    Consumer Reports recommends this (Bosch 800) and rates it very highly!! I give up. Our 2.5 year old Kitchaid had a leak, we were displaced from our house for rennovations over a month. So hard to pick out any appliance these days. Seems like "they just don't make them like they used to". Yes, many upgrades and better features but things don't seem to last. Good thing we can connect to our dishwashers with WIFI though, haha. Focus on them working well and not breaking before fancy features we don't REALLY need... please!!

      Be careful when deciding to connect your dishwasher to Wi-Fi. I tried doing that today. Then I read the privacy notice on the app I had downloaded. I realized how much information I would have to give up *voluntarily* by agreeing to their terms. I decided to leave my dishwasher dumb.

    I thought I was being overly clean because I cleaned the seals occasionally. It's obvious that I should be doing it more often! Thanks for the tip! By the way, I bought this dishwasher because it was supposed to be the best and I hate it! I can't get all my dishes into it easily. And I think the directions about how to change cycles is explained in the most obtuse manner possible!

    I Bosch 800 two months ago and the service tech has been out here 4 times. After the third time he was "hinting" that we were the problem, ( which is what I was waiting for) then I showed him 12 videos of me trying to start the dishwasher to no avail. That checked his attitude. He replaced the computer board once now he's doing that again on Monday again. I told him I paid for a three-year contract and he'll get a call every time it fails to start by pushing, START, CYCLE, and GO. I will not put up with having to RESET the dishwasher every time I need to use it. Last week it took 30 minutes to get it to start. Again, this is a brand new unit only months old.

      I had a similar experience. After waiting weeks for Bosch to send their "authorized" Bosch repairman, I only received excuse after excuse that it was my problem, an install error, etc. When I called up an independent repairman I use for rentals, he pointed out the defective gasket in the Bosch supplied hose. There's a reason the Google and Yelp reviews for BSH Home Appliances (who directs Bosch's servicing) are dismal.

      Same problem here, press On/Off then Mode, Cycle and Start. I can tell it starts when the sink gurgles, otherwise no way to tell and you cant open the door or it goes into child prevention mode and wont restart, so you gotta hit reset. Then sometimes it stops mid-cycle and leaves water in the bottom and you never know that there is an error light flashing because ther is no exterior display. How F*ing Stupid is that. You have to do a machine care cycle to get it to drain. The filters also clog frequently and must be cleaned almost every wash so you have to make sure to rinse dishes well before loading them. This thing is real finicky. When it works it does a nice job but thats only about 50% of the time. Get the home connect app to change settings like hard water because trying to program the machine is impossible. I will read the manual for the fifth time :o(. At least it doesn't have AI yet and runs the washing machine instead of doing dishes!

    I'm replacing my Bosch 800. The existing is 12 years old. It served me well - and why because Bosch makes a great product. Love everything about it. Cleans exceptionally well, stainless inside, adjustable racks, easy filter clean up, very quiet when running, no element on the bottom that melts plastic containers, I find air dry is a great energy saver - safety float eliminating floods etc. I recommend this to everyone!

    I bought one of these dishwashers 2.5 years ago. I was not able to find a sensible way to install the mounting clips, so I have a bit of a wobble issue. It also took a bit of practice to get the thing to start correctly: carefully press the center of the Power button, then carefully press the center of the Start button, then carefully close the door. But now, it's not an issue. I have not had any of the other problems you discuss. I love this appliance, especially since it's so quiet you can't tell whether it's running. When it dies, I am going to get it stuffed and mounted in the family room above the fireplace.

  • @rubatoguy
    @rubatoguy 9 місяців тому +8

    You are missing one issue: The flimsy door can bend while opening and closing which stresses the top plastic bezel causing it to crack. The first thing you notice with this dishwasher is how flimsy the door is compared to any older dishwashers you may have had. BOSCH will not replace the bezel, even if your dishwasher is under warranty because they deem it a "cosmetic" issue. I say it is a design issue and I predict that this dishwasher will be plagued with cracking bezels until they issue either a door reinforcement kit or a reinforced bezel. It is too bad because otherwise this is an excellent dishwasher.

    We have only had our Bosch 800 about 2 months. This morning I could not get my dishwasher to start. I checked the manual and there wasn’t a troubleshooting page. Grrr. Glad I found your video. I think it’s a bracket issue. I was able to get it to finally start by leaning on the door to get it to close more firmly and seal, and therefore finally start. I’m going to have to keep an eye on it though to make sure it doesn’t wobble loose mid-cycle. Bummer we’re dealing with this issue when we thought we were buying top of the line.

