I already knew the CAGED system for the 5 major chords. Knew the minors along with a extra triad or two. But I never paid any mind to how the chord shapes created the embellishments across the fretboard no matter what key I was in, even though I knew some of the embellishments. Cool stuff man

Buddha belly blessings on you Thom! As a 70 YO returning to the guitar after a 40 year hiatus it’s such a pleasure to be reminded of the “embellishments” in such a delightful way.
"Years and years to master"; said so humbly, but factually. What I wouldn't have given (but certainly didn't have) to have had a master to give this kind of instruction in my home when I was 16-years-old and just starting guitar. Thank you.
Another amazing lesson from a great guitar teacher... but I'm sure a lot of people would now love a specific video on how to do those embellishments pointed in tip N°3 !
That was one of the most useful guitar lessons I've ever had, and so simple even I can understand it. Thanks man, highly appreciated.....................!
I've been working on triads and caged and knew most of your points. The idea that most embellishments are shape related gave me something new today. Thanks!
Thank you so much for all all your teaching by making it so easy to understand. I would’ve never figured it out that way. The only way that I knew was listen to the notes in a chord shape and try to bring those notes to a higher fret which was a pain, I’m learning on my own, and don’t know a lot. Thank you so much for your awesome lessons,.
Wonderful, especially the last-minute concession about time required to learn. Your channel demonstrates Thom that it isn’t the best videos that always get the massive subscription numbers, enviable though yours are. You are a superb player, teacher and presenter and have been entertaining and instructing your viewers steadily for years. If real appreciation translated into subscribers you’d have millions. Thank you.
Guitar pilgrim, I think the tip number 3 deserves it's own video. Hendrix excelled in that particular style of playing, and it can't be given justice in couple of minutes :D I think with your way of explaining things you can make an awesome lesson on how to play that style of rythm guitar without overthinking it :D
Probably one of the best teachers on youtube. You make even the difficult stuff seem so simple but more importantly, understandable for the beginner and intermediate level players like myself. You don't talk too much but even when you do, it's priceless information and not just blah blah. Seriously, great channel and one of the only channels i look forward to seeing new content on, even if it's an artist or genre of music that doesn't interest me and that's saying a LOT!
thank you much for your passion and dedication for guitar,,,, your love for guitar shows in the way you present and teach tips.. you don't hide anything and make it looks simple and encourging to learn
Wow! This has got to be one of your best videos. Truly unlimited potential. Makes a lot of sense. A good teacher is a gift from God it seems. Thank You Pilgrim. I knew some of these but you put it in a great memorable package.
Great lesson man, my whole life I've never heard the term 'embellishments' but its the thing I've always wanted to learn on guitar, thanks for revealing the path forward for me.
I'm sure there will be lots of people who've gained a huge amount from this video! I've been playing for a while so I've already played around with these three tips - but they are massively helpful. Just jamming a chord progression over different areas of the fretboard is great fun. It will impress all your bandmates in your next band practice too. If someone writes a song and your job is to play lead, a little tasteful picking on some different chord shapes always works a treat.
what you have just taught is the money lesson. I been looking for advise like this for the longest time. I knew it was there somewhere just that it seems it is not shared by other instructors or guitar players. thanks so much.
im guessing some knew these tips and didn't know it. You have a way of describing it that opens peoples minds to realize it. you should get onto rumble as well. God bless you my friend!
Awesome video! Man these tips are like keys that unlock some really cool doors. Picked up the guitar at six years old but never had any lessons. All my lessons were listening to Beatles records and and trying to learn chords from easy guitar books. So glad I found you here. Your lessons are priceless!
I've only recently been working on the first two points and maybe the best thing you said was--"It sounds so easy...but of course, it also took me years and years to master." It leaves me feeling less inept. Great points by the way--and another great video from an Amazing guy. Stay Well Groovy One!
Great lesson..can you explain how to choose embellishment notes to make them sound great with the chords that one is playing please..can you show some exercises if possible..always your follower!
Look up videos on using double stops in Hendrix songs. It’s a good place to start, and it makes playing chords more fun, and often more musical. *also, know the basic major and minor scales, to know what will usually work or not.
This video is easily one of the greatest, one of the most underrated guitar tutorials on youtube. Next time I play my guitar I'm gonna try out all three techniques you taught me. Thanks a lot :)
Great lesson! I am going to change how I teach chords now.. I kind of was there with caged but most of the students struggle with the concept and did not work on because the 5 shapes seemed impossible to play- I am just going to present the moving chords like you did. Thanks for the idea
Brilliant lesson man! I’ve been playing a long time, and you’ve inspired me to re-visit some of these techniques. I understood the CAGED system (well, the mechanics of it), but you’ve simplified in such a way that instills a confidence in me to attack it properly. 🙂
Awesome stuff 😎. If you consider also the seldom used open position Gm and Cm (along with the standard Am, Em and Dm). The standard caged approach still applies for minor chords.🙂. Very much appreciated this video thank you
I intentionally disregard tip #2. Ala Bob Weir. I like the challenge of jumping around.... I find that the time delays create sort of a syncopation, as long as I keep the rhythm hand at steady tempo Just me
This video remembers me when I listened for the first time The Grateful Dead and I discovered that Bob Weir played a lot of inversions of the same chord. The importance of the rhythm guitarist should never be underestimated.
I'm sorry to say that for as long as I've had a guitar around I ought to be at the least a session musician, but alas, it didn't happen. So here I am trying to make up for lost time, and this was eminently helpful kind sir. Thank you!
CAGED system - A & E shape barres no problem, but still struggle on the C, G and D shapes - more muscle memory and practice needed !! - then it's embellishment time
CAGED I always found a tad redundant: C and D are really the same; ditto A and G. We all played the F shape early on, no? So I prefer the elegant and honest FDA system for both major and minor. There are after all only three inversions in music.
@@dirtyharry292 Gosh, just do what our host is doing but simplify it to three shapes, like his minor chords. Instead of the rather awkward 'E' shape, use 'F' like Hendrix and Charlie Christian did. (I assume the inventor of CAGED couldn't fit in the letter F). Surprisingly the only guy I can find online who talks FDA is one Fred Sokolow with his "FDA Fretboard Roadmap".
hi thom. Would you please make video about one of these jimi hendrix songs. (Drifting) (Wait until tomorrow) (May this be love) (One rainy wish) (Scorpio woman)
I got another question about you. You're my favorite guitar player in youtube .im a Hendrix style player.and I see your video for long time.im curious to know your hands size measurements from wrist to top of the middle finger and thumb length would you please measure and tell me. thank you thom take care 🌹🙏
Let me know in the comments below if you already knew these 3 tips or what you think!
Simply fantastic, I can finally be a better player

