Yes but I don’t think he programmed the machine to do those continues drum variations. Because that sequencer isn’t easy for doing that kind of stuff so I think he just sampled the sounds and used a software sampler.

That snare sounds very suspiciously like the Volca Beats. Actually many of the sounds do. I have to believe that some of this old timer's DNA ended up in the Volca product many years later.
It could be interesting to compare the schematics. I have the KPR-77 and did quite a few volca mods for people but never came to this conclusion. Either way, I love the thwack of the SD!
Welp, now I'm in love with that stupid little box. It's kind of screaming to be run through a multiband distortion box or something, isn't it? Thanks, Florian. :/
I love seeing the gear reviewed that i only saw in magazines ages ago and have forgotten about. I lived in a small town at the time and the best we had was a guitar shop with expensive synths and only one or two drum machines at a time.
I LIKE how this drum machine sounds. Florian, you should make an Ep with it. I'm loving the electro vibes you're getting with your demo tracks in this video.
I modded mine very gently. You can get a much better kick sound by using a smaller capacitor in the kicks impulse section. I replaced C14 8.2nf cap with a 2nf cap. Now its got some attack and beef. Also almost all the sounds can be improved by twisting the trimpots on the PCB. Most are marked on the PCB for what they do but still a good idea to find the schematic online.

I had one of these with the grey carry bag, always liked the character of the sounds - especially those super interesting metallic hats. Thankfully I sampled everything before I sold it!
A friend lent me one back in '86 before I bought my 606. I still love the snare on the 77 and so when I bought my 606 I was disappointed to find it was not as beefy as the 77 snare. However, I was never that enamoured with the hats and cymbal on the 77 preferring the 606 instead. Great video, demo and choice of bad gear Florian, thanks.

Still rooting for the Korg Monotribe to be covered, amazing potential (all analog groovebox goodness) held back by a weak as all heck kick and no way to enter notes on the synth than the monotron-esque ribbon controller. Sounds amazing in its element though.
I totally forgot I had one of these, it was a strange but charming machine indeed. I was a bit younger, I think nowadays I could have utilized its weirdness in a few musical scenarios
In the late 90s when I was doing my all-analogue (mostly) (well, all non-computer) music, I owned two KPR-77 units synced via a KMS-30, (which I still have) to the master clock (a CSQ-600) (which I still want to get rid of, in London, if someone will take the SH-09 with it). The only thing I used the KPR-77 for was the pair of trigger outs on each, which are s-trig, used to clock an SQ-10 and trig an MS-10 and MS-20. I never used it for the sounds (matchbox snare) because I had a TR-808 and TR-606, but also because programming in the trigs on the pair of KPR-77s was about enough work for one decade thanks.
Awesome video as usual! I really do like those drum sounds, they are very analog sounding! The MIDI-less demo and IDMbient song at the end were especially cool.
I found one at a flea market about 15 years ago. It was dirt cheap (12€) so I instantly bought it. For me it was an ideal drum machine back then, because my synth of choice was the PolySix which can be triggered with the KPR-77 in the arpeggio. Mine is far from a mint condition: some caps of the sliders are missing, the start button got lost in time and replaced by someone with limited craftmanship and worst of all, the buttons are wobbely as all hell which makes it frustrating to use sometimes. But I love it anyway.
Thought of 2 things to say about the drum machine, and 1 about the video production, but instead I'm going with: "I swear that AudioPilz profile pic grows another set of headphones every time I look closely 🤔"
wow, you did it again!!!! another bit of oldskool kit I used to own...that is actually quite easy to use, but sounds pretty naff without lots of external processing...what I did like about it was the sync, connected to my Kawai R100 it run at 48ppq while the Kawai runs at 24ppq(like Roland) this made for so funky half speed drup patterns which produces some excellent results if you're into experimenting which I was not back in 92', (If only I knew then, what I've learned since!!) when I picked one up for £85 ffrom Carlsbro UK, sold it for decent money(£200 poss £220) in 1997...I think the current used price is a little high, seeing that the Kawai R100 is a monster of a drum machine with a huge feature set and brilliant sounds, it's hugely moddable and sells for about the same on the used market... Nnnnoooo!!! I love the KPR-77 - analogue, but with a different tone to the Roland TR series. It has a much more sophisticated sequencer than the 606 and 808, albeit without the immediacy. The sync thing is not a problem when connecting to Roland kit, just set the time signature to 2/4 and you still have the same number of steps per pattern. The hate seems to stem from the terrible manual, a classic of badly translated Japanese that I tried to alleviate by posting a quick programming guide online back in the 1990s (and which can still be found on the KPR's Vintage Synth webpage).

