You can actually pretty accurately estimate the total energy expended by a hurricane based on the amount of water vapor that is rising off the ocean to condense into clouds. The change of state of water from a gas to a liquid releases a considerate amount of latent heat energy, even in small quantities. But when considering the total amount of water condensing in a hurricane, the average energy release is accepted at between 5.0x10^14 joules/sec and 6.0x10^14 joules/sec. At that rate, a hurricane will release more energy than is contained in our entire nuclear arsenal in a single day. As incredible as the wind energy of a hurricane is, it makes up less than 1% of the total energy released by a hurricane. The vast majority is actually heat.

Whatever he was driving, I promise you he can turn the traction control off!! Check out his El Reno video - the traction control in his car almost cost him his life.
Having lived in parts of the country that have hurricanes and tornadoes, I got to see both up close and personal. The differences between a tornado and a hurricane are... With a hurricane, you have days of advance warning and they can track it for hours before it hits. With tornadoes, you're lucky if you have 2 hours notice. Tornadoes will slam you down harder than a hurricane and then be on their way. Hurricanes will keep knocking you down every time you get up for hours. Rain often precedes a tornado but typically ebbs about the time the funnel is in your close vicinity. Hurricanes bring the water non-stop and from all directions. Tornadoes don't always collapse buildings from a distance away. Hurricanes will keep hammering until they topple the building. Bottom line, both bring their own destructive dynamic and should never be underestimated for their potential to ruin the lives of people and destruction of property.
I live in a city where we don't usually get hurricanes, but since 2015 we almost got hit by 4, the first one died 200 miles in the ocean, one of them caused 3-4 days of moderate rain, they all was cat4, during all of this, I stayed home which is half a mile from the beach and almost nobody got out of the city and some people were waiting for it to come on the beach
Definitely one of the better hurricane videos I've seen. Really gives you sense of raw power that mother nature is so casually capable of delivering. Good job. Stay safe.
NO camera or microphone can possibly reproduce the raw power of winds like this. I experienced winds like for 4 (four) days on ocean station Charlie in Dec 1973. I was on CGC Morganthau which was a 378 foot ship. The winds were straight line for the entire time and to say the seas were mountainous is an understatement. Once in a while I'd go to the engine room down low to reduce the amount of being tossed around. We were running our 2- 3500HP diesels at 2/3 ahead to give us steerage just to keep pointed into the wind and the wind noise outside drowned out the diesels!
Called the "Forgotten" storm because so many have never realized nor acknowledged just how horrible Michael was / is. It will never be the same. My heart still breaks for those who were there and who lost so much my friends included.
It was a cool storm. Wish I would have been there. I would have just ridden it out in the car outside and not have gone in the garage. Tyndall AFB and Mexico Beach got the brunt of it.
This was one of the worst storms I've been through and NEVER want to face again. So many people has lost and had to start over from "Hurricane Michael". We're all still rebuilding and regaining something of a normal life. However, I have found out that hardly anyone outside of this storm knew absolutely nothing about this devastation we faced here. Thank you for sharing this real life video for all to see and hear. And to all our service men and women, maintenance workers, emergency, volunteer workers that came from all over thank you very much for your sacrifices! And big thanks to God for our lives being saved!
I'm one of those people who would perish happily in one of those storms, while doing something really dumb. This was very well filmed and the sound alone gives goosebumps. Thanks for sharing!
This brought back all the flashbacks from this. Watching our roof fly off. Watching a tree fly above me and my dads head when we went to go tie something down even though it didn’t last. It was crazy. I was in ga when this hit not as bad there as it was in Florida but I’m glad that most got out physically okay. Emotionally I know none of us were. I’ve been in many hurricanes but this one hits differently for me.
Wow this is amazing. The power this hurricane had. I'm amazed of how well this was captured. This video should be at the top of the watch list. I hope News channels picked out this video to show.
They should show this on tv right before major hurricanes are supposed to hit. I've always thought it would be cool to ride out a big hurricane, but would definitely have second thoughts after seeing this. Scary stuff!
I was on the second story in an apartment when it hit, in Panama City. It persisted for 4 hours, and tore the roof off another apartment building. Iirc, a lady's house had thia massive tree fall on it. The flea market right down the road reduced to rubble like buildings near Mexico Beach. Floodwater rose up like 3 feet. It was catastrophic. I commend you for being out there in the eyewall recording this, stay safe man.