No issues with the door seal either. Your floor may be out of level on one corner. A twist in the body would cause the same symptoms. It's possible that the chassis is a bit twisted on its own too. I get a soap film left on my travel mug. I thought it was the stainless steel until now. I haven't checked myself yet, but I suspect it could be from a clogged filter allowing some soapy water to remain during the rinse cycle. I used to work for Bosch and their designs need to be set up exactly. Perfectly level and plumb at all corners, plenty of water pressure, etc. Check the water inlet for mineral deposit buildup the same as you would a washing machine. Replace the pump and inlet screen or try a CLR type of solution accordingly.

    We had a 6 y0 Bosch 500 series. It sensed a leak under the unit that disabled it. We were told the pump that runs the unit would have to be replaced at a cost of $600 plus the $150 diagnostic run. We oped to replace it. We install the Benchmark unit a few weeks ago and right away were amazed by how unexpectedly clear the glassware was turning out after cleaning. I thought their drying method upgrade was just a marketing thing, but it is the real deal.
    Installing was tricky, but the delivery team hired in the Bay Area in CA did great. It is solid. We'll see how it lasts. The previous model was not solid, as Poodle Dad reports about his 800 series.
    We are taking note to keep the seals on the door wiped down and just hoping for the best, because we are thrilled with the results. This is a massive upgrade in terms of results. And while it comes with a flatware rack that is too small for a big mean, we have converted to using the upper flatware rack which individually racks each spoon, fork, and knife.

    Whew, just started ours up today for the first time. Lots of condensation coming off the machine when we open it up. I have to say, I've never seen this type of problem with any other dishwasher we've owned. We have a granite top which is dripping condensate above the door when we open the door. If we had a laminate top, we would have already ruined it with the degree of hot wetness that the machine has created on the underside of the top. And, yes, the mounting brackets are crap and the gasket around the edges is crap. Actually, the nylon cord that serves as the door hinge mechanism is crap too. And, while I'm at it, the feet and their adjustment are crap as well.

      The exposed heating element in most dishwashers was the exact thing I was hoping to avoid in getting a new dishwasher so many years ago. As long as you use the Crystal Dry setting on the button panel and use rinse aid, your dishes will be perfectly dry.

      @@Mary-bw6go I think that drying without rinse-aid is just more likely leave water spots on your glassware. This is especially true if your water source produces "hard" water (an excess of calcium and magnesium). My town's water leaves terrible calcium deposits on our cars when we hand wash them in the driveway unless we're cautious to hand dry when done. If your water is like this you could possibly put a special filter on the water line to your kitchen sink to reduce the "scale". I too worry about the chemicals in rinse-aid, I just haven't gotten off my butt to do anything about it yet. 🤨 Maybe those chemicals have made me lazy. 😜

I'm replacing a Whirlpool Gold that has served our large family well since 2004 - that's just over 20 years - because it started to shut off mid-cycle and the door spring finally broke. The plastic pieces on my old dishwasher have been replaced over the years but I think it's time to let this one retire.

    Hmmm. I bought mine in 2017 but haven't had any problems. Mine has mounting clips, but I used larger and longer screws than what it came with. I also raised the height of the back maybe 1/4" higher than the front so all 4 pads are firmly on the floor (there is a screw behind the front bottom toe kick panel to adjust the rear height) Door always seals, never had it stop mid-cycle. For the rinse aid issue, there is an option to reduce the amount of rinse aid used per cycle. I think there are 6 levels on mine and the factory setting is #5. I changed mine to 3 because I live alone and tend run it before its full. Yours may be different, but on mine I first press the button to turn it on, then hold down the button for "Normal" load and "Start" buttons at the same time. After a few seconds it beeps and the display shows r:03 (as I use the 3rd setting. Pressing other buttons cycles through from r:00 (rinse aid option off) to r:06 (highest amount dispensed each cycle). Good luck...hope you get yours to work better, I've been happy with mine.

