The scene where Kim and Roxie kissed each other is smooth. The animators who worked on _Scott Pilgrim Take Off_ knows exactly what they're doing with that kiss scene.

O’Malley said on Instagram that Old Scott is not Scott from the comics, the anime is its own thing and just another version were the events of the series happened. Scott Pilgrim always reflects O’Malley where he is in his life. He always admitted that he and Ramona was a self insert of him and then girlfriend turned wife. The books he wanted to finish it before he turned 30 because it wouldn’t feel the same since it was a story for people in their 20s. Seconds (which you should read) is about finding your place and moving on. Now the anime feels like someone who has grown up more been through different kinds of hardships. Like O’malley’s own divorce with his wife a while back.l
I feel like that "scott isn't the same as the comics" part is bs, mainly bc of two reasons: 1. Some people were hard hating on it, so maybe he felt it was backfiring and said "hey, lets pretend its not the same one, haha" 2. Its obvious it is, that Scott had the same-exact adventure as the comics one, plus its just a reflection of Bryan's past life, just like the comics did
@@edoardomaster64well even before the thing came out he said that the anime was it's own thing and that every every Scott Pilgrim project was a different universe and about future Scott past what if it's just a alternate version of Scott who went through similar events as the Scott from the comics
@@edoardomaster64His story is close to the comics but not exact. He’s from the straightforward adaptation of the comics the show would’ve been if he didn’t change things. It’s like the first episode before the fight, it’s got a lot of direct quotes from both the comic and movie but it also changed a few details.
Once I realized it was an extension of the comics, I really enjoyed the show. Focusing on Ramona and the Ex's was a great move. I do find it weird that the Twins got no screen time, when all the other Ex's got entire episodes. Hard agree as well that this show definitely feels like a post-divorce O'Malley revisiting his characters older and wiser. A couple of additional personal high points: - Envy's big Kill La Kill Kiryuin energy when she crashes the funeral. - Knives and Kim are in their video game outfits for the final episode (Knives' black outfit, scarf and red streak, Kim in her stripped black and white coat). Stephen and Wallace might be as well, its harder to see. - Playing the midboss music from the video game during the Old Scott fight.
@@FloridianDemonComics no it really doesn't have you heard of a phrase call character assassination if it's a sequel then it involves that but since it's own thing it doesn't involve that.
I personally feel like Scott Pilgrim takes off is a love letter to the series well also heavily develops lots of the characters that never got focused on both in the movie and the comic.🐱
The anime developed the evil exes a lot but as a return barely developed Scott and Ramona. If you want to see Scott's and Ramona's love story instead of Todd's and Wallace's you should read the comic.
@@RailwayScholar exactly, the film, comics and game focus mostly on Scott, and this series is a nice change and actully let's other characters have some spotlight. you don't like it and just wanted the same or similar Scott filled adventure? you have 3 other pieces of media that do that
@@connorradcliffe1769While I do agree with you that the show is good and develops the other characters pretty well, I do disagree with your last point. Let's be honest, the movie and show aren't super accurate to the comics. So, with this show, we thought we might get an animated verson of it with better focus on the other characters. But we didn't. As for the lack of development of the 2 Protagonist, your point doesn't apply here either. The show was not advertised as a sequel, so I don't have to treat it as such. So, instead, we have a Protagonist who dissappear for half the show after the first episode, and a character who doesn't have a lot going on personality wise. I think this show was great but it could of been so much better.
I like the idea that the future Scott is the one from the movie specifically. In the book the story takes place over a year and over that time Scott really reconciles and tries to change rather than the movie where he kinda stays where he is except in the end for like 6 minutes and the story took place over two weeks. I love the idea that the reason it didn’t work out with Ramona for movie Scott in the future is because the whole story arc was too short so it didn’t sink in enough.
it is, but its a skip another trojan horse show using the brand name to then not be the brand never about what u can stand, you can stand a lot, its about a standard you should have its another waste of a opportunity to make the actual remake it should of been, its a skip
Another point that adds to this idea is the weapon of choice of the two different Scotts. In the comic, he uses the sword of empathy, going with the theme that he manages to learn how to look outside of himself and understand other people. On the other hand, movie Scott gets the sword of self-respect, namely, he's learned that he's right, and that all he really needs to do is double down on backing himself. One of these epiphanies is going to be more prone to the sorts of errors that Old Scott made than the other.
