    my special just-won-the-lottery “troll relic” is a fender custom shop with _squire_ badges (so early 80s strat) that was refin’d using thick (brush applied) house paint enamel in gloss white, heavy relic’d, had a floyd rose trem and routing for humbuckers installed, then _removed_ then lightly set on fire, had the neck replaced with the wrong model (another squire), then refinished perfectly in some high-early-2000s colour finish, heavy relic’d, original squire pickups put in.

    Historic Makeovers does the best Les Paul relicing I've seen. You can buy another R7/R8 for what they charge, but they look amazing. The work they do adds a premium to a guitar too. Most of the time you lose money when you beat up a guitar.

    MJT, Guitar Mill, Starr Guitars, Bloomdoom are my favorites for partscaster piece finishes. How good the guitar itself ends up depends on the quality of the other parts and the skill of the assembler/tech. Even pros like Glaser will do the hard part for you. I like it when they are just a tiny bit reliced. They don't look factory new, they will wear with play, and you won't cry if you ding them.

  • @honkytonkinson9787

    I’ve had the same strat for 20 years. It has a poly finish, so it ages weird. Some of the pick guard screws are rusty, noticeable fret wear, and some chips out of the finish on the body, but from across the room looks brand new
    I’ve seen some hate online for people who have a relic’d guitar that has a poly finish, claiming it’s not real wear.
    Guitarists can be so shallow sometimes. Or maybe they aren’t really guitarists spreading all the hate online. Go play your dang guitar!

    I think regarding the PRS relic thing, for me anyway, Fender/Gibson or for similar style guitars (Dano, Nash ect) there are proper old vintage examples from the 50's and 60's with real wear and checking. These vintage guitars pretty much started the whole relic culture in the first place due to the vintage ones being unobtainable for most people. The oldest original PRS's would have been poly for many many years, as well as being really beauitful and expensive guitars, so I doubt there is many old PRS's with any level of actual wear because of that. As such it feels a bit wrong to do one with wear falsely because its unlikely it would have happened. That's my feeling anyway.

If someone pays honest money that they worked hard for ,. to someone else ( like say a Luthier) to put in honest work which results in making a newer instrument feel like, and appear like a. well worn and well loved classic instrument that costs 10 times more , MORE than the newer thing then what's wrong with that?

    I have a relic Kauer Banshee that was finished by Partsocaster. Love the color and the parts choices, but the relic job isn’t so great. They started by doing a terrible initial paint job, then over aging the parts. I guess they figured the relic would obscure the amateurish paint job, but it obviously started with massive orange peel and they didn’t bother to scrape a clean line on the binding. I love the guitar in spite of that. The Factory finishes by Kauer are stellar, so I imagine Doug Kauer was less than thrilled by the work he subbed out to Partsocaster.

    couple things I’m 3/4 away through and you guys have not mentioned Historic Makeovers which makes me feel really bad for Kim who runs it. He was doing the absolute best Les Paul relicsfor years before murphy lab existed.
    I have three of them they’re among the best guitars I own and I have a Murphy labs r54 gt and his are just as good if not better because he relics every piece subtly-even the plastics unlike Murphy lab that just sticks off the rack knobs, which always shocked me you have to go to 59 parts to put proper relic knobs on a Murphy lab that’s heavy aged?!
    and its not better than kims stuff. Also, I live near Lark Guitar in Santonio and a couple years ago high up on the wall they had a relict, super high-end 594 mccarty- was pretty cool. I played it for a minute it had a weird kind of “this isn’t supposed to exist” vibe about it but it was cool and somebody paid big bucks for it so I don’t know how they got paul to do it?

    People are like "buy. anew guitar,.. and relic it yourself",.not realizing that most instruments have been poly finished since the late 1960/s ( Fender started Poly around 68 ).
    So NOOOOO,.you wont be making your NEW instrument look like a Murphy Lab unless it happened to be Nitro ( Gibson does still do this, btw).
    Other then that,..a Pre-CBS strat in your hands mean you'll have to sell your Corvette.

I mean, I have a 1978 thru neck Ibanez Musician I've been playing since 1981 and that's so relic'd now, I'm amazed the British Museum hasn't stolen it lol. Anyway, if you like the new trend for relics or not, it's no big deal. Rumour has it that Gibson and Fender QC deliberately allows accidental relics to fly past them and into customers hands, with "factory relic'd" finishes as a free bonus 😂

      The Fender Custom Shop started building Relics in 1995 so it was approximately the same time that the Internet was going mainstream. Although, I never had the Internet at home until around 2001, and I never owned a brand new “aged” guitar until a few years after Fender started making the Road Worn Mexican models.

    To me relics mean two things: ease of mind playing as dings etc are irrelevant and it should have a great worn in neck

    I dig the end product, but what I dislike is the way its presented... I feel like they try and diminish what's special about vintage instruments and assert it's nothing more than specs that can be remade and wear that can be replicated. I'm old enough to remember a world before all this when if you saw a guitar that beat up the hair on the back of your neck would stand up cuz you knew it must be special to have been played that much.... now a guitar like that goes unnoticed because it's lost in a sea of imitations... the whole look has just become white noise... like a song you loved at first until it got played on the radio so much that now you can't stand it.

    • @terryshrk
      @terryshrk 9 місяців тому

      That called "advertising " or "marketing" and everything on our consumer society is "presented' this way.
      Everything from Mustangs to cell phones are sold in this manor,..LoL
      And,...if you actually listen to any custom shop luthier,..they'll tel you flat out. Most if not many so-called "vintage " instruments" are actually not all that good nor are they super consistent .
      A modern "relic" custom shop type instrument gives you EXACTLY the level of "distress" you want with what's likely a much better made instrument

    • @MayorMcCheese2000
      @MayorMcCheese2000 9 місяців тому +1

      @terryshrk you somehow missed absolutely everything I said..... the assertion that this is the only way these could be advertised or marketed is just absurd. Clearly you hold nothing sacred and are exactly the kind of person I was referencing in my first comment. You go ahead and do you, I'm not the kinda person that holds any "custom shop luthier" in very high esteem, so you'll forgive me for having standards.

      @@MayorMcCheese2000 agree completely. All these expert relic heroes are not artists, they're simply overpaid vandals sucking the life out of real mojo with a power sander and an old toilet chain.

    I got a better idea. How about buy the guitar, tweak it the way you want then play it a lot for many years. Then you’ll have a “real” relic guitar, one with all your hard work, screw ups and vibe that you created. Then you can look back at all those chips, scratches, cigarette burn marks that look pretty cool now but remember how pissed you were when you did them. Just remember why you wanted to play guitar in the first place, make music.
