I think the problem we have is that we're chasing a tone that was created in a studio with tons of expensive equipment and we want it with a $500 amp and a few pedals.
And a room full of human bodies is very much not great for tone but it is the goal, so you have to compromise on tone anyways.
I've been in some of the most high-end studios in the world. They have equipment and engineers that can make a transistor radio sound like a wall of Soldanos. A Deluxe Reverb and a few pedals is often more than enough for a producer and sound engineer to make studio magic. But what too many naive players fail to realize is how different the studio is to a live environment. You are never going to get the ultimate tone in a bedroom, garage or club. Studios are designed to capture tone and manipulate it to perfection.
Agreed. My favorite guitar amp today is my Fender Deluxe Reverb reissue. It is indestructible. I've played with it multiple times on a Mardi Gras float, rolling down the parade route over god-awful New Orleans streets for 6 miles, as well as club gigs and even smaller auditoriums. My favorite experience with it occurred during Mardi Gras one year. The float my band was on was being pulled by a pickup truck, which took a curve a little too sharply and swung the float into a major pothole. The Fender Deluxe Reverb bounced out, (as did the beer cooler, but that's another story) and landed on St Charles avenue. We stopped and got the amp back on board, and it was as if nothing had happened, minus a few scratches. It still sounded (and sounds) great.

I haven't played a ton of different amps over the years but I do love Fender amps. I used to own a really good sounding blonde Blues Junior that I had to sell as a poor graduate student. I wish I still owned it! I do very much like my Quilter 101 reverb however. Enough so that I would like to have a Cub US or a Superblock. I don't hear a massive or meaningful difference at all, and can completely understand why many people are ditching tubes. I would never have chosen a solid state amp a few years ago. Now they make more sense to me. The 101 reverb has a feel to it that I like and a lot of tonal versatility. Great platform amp as well for pedals.
As a Marshall Fanboy the next amp on my list is a Deluxe Reverb. I don't have a problem. I don't have a problem. I don't have a problem.
The Fender reliability issue generally holds true for bass amps, I played on a '68 Bassman for years. Now I have 2 Fender Rumbles, a Bugera, a GK stack and a Euphonic Audio combo. The Fenders never fail, ever. I used to gig with the GK but it started having problems so I gig exclusively with the Rumble 500. Thanks guys

Fender HRD, Super Sonic and Prosonic here. I like hearing other people use Marshalls...but for me, Fender is where it's at.

I got 3 Fenders, always a great sound. I’ve used them for practing at home, rehearsals and live gigs.
At our rehearsal hall I play through one of the new Pro Reverbs. It’s a 1 12” all tube good old fashioned Fender. With a few pedals I can make it sound like anything. It’s a terrific amplifier. Just is.
I agree. I have been through and own a lot of different boutique amps but when I head out to do a show, almost always it's a Deluxe Reverb or a Princeton for me. I also play through a Allen Amp - Sweet Spot time to time which is kinda like a princeton on steroids.
Recently bought a "very used" Les Paul Studio. The guy I bought it from later sold me a Fender 412 Amp. The Les paul sounds absolutely GREAT through the Fender Amp. I also have a Vox AC15 but the Fender sounds amazing

My first tube amp was a Blues Junior. I gave it to a friend as a gift. He’s trying to learn to play. I got the chance to play it again recently and it really is just a great amp. I was listening to the guy from Amplified Nation and it was giving me serious GAS. Anyone have an opinion on Two Rock vs Amplified Nation?
The 4x10 Hot Rod Deville is an amazing Fender amp too. It can, of course, get crazy loud, but it sounds so big even at low volumes.
I actually bought a new tube combo amp recently, after about 6 months of going back and forth between a few different amps, one being a Fender, another being an Orange, and the last being a Marshall, and I was about to go with the Fender because I thought like you guys said, it would have the most range out of the three... but then when I plugged in to the Fender I just couldn't get the sounds I wanted, I felt very limited and like I was wading through mud, unable to get the sparkle and crunch I desired. I ended up going for the Marshall origin 50, but then I upgraded the speaker to a hempback... I can't imagine how an amplifier could sound any better... all the bite of the Marshall that you want, but that speaker just rolls off the ice picks and opens up a whole world of warm and rich tones when you wanna dial down. I always felt like Fenders were great clean, but didn't have enough balls to get into Black Sabbath territory, and never felt like Marshalls cleaned up that well, but speakers are so important, and I think a Marshall with a hempback has a lot more range than a Fender, but I literally couldn't be more biased.
Have to admit man.. The Fender Hotrod Deluxe. !! Not the most expensive amp but I love it. Love it with pedals! Amazing amp
Couldn't agree more! But I'm sure we'll also all agree that some Fender amps are better than others. My BFF lives an hour away and I go to visit him, my parents, and his early 70's Super Reverb with equal anticipation for all.
In August I had a gig out of town. Rented a Princeton and had great tone in about 10 seconds.
My original 64 Super Reverb is the only amp I will never get rid of. Sweetness!
I had a Blues Junior III but traded it on a guitar. Now I have a Bassbreaker 007 FSR tweed combo with a 10" Greenback. I like it more than most of my other amps. I have 4 low power Marshalls and the BB sounds more like a Marshall than they do LOL

