This was during when anime started becoming a lot more popular and commonplace than Tokusatsu, to the point that TV stations aired anime on the same timeslot as Ultraman 80 to compete with ratings. This trend also affected Kamen Rider Super-1, which also aired at the same year. Fun fact: Ultraman 80 and Kamen Rider Super-1 aired on the same channel (TBS). They also aired on the same day, with Super-1 airing just right after 80's timeslot.
I watched Ultraman 80 when I was around 10 and he remained one of my favourite Ultra of all time. My child-self never saw any flaws, although I did notice the absence of the school setting.
I totally agree with most of this review honestly. 80 does feel like a paint by numbers Ultra show at times. Which is a bit sad because it does feel like there was a pretty sizeable chunk of money put behind this (more than Leo at least). There are some stand out episodes, but there are far more 'meh' ones. I actually like a lot of the monsters in the show. Gamos is way underrated to be truthful. Same goes for Gora. But there are a lot of bland ones like like Gera and Tabra (and I like those guys). 80 is the black sheep of the Showa Ultras that is for sure. If the school setting was not cut from the show, I am sure it would have been totally different. Whether it would be better or worse is up for speculation though. Anyhoo, always appreciate the deep dive looks you do on your videos. Always the highlight of my week to see quality work like this put out for the Ultra series.
Makes me hope and wish Tsuburaya can go all in on the school concept with 80 someday, 80 would've have been Kamen Rider Fourze before Fourze existed! I know Ginga "technically did" New Generation 80 but at a MUCH MORE SMALLER SCOPE.
As much as I wasn't really a fan of 80, I do admit that tribute episode on Mebius was lovely and I consider it my favorite episode from Ultraman in general, at least for now. If I were to comment on exactly why, I guess it was a mix of personal experiences with great writing, I was just fresh off graduating and while school definitely had it's issues, I had so many fond memories looking back that I kinda wish I could travel back to those experiences. When I watched the episode, I really got teary-eyed, not only was it so beautiful and good, but it just really hit me at the right place and time.
Honestly, 80 (and The Ultraman, to an extent) just feels like a hangover from the wild creativity of 70s Showa Ultraman, like bumping into that party kid you knew in college who’s now straight laced with a wife and kids.
Still to me 80 is the most underrated of the Ultra Series I feel like I wish it was given the chance and see it more is not a bad show is in the middle the fights were good and the story is okay I will admit one thing the theme is absolutely awesome and is fun to listen to it sometimes
I know the middle stretch has this reputation for being "Seven, but not as good", but wow the captain telling Takeshi he knows he's 80 is REALLY "Seven, but not as good."
I thought I was the only one who preferred the first set of intro and outro songs Honestly I never understood why ultra shows still do the “whoooa People can’t find out in Ultraman!” Like I think it was only covered once the consequences but other than that, I doubt many shows need to keep doing that due to their tone or something
It's definitely just a weird, arbitrary thing. There's a LOT of that in old showa shows. Weirdly strict status quo that's maintained for no reason other than "That's The Rules!" Even when it wouldn't really affect the way they'd have to write each episode if they mixed it up?
Great review. I think burnout/rehash is unfortunately inevitable for just about every franchise. (Mavel, Star Wars etc.) But I definitely agree that there were a lot of missed opportunities. The death of Emi Chan is lame and they so could've made like a whole love triangle thing with the princess and 80. They definitely should've let the princess team up with 80 and fight more too like you said. Looking forward to your future projects

Jokes aside, yeah I kinda got nothing to say about 80 that you haven't already said better than I could. It exists. One might even call it The Ultraman Series Ever. I was also pretty disappointed by the teacher angle getting ditched entirely, but Yulian in particular felt like a massive disappointment to me. Having the first female Ultra seemed like a really cool moment for the franchise, so I was really let down by her just kind of doing nothing. I kind of have a soft spot for the show, since I just sort of like these strange and mundane shows from the franchise's weird spot between Leo and Tiga. Yeah, that's about all I've got. The vibe I get from this is this show kinda suffered the same fate as Kamen Rider Hibiki, trying to be more unique and because of behind the scenes complications it had to change to adhere to tradition costing it ratings Both also have main protagonists that's are older mentor figures

