Sweet rifle! I'm a Winchester fan and been in the market for 38-55 1892, though recently at an estate sale and opportunity of a beautiful 1903 savage 1899a in 38-55 (nib) never fired couldn't pass it up! Rare caliber and condition bluing and wood 100% for a 121 year old rifle is amazing art!
Mine is from 1954 and chambered in the infamous 300 Savage. It was gifted to me by my Grandmother in 1963. I reload for it and my favorite load is the Cowboy Load using Trail Boss Powder. I don't hunt these days so shooting the Savage with light loads is a lot of fun and also cheep. I have a good amount of brass but it is still available and in a pinch, you can use 308 brass and resize it for 300 Savage.
I also have a 1952 99eg. Was my great grandfathers in 300 savage. Its mint. He used it to hunt moutain lions! I use it today hunting in NH. Had a custom scope mount made by BigFoot and have a nikon monarch 1-4 german reticle. My favorite rifle. Easy to carry in thick woods and just sexy
I have three. One factory drilled and tapped chambered in .308 from the 50’s, a takedown version chambered in 250-3000 from 1920 and a later detachable magazine version that has been re-barreled and modified for .357 mag. In my opinion the pistol grip models with the hand checkering and the slimmer forend are quite handsome.
Paid $225 at a pawn shop for my 300 Savage made in the mid 1950s. Great investment for my favorite rifle. It just "fits" me perfectly and it's a real beauty. I am at a loss to understand the "ugly" remark. That 300 Savage packs a good punch. My rifle has a pistol grip which makes it easier to handle. It also has been neatly drilled and tapped for a Williams scope mount that really adds to the rifle's useability. These rifles are well loved and definitely going up in price.
People dont understand the beauty of a mechanically satisfying action. I cant stop servicing it inside and out to keep it buttery smooth, its such a well designed rifle lol hard agree, those other ppl must be comparing it to the aesthetic qualities of like a winchester where its more barrel-heavy which im not preferential towards tbt
I picked one up back in October of 2023 Mine is a Savage Model 99 EG variant Manufactured in 1952 It’s somewhat rare because the rotary magazine is neither brass or blued but colored case harden Chambered in 300 savage (haven’t had trouble finding ammo several of my LGS carry it) My savage is outfitted with a Lyman flip up peep sight and a flip up rear sight I did use it for deer season this past November
I had a .308 version of the model 99. I didn't know about the round counter on the side. Great rifle, harvested both whitetail and mule deer with it. Sold it when I got orders to England. I feel really dumb about not knowing about the round counter.
Leupold still makes a single piece scope base that mounts to the top of the receiver. I use that with some Leupold rings to support a Zeiss 3-9. I rebarreled it to 338 Federal though.
I have a model 99F in .308. It's accurate and easy to carry. Recoil is a little stiff because it weighs a little over 6 pounds loaded. I installed a Lyman #57 peep sight on it. I disagree with it being ugly.
I think you somewhat under estimated this rifle. The 303 and 30-30 are ballistic twins and MANY still love the 30-30 because a very high percent of deer are killed under 100 yards . Yea it doesn’t do much any other rifle wouldn’t do but for me it’s , all steel and wood , no stamped parts and with the rounded bottom receiver it carry’s very nicely. It’s beauty is in the eye of its owner and that’s all the praise it needs.
They sure did. They didn't make them in that chamber at first. Because the 30-30 didn't exist at the time, Author Savage was designing the model we now know as a Savage 99.
I purchased a 308 Model 99E in 1970 in Naples Italy. A gun salesman came on board my Navy ship. I also purchased a 30 30 Winchester with a gold saddle ring. The 308 was $100.00 and the 30 30 was $78.00
Good video.. except for the "kind of ugly"!! That brings into question your entire outlook on the world. 🙂 To be fair, that gun has a lot of wear. If you held a high condition one without heavily sanded/refinished stocks and with the original mirror bluing.. they are gorgeous guns. Every comment you mentioned about the 303 Savage and 100 yds (I'd argue 150-200 yds) is also true for the 30-30, which I think you did say. The great thing about the Savage 1899/99 is that it went on to be chambered in many more higher power cartridges - which other 30-30 rifles of the day couldn't do. 22HP, 250-3000, 300 Savage, 243 Win, 308 Win, 358 Win, 284 Win, 375 Win, 22-250.. it handled them all. Great job!
This was your grandfather's big game rifle in north America, Big game dangerous hunting in Africa is done 75 yards and in, The old timers to us were better hunters, The 30 30 is Said to have killed everything worldwide. The 300 savage is a 30 30 magnum. The only down side, certain repair parts are a custom order from a custom gun shop like, Down east guns. On the internet . You can reform 308 brass to 300 savage, It will make you , more independent, smarter for doing so. Any 308 under 180 grains can be gotten anywhere, Yea, I got 1
@@Huntinggearguy exactly what I’m doing currently but I’d really like to get one made up new. Going to see about possibly getting one imported from the US if I can’t find someone with a stock duplicator closer to home.
Well, I don't believe the savage Rifle looks ugly, I think it's a nice looking rifle and as far as why are they so cheap well you get what you pay for , you can find some junk out there for cheap but if you want a good one it's gonna cost you a few bucks, and you compare it to the Winchester, the only Winchester's that are worth anything are pre-64 models so is that what you're comparing it to, another issue you said if you can find 303 rounds, make your own rounds and when it comes to the 3030 with flat nose, pull the projectiles and put in a spear point bullet and then use it in your Savage 99 that's chambered for a 3030 ! PS. Savage barrels are of higher quality and generally extremely straight, don't get me wrong. I like Winchester's and Marlin's too, but if I had a choice, I would go with the Savage 99 any day of the week ! Enjoy your video, have a great day
I disagree, it's a beautiful rifle very accurate, hangs perfect, well ballance rifle. I wish they would come back with it in 243,7mm-08, 308 and i think 300wsm would be awesome! And with these new cnc machines they have now it should be cheaper to make .
i had a 99 in 308 sights were fine and good can you scope hell yea very easy side mount were they nice looking yes are they cheep to buy NO they are in fact very collectable i have seen them as high as a 1000 bucks depending on condition you were lucky at 500 bucks but mine i had you would never get for 500
Gun shows and used market…and reloaders. I found one with a broken stock and forestock this year with 90 rounds for $150. Unfortunately I can’t find a replacement stock
Put it in your hand and walk around with it. Sold. Balanced empty or loaded. Carry it all day. Try it with a Winchester or Marlin, you'll hate the gun in 5 minutes. Maybe why the sling was invented.
"a little bit ugly"...? A t the time it was sleek and technically revolutionary functional design. Tubers that compare a 100 plus year old rifle to today's plastic nonsense are ridiculous. Want ugly...look in the mirror...🤪
Had one (250-3000) for 45 years, absolutely loved it. Sold it to friends for their son.