I love the overall message of the show about how one's actions always have consequences, especially when it comes to other people. Putting it through the lens of video game aesthetics is perfect because a lot of us are at the age where it resonates. The power of self-respect sword from the movie was a good idea in theory, but it did little to relate to the above message
Matthew Patel is the biggest character improvement in the whole show for me mostly because his entire character befor was that he was the first evil ex and he has mystical powers and that’s it. For the other exes we at least got some type of character but he just showed got beat and that’s it so I was definitely pleased with the way the show handled him
I argue almost all exes have character improvements. But if I have to rank I say ofc Matthew Patel first. 2. Gideon (Gordon) Graves 3. Roxie Ritcher 4. Lucas Lee 5. Todd Ingram 6. & 7. Kyle & Ken
At first Patel was just a tutorial character and having him presumably beat Scott made his move to question the whole league make a lot of sense since wtf was the Leauge gonna do if they defeated Scott, get with Ramona? I don’t think so
As someone who neither read the comics nor watched the movie, I loved this series. I was really confused at first because I wasn't really familiar with the characters or the setting, but I enjoyed the weird vibes and how the characters were written, and how everything came together in the end. And I'm glad I got to watch it at age 20, because I don't think I would have appreciated it as much as I did if I were younger.
I was expecting a 1-2 adaptation, the kind that picks the original work and adapts it enhancing it's aspects and, with that said, I loved the animation, they made an entire new story that delivers the same and then more. God it was so great.
it is, but its a skip another trojan horse show using the brand name to then not be the brand never about what u can stand, you can stand a lot, its about a standard you should have its another waste of a opportunity to make the actual remake it should of been, its a skip
@@puddingj9406a title isn’t enough to justify the absence of the main character , plus take off could literally have a different meaning like “the story is takes off in a new chapter “
I really liked the show as it offers a critique of the manic pixie dream girl and average gamer guy pairing. It undoes the romanticism of it. Ramona cant commit to anything and Scott is a loser with his head up his ass. They both have so much growing to do and I love that the story shows that it takes so much more work than just "getting the girl"
Yeah but an evil ex husband who went through that emotional finale from the comic where Scott and Ramona learn the exact same lessons as in the anime finale. I just don't understand how the divorce happened.
@@icedragonkid1480 But he did learn his lessons though. Except if the anime goes off a whole different universe where Scott didn't learn anything. If so, my question remains: why?
The live action was like having Italian food in America. The comics were like going to Italy to have authentic Italian food. The Netflix "adaption" was like expecting Italian food but getting sushi instead. I like sushi, but I was expecting Italian. Anybody who was disappointed by the Netflix version is completely justified.
I read the comics before the movie came out and saw the movie 4x in cinema, also had the game. As much as I love the source, I absolutely love the new take on it we got. We got to see the ex's get fleshed out way more. Roxie was my fav and I love her even more now. So glad they brought the cast back and that animation is beautiful
8:25 This is a show about what Scott Pilgrim would be if Bryan Lee O Malley grew up. He co-wrote the show and the premise was decided upon after he had writers block about another adaptation and his co-writer jokingly suggested killing Scott off to mix things up while the pair were having dinner.
The only bad thing about the show is the lack of Scott fighting Ramona's exes. I was reallllly looking forward to seeing the fights play out in gorgeous animation but I can appreciate the fact that they gave us more to the world/lore.
I don't think it's so much of a bad thing when you consider a potential second season, which Bryan himself doesn't confirm nor deny it at this moment and the mid-credit scene does appear to hint at it. I'm interested to see what kinda different spin on the original "Scott vs The League Of The Seven Exes" narrative set up they could possibly pull off since it appears that most, if everyone in the league has come to terms with their loss and move on in this iteration of the storyline.
@@GuyWhoLikesTheSnarkies1435I was thinking about what season 2 could potentially be about given what SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS Gideon says at the end alongside Julie Powers egging him on. I'm guessing Gideon or Julie Powers will get Ramona's evil exes to reunite to fight Scott throughout his relationship (Gideon might have to use his Mind Control chip from the movies or something) Who knows, maybe with Julie Powers involved, she'll dethrone Gideon and become the final villain (with the use of Gideon's Glow given how it's somewhat of a reality warping ability as hinted by the game which Brian Lee Omalley was heavily involved in) Tl;dr - Gideon & Julie powers will pull some shenanigans for season 2 so that Ramona's exes become the bosses
As someone who is new to Scott Pilgrim and on the yonger side I thought it was great loved all the characters (especially Wallace) i only known stuff about it through just being on the Internet in general and i thought it would be kinda outdated but was pleasantly surprised .
Ya you should it will make the series feel much more rewarding. The movie is also very good hell it’s even in my top 5, even if it is just the comics but shorter
I genuinely can’t imagine being upset that we got something entirely new from the franchise rather than just another retread of the same story, the bait and switch really did make for a pretty great unexpected surprise.
I mean I guess I understand if some people bought a month of Netflix solely to see the comics animated then didn't get it, but really, the show was unlikely to ever surpass the comics so it was better to take the risk expanding on other characters instead of retreading old grounds. It's just too bad Lisa didn't fit into the new narrative.
