CORRECTION: it was actually old ramona that sent the memoir back in time (written by young neil). goofy ahh mistake, but thankfully doesnt hurt any of my core arguments

alright, we're at the useless tag spam part of my descriptions once agin. from the top, let me just list every character in the show: scott pilgrim, ramona flowers, knives chau, wallace wells, julie powers, young neil, kim pine, stephen stills, envy adams, stacey pilgrim, gideon graves, matthew pattel, lucas lee, roxy richter, todd ingram, ken katayanagi, and kyle katayanagi. woah. anyway scott pilgrim takes off is an anime adaptation of the scott pilgrim comic written by bryan lee o'malley. the comic has also received a movie adaptation called scott pilgrim v.s. the world. the anime is made by studio science saru and directed by abel gongora. although the anime has received largely positive reviews, it is somewhat polarizing due to the direction it takes in its narrative. im here to talk about that.

Would've been better if it were just Kim and Roxie furiously tonguing each other for eight episodes straight.
the show was a masterpiece tho

*Incredibly loud incorrect buzzer*
@@qcard76nah, this one- *[EXTREMELY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER]*
i dont really agree that the series intended to be a mystery-- its more like scotts disappearance is a plot device to get ramona to reconnect with the other exes and then achieve closure with them, as she wouldn't approach them to do so on her own. it doesn't really try to be a mystery-- the robot's prominent in every episode, the twins are seen with the robot in episode 2, and when scott's back they immediately wrap up the "mystery" arc with him just flat out and anticlimactically saying "yup, you guys were right!"
just bc its a mystery in-universe to the characters doesn't necessarily mean its a mystery to the audience. that's how we get stuff like dramatic irony
id agree more if i thought the other stuff was compelling, but unfortunately, to me its not. the mystery was yet another appeal that couldve been but wasnt, so i thought it was worth mentioning
@@Crunchybagels right but it doesn't change that the story isn't really intended to be a mystery-- the robot is heavily featured in the opening sequence and every time ramona interacts w an ex its 99% character interaction/development and 1% "btw did you fake scotts death". it just seems to be a bit unfair to frame it as a mystery series when its really more like "ramona and side character development: the series"
@@goodnightgoodnightgoodnight i dont think its unfair to mention the mystery when it is in fact an element of the story. once again, id be less harsh on it if i thought the ramona and side character development was more compelling. if its a part of the story, i can and will criticize it if i dont think its very good. if another element of the story does the heavy lifting so the given element being sub par doesnt make it suffer, ill phrase it differently. i didnt think either was compelling.
I think a lot of people don't understand that the reason the Scott Pilgrim anime was made in the first place was one, for more Scott Pilgrim material for Scott Pilgrim fans, but also to flesh out the characters that didn't have the opportunity to be explored, and to do that you have to cut Scott out for one because he already has enough character development (bro has 6 comics, a feature-length film, and a game all about him). Now because Ramona knows Scott's alive due to her dream the only people who would do something like kidnap him are her exes (which didn't get a lot of development in the comics or the movie and most are just killed off the first time we meet them). Hence, she has to confront them allowing for more character exploration. A great example of this is Roxie she was finally shown as a real person who was genuinely hurt when Ramona basically passed her off as "another ex" or "just a phase". As well as Ramona is getting her own character development realizing how shitty of a person she was to herexess and learning to stop running from things. Another thing is, at 6:20 you say old Scott made the movie script, no he didn't, it's made by Ramona based off of a biography by old Young Neil, which she adapted into a movie BY RAMONA. Old Scott wanted to erase every last trace of him and Ramona, so why would he make a movie script about how they got together? Also in 6:59, you say that instead of it being a story about Scott Pilgrim growing it's rushed by necessity due to changes made in the narrative, that's cause it's NOT ABOUT SCOTT. The anime is NOT ABOUT SCOTT. Another thing you said is that none of the characters get a meaningful arc, uhh Roxie? Ramona? Gideon? Mathew? They all get development, I've already covered Roxie and Ramona. But Gideon learns to treat the woman that he loves with respect and to stop being a narcissistic dickwad who was overcompensating for being a loser in high school. Mathew is also content at the end of the anime and gets over Ramona. But yes, I do agree with your point about Ramona not getting a definitive moment to think about herself. Another thing is the characters relating to Scott i.e. Knives, Kim, and Envy don't get development either because since they were so intertwined with Scott they already had their development. I also think that it's fine that Scott didn't get that good of character development since he's already gotten that 3 times before. Also, I genuinely do not understand why people want another Scott Pilgrim comic adaptation, we've had 3 versions of the same story already, so why do so many people want another one? It's like Spider-Man where there are many different adaptations of the same origin story, and yet for some reason, Scott Pilgrim fans want no variety apart from visual stylistic changes. Oh, another thing, the anime is not in the same universe as the comics, old Scott is not comics Scott.
tl;dr: The anime isn't about Scott, it was made for the other character's development. I do agree the development was a bit sloppy tho. imo it's fine that Scott didn't get good development cause he's already gotten it 3 times before. Also, why do ppl want the same Scott Pilgrim story again? When it been done 3 other times? Also, fyi the anime is not part of the comics it's based on it, but it's not part of it.
P.S. I would make my own video on this but I don't have the proper equipment for that so the most I can do is use this comment section. Also, this is my opinion, everyone has theirs, I like the anime, but you don't wtv, and if you're reading this, thanks for reading my psycho analyzation.
though i disagree with most of what you said, upon checking again i did totally flub the bit where i said scott wrote the memoir. oops! i have the memory of a goldfish. anyway, ill put a correction in the description.