Great video. I'm one of the survivors of it and I've never experienced anything like this before. What the national news doesn't show is what it's like now, weeks afterward. Our town is destroyed. Every block for miles and miles has homes and businesses devastated. People are without their homes and their places of employment. Heartbreaking really.
Having watched several of the videos documenting the force of this hurricane, it amazes me that there is anything left standing. Anyone building in hurricane prone or tornado prone areas should be required to watch the footage of what 100 plus mph winds look like, so they don't complain about building codes, and also go and extra step in adding additional structural supports where possible. The power is absolutely incredible. I am not far east of there, only 5 miles inland, and did not evacuate, but thanks to these videos shared I certainly will in the future.
I am a survivor of Hurricane Michael in Panama City. I rode through the eye along with 12 other people in a church that was nearly destroyed. It was a terrifying and unforgettable experience. It was like being caught in a giant tornado for 3 hours, I thought it was going to be my end. The aftermath felt like the apocalypse, power lines and trees covered the roads and highways. We didn't have water or power for over a month. The entire community mourned, but everyone came together and I was amazed of all the outside help we got. Tears still fill my eyes when I think about this. I pray for the Bahama survivors of Hurricane Dorian, their situation is much worse.
As I sit here and watch this I can appreciate the risk you took to get this footage ! I pray for those families who have suffered the Warith of Michael!
Nathan Rohrbough Please upload!!! Would love to see your footage. Glad you are safe, by the time it was up here in NC, winds were only 50-60. I can’t imagine what you went through but these documented videos help paint the picture for sure!
I don't know what will happen with this video, but I purposefully left out all of the worst damage and aftermath shots for this reason. The damage dashcam video I posted before this one I did not attempt to monetize. Some of my tornado videos were demonetized, but were re-instated after I appealed. I think videos focusing on the actual storm phenomenon itself might be OK - showing or focusing on damage (especially to homes) after the fact probably isn't.
Ive lived in california my whole life and I didnt realise these storms were like this, we've NEVER had ANYTHING like this not even close. Im a good example of a person who didnt really know how fierce these storms can get, why are we still building wooden houses where these storms happen. People out here are so content with sitting indoors until there hips give out they physically couldnt get away from the storms and would die because of how weak some of these building out here are. When that Monster El Nino the walls inside the building were bleeding water now I suspect mold all throughout this building.
@MasterSequence if you show aftermath isnt that making money on other peoples devastation? They lose everything and you make money on them? Taking advantage of them.
This was the most terrifying thing to live through. Going outside in the calm of the eye and seeing the churning wall of clouds all around us is something I’ll never forget.
This is what those of us that "rode it out" for various reasons sat through while Michael ripped our world apart. What this video can't show is the moment the eye comes across and everything gets deathly quiet. Then, just moments later, it all starts up again but from the opposite direction. Watching huge century oaks ripped out of the ground like twigs was really scary! And that sound!
In panama they got recording that the sustained winds were 177 an with gust 204 i was scared i was gonna die in my home a tree fell on the house it was scary when half our roof was gone an we can hear everything but too scared to turn the corner too look

I was in hurricane Michael one hour north of where this was filmed. It’s amazing how that sound still gives me the chills. Sounds like an f-15 being revved up over and over.
I’ve never seen a strong hurricane like this, but when Sandy hit, even at that low category/power, I distinctly remember the howl that it brought with it and it was like nothing I’ve heard before. It was like the entire sky was making the noise, as opposed to just hearing wind.
Wow. It wouldn't even seem right to call this "rain." It's just a blast cannon of mist. Very good production. This is professional quality documentation.
First thing. You have incredible bravery to record inside such a powerful storm. Second the power mother nature posses is awing, this hurricane is such a powerful thing and sustained for such a long time. Its like being inside a f3 tornado for hours. Wow
The thing is, is that we don't actually know the difference between 200mph winds in a tornado and 200MPH winds in a hurricane. In a tornado it's much more complex, moving directions, incredible updraft lower pressure etc. So comparing them is really comparing apples to oranges. We don't know if the windspeed estimates on the EF scale are accurate either. It's just an estimation.
That was great video. I lived threw many storms living in Central Fla. but none of them were stronger than a Cat 2. I could not appreciate what a Cat 5 was until I watched your video. Great job. I Pray that everyone made it out of there safely.
