Our assurance is Christ. Our guarantee is Christ. The promise is Christ. The faith in Whom is always set in the present perfect continuous indicative/tense: BELIEVE. Not once; but keep the faith. Let no man steal thy crown. The letters and epistles are bedecked with the constant use of might, may, IF etc be saved. It is a free gift that we must keep in order to inheret the promise. Unbelievers who were once believers and remain in continuous unrepentant unbelief will never inheret the promise.

@@drewhubbard9214 Greetings in Christ Jesus...You are mistaken. It's not a crown of rewards. “Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.” Christ is our reward . The context is singularly SINGULAR that speaks of our reward. Additionally, you shouldn't fail to quote the next verse: “Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God,..." You might want to think about what happens to him that doesn't overcome. And as you probably know from 1 John, it's our FAITH that overcomes. The scripture, from beginning to end warns us to stay in faith of HIM unto the end or we are LOST. No, it's not by our strength. Have a look at 1 Peter 1:3-5 KJV 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

@@GESvids In the lecture that Hodges gave titled Water producing water Hodges said that the source that produces everlasting life is the identity of Jesus when it is known. How does the identity of Jesus become known to a person? Hodges gave the example of the woman at the well that when she received the knowledge that Jesus is Christ then that source(the identity of Jesus) sprang into everlasting life( gave her everlasting life). How does the revelation that Jesus is the Christ as presented through the example of the woman at the well compare to john 11:25-27? Because knowing the verb form of having everlasting life from Jesus is not the same as the revelation of the identity of Jesus. In the sense that the woman at the well received eternal life when Jesus gave her the revelation of His identity which is not equal to believing that one has everlasting life from Jesus via the promise in chapter 11 verse 25-26(which says that whosever believes that Jesus has given them everlasting life will never die). Why do you question your salvation? Who are you trusting in to save you? You or Jesus? If you are putting any faith in yourself for whatever reason then that won't save you. However if you do the same thing I did, I think you will find rest. That is, give up. I'm too weak. Jesus HAS to do it for me. I'm not strong enough or good enough or faithful enough. But He is. And that's it. My life is His because I'm utterly helpless. There's tremendous peace in that. He did it all. IT. IS. FINISHED.

OK listen not everything in your head is reliable with OCD. What you can do is trust Christ now, ask for God’s guidance now, trust God with your anxiety and OCD now. Nobody can tell you if you’re saved or not because only God can see your heart, so you need to trust God with it. In a sense the virtue of faith, as I understand it, not just saving faith, is trust in action. God says it so act on it, Proverbs 3 iirc. It’s possible that your “doubt” is basically a brain malfunction that you have to ignore and trust in God to guide you. That being said believe in Christ now not just to save you but also to guide you. There’s also a Gavin Ortlund talk about assurance that also mentions a Bible verse about doubters in the church, I just can’t recall the verse. A lot of people don’t know how to deal with scrupulosity/OCD so they’re going to give you well intentioned advice that may or may not help, because they don’t understand. Your doubt may be real or it may just be like I said, an unfortunate misfire in your head. Faith not just for salvation, but faith for guidance, with the understanding God may allow you to get some things wrong. Whatever you do though, do not deliberately choose despair. Again deliberately, you may not have complete control over your mind but you can lead every thought captive as best you can if you are in Christ. And I’m not saying you’re not! But faith is something you can do right now. Trust God with everything, your salvation, your fear, your confusion.

Saving faith doesn't come "with the kitchen sink" , front loaded with all manner of good works till death .
Rather , it's only as valid as the Object in which it's placed : His Person & Promise .
The book of John remains the ultimate clarifier of this Person/Promise as the Giver of the Gift :
"Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”
Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life" (John 4:10-14) .
Not to be persuaded of this passage is tantamount to unbelief in Him .
There's not a non quantifiable level of emotion , or act of the will , or a requisite ginning up of some sort of "trust or reliance" mentioned as a co condition . Nor anything we do to "seal the deal".
It's not a performance contract that only pays when we hit the finish line . Rather , by childlike faith (intellectual assent) - devoid of unknowable co-conditions - we enter the endless Kingdom in the freest of all avenues :
"... therefore it is by faith that it might be according to grace that the Promise would be certain" (Romans 4:16) .