Super reverbs are awesome
Being British I love Marshall and Vox. I live 15 minutes away from the original Vox offices and factory in Dartford. People don’t appreciate Gibson’s properly until they hear them through a tube Marshall, and Rickenbacker’s and Gretsches are iconic through Vox.
The truth is I’ve not had much luck with Fender products.
Do yourself a favor and look into Hamstead....a British boutique amp...made Rabea and Danish Pete of Anderton's wet their pants a few years ago. I have one...as does my son. Mine shares the room with a new ToneKing Imperial MKII...great and versatile...but envies the affection I show my Artist 20RT combo.
GREAT talk guys, I love Fender amps! My first amp was a Vibro- Champ. I Bought it in '78 and still own it. The best sounding amp I ever owned was a '64 Princeton Reverb, I'm still kicking my ass for selling it 30 years later. I'm considering buying a reissue, maybe a hand-wired model. But I own a Princeton and a Deluxe Reverb, a Marshall Studio and an Orange Rocker 30 with a 2X12 Cab. I think I got the Orange while getting my oil changed. But my favorites are the Vibro-Champ and the Deluxe Reverb. My 335 and Deluxe are a match made in Heaven.
There's a reason so many 5 watt amps are champ copies...Leo got it right to begin with
Love my fender amps! 64 bandmaster 80 watt yes 4 6L6’s! 65 Bassman, 78 bassman 70, and a 76 champ. Also have a couple Hiwatts they are very similar to the fenders.
I currently have a number of fenders in my lineup, including a '71 super bassman and a '74 champ, but one of my favorite toys right now is an '83 yale reverb, a single channel solid state amp from the rivera era, it does the chimey/warm cleans perfectly and pushes 50 watts through a 12" but is about the size of a princeton...fender's past/present catalogue is so massive, there's something for every occasion
I’ve become a Carr amp guy lately..love my super bee and impala by Carr …but my 68 super reverb is still my favorite
It's the Fender Greta all night long.crank it up bed side, no problem. 2 Watts of tube glory & fits on a shelf. With speaker & line out makes perfect inexpensive head.
I bought the super sonic head just because it has that fender sound with an effects loop.
With the right pedals you can make a Fender sound like just about anything, but nothing else can sound like a Fender no matter what pedal you use...🤘😎🎸
The best sound amp i ever heard was a Fender Bassman 50 watt tube amp built back in the 70’s. I own a Fender Mustang Iii V2 that sounds almost as good. fender has come a long way and I understand that the new Tone Master is as good as the old tubes.
Getting back to playing. My parents sold my Mustang and Princeton when I was away at college in ‘71. Why did I say, “Okay”? But I digress. Saw the first Star Wars at Fox Studios, pre-release screening for USC students and we were all really high. But I digress even more. So I got a Yamaha lunch box from Sweetwater. And in a minute, I knew it was headed back. Clean, but didn’t touch that itch. Saw the Mustang GTX50, liked what I read, and the “sales engineer” tried over and over to talk me out of it and go Boss. I stood firm and even though, at the time, modeling amps got short shrift, it put me on the road to a lot of Fender’s amps and now, three years later, I see were Fender was headed and the crowd is getting in line for ToneMaster goodness. As a practice amp, and modeling entry, the Mustang is clean, is dirty, very light, versatile, has a fine 12” speaker, can fill a crowded barroom with noise, all at a great price.

Fender inspired is more my thing. Allen Old Flame (Super Reverb inspired) and Suhr Bella Reverb are my amps. So dreamy and springy :)
My dad bought a 67 Vibrolux Reverb and a 66 Mustang at a pawnshop in the early 70's for $200. I still have both and have been exclusively using the Vibrolux Reverb since 1982. I've never heard another amp that I like better. Of course, that's one guys opinion. Your mileage may vary.

My favorite Fender alternative is a '70s era Yamaha G100-212 Series II. Co designed by Paul Rivera, it's very, very Fendery. I keep thinking of selling it, but I plug in and think, Nope, I'm keeping it.
Of course I wish I'd kept all the Fender amps I've owned over the years, but the Yamaha just works!
How about the often overlooked Blues Deluxe Reissue? Classic Fender tweed tone, big, full sound even at low volume your neighbors will love. It’s great!
Nothing better than a super reverb
For my taste in music, mostly blues, Fender is it. Always has and always will be. One non Fender I absolutely regard as being on par for what I like to listen to (blues) is the rare Marshall Club and Country. For me Fender is king.