From being in one of these storms , I can say that the thing you can’t fully get from a video is the sound the wind makes . The sound of it going into all the cracks and holes and pushing on everything. Especially if you’re in a hotel you can hear it down and through the hallways .
After surviving the April 27th, 2011 F4 Tornado in Pleasant Grove, Alabama I can tell you that the sound is similar but does not sound as violent. An F4 has wind speeds from 207 mph to 260 mph but aren't sustained as long as a hurricane. Thanks for providing the video. Maybe some people will heed the warnings next time.
I came here from your website. I've read a lot about lightning, as it purely fascinates me! Then I've come across your article about hurricane Michael and I've went straight to youtube to see the footage live. Man, what a sight! You've surely felt a lot of adrenaline and intensity while standing out there. Glad you were safe, and the damage to your car wasn't that significant. Take care man and good footage as always. Looking forward to you!
I drove down I-10, a couple months ago, on my way to Tampa, from Mobile. I went thru Ivan and Katrina. The coastal damage was incredible! But when I went thru that area, 30 or 40 miles off the coast, and saw the damage, I was shocked! It makes me wonder what I didn't see, because I am sure the cleanup of destroyed homes had already taken place.
Im very sure that the post-analysis of this storm will upgrade it to a 5. the 155mph reading was 2 hours before landfall, and it was explosively intensifying in the time between the reading and landfall. the damage and video also support that in my eyes. What a monster storm. Great video though, well done!
@@hemantbeniwal8033 In Panama City, yes. The RFQ(where the strongest winds are) came ashore between Tyndall and Mexico beach, where some *very* impressive tree damage is located. I think they upgrade to 140kt/160mph in post.
I personally do not believe that it will be upgraded to category 5 because the most severe damage at Mexico Beach was a result of both storm surge and devastating winds. The advisory update they issued giving it 155 mph winds came out a short time before official landfall (I believe they issue advisory updates every hour when it is near land, so that would have made it half an hour before landfall). But you never know, I didn't think they'd downgrade El Reno to an EF3! And whatever happens, it truly was a devastating, monster storm.
For you to share this was amazing and many thanks. You risked you life for this. It was hell on earth for the poor people living through that. Up here in Pa if these hurricanes are headed our way they most likely weaken or end up as tropical depressions. Our worst one that I can remember was that hurricane Sandra. The eye was over somewhere in New York, some flooding, trees down, damaged done to buildings but not the 100 + winds. We have no idea up here what it's like to really survive a real hurricane. God bless you all and all prayers.
Going through hurricane Michael, it's hard to believe that nature can create something so devastating.. Only time in my life I was scared... Two hours of winds of 140 to 170 mph.... In the wall of the eye it was hell on earth... People talk about the homes and buildings destroyed, but the heartbreaking thing to see was no tree over 10ft. Tall remained... Not a leaf on a tree, nothing but bare wasteland.. As if a bomb went off for 75 miles inland. The countryside will take decades to recover.
This was honestly hard to watch... One of the worst days of my life, 8 months pregnant, trees hitting our home and vehicles. We lost everything that day.
Amazing S2! Heavy rain or light rain noise are very good for the mind, because it relaxes, in addition to removing anxiety, it gives you sleep deep and delicious, I love to hear the sound of rain and the noise of the storm on the roof of the house, it's very comforting, is anyone else like me?
I live in cottonwood, Alabama which is about an hour and a half from where he's standing in that garage and our town got torn apart. Michael was a crazy storm and the worst one I've ever endured. Still remember it like it was yesterday.

Crazy cause I was in this and lost everything and this my first time watching the highlights of it since 🤕 #Blessed❣️
What were you driving I'm shocked the vehicle didn't get blown away.
Probably a Porch.
Whatever he was driving, I promise you he can turn the traction control off!! Check out his El Reno video - the traction control in his car almost cost him his life.
A tank
Moped
@TakeAmericaBackfromISRAEL I can totally see some guy drinking a beer on his dislodged porch as it is blown down the road. LOL
Don’t forget: Hurricanes often bring tornadoes along with em, that’s fun
Tornados also bring huge hailstorms. I'm talking about baseball size.