I must say it is very nostalgic and also awesome video. I used to watched ultraman series religiously when I was young. I mainly watched the heisei ultraman. From Tiga to Mebius the one I most liked is Gaia and Cosmos. I would like to hear your opinion on those two series. Gaia particularly the first show to depict two Ultramans and their rivalry and conciliation very mirrors Dante and Vergil from DMC. While Cosmos is the kindest Ultraman of all who chose to heal monsters rather than instant destruction. I will wait for your retrospective for these two series.
As crazy as its sounds, I've just finished watching the last 15 episodes of Ultraman 80 today on PlutoTV's TokaSHOUTsu Channel. I agree with most of your thoughts about it. In a way, it's dated ( naming yourself after a specific year of all things 1980, as in " Like, OMG, totally goodbye Carter, hello Reagan, Disco DID shucked out of the Grammys, we ain't going to Moscow ( like, the ( gag us with 65 spoons....I mean countries ) Summer Olympics ) 80! "....well, like, almost in a way, my Valley Girl impersonation is slightly off ( BASE! 😅 )..anyway, I did like the concept of Takeshi Yamato as a teacher by day, UGM member on weekends. That didn't last long, and I wished that concept lasted longer, at least until episode 26. And if anyone discovers his identity, he has to go...LITERALLY! The opening theme is catchy as heck, and the closing theme is something straight out of a VHS exercise program, but good. The Dark Ages or the Second Downturn of Ultraman from 1981-96 was zoned out, not even Great ( which was my very first Series I've watched ) or Powered lighten up the load until Tiga CHANGED EVERYTHING, and it was the last of the 50 episode Series run until Tiga brought it back up to speed. Cosmos surpassed it with 65 episodes, Nexus had 37 episodes in 2004-05, Max had 39 episodes, the same as the original series, and Mebius ended the 50 episode run in 2006-07. To me, 80 was good at times, and 😵💫 at times, even his looks are very much average, namely his face. It reminds me of Droopy, like the " You know what, I'm fill in the blanks " kind of face, or in 80's case, neutral outside, infused with emotions inside. The ending was anti climatic, but it did serve its purpose. It took an episode of Ultraman Mebius in 2006 to give a proper salute to 80 and closure 25 years after it ended. But give credit for at least making the Series fun to watch....despite the challenges it faced. Great retrospective of Ultraman 80, dated, but not forgotten. ( If only my record collection didn't gather any dust or mothballs... or worse, turned to vinyl gunk in storage..just saying 😊! ).
Ultraman 80 is definitely a guilty pleasure but it’s honestly my favorite ultraman for the early episodes and just the joyful cheesy tone of it all. While I wish she got more time as an ultra the fight where 80 and the ultra woman team up is a personal favorite for me
Ultraman 80 was truly a great release because he is unique to be a teacher however he gave up in that and make the series kinda oh normal ultra series again just kaiju battle but after the ep 41 of mebius it was so touching and goosebumps to reminiscence their teacher and how 80 was appreciated as the role of a mentor i hope he will get another big project in his anniversary/reappearances
I felt like I was judging 80 too harshly back when I first watched it, but after this video I guess it really is just THAT dull, even by the standards of a much older show. The bit that always floored me is how wild the sexism got at the end with Yulian. Like, they introduce a new female character, but then kill off the current one at the same time, as if having two women is too much? Not to mention all the shit about not letting her transform for no reason, and then that AWFUL "hey this is the same, right?" android copy they make of the dead girl in the finale. Ghoulish stuff. Would be great if the show actually lived up to that AMAZING opening.
I feel sorry for that poor patreon who didn't get the shout out, but what can you do, mistakes happen. Yeah those Ultraman 80 themes get stuck in your head very easily. At least Tsuburaya apologized somewhat to screwing the character in Mebius.
hmm, so every time they did something interesting that would make it stand out, they pulled back and made it super generic. Seems like they tried to play it so safe it ment no one was really pleased.
I tried to like this, but I couldn't. The moment found out the interesting premise was dropped, I dropped too. I wanted to just enjoy Ultraman bing a teach and teach life lessons. The ending of this show sucked too. Like, really? We don't need Ultraman when we can never seem to put down a monster except for one time andd that was by luck.
I don't like the design of this ultraman, it looks dumb, I don't know why but it does The change of the "format" of episodes was a bad decision, makes the people that liked the"format"leave (as some people say in other coments) But they couldn't do to much though :/ Because the writter leaved, and they don't know what he wanted to do with the series, but they atleast needed to make the protagonist say goodbye to the class or something (Sorry for bad English, it is my second language)
Funny enough in my early tokufan days I thought for a long time that Ultraman 80 had this name because he was an elderly ultraman, and I thought that because of his awful design that made his head look like an little old man. Only years later I would link the fact that he had his own show where he was not an old guy and it was launched in 1980.
I saw bits and pieces of Ultraman 80 on Pluto TV and I came away with this -- 1) Ultra 80 is one of THE UGLIEST-LOOKING Ultra characters. His only real competition for ugliest Ultraman is Ace with that weird banded head design that looks completely out of place. 2) Ultraman 1980 has some of the lowest-production values in the Showa(?) era Ultraman series. I got all the series that were released in steelbook but I have little desire to get much else beyond Ultraman Leo with the exception of Shin Ultraman (which I have!). Yes, there's goofy stuff in the "classic Ultraman" shows but the original 1966 series and Ultraseven are hard to beat. Even Taro and Leo have their goofiness that grows on you. I think the formula was more than a little tired in Ultra 80 and there are things in Ultra 80 I just can't give a pass on. I've seen bits and pieces of the 1990s Ultraman TV shows and some of the later movies of the 2000s but I have to say I think Ultraman 1980 was a low point. It was probably a good thing they gave the Ultra TV series a rest for a decade.