@yaypeace3792 The point would be gauge expectations properly because Everyone thought that it will adapt the story of the comics Not everyone follows the Creators social media and judge things off trailers
My brother read Scott Pilgrim in high school and was trying to get me into it ever since. I have a difficult time with characters like Scott since it's hard for me to relate to them or see the good in them. I tried reading the books and thought they were ok. I watched the movie and didn't feel strongly on it one way or the other. I loved the show. I really like this He-Man Revelation style of reboot/reimagining/continuation.
SP was something I grew up with and something my gr00mer used to validate what he did to me. I've always held the series close but also held trauma with. I was so afraid to watch the new series till I watched the first part of this review. Thank you, this healed a part of me and salvaged my love for the series.
I’ll say I wish they didn’t lie, and I understand people disliking the lie, but the show itself was very well done but goodness I think they shot themselves in the foot with that in terms of public opinion 😅 Edit: lie is a strong word, a reply uses “bait and switch” which I agree is a better term
@@qseanferrigon3609 I guess lie is a strong word, more like misled the general audience with trailers into thinking this was the story of the comics. I know there were some announcements there the creators said it didn’t follow the comics but most people likely only saw the trailers and general announcements
New watcher here, I honestly enjoyed episodes 2-6 more than 1, 7 and 8. My favourite was episode 3 for obvious reasons and I hope that lil ninja gremlin gets herself a girlfriend at some point. I honestly didn't really get why Ramona and Scott was a thing at all, but since they speedran through that to get to the new stuff I was fine to just accept that there probably was something in other versions of the story. Weirdly... I didn't care about the mystery at all because I didn't care about Scott? It was just a neat backdrop to pushing Ramona to talk to her exes, and push most of their characters to develop too. Despite the gross stuff between her and Scott early on, I really loved Knives coming into her own as a talented musician.
It's good to read the comics or watch the movie to get the full picture but it isn't required. This was more of a what if scenario that showed how bad of a partner both Ramona and Scott were, especially in the finale. I definitely recommend the other medias.
As someone whose still in high school: I loved the show. My previous expirences with Scott Pilgrim was some of the comics when I was younger, but I love how the show chose to focus on Ramona and her exes unpacking their flaws instead of just focusing on the action. It was a fun time overall! Now I’m reading all of the original comics.
I watched this show with my brother together and we had zero knowledge of Scott Pilgrim prior to this show. I read all the novels and watched the movie after I finished the show and I love every single iteration of it. Its a really good show and I do like how they do things differently with it
Truth be told this was my first introduction to Scott Pilgrim. I’m in Highschool and me and several of my friends I’ve it. Most of them knew about it before this but for me it was new for me. Even tho I didn’t get some things at times it didn’t stop me from enjoying this. Everything was really nice to me story wise and visual wise. Idk if they’ll continue this series but I hope they do something more with this. I really enjoyed this 😊
I firmly believe that this show is enjoy fully if you read the comics, if you only watch the movie this may comes off as if only Ramona accepts her failures and Scott is only going along with everything. There are a lot of times, like when he apologies to Knives that left me asking: When did he learn this? If you read the comic you understand but only the anime will leave you confuse, or at least thats what I think.
NO! DON'T READ THE COMIC FIRST! I read the comic right before watching the anime and was devastated by the lack of depth and interaction between Ramona and Scott.
@@RailwayScholar I'm extremely confused. If you think the comics didn't have enough interaction between Scott and Ramona, why would you tell people not to read them first in favor of a show where they have much LESS interaction? Scott and Ramona only really interact in three episodes: an abridged retelling of book 1 with an alternate ending, the second half of the penultimate episode, and the finale. They barely spend any time together at all, since Scott is absent for five out of eight episodes. The anime makes your issue worse, unless it's being used to add depth and new interactions to a preexisting story.
@@RailwayScholar I read the comics when they were new & “Scott/Ramona got married, but Ramona remained essentially avoidant & Scott massively overreacted to relationship issues they had in their 30s” seems like a pretty realistic direction for them. I didn’t finish that story thinking that Scott/Ramona were perfect, but that they were going to try to work through their flaws together … and in this story, they are still doing that
@@TheJadedJames Did you remember the moment when Ramona said she needed some time to herself and Scott was completely fine with it? In fact it was Ramona who ended up bailing on him. Why would he then freak out completely at Ramona requesting the same thing again AFTER they got married? Maybe you should reread the comic, cuz "when they were new" is a pretty long time ago.
I’ve never seen or really heard of Scott pilgrim before watching the show and I just liked the feeling it had :) it was very relaxed and fun as well as having great animation and all the characters were really likeable
Newbie here, I heard in the past about Scott Pilgrim, mostly because of the re-release of the game and the memes, and I knew the general plot but I never dived deeper into it. It' only when I saw the series on my netflix homepage that I decided to give it a go thinking that it was a one to one adaptation of the comics, but I was soon proved wrong, and even if it was the first piece of Scott Pilgrim media that I consumed it didn't impact the overall enjoyment that I had watching the sieres, it was very mature in it's themes and most importantly it was REAL even under the anime superpowers coat that the show has, all the charachters felt like real people with real problems that aren't always perfect and that did their fair share of bullshit in the past, and even tho I'm only a teenager some of the characters and scenes spoke to me on a personal level. Right after finishing the last episode I went on to search for more Scott Pilgrim content, and I plan on reading the comics. Sorry for the bad english
Freaking love this animation! The only thing I found jarring was the setting felt late 90 early 00 but the dialogue was 2023 one example: Past Scott saying that Detective Pikachu was the greatest detective.