We had no time with Michael
I live in a city where we don't usually get hurricanes, but since 2015 we almost got hit by 4, the first one died 200 miles in the ocean, one of them caused 3-4 days of moderate rain, they all was cat4, during all of this, I stayed home which is half a mile from the beach and almost nobody got out of the city and some people were waiting for it to come on the beach
With tornadoes you are lucky to get 20 seconds notice
It was horrible enough that the
NHC said that they will never use the name Michael again for a hurricane.
It was a cool storm. Wish I would have been there. I would have just ridden it out in the car outside and not have gone in the garage. Tyndall AFB and Mexico Beach got the brunt of it.
Yup! It's right up there with Andrew and Katrina.
Agreed. I'm in Ft. Lauderdale and was expecting a doozy. Didn't even blow over my chair.
Anytime I hear the storm talked about it's never brought up how truly devastating it was.
I think this is a favorite of mine. It felt almost reassuring to be in that garage and be able to watch the force of that wild beast! Well done!
Scary stuff!
its not cool to ride it out, I thought it would be cool, my opinion changed real quick when outter bands we snapping tree's like a pencil.
Unbelievable. We just moved from there in 2014, still have many friends there, thank God, they are all physically ok, emotionally, not so much. :(
Good time to move back, they are rebuilding and prices are down.
J B prices are not down. There is a scarcity here!
The power is absolutely
incredible. I am not far east of there, only 5 miles inland, and did not evacuate, but thanks to these videos shared I certainly will in the future.
They changed the buildings codes in south Florida after Andrew
Wow! Unbelievable how terrifying the weather can be. Thank you for risking it all to do this. Prayers to all that were affected by this storm.
Great footage. You risked your life for this and I think that's amazing. Thank you for doing this so that we can experience this as well!
Its a good audio recording as well as video much appreciated..
As I sit here and watch this I can appreciate the risk you took to get this footage ! I pray for those families who have suffered the Warith of Michael!
The most cinematic and best recorded video of a real life storm ever
Best Hurricane video I've ever seen. Sell this to the Weather Channel.
So does YT still demonetize storm videos?? I have my videos in the eye wall also I'd like to upload also. What a ride it was!
Miranda Brooks - he could potentially donate to hurricane relief funds. Some UA-camrs help out in that way.
This was the most terrifying thing to live through. Going outside in the calm of the eye and seeing the churning wall of clouds all around us is something I’ll never forget.
Amazing footage. Lakeland FL here. I love storms, and hurricanes, so this really reminds me of their horror and beauty.
This just shows how powerful hurricanes can be
Yeah, I'm sure they could probably get stonger.
@Peter Rabitt Michael had winds exceeding 150 mph.
In panama they got recording that the sustained winds were 177 an with gust 204 i was scared i was gonna die in my home a tree fell on the house it was scary when half our roof was gone an we can hear everything but too scared to turn the corner too look
but not stronger than EF5 Tornado
@@MdRasel-mk7ys hurricanes kill more people and do more damage than tornadoes e5 included most tornadoes touch down in rural areas where not many people live or cities are developing. Hurricanes hit major cities every year. it's not even fair to compare...
Now this is the best footage of these storms I've ever seen, Thanks!
Wow! Thanks Dan! That was the most intense storm so far!~ Good thing it passed through quickly and didn't linger around for days, like Harvey did! Be safe! God bless you! Nick
Thank you!
Very relaxing and calming heavy rain and thunder sounds to listen to. Great for playing in the background while you rest or sleep. Thanks!
The day everything in my life changed.
Same

THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST HURRICANE VIDEO OUT THERE!!!!!!! NO ONE WILL EVER TOP THIS!!!!!!
INTENSE!!!!! Thank you for your upload . Your bravery (and living through it) for filming this incredible Hurricane Michael is crazy hut outstanding......
Thank you!
I was in hurricane Michael one hour north of where this was filmed. It’s amazing how that sound still gives me the chills. Sounds like an f-15 being revved up over and over.
Myyyyyyy goooooodnesssssssss ! This is epic man, one of the best coverage I've seen, Scaaaaaaryyyyyyy !
Amazing. Definitely one of the best hurricane clips I’ve ever seen. The sound is incredible, thanks for risking your life to capture 🙏💥
I’ve never seen a strong hurricane like this, but when Sandy hit, even at that low category/power, I distinctly remember the howl that it brought with it and it was like nothing I’ve heard before. It was like the entire sky was making the noise, as opposed to just hearing wind.
You always seem to be right in the thick of things Dan, and as always with some of the best vids. Thanks!