I've had a Super-Sonic for about a year now and it's my best amp. I have other tube amps for other purposes (Orange, Blackstar) but if I could only have one, it would be the Fender.
I got a solid state 100w Champion that cost what, 350 or so? Great clean sound and pedal platform, all kinds of modeling voices, very portable and more than enough volume. I have a Randall RG 100 stack, a Marshall and Orange half stack and I would gig with the Fender for the reasons listed. And at 300 and change if damaged or stolen its not the end of the world.
I wish peavey were still making amps to compete with fender. Tried an HRD and hated it, sold it for an AC15 which I liked but only did one thing, sold it for a classic 30 and I am in my happy place
I recently acquired a 1990 "Red Knob" Fender "The Twin". I got it beat up, but it still fired up and blew the roof of my house..... at 2 on the volume.

Fender amp history is pretty interesting, compared to other brands, imo. Leo was definitely not afraid to innovate, and I would say Fender definitely leads the way in that area to this day, though they do make a lot of stinkers!
I don’t get the blues junior love though. Maybe I had a bad one; whatever they were making in 2004. To loud for bedroom jamming and not loud enough for drums, only sounded good cranked. Back then big amps were in though

1:06 😂That tends to be the case. Same with a Boss Katana. Sounds like an amp by itself but blend it with another player using Fender tube amps and it just doesn't cut it.
And yes, the Prequels are great and we love them now that The Last Jedi begat Rise of Skywalker. And then they made the Obi-wan series. Attack of the Clones rulz now. 😂

If it weren't for Fender amps, there would be no Marshall, no Mesa/Boogie, no Dumble. Those legendary amps all started out as modified Fenders.

The Hot Rod series is a good amp, but no one who owns one would call it reliable.
The whole thing about Fender being great because you know it only works if you do know it. I went from Peavey's to Vox, so that sort of familiarity for me is when I plug into a vox. Fenders sound great but I don't really have that much experience with them.
I had a Fender Princeton Reverb Blackface Reissue and it sounded wonderful, BUT it did not interact well with pedals, often sounding like a Tea Kettle at the boil... Traded it for a Mesa Boogie Filmore 50 and never looked back... sorry guys...
I've never found a Fender amp that I liked the sound of. Great for clean tones, but I play mid/high gain most of the time. Give me an angry dimed Marshall JCM type tone. I rely on the amp for distortion, not pedals.
I have to say the "look and feel" of the new studio just lacks the appeal of the old one.

No argument here. I'd put my 65 Fender Princeton Reverb "Cleans" up against anything. Tones like: SRV Riviera Paradise.

They need to fix the hiss and hum from their new amps, quality of components is cheap and construction and design is poor compared to other brands , it’s a buyers market & you get what you pay for .

i really dont like the hot rod deluxe for me it doesn't have that real fender quality.ive a tweed the 15 watt original and rn it with a pro reverb using a radial aby switch .pure heaven just kick the tweed on like a overdrive pedal
Sigh. I will take an AC30 any day, night, week, month, year, minute, or second over a Fender. There is just nothing that has the natural distortion than a Vox to me. If you need a pedal to make an amp shine then things are backwards there. I'm not saying I hate Fenders though. I think when other people play them they sound absolutely amazing but my own personal hands can not just get the sound that other people get from them. Then I plug in a Vox and I automatically feel like I'm home. Pedals or no pedals. With Fender it's always like "oh this PLUS a TS9 is awesome" or "this PLUS a Blues Driver is awesome". Seems like very few players just plug straight into a Fender. Probably country players but even they at least use compressors with their Teles. Even Claptons old Twins are modded by Dumble.
Tab Beniot plugs straight into a I think 70s twin and dimes it a tele thinline deluxe straight into the front of it . I was front row and it was glorious blew my head off but he’s the only guy I’ve seen plugged straight into a fender amp and did the rest with his guitar volume and hands he’s incredible if you get a chance to see him.

Everything at “6” is too much bass for me. Flubbery and fartiness is the bane of my existence. I use a ‘67 Bassman, and the bass stays off completely. The big closed back cab has so much low, bass is not needed, and the more you turn the amp up the more the frequencies are naturally turned up too. The only time I might turn the bass up to maybe 3 is if I had the volume on 3 or lower, which I never do. I understand tone is subjective and some people like that flubby sound when an amp is turned up. Not me.

I’ve owned most amps and brands out there. The best amp I have and have ever heard (outside of $$$$ boutiques) is a Fender Red Knob Super 60 modded by Cesar Diaz. It has been verified that it’s a Cesar amp and his signature has been verified. On the back of amp Cesar wrote “Johnny, thank you for everything!!! Cesar Diaz”
Who Johnny is, I don’t know. Why he chose a red knob to mod, I don’t know. I’ve tried to find the back story, but not a lot of luck so far.
And I’ve had (all original) ‘65 Deluxe Reverbs; ‘58 and ‘59 Bassmans; Marshall 1962 and 1974; etc.
A couple of sleepers (I know there are a lot) for old classics are some vintage Gibsons; also Supro, both vintage and new.
There are also some quirky amps that, if you get the right one, have amazing tones, ie vintage Alamo, Danelectro, Silvertone, Teisco, etc amps