I wish Savage Arms reintroduced this cool magnificent rifle.
I’d definitely get a new one.
It would be very expensive, and with $300 some odd Axis prices, sales would be abismal
Got a 1920 250-3000 take down. Works perfect still today.

Yup. Have one manufactured in 1900, marked "Savage 30". Early 30-30 barrels were marked this way until a lawsuit from Winchester
I would love one in 358 win..... or 375 win....Great 200 yds game rifle...cool rifle.

Kinda ? Really the best lever action ever in it's time!
i have one in .250-3000 savage from an uncle with a scope very hard to find ammunition for it and ammunition cost a lot.

I know some in Texas that have used the 222 on texas deer
This dude is a half-wit!😂👎
I absolutely love my 1920s era '99 in .250-3000 and the "new" one in ,308. I do have to give Spencer some serious credit for the lever design though.

Impossible to find new stocks for mine in Canada seemingly. Bad stock design but I love the gun and really want to use it.
Yeah they don't make them anymore so you have to find a clapped out old savage 99 and salvage the stock

Savage did make Mod. 99s in 30-30 Win.
I have one in high power 22
The looks are an acquired taste. Interesting first deer story I won’t bore you with but almost involved this particular gun.👍🏻

Pimped out Ruger PC carbine, review coming soon
@@Huntinggearguy it looks fantastic. can't wait for the review. Cheers mate
Anybody know where to find savage 300 ammo ???
It's really tough. My advice: find someone who is selling the whole gun and see if they have any ammo. Or reload
@@Huntinggearguy I found one shop that had two boxes last year.... Now it's nowhere to be found

$500, I never seen one for less than $800 and ones in good shape are more expensive.