As someone who was in Panama City when this happened ( we didn't leave and still live there), this is pretty much how it was, yes
Wow. It wouldn't even seem right to call this "rain." It's just a blast cannon of mist. Very good production. This is professional quality documentation.
ASMR : Hurricane wind of 155mph
First thing. You have incredible bravery to record inside such a powerful storm. Second the power mother nature posses is awing, this hurricane is such a powerful thing and sustained for such a long time. Its like being inside a f3 tornado for hours. Wow
This is insane! Mother nature is amazing, thanks for sharing.
This is probably the best quality video that ive seen uploaded yet.
Wow that is some serious footage. Brutal.
Definitely one of the best hurricane video i have ever seen. Thanks.
The eyewall was like a high level F2 (F3 in gusts)tornado that lasted almost 2 hours. Wow.
I think some of the gusts were probably in the F4 wind range. Sustained winds were already solid F3 range!!!
I think the latest said 190 gust?
The thing is, is that we don't actually know the difference between 200mph winds in a tornado and 200MPH winds in a hurricane. In a tornado it's much more complex, moving directions, incredible updraft lower pressure etc. So comparing them is really comparing apples to oranges. We don't know if the windspeed estimates on the EF scale are accurate either. It's just an estimation.
I always wanted to saw a Hurricane... Thanks for making this video....
You just driving around like normal lol
One of the best footage I have seen yet. Good job!
Remember it like it was yesterday craziest thing I’ll ever experience in my life
Awesome footage...Dan you're so courageous documenting this dangerous storm. Kudos to you!

Me : "Yeah, i trust you"
That was great video. I lived threw many storms living in Central Fla. but none of them were stronger than a Cat 2. I could not appreciate what a Cat 5 was until I watched your video. Great job. I Pray that everyone made it out of there safely.
I take my hat of to you for braving the storm and sharing this incredible footage. I live in Australia so in my book this looks terrifying
Thank you!
You've clearly never been to Northern parts of Australia, they get monster sized Cyclones.
It most certainly was terrifying. I’ve never in my life heard such a sound as that wind. The eye went over my house!
I remember the great black out of 2011 all too well😩 4 long days with no power & lost 2 coworkers. Greetings from Huntsville✌
EF4 tornadoes have winds (166-200 mph)
302 km/h to 337 km/h
I was in the eyewall right side of Hurricane Charley 2004 , Will never forget that experience.
Im very sure that the post-analysis of this storm will upgrade it to a 5. the 155mph reading was 2 hours before landfall, and it was explosively intensifying in the time between the reading and landfall. the damage and video also support that in my eyes. What a monster storm.
Great video though, well done!
Alex Lubbers how strong do you think the winds got ?
I agree. Cat 5.
Thank you!
If there's an award for videography this definitely deserve one. great gob
“You know anything about this building?” “No”
“It’s rated for a 4 hurricane”
“Well this is it”
For you to share this was amazing and many thanks.
Ayyy I was in this . I’m from Panama City! We just finished repairs last year and the hurricane was in 2018
Awesome footage and a very well put together video!
Thank you!
Thank you for risking your life for this footage. I was thoroughly entertained. 👍
This was honestly hard to watch... One of the worst days of my life, 8 months pregnant, trees hitting our home and vehicles. We lost everything that day.
I hope your baby is okay.

Amazing S2! Heavy rain or light rain noise are very good for the mind, because it relaxes, in addition to removing anxiety, it gives you sleep deep and delicious, I love to hear the sound of rain and the noise of the storm on the roof of the house, it's very comforting, is anyone else like me?
I live in Panama City!! 850 strong
I live in cottonwood, Alabama which is about an hour and a half from where he's standing in that garage and our town got torn apart. Michael was a crazy storm and the worst one I've ever endured. Still remember it like it was yesterday.
4:53 For a sec I thought that car was soundproof AF
Looks like a lovely sunny day
I survived Irma and Maria i live in Puerto Rico.Maria hit us and gave us like 12 to 14 hours of pain.
12 to 14 hrs?
I think Puerto Rico is stil in pain
@@mikewolfe386 That was the problem Maria stayed too long over PR. Everybody was asking when it is going to stop. Terrible monster hurricanes.
10/10/2018 most worst day of my life as well as a sad day because this town is all I know/ knew lord knows I can't tell you how much I pure cried
