The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook contains numerous light loads. Personally, I use 25 grains of IMR4227 or H4227 and a 170 grain gas check bullet for a MV of around 2000 FPS, and is adequate to function the action of a Remington Model 81.

That's some good off hand shooting. The "Long range" thing is all the rage these days, but Ive never been one to follow trends. Love me some off hand shooting with iron sights. Best hunting practice in the world.

for more fun,use a shot timer and try hitting the same targets at faster and faster speeds. 99s are so underrated.

Yea you're right. I'm just a steel target shooter, and wanted to shoot my softer steel targets without damage. Also wanted to shoot with hard cast lead.

Using the lighter bullets and charge makes sense for plinking but I've never thought the recoil of full power loads in mine as being bad at all. In fact , it's one of the desirable aspects of the .300 cartridge - low recoil in a 6.8lb rifle. I use 37 grains of 4064 with 165gr boat tails. Fine accuracy and a light kick.
    EDIT: I meant to write 7.8lbs - not 6.8lbs.