So, Take off is my first (and only ) contact with scott pilgrim. And I love it: It is really funny
Other than that, I do think the show was waaay too short for what it was trying to do, the story could have been more compelling and developped with more episodes, not rushing theses character developements in one episode.
The Ramona case is special, I think they gave her good character developement in 2 episodes, but the fact is it doesn't feel like it between those two. And as we learn throughout the series, it's really weird to see Ramona, a character that has evil exs due to her habit to run away from relationships, search for Scott, which she saw for 1 day, with that much passion.
Nah it was literally amazing!
“It’s not like Zaregoto”
Yeah you could say that 😂
kinda silly that the time travel stuff is ridiculous when they had super silly stuff like a vegan dude literally having super powers and there being a vegan police to arrest him
you misunderstood my point. when i say the time travel stuff is ridiculous, what im emphasizing is that its self indulgent for the sake of being self indulgent, while neglecting exploring its themes and characters in a satisfying way. i say this very expressly in the video, even acknowledging the story's "nichijou-esque" (to quote my phrasing) logic
1:28 I was expecting Austin tindle as Scott
I agree with your takes on the anime. I just realized how meh the Scott disappearance mystery was, but the biggest problem in the show, in my opinion, is the dead air during the early episodes.
I with they adapted the comics faithfully
contrarian crnchy is back baby

Tbh I think the most interesting thing about this show is how it stretches the use of the term "anime". Traditionally, anime referred to animation produced in Japan for primarily Japanese audiences. As its international appeal has grown, more effort has gone into marketing and platforming to an international audience, but it is still first and foremost a Japanese cultural artefact.
This show, while animated in Japan, is an American-Japanese collaborative project, based on an American film by a British director and a Canadian visual novel, on an international platform. The fact that Edgar Wright and the whole cast of the original film is involved suggests it is intended primarily for fans of the film, not specifically for Japanese audiences (although I'm sure the film has many Japanese fans).
I'm not saying it's wrong to call it anime, but I do think it's straddling a line and it's interesting to examine that. I don't want all animation to just be called "anime" from now on, and I don't think that just because something is made in Japan it necessarily is anime. There is a not incomparable international following for British television, although it doesn't have quite the same catchy name, yet we would not say that Secret Invasion is a British show just because it was made in Britain. I think these cultural lines exist for a reason and it is interesting to see them blur.
Anime is literally just shorthand for “animashon”, or animation. SpongeBob is also an anime. Don’t try to sound authoritative on something you don’t understand.

idk i just liked it as fanservice (mostly for wallace because i fucking love wallace)
thats fair
Bruh, you perfectly summed up all the things I thought about Take Off lmaooo. I liked it but it felt more like "Scott Pilgrim fanservice(but minus Scott): The anime" than anything
10:27 I know it hearts
I liked the anime and the movie they were pretty entertaining would love more manga and light novels went similar route to Scott Pilgrim adding more things on top of the already existing material instead of basically only animating scenes and leave it at that.
I do think an anime adaptation that followed the comic or movie would also have been entertaining but if the adaptation does not add anything on top of animating the story it is adapting why else animate it in the first place you could then just as well read the comic
Might be because I am a Scott Pilgrim fan and I found the movie already a pretty decent adaptation of the comic so I had less issue with the anime doing something emtirely different
That's a much better title imo. Banging thumbnail either way.
They should’ve gave the story more time to develop a second season would help give more time to give convincing character arcs
I think the reason they didn't do what you said is because many shows on Netflix have been getting cancelled after (or during) the first season. Imagine if Scott Pilgrim Takes Off ended and was going to have a second season, but like many shows, Netflix would likely cancel the show before it had the chance to finish out its story. I think it was a good idea, the way they approached this problem by just making one story into one season to avoid any character arcs/plot points that would never be finished.
@@GoCommitOofie to solve that issue they could just add more episodes to season 1 to give more room and build to the characters arcs. but I don’t think it would get a cancellation this show was in the top 10 Netflix tv shows for some time so there’s definitely an audience for a second season
I just really hated how they made the out of focus areas look, ish borderline gave me a migraine
There's an interesting thematic throughline I wanted to touch on: Scott Pilgrim isn't a bad person, he's just stunted. The mind of a 17 year-old in a 23 year-old's body. It's why he doesn't have a job, it's why he's dating a highschooler, it's why the only people who tolerate him are his highschool pals.
I wanted to establish this because it's *the* core pillar in the construction of SPTO. Scott is mentally frozen in time at a physical age where that's still (barely!) tolerated. He fails to change after travelling to the future because he lacks the personal insight to identify that the way Older Scott (i.e.: he himself) lives is pathetic.
It's only once Even Older Scott hurts his friends when Scott realizes that he himself, as he is, is the problem. That's what makes the ending work without follow-through: Scott is stubbornly blind to the harm he causes and naturally grows past it once the truth is revealed, _A Christmas Carol_ style.
If they wanted to change the show they should have made it about knives
Maybe a sequel should cover Knives and other characters in OVAs to shed more light on them

