      When you see guys like him telling a government censor to GTFO... It's things like that which let me know that China will be a pretty OK place in a while. Everyone lumps all of the Chinese people together with their government when in fact there are many there who are working to make China a true democracy. The kids are alright... :) Hopefully, it will be a perfect example of what a "bloodless revolution" looks like. Unlike many Middle-Eastern countries (or so it seems), there is a clear(er) path to success in that regard. And _that_ is a whole other discussion... :/

      Vice was my absolute favorite channel of all time across all media platforms. However, around the time that they sold out, the content quickly went downhill. I miss the old vice. tai chi in itself isn't something that is useless in combat. The issue is that in China, martial arts have non violent restrictions which turned ancient combat styled martial arts into simply exercise. Much of the traditional fighting aptitudes taught by the old form of Chinese martial arts has been lost in time.

      Erick The Red Actually I hate this guy more than the censorship. Xu’s master was originally one of the founders of modern Chinese combat “Sanshou” and of course a respectful Kung Fu master. And Xu was just trolling and playing like he knew nothing about Chinese traditional martial arts. It is a fact that most Chinese martial arts are used to improve people’s mind and health more than combat, but that does not mean they are liars. Like Aikido of Japan. Xu’s just advertising for its company and pretending to be a victim. Actually you can see it was him who was beating and humiliating people. When he used the word “exposing fake martial arts” then people just went crazily to support him. No one cared about his past and no one cared about his personalities. Chinese internet is far more free and horrible than you think.

I studied Filipino Pekiti Tirsia Kali (knife and full contact stickfighting, trained boxing at Joe Fraziers back in the 90s) I had a teacher who understood and could execute applications. Taichi teaches sensitivity which is key to higher level contact. Watch champion boxer Vasyl Lomachenko "stick" to opponents and swing them into hooks when they try to clinch. Very high level taichi type techniques executed in the ring. Ignorant people fail to see or recognize what he does and what he does has already made 4 opponents, including another 2 time Olympic gold medalist like himself, quit on the stool

    Just gonna settle it once and for all: Tai Chi isn't used as a combat martial arts today, but it was historically important as a viable combat style. It's just that many of us have never seen anyone who uses Tai Chi regularly in combat today. It's also very possible that what made Tai Chi effective for fighting is either not taught or is lost in history.

      Yang style isn't meant for fighting. The Wu style is. They have very intensive push hands. I've trained w/ guys that did Wing Chun and Wu style Tai Chi. And they did challenge matches as well against other Kung Fu schools. If the master he defeated was a Wu stylist, then my best guest is that he assumed the MMA guy was going to fight like a typical Kung Fu challenge fighter. But soon realized he was in a world of shit. I hope he's ok though. Head trauma at that age is no joke.

      "Chinese martial arts" covers a lot of ground, from village boxing styles (Wing Chun, Bak Mei), Boat Opera choreography (Hung Gar, Choy Lay Fut), wrestling (Shuai Cao, 18 Dragons Bagua), exercise (Tai Chi, 18 Lohan), dance (Wushu), competition (Sanda). Which particular category were you referring to? Also, I've found that what really makes the difference between an effective art and bullshit actually lies pretty much on the instructor's level of real experience, not necessarily the style.

      A big part of the problem I see with a lot of traditional martial arts style practitioners is they master move sets but not application. That means they often end up thinking about what to do & not having enough time to do something or getting stuck in trying to pull off some sort of combination of movements like they're a character on a fighting game that's stuck in a move sequence(Maxi from Soul Calibur is a great example)
      A big problem I see with many traditional styles is that they go too long without practicing application and end up getting too obsessed with style over substance when it comes to the move sets it focuses on training. The result is students mastering showy moves which makes them fall into extremely predictable patterns and being completely at a loss on what to do when the big fancy strike or combo they put everything they had into gets either avoided or neutralized. Before they can get over the shock that it didn't work & try something else, they get beat.
      Sadly, even if they got a chance to regain their composure, it would just happen again because they lack *real* experience in fighting. Otherwise, they'd use the more reliable techniques from their style and put up a decent fight from the beginning.

