      Believe it or not hurricanes are safer to drive through than tornadoes whith a little bit of knowledge. You keep the vehicle facing into the wind in open areas.

So long as he doesn't drive into a house and kill someone else... why should I tell him how to live/die? When driving in conditions like this, I wonder whether it is better to drive an SUV or a low-profile car like a Camaro (or other NASCAR-type car). The SUV is heavier and has more ground clearance to go through water and over debris, but it is less streamlined. On the other hand, the Camaro is more streamlined, but it is lighter and has less ground clearance. Note that NASCAR cars go through 200 mph winds on a track (at least the lead car does).

    • @gregorypdearth
      @gregorypdearth 5 років тому +1

      That is an interesting question. Keep in mind that cars are only aerodynamically stable in one axis. That is why in a NASCAR accident, the cars don't just scoot sideways like hockey pucks but actually go airborne and flip many many times. Once the airflow is no longer moving uniformly over that one axis (front to back), turbulence and pressure differentials add up rather quickly creating chaotic movement.
      From the side, even a shorter vehicle like a Camaro has a lot of vertical resistance to wind. And if the air is coming at you from behind, the same aerodynamic features that make the car stable going forward work against you, making the tail (which lacks much weight) easy to lift. A spoiler, for example, only works in one direction... in the opposite direction, a feature that causes drag can cause LIFT. LOL
      Now, compared to a heavier vehicle that is like a brick from any angle, that is an interesting question. More force is being applied to more square inches and the force increases exponentially (a 90 mph wind isn't 3 times stronger than a 30 mph wind... it is 27 times stronger). Is the added weight enough to offer more stability given the increase in pressure? Or is the decreased pressure on the outside of a streamlined car better even if the car is lighter?
      Well, history has shown us the answer pretty clearly. Look at storm chasers and who survives and who doesn't. A Chevy Cobalt is pretty streamlined and actually lacks spoilers or other unidirectional drag implements. But they can get flipped into a field pretty easily, even when manned by veteran storm chasing legends that are extremely safety minded and intelligent.
      The best storm chasing vehicles are the tanks made for the job, which aren't so much streamlined as they are very heavy and armored. They have massive engines and truck chassis, so they tend to be much harder to move.
      Even a non-armored truck that isn't on a raised suspension and has a lot of steel giving it added weight would probably outweigh any streamlined lighter vehicle from a safety standpoint mainly because air can get under _either_ vehicle, where the surface is nearly flat, and in the end, less weight is easier to fling farther once that happens. I would rather storm chase in a F-350 converted into a low-rider myself, with a hard-shell bolted-in bed cover and a dozen bags of gravel in the back. Seems to me that would be the optimum combination of weight, power, and aerodynamic resistance to flippage. LOL.

    Fantastic video. Hope you win some kind of award for that. Just glad it won't be a Darwin Award.

    Two pieces of what appeared to be corrugated roofing and two other unidentifiable blown items, could have been the last things that You captured on your camera.
    Its that bravery, the tenacious mindset fm you that promotes hefty paychecks. Not to leave out the respect and admiration.
    Thanks for keeping us on the edge of our seats!

    absolutely AMAZING footage. I would have LOVED to be there for that landfall. I live in Clearwater and chased Florence to NC Wilmington. But this is insane and you were as cool as i would have been. lmao

    Rather amazed the car stayed on the road! That was 150-160mph sustained winds inside that, with even higher gusts.

    Insane yet so brave! I remember this day well. I was at work down In the Tampa area in Bradenton and my co workers and I were watching the landfall on a Facebook live. And then when had a couple of tornado warnings down there around us around this time. Crazy crazy!