      Some mistakingly believe
John's gospel was written for evangelism because it says in John 20:31
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
The misunderstanding is because in John's gospel the word believe is always in the present continuous tense, which doesn't mean just believe once, it means go on believing.
Everywhere in John's gospel the emphasis is going on believing.
For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son that whosoever goes on believing- present continuous tense-
Whoever is believing. It means to go on doing something, all the way through John's gospel it means go on believing that Jesus is the son of God, going on believing, you may go on having life.
That whosoever goes on believing will never perish but go in having eternal life. Ask any expert in Greek and they will say that's what the original text says.
In other words John's gospel was not written to convert people but to encourage believers to continue believing. That's why John doesn't deal with repentance or water baptism because he assumes the readers are already repented and been baptized. The fact that John doesn't mention repentance doesn't mean its not necessary.
👉He's saying go on believing because in Ephesus, where John lived when he wrote it there was a heretic called Cerinthus that was teaching bad things about Jesus and that bad teaching was getting into the church. 👈
👉So John wrote his gospel for believers to make them go on believing in
      Jesus as son of God.
Believing that Jesus is the son of God, going on believing that you may go on having life.👈
How could an unbeliever understand these verses?
      John 14:5-6
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 6If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
      John 14:12,16,17
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father 16And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever17Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Therefore any verse that in John that talks about believing John is speaking to already repented believers, to think otherwise would be that John taught differently than Jesus Peter and Paul.
In 1 John and later at the end of John's life he wrote Revelation which has plenty about repenting of sin in chapter 2&3.

2 Chronicles 7:14 was written to the nation of Israel. Not the church. Turning from sin is good but does not save anyone. That makes the cross of no effect and makes us the savior. John 20:31 agrees with First John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that BELIEVE on the name of the Son of God, that ye may KNOW YE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.
For the GIFTS, (eternal life) and the calling of God are without repentance. Irrevocable, cannot be changed back.
Romans 6:23 For the penalty for sin is death, and we all sin, (First John 1:8), and we all die, but the GIFT of God is ETERNAL LIFE, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
We can only receive the free gift of eternal life that Jesus paid for with His one blood sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. First John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world. John 3:18 Believers are no longer condemned, but unbelievers are condemned already, because they have not believed on the name of the Son of God.

Not turning from sin will condemn.
It makes Jesus's death on the cross meaningless.
When Jesus's first command when He started His earthly ministry was to Repent.
      Later Acts 17:30
In the past God overlooked such ignorance but now commandeth all men every where to repent.
Grace which is unmeritted favor is offered to any who repent of sin and believe that Jesus died on the cross was buried and rose again.
Those who say believe only but reject repenting of sin are not
      true believers in God's eyes.
Anyone can claim to believe as 70% of Americans say they do, but if they aren't repented with a changed life serving Jesus they will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Without repenting of sin that person is saying I have no sin that I need to stop doing.
We must confess our sins. (1 John 1:9) Not only must we confess but we must forsake
them. Run away from them. One old definition of repentance is to leave the sins I've done before and show I've earnestly grieved by doing them no more.
If a man is genuinely born again, all old things are passed away all things have become new.( 2 Corinthians 5:17)
Too many today are preaching a perverted gospel to make it as palatable as possible. They give them a shot of love, and grace without any warning of a looming judgment of hell for any who think because of grace they can continue living no different than before.
Those that believe that a change of conduct [Repenting of sin] is works are making our Lord's death on the cross meaningless
He didn't die for our sins to give a green light to live like a demom
A rebirth in Jesus means a new heart, a new mind, a new spirit, a new person

First John 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we are deceived and the TRUTH is not in us. We are saved by what Jesus did for us. No one ever stops sinning in this life. For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. ALL, not some, but ALL. Romans 3:23.
Romans 6:23 for the penalty for sin is death but the GIFT OF GOD IS ETERNAL LIFE.
Acts 16:31 Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. John 6:47. Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me HATH EVERLASTING LIFE.
Jesus came for the Jews. They would not accept Him as their Messiah. They needed to repent, change their mind and believe he was their savior. But they would not.
No where does the bible say to repent of sin to be saved. That would make us the savior and the cross of no effect. Repent, go from unbelief to belief. That is repentance for salvation. John 3:18. First Corinthians 15:1-4.
We can only receive the free gift of eternal life. We can do nothing to save us.
Ephesians 1:13-14 Ephesians 4:30. John 3:16-18. First John 5:13. What makes Jesus death on the cross meaningless is to say we do not need a savior, we can save ourselves by turning from sin. We have to be born again. Ephesians 1:13-14.
If turning from sin would save us, then Jesus died in vain.

