Your comment at the end sums it up perfectly - it's not a professional job and it was painted outside. But the results are still very good. Unless you were scrutinizing the work, you really wouldn't know. And as I always say, "it was better than it was before". I would say that I'm comfortable painting outside for primer, sealer, base and even two stage pearls. My booth is a modified outdoor party tent so I reserve the challenge of putting it up/taking it down for the application of clear. One of the benefits of painting outside is the ability to see your work as you go. Well done! I think someone else mentioned it, but you can still get these parts like glass by wet sanding 1500/2000/3000 and a polish, but that's a lot of work. For a bike like this, this job is perfect.
Thanks very much. I am really proud of how this bike came out. I have been hoping to paint my Cafe Racer this Summer but we don't seem to have any good stretches of good weather to consider painting outside.
It can come down to the gun you shoot for the orange peal. Cheap copy cat spray guns such as ITALCO gloss do an amazing job for a fraction of the price. It will save on materials as well. Looks great! From WA, USA
Thanks for the advice. There are so many things that affect it. We have a decent(ish) F160 gun for clear. But I think that because we spray outside, the air temperature and humidity can make a tremendous difference. That and the fact, I just may not have enough skill! :) But I do get some good results, eventually.
Hi @@SPANNERRASHNICE Performance Yesss 👍👍 Regarding finish Sanding and Orange Peel… I would personnally suggest to avoid sanding it 2000 as mentioned in some comments. You gonna loose bonding big time and take the risk to see your Topcoat to flake or crack in the next few months. Based on our daily routine i would sand that first clear P800 with sponge paper, wash down, prep, ect… then put 20% thinner instead of 10 when you mix for the last 2 coats app. Spray a Tack coat first, wait for 5min, then 2 full ones with 30min flash in between. This will give you a glass result straight from the gun. So, No polish. Just go gently (Not too heavy)… Give it a go on a test panel so you can adjust your gun first 🤞👍
I'm hunting around for information and the information you have is good.. what I have gathered from others and you is I should lightly sand down clear coat and take down the orange peel with 600 wet dry and then put decals on and do what they call a flow coat with clear. I was under the impression that you always sand one way or x pattern and never around in circles. Maybe I'm wrong 🤷. You keep doing you. It's looking good 😁
Yes. Make sure you do the sanding wet. Go for a matt finish over as much as you can. If you have orange peel you can flat it at this stage. Don't go too deep if it is metalic. The clear coat will give you the new glossy finish, and if it works out well, it will be smooth! Good luck.
I have a 1996 Honda CBR900RR erion Edition I have watched all of your videos and I have learned a lot from you thank you so much I'm over here in the states your friend Patrick
Thanks Patrick, I really appreciate your comment, and I am pleased that you have got value out of our videos. Love the Erion 'Blade, but the gold decals on mine are really striking.
I've commented before when the BMW engine bay was painted and clear coated what an excellent job you have done regards to you both keep the videos coming for someone who sprays from their house all i cam say is WOW well done excellent guys keep it up please id love to come and see the E30 when its completed there is such a lot of work going into that it will be a one off when its done regards to you both Alan
Hi Alan, really glad you're enjoying the bike videos as well as the lads E30 series. Thanks for such high praise, you're too kind! 😃 I'm well chuffed with this considering its a garden DIY spray job. A flat and polish wouldn't hurt, but plenty of time to worry about that. It needs to harden anyway. Plenty more vids to come on both E30 and bike projects. Cheers!
Great post … if you don’t mind a quick question.. is it possible to clear coat over decals with a Matt /denim clear coat … I have a Harley with black denim (Matt ) finish and Shiah to apply some nice vintage style decals ..
I haven't ever clear coated with matt, so please don't think I am an expert. However I can't see why spraying over decals should be an issue with matt. Although I expect that to get a really good consistent finish might be hard. The beauty of gloss, is if you put on a good thick coat you can cut it back to remove any imperfections, but I don't see how you can do that with matt. I think you must be trying to get your finish straight out of the gun. Good luck.
@@SPANNERRASH your absolutely right … you can’t cut back the Matt coat s .. what you spray is what you get ..I did a refresh a few years ago and it was a steep learning curve I can tell you … I might try to go gloss .. in found a really nice colour… maybe a front fender first then see .. thank you for your reply.. it is appreciated…
Thanks for your positive comment. With regard to waiting between coats, the data sheet for the product will tell you flash off time etc. But as a rule of thumb I use this. After the initial mist coat, I check on the masking to ensure that the paint has gone tacky, around 5 or 10 minutes or so. After a heavier flow coat, I leave it for longer, 20 minutes or so, checking the masking to see how tacky the coating has got, then I would put on the next coat when it was still tacky but not wet. When you have finished, you need to leave the parts for a long time to ensure the paint hardens. At least a few hours before moving them, and then I leave them for a day or two depending on the temperature, before doing anything with them. In paint shops they put them in an oven to speed up the process, I just have to judge the weather :) With clear I would then leave it a week or two before polishing or any remedial work. That is why I was worried about scratching the tank by riding the bike too soon!
@@SPANNERRASH thank you thank you for that fantastic and detailed response… much appreciated. I’m restoring a Honda VT250F, and I usually get Dream Machine to sort paint out on the restorations I’ve done… but I fancy having a go myself. Presently prepping everything, but I have the decals… Compressor, just need the courage 😆
I would love to tell you, but they came with the bike when I bought it. They have the standard layout, but used gold where the originals where yellow. I'm not sure if any of hte other colours were different. They looked absolutlely fantastic, but that's just my opinion! :)
Isn’t it amazing how much better decal’s make a bike look , and how much better decals look under laquer 👍
These decals look fabulous, and under lacquer they really pop.

Well done. However I would sand it with 2k sandpaper and polish it and final result would b amazing 😎
Yes that is the way to go. I wanted to let the clear coat really get solid before going any futher. I am really pleased with how it came ou.

Awesome, glad it's inspired you to get stuck in, John. With a bit of practise and a lot of patience, you can absolutely DIY this.

Well done I've got a couple of tiny panels to do do you think I'd get away with a rattle can
I would look at using one of the 2k clear coats that you can get in a spray can on the top. Having a good final coat really makes a big difference.