This reminds me of when I was reading the Scott Pilgrim comics circa 2010 and thinking that this story was going to feel outdated soon because of ‘90s video game aesthetic. (It would track for a for a 20 something in the 2000s to visualize the world like that. But what about the future where young people would have no idea what a chip tune is?) Now I’m in the future full of kids who grew up Stardew Valley and Undertale
I loved the bubblegum crisis reference Konyawa Hurricane is on my playlist also if you haven’t already watched bubblegum crisis go watch it and if you have then go watch it again
My only problem with this show is that it was advertised as an adaptaion and basically lied to market it to fans of the film and og books. This has happened before with Masters of the Universe where they played with peoples nostalgia. That being said this show is 100% fantastic but it just pissed people off for no reason and would've been so much better without the false advertising. I'd like to see both, a new angle of the story like they did here and an animated adaptation of the og story.
I like to think thing s would have been better with a 2 season story. Season 1 being the adaptation people want and then a surprise season 2 to continue the story proper.
Colouring your hair doesn't damage your hair, bleaching the roots as it grows does not either. Actually some colouring brands even do good to your hair. It gets fried if you bleach the same hair again and again, you can colour your hair for years every day and be healthy
in the animation, ramona *is* bleaching her hair every day (i do believe it is every day due to the other story bits, but it could be that some downtime isn't being shown.
I watched the show with my brothers and I remember thinking oh man this is going to be deeply nostalgic, but if they follow the same storyline, I’m just gonna be depressed at the end like some thing about the original narrative is really depressing to me. I think now at like 25 I really appreciated them filling out the world a bit. Giving Ramona screen time to express her feelings was really nice and made the whole dynamic seem a little less one-sided and honestly the arcs for the individual evil exes worked really well. Although I am extremely biased
You hit the nail on the head, excellent analysis of the show and thank you for clarifying that it was written in the way it was to form some kind of continuation to the existing media
even though ppl ignorantly throw out terms like 'grooming' with any age-gap relationship, i'll be the creep and point out that in the comics, it's very clear that scott is originally interested in knives genuinely prior to meeting ramona, and that they live in toronto (legal age of consent there is 16), if only because he's heartbroken by envy and wants a 'simple' relationship. also, his friends realistically DO chide scott -- 'male friends are concerned with how hot knives is' and envy the dynamic while female friends teasingly accuse him of being 'evil' and ask if he's being manipulative constantly. this is a very realistic depiction of how a friend group that's not sententious and performatively judgmental would react to a friend in that situation.
I loved SPTO and am happy it exists, but I really wish it was marketed as the AU story that it is. A trailer where we smash cut to Scott dying and then Ramona doing her whodunnit investigation stuff. Its a great concept! But there's elements of the comics that the movie just didn't capture, and I was really excited to see those finally animated - and episode 1 got all the vibes I wanted to see down SO WELL that its hard not to be disappointed when the show pulls that out from under me. I'm happy some people were able to find that surprise satisfying, but I couldn't. Yes, the comics still exist and I can return to them whenever - but I enjoy the medium of animation, and wanted to see those slice of life moments and an actual engaging Scott-Ramona relationship to be portrayed, versus the kinda cold one from the movie that was the result of them intending to ultimately have Scott get back together with Knives in the end. Its also annoying that complaints about the bait and switch somehow get viewed as not wanting SPTO to exist at all. I can want both an adaptation of the comics, AND an new adventure with these characters. Just be honest with me about which one we're getting, because they're fulfilling some fundamentally different desires. (And related side note: It also feels like they're doing Ramona kinda dirty. Like they didn't think people would be interested in a show starring her so that's not how they marketed it, when she's a great protagonist! When I say this show shoulda been called Ramona Flowers Takes Off or whatever, thats not derogatory - shes the heart of this story!)
@@RailwayScholar eh 🤨 the movie the comic and the new series still fail to address Scott dating a child it’s still super weird Also Ramona is objectively the more interesting character
@@rowanl3059it's literally clowned upon in the comic. People called him out on multiple occasions. They make it clear how much of a shitty person he's supposed to be. It's not flawed for being problematic.
Okay. I was 50-50 in watching this cos I never really liked the idea/theme of Scott's Pilgrim prior but you just made it feel more compelling and this version feels so much better? Rather, it's a more mature way to tell a story of it? Not that it was bad prior, just not my type of stories. Also I just mostly liked Ramona and it being focused on her for a bit instead of Scott is a big bias for sure haha.