    @davidgapp1457 2 години тому

    I had an earlier version, the SHX57C05UC/31 and more recently an 800 (SHX78CM5N). The UNIVERSAL problem with these (and ALL Bosch) dishwashers is the turbine pump. For such an expensive machine, this is the cheapest, nastiest piece of plastic imaginable and it is almost certain to fall apart. Usually we get between 5 and 7 years before the tiny pegs which hold the two halves of the turbine together either snap off and/or disintegrate. The one and ONLY reason we threw out the SHX57 was because the turbine repair kit is no longer available anywhere. I have considered machining a turbine from aluminum with a plastic seat for the seal to the pump motor, but honestly I don't see why I should do Bosch's job for them.
    The 800 is a much nastier piece of machinery (than my SHX57) and Bosch should really be ashamed of themselves. Mine, at least, came without any rear insulation padding (only the sides and tops were deemed worthy of sound insulation). The insulation at the bottom of the machine and along the edges is also mostly absent (again, compared to the SHX57). This probably explains why the new 800 (at least mine) is more than 4db noisier than the SHX57C. I figure I will buy some more padding off e-bay and cut-to-shape padding for the MANY exposed areas which don't have acoustic insulation.
    The very first thing you do when you buy any 800 dishwasher is rip off the plastic/metal grip on the middle shelf. It ALWAYS jams up against the door! ALWAYS. This is clearly a design fault and it's something Bosch needs to fix. Mine came with a weird burn-like mark where the metal BOSCH plate touches the door. It is easy to remove and you'll save yourself so many issues.
    In general we haven't had an issue with the door seals. Nor do we clean the machine. However, we also have a whole-house water softener which seems to make everything from appliances to faucets work and work and work. To give you some idea. For our 5 person home, I have replaced ONE shower valve in 19 years of ownership. I cannot overstate the value of having a water softener if you live in an area like Phoenix which has horrible water.
    The next worst feature is the drain pump. This is garbage. It gets noisy and weak at around 4-5 years. When I buy a Bosch the very first thing I do is buy a new drain pump. Now to be fair, unlike the turbine repair kit, the drain pump is still available - which is good as this too is cheap and nasty. Of course it isn't cheap if you buy the part from Bosch.
    Finally we get to the control panel. I could go into great detail, but sooner or later one of the relays will burn out or de-solder itself. Long explanation short, these parts are running too close to their design limits for comfort. When you stress a component it is simply going to fail earlier.
    As with everything Bosch, their dishwashers are insanely over-priced and out-of-date. Heck, while LG have DC motors, I believe my new 800 series comes with an old AC pump with a run capacitor! Seriously! In this day-and-age!
    So then, why do I buy Bosch? Well 19 years ago when I bought my first, it was simply the best around. But the competition has caught up and at much, much better prices. I would probably recommend an LG quadwash pro. It too is rated at 42db but I've found in real world use it's a markedly quieter 42db dishwasher compared to the Bosch 800. Personally I think Bosch management is indolent and greedy. Ditto their engineers who design this disappointment. Would I recommend anything Bosch? Well, yes and no.
    The simple truth is that for some reason, Bosch works better than the competitors. I can't really explain why - certainly isn't the fundamental technology - but whether it's an old Bosch Benvenuto B20 coffee machine or the latest induction stove top... Bosch seem to deliver a product that works. At least for a while. My advice? If you must buy Bosch, also buy the longest warranty you can afford - you are going to need it.
    The problem is this: I have yet to see any machine, developed in the past 15 years, that is worth the money. Not one.

Our kitchenaid dishwasher (KDPE334GPSO), 2.5 years old, failed and was leaking from the motor diverter, (unbeknownst to us). The water went back, not out to the floor where we'd see it. It soaked up into the drywall and traveled under the hardwood flooring to the next two adjacent rooms. We finally noticed a problem when dark spots started appearing on the living room wood floor. Nightmare! Thank goodness for insurance but it's been a massive mess. We're definitely getting a dishwasher with leak detection. Our insurance company is going after kitchenaid to recover money for the damages. The guy who picked up the dishwasher, for analysis to submit to court, said he sees stuff like this all the time.... it's his FULL TIME JOB to write up appliance reports for court! Yikes. Why wouldn't leak detection come as a basic feature? SMH. I LOVED this dishwasher besides that, lol. :(......

    I also have the 800 and have been very disappointed. A few things you didn't mention:
    1. the top (third) rack is useless because there is no additional cleaning arm between the shelves. The second rack cannot get clean when the tiny tiny top mounted cleaning spinner has the third rack in its way.
    2. The second rack has a tendency to not seal in the back. I believe this is why they made it as deep as they did, and why there's pressure on the door. They need that door to push the second rack into the seal for the below-mounted arm.
    3. The E:07 error code. We've had this randomly stop cycles, until one day no cycle would complete. Still working this one out.
    And yes, that rinse aid issue is awful. We've found that filling it only a little bit helps, no more than halfway.
    We bought this one because of the rating in CR after countless issues with LG. Never again.