      What?! Because of Hollywood?! What are you drinking? - Because that is some powerful stuff....I want some!
      China doesn't need Hollywood to stifle their males/martial arts prowess - their corrupt government does a perfectly fine job doing that themselves. Have you ever asked yourself, how their males do so well in the Olympics, yet do so poorly in the *international martial arts competition?* It's simple:
      It's called *state sanctioned and state approved* activities and training regimens.
      Activities that boost fighting capacities and aggression levels in their male populace, are considered threats to the government - which also coincides with their anti-weapons/firearms ownership laws.
      This is why they don't mind world class athleticism and training in "harmless" activities, that poses no threat to the government and it's authorities in uniform/police.
      The Chinese government are run by a bunch of paranoid pussies, that don't want serious martial arts competition and especially the *mentality of meritocracy* to give ANY impetus of uprisings towards their power and control. Which is why they will sanction and promote THE most ineffective arts amongst their own populace and the rest of the world - through their state controlled media and entertainment companies.
      This is why the Chinese government ALWAYS downplays the teachings, training, and philosophies of Bruce Lee - and all the time tested MMA ideologies, techniques, and training regimens.
      If the Chinese government were TRULY proud of their martial heritage, they *wouldn't* allow frauds like that tai chi "master" to exist. If they were truly proud AND capable, the Chinese would have THE oldest, largest, most world renowned, and most lucrative fight venue way before Muay Thai tournaments, Vale Tudo, K-1, Pride FC, and the UFC.
      If you think government played no part in their indoctrination and promotion of garbage arts - just compare British controlled Hong Kong Shaolin movies (that was OLD SCHOOL unsanctioned knowledge) with Gordon Liu (The 36th Chamber), versus Jet Li's "Shaolin Temple" the *state sanctioned* wushu horseshit of the mainland. The physical displays are so stark in contrast, you'd think the HK films were made by Karate masters with their less flowery and showy movements.
      Prior to the Communists, the Chinese governments ALLOWED *public* challenges between masters to settle who was best and promote that particular art. Today, we see very little of that. Everything under the umbrella is just SO wonderful and nothing is a true standout.
      This public fight with Xu and the poser, is hopefully a sign of things to come - meritocracy reigns supreme while the posers are humiliated.

    • @TheScotchaholic
      @TheScotchaholic 7 років тому +10

      Alt Right Black Knight -
      Sanda was developed ONLY after their martial artists kept on getting their asses handed to them by Muay Thai fighters in Thailand sports competitions. Chinese wrestling was downplayed by the government - notice how many mainland films and TV are DEVOID of Chinese wrestling? Why? Because it works, and they don't want it popular amongst it's citizenry.
      The Chinese government are run by pathetic weaklings that want the same of their populace. That is how the early Chinese were conquered for 100 yrs by the smaller nomadic tribe called the Mongols - that HAD a clue to real fighting and mentality.
      A warrior leadership, DEMANDS their populace to be the same. A greedy and weak leadership, DEMANDS the same.
      Just look at the many Western leaderships, run by greedy, pathetic, and weak bureaucrats that allows Muslims to run rampant in their nations....See how leaders tell their people/men to be simps, metrosexuals, and cucks. Same shit different nation.

    most chinese martial artist teachers barely have any fight in their lives. They just learned from their master (usually parents) and fueled by fantasy martial art movies to think they are strong. By the end of the day, they are no different than dance teacher. While Kungfu is widely believed as father of all martial arts, it's traditional and their teachers always teach something very stupid in term of fight for survival, "be humble during the fight". Fun fact is that even Chinese army has not taught kungfu in their ranks for decades, but adopted western fighting style.

I mean the only left over ASIAN martial arts that was used in military application that works in real life that I know is Muay Thai. And maybe some fighting techniques with specific take downs/throws that functioned properly. I have heard that in the Vietnam War specific Vietnamese solders had some very deadly hand to hand combat that was better than the basic boxing and wrestling the USA had but logically I doubt that the Vietnamese government would ever reveal any of that.

    I can see why mma fighting would be better,most martial arts schools don't teach full combat ,they show you the moves and you do some sparring but you are mostly taught to pull your punches and not hurt anyone,most of it is the group facing the teacher in a line and copying him followed by team ups where you do the move but don't hit for real.
    Mma is taught more like boxing ,lots of heavybag work and full contact sparring with protective gear where you are learning how to fight for real not how to put on demos and this is probably why mma fighters win most of the time.