Ultraman 80 is definitely a guilty pleasure but it’s honestly my favorite ultraman for the early episodes and just the joyful cheesy tone of it all. While I wish she got more time as an ultra the fight where 80 and the ultra woman team up is a personal favorite for me
I'm looking forward to seeing your take on Ultra7 X. I actually really enjoyed that series even thought it's a more adult take on Ultraman.
Ultraman 80 was truly a great release because he is unique to be a teacher however he gave up in that and make the series kinda oh normal ultra series again just kaiju battle but after the ep 41 of mebius it was so touching and goosebumps to reminiscence their teacher and how 80 was appreciated as the role of a mentor i hope he will get another big project in his anniversary/reappearances

I felt like I was judging 80 too harshly back when I first watched it, but after this video I guess it really is just THAT dull, even by the standards of a much older show.
The bit that always floored me is how wild the sexism got at the end with Yulian. Like, they introduce a new female character, but then kill off the current one at the same time, as if having two women is too much? Not to mention all the shit about not letting her transform for no reason, and then that AWFUL "hey this is the same, right?" android copy they make of the dead girl in the finale. Ghoulish stuff. Would be great if the show actually lived up to that AMAZING opening.

I feel sorry for that poor patreon who didn't get the shout out, but what can you do, mistakes happen. Yeah those Ultraman 80 themes get stuck in your head very easily. At least Tsuburaya apologized somewhat to screwing the character in Mebius.
hmm, so every time they did something interesting that would make it stand out, they pulled back and made it super generic. Seems like they tried to play it so safe it ment no one was really pleased.

I tried to like this, but I couldn't. The moment found out the interesting premise was dropped, I dropped too. I wanted to just enjoy Ultraman bing a teach and teach life lessons. The ending of this show sucked too. Like, really? We don't need Ultraman when we can never seem to put down a monster except for one time andd that was by luck.

Because the writter leaved, and they don't know what he wanted to do with the series, but they atleast needed to make the protagonist say goodbye to the class or something

Funny enough in my early tokufan days I thought for a long time that Ultraman 80 had this name because he was an elderly ultraman, and I thought that because of his awful design that made his head look like an little old man. Only years later I would link the fact that he had his own show where he was not an old guy and it was launched in 1980.

1980 wasn't a good year for kajiu with Gamera Super Monster and Ultraman 80.
I saw bits and pieces of Ultraman 80 on Pluto TV and I came away with this --
1) Ultra 80 is one of THE UGLIEST-LOOKING Ultra characters. His only real competition for ugliest Ultraman is Ace with that weird banded head design that looks completely out of place.
2) Ultraman 1980 has some of the lowest-production values in the Showa(?) era Ultraman series. I got all the series that were released in steelbook but I have little desire to get much else beyond Ultraman Leo with the exception of Shin Ultraman (which I have!).
Yes, there's goofy stuff in the "classic Ultraman" shows but the original 1966 series and Ultraseven are hard to beat. Even Taro and Leo have their goofiness that grows on you.
I think the formula was more than a little tired in Ultra 80 and there are things in Ultra 80 I just can't give a pass on.
I've seen bits and pieces of the 1990s Ultraman TV shows and some of the later movies of the 2000s but I have to say I think Ultraman 1980 was a low point. It was probably a good thing they gave the Ultra TV series a rest for a decade.
UGM is such a boring name for an attack team! You might as well call them The Job-Doers
