- A very interesting clip that dates to November 12, 1963. On this day the Beatles were scheduled to perform at the Guildhall, Portsmouth, England. However, Paul was suffering from stomach flu and the concert had to be cancelled.
As you can see in this clip (filmed backstage at the Guildhall for the Southern Television show "Day By Day"), Paul gets more and more uneasy as the interview goes on. Towards the end of the interview John notices that there is somethng wrong with Paul and tries to make some kind of contact with him.
If people ever doubt the closeness of John and Paul, show them this video. At 2:14 John peers at Paul. He knows he isn't well, yet Paul makes a little face to let John know he will keep up. Such a sweet moment. This is one of the few times we see the soft, kind John, because sometimes he hid that side of him... They were so close.

Seeing Paul not being bubbly and happy makes me drain inside. He’s like leaning against Ringo a bit which makes me *so* concerned. And seeing John asking if he’s alright is absolute TRUE friendship.
This is lovely. I love the way John seems so concerned about Paul. And my God, even though he was ill, Paul looks more beautiful than ever here.

Yes I noticed that too, when Paul seems to be fading John is clearly looking after him. And I agree -- Paul was "peaking" at this point - 21 years old.

Paul was put off, by the question AND the answer about writing songs...... I.E. " What about me ? Did ya forget about me ? " Touchy stuff, that.... Shouldn't leave your songwriting partner out of an answer....

Poor Paul! He obviously wasn't feeling well with the flu he had. I think it's so sweet how John is concerned about him. Paul just looks so miserable...poor guy.
A bad stomach virus
He liked to act tough and as if he didn't need anyone but this interview shows how much john cared for Paul. Paul was very ill here and john wouldn't stop staring at him hoping to make Paul feel even the slightest bit better. Every time john made a joke he kept peering over hoping Paul would crack a smile. He hated to see Paul so miserable I think it shook him to his core.
Paul did a good job standing through the interview. There's almost nothing worse than gastric flu pains. :(

You know, I watched this about HUNDREDS of times and I find it very odd that John just randomly comments Ringo on his scarf. I wonder if its just an excuse to look at Paul some more. :( I think Paul knows that John is worried because he just keeps looking away and doesn't want to keep worrying him John noticed, so he looks around, and sees Ringo's scarf so he just keeps secretly looking at Paul so he doesn't make him uncomfortable worrying about him. The poor gorgeous baby. :( John was such a sweetheart despite being known as the "bold" Beatle he is such a wonderful friend :3
rebecca st. martin actually when they get the chance to in interviews they'll talk about what they've been doing a bit and then talk about something random to have a bit of banter. It's a bit more obvious, the switch, in this interview, probably because the band didn't want to appear 'off'. At this point they were still unsure of whether Paul was well enough to perform or not so they had to appear normal so that if the concert went ahead, people wouldn't suspect anything. It just so happened that the concert was cancelled because presumably a doctor or medical professional had not cleared Paul to go on stage. That's why John comments on the scarf. He would have picked the scarf because he'd already been focusing on Ringo, leaving it to appear as normal banter.
John had another side to him and he could be a real jerk, but I think deep down inside he was a sweet heart. He was brash in order to hide his pain going back to his childhood.
Close friends can communicate loads of information with just their eyes and eyebrows, evident from this clip. Two of the best singers and songwriters past, present and future.

The tender concern John shows Paul here is the sweetest thing ever. Paul has said somewhere that in private John was actually the "softest, sweetest guy". But in public his image was the tough one. Shows how in tune John was with Paul, George and Ringo barely notice somethings wrong with Paul, tho Ringo does look at him a couple of times. Even the interviewer doesnt notice. But how cute is "sick Paul" tho?
At 2:07, Paul turns away and says "Ooh" really quietly, but I think he had to choke back from becoming sick right then. When John whispers at 2:11 "You Alright?" Paul kind of pretends it's not a big deal but almost mouths "No" to John. They had to cancel a concert because Paul collapsed from sickness soon after this interview.

No no no! Paul didn't collapse. I mean, he was sick, but that's all it was. The collapse part was just an over-exaggerating newspaper headline. But the part about being sick and the band cancelling the concert was right.

It is Ringo that says "Paul" and it almost looks like Paul whispered something to Ringo and then gave John a funny look. I almost picture him whispering, "I think I'm going to hurl!" to Ringo. Poor thing! You actually hear him moan and have a sick look right when Ringo is joking about his scarf.
He most definitely would *not* have said he was going to 'hurl'. Spew, maybe. Chunder, quite possibly. But hurl? Not a chance. What do you think they are, American? :-P

Aaaaawh, I just wanted to give Paul a big, hug. Bless him, and John is such a sweetheart asking and making sure he's okay. And people say they hated eachother? Bullshit, they were like brothers and they'll always will be, it's a shame John has gone, I miss his music, his passion for music and peace, and his sense of humour, and of course George, the quiet Beatle, but the gentle and generous one, rest in peace, hopefully we can meet you someday.

Celebrities are spicy. you have to take an interview even if you feel sick. In this clip, John was so kind and gentle. They are a family and they are Fab Four as I thought.

@@concorde2569 Actually Paul was sick, he had stomach flu. There were reports in the press that he passed out backstage which the the bands pr machine denied, but he was ill enough that the show that night was called off. Something The Beatles almost never did.

Also, this interview is from 1963, so the "Real Paul" was still alive. Looks like you can't even keep up with the conspiracy 😂 Unlike you, I looked at both sides of the story and the conclusion I came down to is that Paul is alive. The "facts" to prove he was dead were either coincidences or waaay too far of a reach to be legitimate. So if you wanna continue to live in your world of "I'm so smart because I know Paul is dead and no one else knows it" I'm not gonna stop ya 🤷🏽♀️