    • @smingjr
      @smingjr 7 років тому +4

      demonocus drumocus actually in my tae kwon do class we try to use bags. Contact sparring (if old enough). We also do real world examples along with traditional tae kwon do. The thing is most of our tae kwon do is original and works in real case scenarios. So for me. Martial arts wins. It teaches you respect and it teaches you how to fight (unless you don't try or your instructor is horrible)

    • @mchlclark
      @mchlclark 7 років тому +3

      That's it. If you don't actually put your lessons into practice, how do you know if it works for you, or works at all? Most "dojos" are bullshit. they will get you fit, and coordinated. But unless your allowed to actually fight, you will never know if your teacher is full of shit or not. The only reason any traditional martial artists ever win against an mma fighter, is because that traditionalist would have been actually fighting people. And the mma fighter is probably not that great. And the traditionalist will most likely fight like an mma fighter anyways. Using only techniques that will actually work, but returning to a traditional stance. So it looks like "Karate" maybe, but at it's core is really just common sense, practical techniques that work. My instructor always says to new students. "If I make you lay on the ground, and teach you the techniques for swimming over a few years, then drop you out in the middle of a lake. Do you think you will be able to swim to shore?" For any idiots reading, the answer is NO! You will drown. Pretty basic concept.

      Agreed. You get good at what you practice. If you spend your time doing tai chi form work you won't be good at fighting. If you spend 6 days a week training in the ring then you'd be good a t fighting. This is why MMA wins 9 times out of ten because they train for real fights.

    If the Tai Chi guy didn't want his ass kicked, he shouldn't have shown up.
    It would be like if I said that WWE style professional wrestling was a legitimate martial art, and then was astounded when an MMA guy kicked my ass.

    Damn he has charisma. I don't care what anyone says. GIve this guy a mic, interpretation and get out of his way. The old man challenged him so its his problem. If the Wushu association is so upset and the traditionalist why don't they send someone with balls to challenge him and defend tradition. They don't because they know its all bullshit, but thats how they make their money. If they fight this guy and lose, game over.

    First of all. Tai chi and almost all the current Chinese martial arts can only trace back to 1600s at most, and almost all of them came from non-military background. What I am trying to say is that almost all of the Chinese martial arts survived Qing dynasty are not Battlefield tested or remotely battle ready. China lost most of its warrior elites in the Opium Wars to western guns and cannons either through loss of lives or willful complete abandonment of the practice after the practitioners who tend to be military completely migrated to modern industrial ranged warfare like how Qing reformed its banner armies who used to be Medieval style equestrian force to Beiyang army use exclusively guns, cannons, and battleships. Unfortunately, unlike Japan, the practical military martial arts of old Han/Manchu/Mongol were completely lost during the transition just like all the combat ready martial arts of Medieval Europe. Do you really think the old martial arts of Han, Manchu and Mongols used would be this ineffective and emphasize so little on pole-arm and mounted combat? (hint: all of them favor nomadic equestrian style of mounted warfare).
    Indeed, a big chunk of the modern Kungfu originated from late Qing dynasty and are connected to the Boxer Rebellion. These martial arts were invented by peasants with little experience of fighting real soldiers and warriors in mortal combat scenarios and are primarily designed for self-defense against untrained fighters or for sport entertainment purposes like pro-wrestling. Again. Most of these Kungfu martial arts were never meant to be used in warfare or kill or be killed military situations. The ineffectiveness of the Boxer Rebellion also inadvertently proves the point. In fact, the stand out martial arts from Kungfu sphere tend to be of more ancient practices such as Shaolin fighting styles which does not connected to late Qing era, but even them were not meant to be used for battlefield situations but rather for defense against highway men and bandits. The lack of teaching on pole-arm fightings or mounted combat in these martial arts while China and the entire North Asia were dominated by cavalry and pole-arm centric warfare before modern times clearly revealed the true origin of these Kungfu martial arts--they are not meant for battlefield or kill or be killed situations or was designed by and for soldiers and warriors. Simply put, they were never meant to be lethal or combat ready, they are always geared towards sport entertainment (traveling circus performance) and self-defense against urban thugs and highway men; and as it's pedigree dictates, the Kungfu as we know today truly belongs in cinema and not in the world of full contact fighting sport.
    Incidentally, Muay Thai was designed for life and death situations and battlefield. Indeed, the style is designed as substitute fighting style when proper battlefield weapons and gears are unavailable for whatever reasons--Muay Thai aims to use human body and limbs to imitate the effectiveness and quality of shield, armor, sword, axe, and clubs in combat as much as possible, and you see the difference in its effectiveness when compared to other self-defense martial art styles.

      Ravenpy How does it feel to know you wrote this entire dissertation on here and only 4 people read it? I don't know if you're right or wrong cause I didn't read it cause it was way too long. The comment section is for just that, comments; not full dissertations. You could've gotten this same point across in a single paragraph at most.

      Very profound! I agree that a lot of practical martial arts were lost during modernization. And those Kung-fu originated mostly during late Qing period in southern China. Many practical forms such as blade/spear techniques were lost due to both dominance of firearms and Qing government’s restriction on traditional forms.