another kick ass review bro . those black and white flashing graphics kicked in a good amount of epileptic seizures that took me back to early Atari game flashbacks. you can use that if you want hahaha
Who would deny midi? Longer than a mini but shorter than a maxi. Ideal for those 1971 fashion-conscious ladies who don't want their skirts to be NSFW. 😎
Just when Friday afternoon seems interminable and I’m struggling to find a reason to live, I remember that Bad Gear has dropped a new episode, and peace returns to my battered soul…
I love it! I bought several KPR-77s around 2000 because I kept finding them for dirt cheap because apparently many people didn't know how to operate them. "Like new, $50, don't know if it works". I sold the rest to pay bills but kept one and enjoy breaking it out from time to time. I did a few minor voice mods to mine. Nowadays people who like the retro dirty analog sound would probably enjoy a Volca Beats instead. The main problem most people have with the unit is comparing it to the TR-606 instead of learning its own idiosyncrasies.
Thumbs for that weird mid-roll jam, with the strange major scale...I seriously haven't heard anything like that before! Super cool. I couldn't wrap my ears around it until the bass came in. Very nice. :)
ooooohhhh so dirty.... 5:46 :-P :-P I wasn't expecting you to sorta go DnB with the rhythm on the last track. I definitely don't know that I'd go run out and snag one of these ASAP, but What you did with that Rocket and this together would be genuinely awesome. I'd buy THAT for a dollar!

another kick ass review bro . those black and white flashing graphics kicked in a good amount of epileptic seizures that took me back to early Atari game flashbacks. you can use that if you want hahaha
Thank you!!! Hope you're fine
Not great, not terrible :D
You know how to run a nuclear power plant;)
@@AudioPilz You only need to know one simple rule: There's never graphite on the floor!
Great episode, and always good to see Petr Valek pop up! ;)
Thanks! Petr is the GOAT!
Who wants to be in my synth aficionado club?
Smoking jacket and double jab required (no midi deniers or modular wierdos) 👍
I'm in!!!
Who would deny midi? Longer than a mini but shorter than a maxi. Ideal for those 1971 fashion-conscious ladies who don't want their skirts to be NSFW. 😎
@@AudioPilz no jabby 4 me....no way hosea
REally love the IDM jam at the end
Thank you!!!
Just when Friday afternoon seems interminable and I’m struggling to find a reason to live, I remember that Bad Gear has dropped a new episode, and peace returns to my battered soul…
So heartwarming to hear that, thanks!
Yup, prices keep creeping up tho
2 months ago I found one at the fleamkt with the black case , I never thought I'd see it on here lol
Great find!
Damn that last jam was so beautiful. Any chance on getting a full version? I NEED IT!
Thanks! Just uploaded a full version to Patreon (no plug;)
Thumbs for that weird mid-roll jam, with the strange major scale...I seriously haven't heard anything like that before! Super cool. I couldn't wrap my ears around it until the bass came in. Very nice. :)
or rather...until the chords came in! ...it starts with bass!
Thanks!
ooooohhhh so dirty.... 5:46 :-P :-P
I wasn't expecting you to sorta go DnB with the rhythm on the last track. I definitely don't know that I'd go run out and snag one of these ASAP, but What you did with that Rocket and this together would be genuinely awesome. I'd buy THAT for a dollar!
Thank you!!!
ok, need more info on the "Fellow Synth Aficionados" Please!
It's Petr Valek and his dudes. I wanted to link him but YT didn't play along
Finally a TV show I have seen in the intro
That one is pretty bleak but really good
Yet another great episode of Bad (or maybe not so bad?) Gear!
I'd love to see a video on the Boss DR-880!
Great suggestion, thanks! That one is on my list!
Your digitakt can be set to spit out 48din from the midi out too. In the midi config
Thanks for pointing that out!
The jam at the end was so sick
Thank you!!!