I was so confused when Scott died But’ then i realized what they were doing and I actually didn’t mind it?! ✨ Animation is smooth af ! Captured the style of the book but actually better. I loved the books growing up but yeah my slightly mature side realizing too that there were …flaws. So nega Scott was not enough this was The ultimate generation self reflection. Great Review I agree 100% The show is not what we wanted, but it’s what we needed. ✨
Great review and analysis! I definitely agree that giving us a version of the story that pushes Ramona into the spotlight allows her character to be delivered and explored in a more full and interesting way, than in the comics. On the topic of the mystery, I don't think it's meant to be that important, especially when the answer ends up being "a robot vegan", which Ramona delivers with comical seriousness to highlight the absurdity of the situation. It's more of just a storytelling tool to force interaction and growth with Ramona and the exes, which it does well. However, clearing up a little misconception, Older Scott is not the original comic Scott. Bryan Lee O'Malley said "i think the anime timeline is its own thing. it comments on the book and movie, but it isn't meant to replace them. it's just a new iteration that starts at the beginning again." Older Scott can be read as a commentary on comic Scott or even movie Scott, but he isn't literally meant to be either of them. He's just the bad future of anime Scott. I'm not sure when the last time you read Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour was, but you may be misremembering some pretty substantial parts of the story, which is why I disagree so strongly with your point about the anime being an apology for the comic misrepresenting what relationships should be like: everything you praise about the finale was done in the comic, first. Scott and Ramona working together to attack a problem is exactly how they defeat Gideon, with both saving each other at different points, admitting their faults, and vowing to better themselves. Scott seeing the failures of his past is shown very directly in his encounter with Nega Scott (which we're never told happened to Older Scott) and earning the Power of Understanding, against Gideon. Ramona picking Scott regardless of the troubles that they'll face as a couple is shown when she takes up the Power of Love and is the entire point of their conversation, after the battle. Ramona realizing that she was also a bad partner happens the first time Scott dies. There is no "growing up" or "apologizing" from Scott Pilgrim Takes Off's messages because ultimately, every major message it does give is repeated almost directly from the source material. The real growing up is in the specific way it chooses to deliver those messages, resolving the situations with Ramona's exes and Even Older Scott peacefully, committing to the message of it never being too late to clean up a mess, even harder than the original comic ever did. Very happy you enjoyed and recommended the series! It really is one of those shows that people who pay attention always have something interesting and thoughtful to say about.
I agree that the show was great. It gave all of the characters besides Scott a chance to breathe and develop on their own, and by the time of the epilogue it seems that pretty much everyone is much better off for it.
I read the series as a teenager and really enjoyed the movie, but I think Takes Off is my favorite. I get being a little put off if you were expecting the original story retold, but at the same time, that's been done. The movie stuck (overall) pretty close to the source material, and I think another retelling wouldn't work as well today for some pretty obvious reasons. I love that this really felt like a continuation of the graphic novels. The vibes were perfect, and the new material helps further flesh out the characters and keeps it from getting stale.
I'm gonna say something weird because I had the exact same confusion you did about Scott dating a Knives. I had read the comic and saw the movie as a kid so I didn't think about it then. But now I was confused why it wasn't taken more seriously since Knives is 17 and Scott is 24. After all, isn't that a crime. One rabbit hole later and it turns out it isn't, which is offputting. Canada's age of consent for "non-exploitative sex" is 16. It is only lower if the older party is like a teacher or a doctor. It is only 18 if the person is appearing in a porno. That is messed up. But it's even weirder because apparently it's that way in the states. Even my home state has it at 17. So, yeah. It's fucked up, but the reason it isn't treated as a crime is because it oddly isn't. Weird, right? I just thought it was 18 everywhere.