It took a bunch of zip ties to fix the problem. Oh, and the water tank on the side of the unit gets so hot, it has delaminated the inside section of my cupboard. Well, at least you don't see it. I have an ancient Bosch Evolution 800 SHE99C05UC/19 from around 2004. The tabs on this one are not at the sides but at the top. I have never had any issue with the door closing tight enough. All the door seals are still original.
    That does not mean it is maintenance free. Between 8-10 years, all the rubber O rings began to fail from the high temperature of the water. They are not expensive. Less than $10 for all the O rings. It's best to replace all the O rings at one time when the first one goes. It's not fun to do it one at a time.
    Twice the two piece impeller in the pump failed. The two pieces are heat staked together. The little heat staked bumps on the backside eventually give up so the two parts separate. Result is the motor spins but the impeller blades do not. New impellers with the ceramic seal are about $80 on eBay. Last month, the front panel display failed when the washer was hot. Part way through a cycle, it would short out the controller so it could not complete a cycle. $165 for the display.
    The front display mostly shows remaining time. The dishwasher can run and complete cycles with it disconnected.
    My last washer was a Whirlpool with a plastic tub. The plastic tub cracked eventually. The dishwasher that came with the house was a Kenmore with a steel interior that rusted though.
    So far the Bosch has not had a failure severe enough that it cannot be repaired. It is also very quiet for such an ancient machine at 44 dB. I think I got my money's worth out of it.

    • @poodledad
      @poodledad  Місяць тому

      Sounds like you did and it's helpful to be able to do the repairs yourself. The bosch 800 can be mounted on side or top. You have to install a bracket on solid surface countertops to do the top mount. It seems like a side mount is the better option, but I still have issues with mine not staying secure.

      I have had five brands of dishwashers. Hotpoint replaced with a Maytag. Kenmore, replaced with Whirlpool, Whirlpool replaced with Bosch. I do not recall why the Hotpoint was replaced but the Hotpoint, Kenmore, and Whirlpool had either plastic or porcelain steel tubs. The Maytag and Bosch both have stainless tubs. Both are still in daily use today. The Bosch was from 2004, the Maytag from 2005 but the Maytag only cost $433 from Home Depot and it has no repairs versus four for the Bosch.
      The Maytag has a conventional heating element in the bottom. It does not super heat the water for drying so the rubber parts like O rings do not fail. It also has a one piece impeller unlike the Bosch. Those differences resulted in three repairs to the Bosch that the Maytag due to its design did not have. Also, Maytag parts are a lot less expensive. I got lucky with the Bosch front LCD display panel for $165. Everywhere else it was $230.
      But the Bosch is quieter and roomier due to getting rid of the heating element in the bottom. That also makes it very crammed under the tub where most repairs need to be made. I also could have bought four Maytags for the price of the Bosch, lol!
      I hope this is information is helpful for anyone thinking about a new dishwasher & thank you Poodle Dad for the video.

      I looked at the 800, 500, 300, and settled for the 100+ series. The + indicates that the second rack has height adjustments that allows you to add additional clearance for tall items on the bottom rack. Essentially other than the display, screens and the adjustable tines and third rack, I really the the mechanics of these units are pretty identical. There are a few other things like a powered washing arm on the 800s but I really couldn't justify all the bells and whistles. 2 days after installation I got the dreaded E15 error, however with no display screen I get an alarm, flashing lights, and the water leak error on the app. Called support and we reset the unit. Support felt it was a software or electronic glitch. If water had been present after resetting the unit, it should have gone back into alarm. Have had no alarm since. I've learned a lot about the importance of those seals to be clean and starting new like this, I will give this area special attention. Better to keep it clean now than let the crud build up over time. All in all, I really feel good about the 100+ and got it from Best Buy on sale for $499. Obviously the problems I've seen regarding E15 problems can happen on any model regardless of the price you pay.

    Thanks for this video, Poodle Dad! I have had an 800 for a few years too. Part of your door sealing issue is that you have a ton of scale, soap buildup visible on the door itself - use a microfiber cloth to just wipe this off once a week. The mounting fix is pretty easy - with your countertop type e.g., granite, you need to use an EZ attach kit that will use two part epoxy as a mounting bracket with the tabs to attach underneath the countertops. The Jet Dry issue could be related to the setting you're using that determines how-much rinse aid to release each cycle - check out your manual and update settings on the dishwasher to a lower setting than the default. Hope this helps.
