The MMA Fighter On A Mission To Expose “Fake Martial Artists” in China (HBO)

  • The fight ended before it even began. Police in China swept in and detained controversial Chinese mixed martial arts fighter Xu Xiaodong minutes before his scheduled comeback fight against a Tai Chi master.
The planned fight came just weeks after video of Xu brutally flattening a Tai Chi master went viral - a fight that lasted just about 10 seconds, prompting massive backlash that forced Xu into hiding. Xu, an outspoken self-promoter, has claimed he is on a mission to expose fake masters of traditional martial arts.
VICE News met with Xu at his gym in Beijing earlier this month when he was still preparing for the scheduled battle that ended up not happening.

When you see guys like him telling a government censor to GTFO... It's things like that which let me know that China will be a pretty OK place in a while. Everyone lumps all of the Chinese people together with their government when in fact there are many there who are working to make China a true democracy. The kids are alright... :) Hopefully, it will be a perfect example of what a "bloodless revolution" looks like. Unlike many Middle-Eastern countries (or so it seems), there is a clear(er) path to success in that regard. And _that_ is a whole other discussion... :/

Vice was my absolute favorite channel of all time across all media platforms. However, around the time that they sold out, the content quickly went downhill. I miss the old vice. The de-valuing of artists is the norm form now on. While all our inspirational song writers are dying, they are being replaced with band-wagon clowns, without love or concern for human kind as a whole.

They ostracized Xu because he exposed fake martial arts, which is Tai Chi. tai chi makes up a good chunk of their gdp. Tourism in China is mostly for tai chi and they also make a lot of money from Chinese students themselves when they pay to learn this tai chi art form as a combative form.

tai chi in itself isn't something that is useless in combat. The issue is that in China, martial arts have non violent restrictions which turned ancient combat styled martial arts into simply exercise. Much of the traditional fighting aptitudes taught by the old form of Chinese martial arts has been lost in time.

Tai Chi _IS_ intended for combat. I practise Tai Chi and I've sparred with guys who've done Muay Thai, Karate, Juujutsu, Judo, Aikido, Wrestling, Wing Chun etc. -- Tai Chi works. :)
The problem is that a lot of Tai Chi schools don't _TEACH_ Tai Chi properly. Any martial art can be bad when not properly taught or learnt. I've seen really good Karate fighters and other Karate fighters who couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag. Same goes with Tai Chi and practically every other martial art.

Erick The Red Actually I hate this guy more than the censorship. Xu’s master was originally one of the founders of modern Chinese combat “Sanshou” and of course a respectful Kung Fu master. And Xu was just trolling and playing like he knew nothing about Chinese traditional martial arts. It is a fact that most Chinese martial arts are used to improve people’s mind and health more than combat, but that does not mean they are liars. Like Aikido of Japan. Xu’s just advertising for its company and pretending to be a victim. Actually you can see it was him who was beating and humiliating people. When he used the word “exposing fake martial arts” then people just went crazily to support him. No one cared about his past and no one cared about his personalities. Chinese internet is far more free and horrible than you think.

I studied Filipino Pekiti Tirsia Kali (knife and full contact stickfighting, trained boxing at Joe Fraziers back in the 90s) I had a teacher who understood and could execute applications. Taichi teaches sensitivity which is key to higher level contact. Watch champion boxer Vasyl Lomachenko "stick" to opponents and swing them into hooks when they try to clinch. Very high level taichi type techniques executed in the ring. Ignorant people fail to see or recognize what he does and what he does has already made 4 opponents, including another 2 time Olympic gold medalist like himself, quit on the stool

Just gonna settle it once and for all: Tai Chi isn't used as a combat martial arts today, but it was historically important as a viable combat style. It's just that many of us have never seen anyone who uses Tai Chi regularly in combat today. It's also very possible that what made Tai Chi effective for fighting is either not taught or is lost in history.

Yang style isn't meant for fighting. The Wu style is. They have very intensive push hands. I've trained w/ guys that did Wing Chun and Wu style Tai Chi. And they did challenge matches as well against other Kung Fu schools. If the master he defeated was a Wu stylist, then my best guest is that he assumed the MMA guy was going to fight like a typical Kung Fu challenge fighter. But soon realized he was in a world of shit. I hope he's ok though. Head trauma at that age is no joke.