as someone who didn’t read the comics before watching this show i have been hyperfixated on this for a while and reading the comics only made me like the story more :0 also matthew patel best character
I’m 17 read it when I was 15 and I adore Scott pilgrim, I think their being so many gay characters is partially oh my god is that a gay guy but also their just existing. Like Ramona having a girlfriend is fine and Wallace is not dating Scott or interested at all but he’s just a gay guy and he falls into some stereotypes but there is literally another gay guy who subverts em’. The dismissal of Roxie being phase is weird and 2000y but people do experiment in college and Romonas insistence on them being “roommates” is fault that’s adddressed in the show. Yeah a guy being gay isn’t surprising but a background character just being gay and that being totally normal in a big franchise is incredible especially in the days of Disney’s first gay character
Also bro cannot emphasize enough Scott figures out dating a high schooler is bad, SPVTW is about Scott growing as a person. He’s dating a high schooler as rebound for his girlfriend from two years ago. Scott suuuucks but being with Ramona and breaking up with her changes him and lets him confront his past and ex’s and his problems the show is Ramonas form of that. The comics had some weird stuff but were also not saying knives and Scott were a good couple Ramona and Scott are girl fail couple goals
Scott pilgrim to me is kind of like a fairy tale (least on the queer side of the story). the way the characters treat queerness like it's casual and not a big deal i enjoy that, how it's handled is very refreshing. i grew up in a very conservative lifestyle, so being able to how Wallace and Roxie are handled like actual people almost feels unreal. especially since a lot more recent show's go out of there way to let you know that a character is 'the gay one' in short this story spoke to me and i will be looking into it more
You know what, after seeing this video, I'm actually beginning to calm down about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off It cleared up a lot of stuff for me and now, I might watch the series again
im a highschooler and i was introduced to scott pilgrim with the anime and fell inlove i plan to read the comics eventually, but when i first watched it i was surprised how casual they made being gay to be and it was refreshing cuz homophobia still exists but its not like i was blown away they were gay more like blown away they werent making it the main point or just the ability to make it feel relatable if that makes any sense
Not everyone has the time and patience to read. Movies and/or other forms of adaptations makes it more palatable for audiences. If they wind up really liking what they saw, they can go deeper if they want into the source material and possibly get way more out of it. I see that as a win. But this is where adaptations being made to introduce potential new fans to the property vs "making something for the fans" get murky.
I'd like to point out that Bryan Lee OMalley worked on this story. Like he wanted to expand the Scott Pilgrim cinematic universe with this show. I do agree its a little eyerolling and dragging a bit in the movie-set episodes. But i look at it as a love letter so the comic and movie. Its so much fun! Exciting! Satisfying! Not to mention it really fleshes out the characters a little more so you love them that much more. And also the Todd's gay awakening had me dying and not much makes me laugh. AND THE ANIMATION OMG ACK-
Personally I would have preffered this be a two season story. Season 1 focusing on the original story and actually retelling it, but then having season two focusing on Ramona and actually giving her the development she didn't get, possibly having it focused more around the idea that Ramona was actually the one who never personally grew as a person and eventually leading Scott who tried his best before coming to the mistaken conclusion that he was the problem and not her. This forces present Ramona to get a long and hard look at the consequences of her actions in a more present sense instead of simply looking back on them, as well as seeing just what her actions will lead to if she doesn't truly try and grow as a person like what was intended. To me that would be way better than the story we did get which feels more like they took the original message of the story, slapped it onto Ramona instead, took out Scott who the story is supposed to be about, and then reveal that Scott never actually developed and matured during his original timeline whihc undermines the story as a whole.
I remember watching the movie a couple times a really long time ago, long enough to completely forget 80% of it and enjoying it for being another funny movie with funny actors- then I met SP fans occasionally saying "the comic was better" and sharing panels from it. And me thinking the art was cool. Maybe if I had seen the movie a little later when I was more aware of my own geekiness I'd have understood the greatness of it.
Yup I was very confused when first watching all this but kinda expected the comic version cause I did read the first comic in High school when I stumbled upon it. But my school didn’t have a lot of comics or manga available at the time so I moved on continuing watching my anime I liked. I really love the art animation style and everything is so smooth and amazing I had to watch again to catch all the details. By the end of the series this remix of the comic turned out really good.
everyone has their own opinion but im just gonna throw mine out there and say that as a long time scott pilgrim fan I absolutely enjoyed the show along with its changes to the story, I also liked how they gave the side characters a lot more screen time and story, and finally I love how the exes were more likable and how they turned good in the end, just an amazing story throughout!
This show was my introduction to Scott Pilgrim, and I think it was amazing. I loved the casualty of everything, I loved the way it was so calm and comforting even though it had a plot, a mystery, great fight scenes, and everything. The animation was cute, Ramona was amazing, the weird time paradox stuff was really cool, the scenes of Ramona dying her hair might be my favorite thing ever, the way characters interacted was great. It just felt so calm and casual and the way magic was so normal was fascinating because I've never really seen any form of media which had something like that.
As someone who’s introduction was this show, it was great. I related a lot to the cast as a person in their early twenties who hasn’t really figured out the whole “life” things yet and would probably be seen as a loser in society’s eyes. The top teir production quality, good music, compelling characters. It was really fun and I was happy to see so much queer representation in one place. I’m excited to get into the comics and it’s made me a fan. One of my favorite things when watching was this finding all the retro video game references since it’s jam packed with those
The scene where Kim and Roxie kissed each other is smooth.

I feel like that "scott isn't the same as the comics" part is bs, mainly bc of two reasons:
1. Some people were hard hating on it, so maybe he felt it was backfiring and said "hey, lets pretend its not the same one, haha"
So basically…
Scott Pilgrim is western Evangelion.
@@woops9076 i'd compare it more to he legend of zelda timeline, or even what Mortal Kombat 9 did
I don't know about other countries, but in Spain they even got the movie's original dub actors too. They went above and beyond
I was wondering about that, that’s amazing to hear!