I'm not understanding one thing, he said not to make a decision to believe, but rather ensure you are persuaded to believe. Yet, no where in Scripture does it say this? Acts 16:30-31 "30 and having brought them forth, said, “Lords, what must I do that I may be saved?” 31 And they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved-you and your household.”
Even Jesus Himself kept saying "believe in Me" - If it's that vital to be persuaded vs making a decision then surely this would've been made clear as God doesn't wish any to perish, but all to come to a saving knowledge of the truth, Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.

That happened to me also. I believed in Jesus for eternal life but later got confused byCalvinism and was unsure of whether I would go to heaven or not. Thankfully, I now have clarity and my assurance is back.
The moment someone believes in Jesus for eternal life, he/she has assurance of salvation. If he/she loses that assurance via wrong teaching etc his/her eternal destiny isn’t affected. That person once’s saved it always saved.

I looked into his deathbed situation and it seems he was very afraid because he didn’t know. This seems to be far from the occasional doubt we can all experience at times because of our behaviors, circumstances or feelings.
Imo , based on Calvinism and the Lordship salvation/ persevering doctrines and their correlation to works , I hope he was truly saved.

Even if you’re living right, you may have false faith and be a false brethren in the end. I think he was saved, he understood who Jesus was and had trusted him for eternal life. He didn’t believe you could lose salvation and knew it was by grace through faith alone so sounds saved to me

@@letstalktech96 it makes one wonder that if a Calvinist is truly saved ( did trust Christ) but then worried their whole life if they were actually saved. I’m sure some are but I wouldn’t want to live with that in the back of my mind. It’s kind of sad because Jesus didn’t die to create a life of worry but of peace in him and his promises.
Honestly, I doubt sometimes but it’s doubt at myself and never at Christ.
When that happens, I have to remind myself that he did the work and I just accept it, not able to add to it at all.

There is no such thing as "saving faith", it is saving grace thru faith. Get back to the basics. It is who the object (Jesus) of faith is in that saves a person. Jesus is the Savior, He does the saving. Once a person believes/trusts/have faith in Jesus as God and Savior, trusting what He said, in His Word, a person receives Christ's righteousness and is saved instantly forever.

@Alvin Fen You stated, #1 "They didn’t understand that He was God", and #2 "they didn’t believe that He would have to die on the cross." I could bring up more from what you wrote but I do not have the time to teach you the Word. Matthew 22:29 says, "... Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures ... ." (Especially the old testament) You need to dig deeper into the Word of God.
Starting with #2, there was a reason for this. Luke 9:45 states "... it was hid from them, that they perceived it not ... ." God hid this from the disciples because the purpose of Jesus' first coming was the cross.
Concerning #1, please start listening to Anthony Rogers, he debates with Jews, Muslims, Oneness, Unitarians, Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses, Modalists, etc. He is very articulate, digs into the Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, old Jewish ancient literature like the Talmud and Targums. Anthony has many videos and is worth watching. Begin with the video:

You must not have read my first response to what you wrote to me or you would not have written back the second time as you did. #1 You said, "They didn’t understand that He (Jesus) was God". In John 1:1 "... the Word (Jesus) was God." and John 1:14 "And the Word (God Jesus) was made flesh ... ." So yes you have to believe that Jesus is God. This is not a "secret list that we must believe" as you said in your second response to me. Old and new testaments believers must believe that Jesus is God. This is why I asked to you to listen to Anthony Rogers to better understand this but apparently you choose not to learn.
No, I did not miss John's point. I understand quite well what he and Paul wrote. At the instant of belief a person is saved forever. Believers are imputed Jesus' righteousness.