I've been playing for about 45 years and you just made me much better... you are one of the best guitar teachers on UA-cam!
Probably the most valuable advice I have seen for the beginner and intermediate player. Great presentation!
Another amazing lesson from a great guitar teacher... but I'm sure a lot of people would now love a specific video on how to do those embellishments pointed in tip N°3 !

I’m not a beginner and already knew these tips but still love watching your videos. Your enthusiasm is just contagious. Thanks from France
I always have a smile on my face after watching your videos. Thank you for the help on my guitar journey. Long live the Blues.

I knew some of these but you put it in a great memorable package.
The Hendrix technique is a gift from God for simple chords , however understanding CAGED system is preferable to memorising each chord's location.
Thank you mate. You are appreciated and thank you for your Jimmy Hendrix tutorials.
Great lesson man, my whole life I've never heard the term 'embellishments' but its the thing I've always wanted to learn on guitar, thanks for revealing the path forward for me.
That strat sounds awesome! Beautiful playing sir.
Super tips - thanks so much for sharing!!!

Thanks Pilgrim
If is possible could you make a video of exercises please.
Thanks again men
Terrific lesson, thank you!
I know that, but it is well explained. Perfect.

That was an interesting and clear explanation of chord voicings.

You are amazing teacher. You can try to explain caged system to intermediate players. Thanks
Excellent video 😊
Yes, nicely explained. Now for homework.
Fantastic caged chord lesson Pilgrim with that great personality, lol..
This is great. Couldn't quite fathom the F sharp minor shape at 4:56 however 😞
You're student are very lucky A VIDEO WITH YOUR BAND WE REALLY HOPE
Very good. Thanks!
Thank you so much! This was very useful
Would have been nice, if you showed the embellishments for all of the 8 chords
4th tip, grow your hair long
Brilliant video Thom. The most comprehensive explanation of the CAGED system I've seen. Hendrix was the master 😉
High value lesson!!!