In america too
Once I realized it was an extension of the comics, I really enjoyed the show. Focusing on Ramona and the Ex's was a great move. I do find it weird that the Twins got no screen time, when all the other Ex's got entire episodes. Hard agree as well that this show definitely feels like a post-divorce O'Malley revisiting his characters older and wiser. A couple of additional personal high points:
- Envy's big Kill La Kill Kiryuin energy when she crashes the funeral.
- Knives and Kim are in their video game outfits for the final episode (Knives' black outfit, scarf and red streak, Kim in her stripped black and white coat). Stephen and Wallace might be as well, its harder to see.
- Playing the midboss music from the video game during the Old Scott fight.
It's not o mally confirmed that the anime is its own thing and every Scott Pilgrim project is all in different universes
As someone who grew up with 90's CCM, I lost it when Envy started singing the Amy Grant song. Definitely the last thing I was expecting to hear 🤣
@@jaydenlopez3636 That.... ruins alot tbh. Kinda makes the whole thing feel like a waste of time then?
@@FloridianDemonComics no it really doesn't have you heard of a phrase call character assassination if it's a sequel then it involves that but since it's own thing it doesn't involve that.
The twins are treated as a joke in all adaptations
I personally feel like Scott Pilgrim takes off is a love letter to the series well also heavily develops lots of the characters that never got focused on both in the movie and the comic.🐱
The anime developed the evil exes a lot but as a return barely developed Scott and Ramona. If you want to see Scott's and Ramona's love story instead of Todd's and Wallace's you should read the comic.
@@RailwayScholar exactly, the film, comics and game focus mostly on Scott, and this series is a nice change and actully let's other characters have some spotlight. you don't like it and just wanted the same or similar Scott filled adventure? you have 3 other pieces of media that do that
@@connorradcliffe1769 But not an animated series. And that's what we wanted all along.
Wtf do you people see as a love letter? This was a butchering for all intents and purposes
Nice point there ^^

Another point that adds to this idea is the weapon of choice of the two different Scotts. In the comic, he uses the sword of empathy, going with the theme that he manages to learn how to look outside of himself and understand other people. On the other hand, movie Scott gets the sword of self-respect, namely, he's learned that he's right, and that all he really needs to do is double down on backing himself. One of these epiphanies is going to be more prone to the sorts of errors that Old Scott made than the other.
@@tylorhobbs8920 And I believe I know which one
2. Gideon (Gordon) Graves
3. Roxie Ritcher
4. Lucas Lee
5. Todd Ingram
6. & 7. Kyle & Ken
At first Patel was just a tutorial character and having him presumably beat Scott made his move to question the whole league make a lot of sense since wtf was the Leauge gonna do if they defeated Scott, get with Ramona? I don’t think so
We got more of Matthew Patel in episode 2 alone than in both the book and the movie combined.
Ayo, just went on the same journey!
Felt like a lot all at once, but it was the enjoyable kind of 'a lot'!
To be fair, in the movie Scott's friends were constantly on his ass about leading Knives on.
only kim really- and she goes against that in the comics..
I was expecting a 1-2 adaptation, the kind that picks the original work and adapts it enhancing it's aspects and, with that said, I loved the animation, they made an entire new story that delivers the same and then more. God it was so great.

12:03 I really like that future future Scott isn't just an Evil Ex, he's an Evil Ex-Husband. (As far as he's concerned)
Yeah but an evil ex husband who went through that emotional finale from the comic where Scott and Ramona learn the exact same lessons as in the anime finale. I just don't understand how the divorce happened.
@thefkey6241 Scott never grew up is why the got divorced. Ultimately that was the main problem
@@icedragonkid1480 But he did learn his lessons though. Except if the anime goes off a whole different universe where Scott didn't learn anything. If so, my question remains: why?
@@RailwayScholar I would guess that the lesson is lose isn't easy and sometimes people divorce.
@@icedragonkid1480 but in the series the whole divorce wasn't even intentional, just a result of severe and out of character miscommunication.
I get you, I like the analogy. But I can't stop thinking about how authentic Italian food in Italy isn't all that good either.

Same ^^
I'm actually loving that fact myself
I don't think it's so much of a bad thing when you consider a potential second season, which Bryan himself doesn't confirm nor deny it at this moment and the mid-credit scene does appear to hint at it. I'm interested to see what kinda different spin on the original "Scott vs The League Of The Seven Exes" narrative set up they could possibly pull off since it appears that most, if everyone in the league has come to terms with their loss and move on in this iteration of the storyline.
@@GuyWhoLikesTheSnarkies1435 Yeah ^^
I could go with a second season too
@@GuyWhoLikesTheSnarkies1435I was thinking about what season 2 could potentially be about given what SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS Gideon says at the end alongside Julie Powers egging him on.
