowledge.
"Tyrant and Birdon are the strongest monsters in the Showa Era." OG Alien Temperor (Man Handled Taro in a one on one fight, something that Tyrant and Birdon failed to do, and holding his own against the OG 6 Ultra Brothers), Margodon (the strongest showa series monster), and Grand King/Juda (tanked the combined Kousen of 5 Ultra Brothers with ease, was beating the 6 OG Ultra Brothers with no effort, and required Taro to fuse in order to win): Are we jokes to you?
The first episode of Taro with that bird Kaiju putting that other Kaiju through it's bellybutton scarred me as a kid. Those bootleg DVDs with Chinese subtitles is how I got introduced to Ultraman that and reruns of Tiga on Chinese television, which didn't come out in China til way later after Tiga aired.
Awesome review man! Lol I'm glad I finally have the context to a lot of the scenes now that you reviewed the series. I also really appreciate you going over the franchise since I would never have the time to watch it myself, keep up the amazing work
I unfortunately don't have too much time on my hands, so when given time I prefer to watch Kamen Rider instead of any other Sentai or Toku series just because I really like the aesthetic. However, I still really love the props, effects, and general vibe of Toku in general, so I really appreciate your analyses of the Ultra series. You make them not only educational in regards to learning about the franchise, but also funny while also not diluting it down to, as you said, "Power Rangers on mushrooms".
As both Ultra-fan & Rider-fan, I actually suggest you to watch *Ultraman Gaia* whenever you have the time. It's one of the most acclaimed Heisei shows from the 90s. Ultraman Gaia show is where *Ultraman Agul* came from: one of the most notable "rival hero" in Heisei era which then inspired other Toku shows (even Kamen Rider) to have a cool/brooding/loner rival. For example, Kamen Rider Knight was heavily inspired by Ultraman Agul.
Fun fact, that bemstar suit (if what the wiki says is true) is actually the original suit! They used the suit from jack was used for astromons then retooled back into bemstar
Man I love this series so much lol its campy its fun its action packed and sometimes it heartwarming and some it can give you great life lessons and it's opening is awesome lol I love this show
This was the og series i watched most recently because I thought it looked stupid. Yet every single time u make a solid critique i found myself thinking “no that makes it better” or “ fuck you that part was cool” i think this has become my favorite ultraman series to watch lol its so fun and out there and wacky
Honestly, looking back at it all, it is wild how incredibly connected the Ultra Series is as a series. Alien Empera (with all of his sick alien drip) only showed up a whole 34 years after Ultraman Taro had his name mentioned, when Ultraman Mebius had to square up against the most powerful antagonist since like, what, Gatanothor from Ultraman Tiga?
idc, the more you point out its flaws the more it consolidates taro as my fav ultra show and a camp masterpiece !! (Also I’d HIGHLY recommend Taro to anyone)
I know of Taro as "The Ultraman that randomly had a cameo in a Kamen Rider Den-O web series" (because of a pun based on the theme naming of Ryotaro's Imajins: Momotaros, Ryutaros, etc.) Like, I know that Toei and Tsuburaya have done several crossovers before, but it was still weird.
Personally I love how absolutely crazy Taro is I watch it when I just want to have a good time and this show is really good I will admit is both goof and a little missed up I will you're retrospective was perfect can't wait to see the next
honestly, when it comes to taiga and its taro homages, i think it all culminates in episode 19. goro thunder is the most showa like kaiju from anything after showa, especially when referring to taro. his design, his personality, his powers, and even the plot of the episode feel super showa. though i do wish they brough back a kaiju like astromons, it was still nice seeing taros bat shit craziness get some love.
came in expecting Ultraman shenanigans and left with Ultra Boobah, hilariously tone-deaf music, and an exploding hero. this true has been Ultraman Taro.
I very much appreciate the showing of the giant turtle hired aliens for murder scene, definitely my favorite screenshot from the show to show to people
Yeah, it’s annoying when people use Power Rangers as a means to judge other Toku in a negative light, not only because of the points you made in the vid, but it makes it seem as if Power Rangers is inherently bad too just because it uses similar techniques that other Toku uses, when it isn’t. Tokusatsu shows and movies can have their quirks and weird moments yes, and can be cheesy, but like you said that doesn’t mean that these shows or movies had no effort into their craft. It isn’t about looking real (and even then, there’s many Toku media that can pull off realism), it’s about entertainment and telling a good story. And in the case of some, selling merch. But seriously, I wish more people would look past the inert cheesiness and admire what’s been pulled off in the media before them. Power Rangers, Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, Godzilla, Gamera and others all have good things to appreciate in how they’re made and present themselves.
19:25 the one in Mebius and Ultra Fight Orb are not weak, but the other, yeah, especially the one in Orb Origin Saga(poor little bird ran away after only one flinch from Dyna)
That horrible song kicking in every time a fight started must have grated on the nerves of Japanese parents who let their kids watch it. Same goes for Zone Fighter.
i looked it up and it actually means “strong/eldest son” in japanese (there’s a few possible ways to read it, but i think this reading matches well w the themes of family in this iteration). the idea of an ultra warrior named after a potato is very funny though
The amount of time zoffy gets beaten is absurd I mean dude your the leader of the ultra brothers you are know to be the strongest ultra brother or something and you are like the yamchan or krilin of ultraman lol
Everybody gangsta till taros theme starts playing then you start running if you don't want to get punched in guts and then explode lol why doesn't use this movie on trigear belila and all the other dark ultras who kicked his butt lol just saying he could win if spams this move