What did Jesus come to earth in the form of man for. To forgive our sins. Matthew 1:21.
How did Jesus say over and over how our sins would be forgiven?
He said to repent of sin.
Jesus first command when He started His earthly ministry was Repent
      Mark 1:15
The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
      Matthew 4:17
Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.
      Matthew 9:13
But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to REPENTANCE.
      Mark 6:12
They went out and preached that people should REPENT.
      WARNING!
      Luke 13:3
I tell you, no! But UNLESS YOU REPENT, YOU TOO WILL ALL PERISH.
      Luke 15:7
I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one SINNER WHO REPENTS than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to REPENT.
      Luke5:32
I came not to call the righteous, but SINNERS TO REPENTANCE.”
      Luke24:47
And REPENTANCE FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
      Matthew 11:20
Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because THEY DID NOT REPENT.
      Matthew 9:13
But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous but SINNERS TO REPENTANCE.
      Mark 2:17
On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the RIGHTEOUS but SINNERS to REPENTANCE.
You cannot truly believe without repentance. [Which is why He didn't just say believe for the forgiveness of sins] and you won't repent unless you truly believe.
To believe is faith produced by repentance.

Hodges claim that you can be an unbelieving believer is probably where so many think you can be faithless even to the point of walking away and Jesus will still be faithful to you.
Makes as much sense as saying you can still be saved while at the same time you have surrendered to satans lordship..
    2 Timothy 2:12
    If we endure,
we will also reign with him.
    👉If we disown him,
    he will also disown us;
If we deny Him he will deny us.👈
👉 If you walk away from the Savior rejecting Him you are damned. He will renounce you. 👈 Matthew 10:33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.
    2 Timothy 2:13
    If we are faithless,
    he remains faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.👉 It does not mean He will remain faithful to you otherwise deny in v-12 would mean nothing.
👉 If you are faithless and throw it away, you're not a believer.👈 He is faithful to Himself. The way he vindicated Himself is by throwing you out. God values His trustworthiness and if you decide I'm going to go my own way to a life of sin you no longer trust in Him. He's faithful to the worth of His name.
👉The way God vindicates His trustworthiness to those who reject it, its called
    hell.👈
Don't fool yourself with your unbelief by thinking God's still faithful to me. He is faithful He cannot deny Himself, that's who He is faithful to.
[You cannot be an unbelieving believer]
If you hold to Jesus saying you are trustworthy you are everything to me, acknowledge you're just a hopeless sinner He cannot deny you. Your security is as firm as His allegiance is to His name.
    1 Corinthians 10:21
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.

Where does it say repentance has anything to with harmony?
In 1 John and later at the end of John's life he wrote Revelation which has plenty about repenting of sin in chapter 2&3

Do you know what a promise is?
Jesus’s promise is “he that believes is no longer condemned..”
And He clarifies this promise by this statement..”but he that does not believe still stands condemned..”
And He further clarifies that by stating this.. “because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten son of God.
You must also understand what it means to believe.. To be fully persuaded that something is true.
So when Jesus states.. “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
So are you fully persuaded that what Jesus promises.. that if you believe in Him for “resurrection and life”…which is eternal life..then you have it!
Because it’s His promise to you..Forever.

Believing that Jesus is the son of God, going on believing that you may go on having life.
John doesn't teach a different gospel thanJesus who called for repentance.
John also doesn't say anything about Jesus's birth or his water baptism,His temptation and other things are left out as well.
John says the word believe over 90 times to
      encourage us to keep believing.
What If scripture said Repent of sin, and you don't have to believe?
Everyone would agree that makes absolutely no sense. Why would anyone Repent if they didn't believe.
What Jesus John the Baptist Peter and Paul said makes perfect sense. Repent of sins shows that you do believe.
      Peter :
      Acts 2:38
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
      Acts 20:21
I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they MUST TURN TO GOD IN REPENTANCE and HAVE FAITH (believe) in our Lord Jesus.
I would encourage you to read John's 3 letters where he talks about confessing sin and asking Jesus for forgiveness and how true believers must live to see the Kingdom of God.
Also John wrote Revelation that quotes Jesus commanding repentance of sin especially in chapter 2&3.