I'm guessing Gideon or Julie Powers will get Ramona's evil exes to reunite to fight Scott throughout his relationship (Gideon might have to use his Mind Control chip from the movies or something)
Who knows, maybe with Julie Powers involved, she'll dethrone Gideon and become the final villain (with the use of Gideon's Glow given how it's somewhat of a reality warping ability as hinted by the game which Brian Lee Omalley was heavily involved in)
Tl;dr - Gideon & Julie powers will pull some shenanigans for season 2 so that Ramona's exes become the bosses

Should've be honest upfront
I mean I guess I understand if some people bought a month of Netflix solely to see the comics animated then didn't get it, but really, the show was unlikely to ever surpass the comics so it was better to take the risk expanding on other characters instead of retreading old grounds.

Yeah, if you've never read the comics or watched movie you wouldn't get the point of their relationship.
It's good to read the comics or watch the movie to get the full picture but it isn't required.
This was more of a what if scenario that showed how bad of a partner both Ramona and Scott were, especially in the finale.
I definitely recommend the other medias.
Part of me Hope's if Roxie does get a girlfriend if a hypothetical season 2, they'd get Sarah-Nicole Robles to voice her
As someone whose still in high school: I loved the show.
I’m new to Scott Pilgrim, so I was so confused when he turned into coins….

Kind of a hard song to find, or at least the version used for the English dub.
Only plebs want a Ramona, a real connoisseur wants a Lisa Miller

Colouring your hair doesn't damage your hair, bleaching the roots as it grows does not either. Actually some colouring brands even do good to your hair. It gets fried if you bleach the same hair again and again, you can colour your hair for years every day and be healthy

even though ppl ignorantly throw out terms like 'grooming' with any age-gap relationship, i'll be the creep and point out that in the comics, it's very clear that scott is originally interested in knives genuinely prior to meeting ramona, and that they live in toronto (legal age of consent there is 16), if only because he's heartbroken by envy and wants a 'simple' relationship.
also, his friends realistically DO chide scott -- 'male friends are concerned with how hot knives is' and envy the dynamic while female friends teasingly accuse him of being 'evil' and ask if he's being manipulative constantly. this is a very realistic depiction of how a friend group that's not sententious and performatively judgmental would react to a friend in that situation.

I mean no one was ever happy about scott dating knives but i geuss they never really did anything outside of saying the occasional off hand comment.
The final episode was amazing also shoutout to the animators for the Yu Yu hakusho reference.
ramona dyes her hair every week and a half I think if you watch the movie she specifically says that so yeah I think her hair should be good
10:04 what should’ve been. If they want to make continuation, they should’ve made another comic
I love your videos, your animated sprite is super cool ❤ also ngl that Patreon plug caught me off guard 😂
I feel like they wasted their opportunity. And if they wanted to tell something that was different, they should’ve made that into a comic first.
I really enjoyed the show and I've only seen the movie I heard from a lot of people to read the comic
as someone who didn’t read the comics before watching this show i have been hyperfixated on this for a while and reading the comics only made me like the story more :0 also matthew patel best character
It was fun show can wait for season 2
The comics had some weird stuff but were also not saying knives and Scott were a good couple Ramona and Scott are girl fail couple goals
good damn why does that look so good? How are literally all the girl just perfectly waifu-able?
Scott pilgrim to me is kind of like a fairy tale (least on the queer side of the story). the way the characters treat queerness like it's casual and not a big deal i enjoy that, how it's handled is very refreshing. i grew up in a very conservative lifestyle, so being able to how Wallace and Roxie are handled like actual people almost feels unreal. especially since a lot more recent show's go out of there way to let you know that a character is 'the gay one'
in short this story spoke to me and i will be looking into it more
You know what, after seeing this video, I'm actually beginning to calm down about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off
It cleared up a lot of stuff for me and now, I might watch the series again
im a highschooler and i was introduced to scott pilgrim with the anime and fell inlove i plan to read the comics eventually, but when i first watched it i was surprised how casual they made being gay to be and it was refreshing cuz homophobia still exists but its not like i was blown away they were gay more like blown away they werent making it the main point or just the ability to make it feel relatable if that makes any sense
I’m waiting for a season 2
People who never read the comics but watch the movie amaze me. They're missing so much. I read the comics before I watched a movie.
AND THE ANIMATION OMG ACK-
I need a second season!!!
Yes, this show IS great.
This is my first real exposure to Scott Pilgrim, and I loved it. Comedy, action, characters, story, all great really
My introduction was the 2010 movie. Never heard of Scott Pilgrim before the movie
everyone has their own opinion but im just gonna throw mine out there and say that as a long time scott pilgrim fan I absolutely enjoyed the show along with its changes to the story, I also liked how they gave the side characters a lot more screen time and story, and finally I love how the exes were more likable and how they turned good in the end, just an amazing story throughout!
