I am really old and old school, a tennis ball and different simole drills and exercises with it play an important role in my training :) bouncing it, too ;)

I read that Olympic boxers use it for reflex training. I wonder if people get results. I use it while doing boxing rounds just to mix it up. Speed bag, reflex ball, double end bag etc.

Old school is the best school

Very old school. Hang a dripping wet towel and practice striking until you do not throw water when striking.
Hang a piece of paper by a piece of thread, maybe single ply toilet paper, and strike it until you can hit it. No Shadow strikes.
Put some sand in the bottom of a pail and practice palm strikes, hit the surface and pull back quick. When the sand moves and you don't splash you know you started learning.
Those old school palm strikes shake up the interior of the body.
Practice punching, whipping, palm striking candles out. The further back you can do it from the more power you generate.
There is a site, Rum Soaked fist ( if they are still up ) with a vast amount of old style training tips.

i bought one of the headband type balls and I didnt like it because I found myself not moving my head or it messed things up. i switched to more of a classic double end bag set up where its attached to the ceiling and floor on some elastic that way I can slip it etc, and my downstairs neighbors dont complain

Yes called the speed ball. Bruce Lee used to mess with them. Tons of fun great for head movement , strike placement and timing.

Interesting! I'll find a tennis ball and try it.

Does holding pads have the same results?

yes, but you don't need a partner for this. Finding mitt holders is hard.