It doesnt matter if hes a jerk or cares too much about banging or having expensive cars, his message remains the same. Non combat systems like Tai Chi should not claim to be a combat art, like a lot of douches do. Cuz when push comes to shove theyre gonna get stomped

    @pypy1986820 5 років тому +9

First of all. Tai chi and almost all the current Chinese martial arts can only trace back to 1600s at most, and almost all of them came from non-military background. What I am trying to say is that almost all of the Chinese martial arts survived Qing dynasty are not Battlefield tested or remotely battle ready. China lost most of its warrior elites in the Opium Wars to western guns and cannons either through loss of lives or willful complete abandonment of the practice after the practitioners who tend to be military completely migrated to modern industrial ranged warfare like how Qing reformed its banner armies who used to be Medieval style equestrian force to Beiyang army use exclusively guns, cannons, and battleships. Unfortunately, unlike Japan, the practical military martial arts of old Han/Manchu/Mongol were completely lost during the transition just like all the combat ready martial arts of Medieval Europe. Do you really think the old martial arts of Han, Manchu and Mongols used would be this ineffective and emphasize so little on pole-arm and mounted combat? (hint: all of them favor nomadic equestrian style of mounted warfare).
Indeed, a big chunk of the modern Kungfu originated from late Qing dynasty and are connected to the Boxer Rebellion. These martial arts were invented by peasants with little experience of fighting real soldiers and warriors in mortal combat scenarios and are primarily designed for self-defense against untrained fighters or for sport entertainment purposes like pro-wrestling. Again. Most of these Kungfu martial arts were never meant to be used in warfare or kill or be killed military situations. The ineffectiveness of the Boxer Rebellion also inadvertently proves the point. In fact, the stand out martial arts from Kungfu sphere tend to be of more ancient practices such as Shaolin fighting styles which does not connected to late Qing era, but even them were not meant to be used for battlefield situations but rather for defense against highway men and bandits. The lack of teaching on pole-arm fightings or mounted combat in these martial arts while China and the entire North Asia were dominated by cavalry and pole-arm centric warfare before modern times clearly revealed the true origin of these Kungfu martial arts--they are not meant for battlefield or kill or be killed situations or was designed by and for soldiers and warriors. Simply put, they were never meant to be lethal or combat ready, they are always geared towards sport entertainment (traveling circus performance) and self-defense against urban thugs and highway men; and as it's pedigree dictates, the Kungfu as we know today truly belongs in cinema and not in the world of full contact fighting sport.
Incidentally, Muay Thai was designed for life and death situations and battlefield. Indeed, the style is designed as substitute fighting style when proper battlefield weapons and gears are unavailable for whatever reasons--Muay Thai aims to use human body and limbs to imitate the effectiveness and quality of shield, armor, sword, axe, and clubs in combat as much as possible, and you see the difference in its effectiveness when compared to other self-defense martial art styles.

Very profound! I agree that a lot of practical martial arts were lost during modernization. And those Kung-fu originated mostly during late Qing period in southern China. Many practical forms such as blade/spear techniques were lost due to both dominance of firearms and Qing government’s restriction on traditional forms.

Which particular category were you referring to? Also, I've found that what really makes the difference between an effective art and bullshit actually lies pretty much on the instructor's level of real experience, not necessarily the style.

A big part of the problem I see with a lot of traditional martial arts style practitioners is they master move sets but not application. That means they often end up thinking about what to do & not having enough time to do something or getting stuck in trying to pull off some sort of combination of movements like they're a character on a fighting game that's stuck in a move sequence(Maxi from Soul Calibur is a great example)
A big problem I see with many traditional styles is that they go too long without practicing application and end up getting too obsessed with style over substance when it comes to the move sets it focuses on training. The result is students mastering showy moves which makes them fall into extremely predictable patterns and being completely at a loss on what to do when the big fancy strike or combo they put everything they had into gets either avoided or neutralized. Before they can get over the shock that it didn't work & try something else, they get beat.
Sadly, even if they got a chance to regain their composure, it would just happen again because they lack *real* experience in fighting. Otherwise, they'd use the more reliable techniques from their style and put up a decent fight from the beginning.