In all honesty, the art style, the comedy, and the 4th and 5th (mostly 5th) episode carried the show
i personally didnt care for the 4th much but the 5th was hilarious to me, definitely one of the reasons to watch this show
I’ll watch this video later but I just wanted to say that Call of the Night ended and for once I actually feel really happy with a manga’s ending 😊
Anyway, watched the video and yeah; I see your points and honestly agree for the most part, but I still love the show. I especially liked how the ending went full Unlimited Bladeworks with the whole “Alright, I’m killing my past self” thing. Favorite part was probably how they fleshed out the evil exes because they were all hilarious in this.
Honestly, I just think you went into this expecting too much. You call it self-indulgent for the sake of it and compare it to the work of art that is Zaregoto, but I don’t think it was going for anything like that in the first place. The advertisement definitely could’ve done a better job of things, but I think it’s good as an extra spin-off to the main series’ content. Like, the changes to the plot don’t serve any purpose other than being self-indulgent because that was probably the point, they just wanted to have fun with it.
Finally somebody with the right take. Why is the show even be trying to be a mystery, when that's not its forte? We're literally just going from ex to ex and asking, 'Hey, did you kidnap Scott? No? Okay, next'. The show doesn't really care about its mystery, and by extension, neither do we. It even solves the mystery preemptively and unceremoniously, to deflate any small remaining sense of curiosity you might have held onto.
While the movie was incredibly entertaining and had the right kind of frenetic pacing to blow our minds with magical realism--like how abruptly and hilariously it introduces us to the evil exes, then hits us with people turning into coins, etc--the anime dragged its feet. I was repeatedly asking 'what's the point of all this', why did we need a meta movie-about-the-show-within-the-show subplot? The middle of the show was excruciatingly slow, and just felt meandering. We traded a great plot for a subpar alternate universe one.
love it when people write essays in my comments keep it up

@@Crunchybagels haha thats awesome i was super caught off guard by that very cool video
I think the show was a little to reliant of the viewer having a preconceived notion of what the characters are like. As a love letter from an older Bryan O'mally to the his series I think it's great . But it fails as a stand alone story. I hope they doa season 2 where Scott actually finishes his ark.
Hi again. Well, I don't have too much to say on this occasion, sooo... I will just say this one thing: the anime shouldn't be the first contact with Scott Pilgrim media (in general, not just your case). I have some mixed feelings about your opinions, but I understand why you might not like some things-the Ramona as a protagonist case is one thing. Actually, the only one XD-but in general, great video, as always. (It ended up not being just one thing, lol).

Based
"anime"
i mean, is there a reason why it isnt anime
@@Crunchybagels With relatively ambiguous cases like Scott Pilgrim, it would be foolish to rely on a ridged definition for anime. Because I don't think it's any singular factor but many. A faithful adaptation of an American comic (or graphic novel) series, commissioned by Americans, created around the english dub, done by studio Science Saru which since its early days has done lots of work on cartoons/ international stuff, and directed by a Spaniard for the cherry on top.
thanks for the reply! in writing reply, i actually found the issue more complicated than i gave it credit for initially. well, "issue". its a semantic argument at the end of the day. but ig ill get into some counterpoints to what you said. i dont think the director being a spaniard means much when hes lived in japan for some 10 years, nor do i care much about what its adapting. if rwby ice queendom and cyberpunk edgerunners are anime, its clearly not much of a factor. anime just means animated shows made in japan in general, so what its adapting doesnt mean a whole lot. i was actually surprised to learn that the english were in fact recorded first, so youve got me there, and afaik it was commissioned by english people, and the script was written by bryan lee o'malley. where i think it gets interesting though is that not only is the animation made by science saru, but directing, episode directing, and storyboarding are also done at science saru by japanese people. (or at the very least, people living in japan, once again i dont really care that the director is spanish, im assuming hes a japanese citizen now though im not 100% on that actually)
i guess the line between anime and not anime is getting blurrier and blurrier with time, and the ease of outsourcing through twitter to people of every nationality, but i think scott pilgrim takes off at the very least makes a solid case for it being anime. also, is your pfp hyatt from excel saga?
