Common failure on Focuses from '00-'08. How Common? This video is the FIRST time I replaced it. I just had to replace it AGAIN for the same reason.
Universal antenna replacement kits at the parts stores ARE NOT COMPATIBLE.
A screw goes through the banjo-style connector and into the antenna base on the roof, then the mast or "whip" screws onto that. Whatever you do, DON'T LOSE THAT SCREW!!!!
'99-'02 Mercury Cougars have a similar setup.

Hey man. Just wanted to say your video was a huge help. We dropped one of the screws and our lives TOTALLY SUCKED until we found it. Haha
Thank you Adam. You saved me a week of frustration fumbling around for parts, which tools to use, how to disassemble, then reassemble the light housing to get to the antenna base. Your instructions were, clear, simple, straightforward, and very much appreciated. Your video was very helpful.
Just broke mine today on a Ford Fiesta while cleaning snow off the roof. Thankfully, seeing this video it seems replacing it with a new one is not really hard at all! Thanks for the vid.
I just wanted to say this was a real help and probably saved me a lot of money by not having to take it to the garage and now am able to do it myself.
Thanks for this video...ordered the parts online, arrived in two days.Ten minutes and $30 in parts is a huge savings over what the dealer quoted me....thanks again!!
Thank you SO much for this!!! My boyfriend and I got the parts right from Ford, and only had to make one run to the hardware store to get that torx driver. I learned a lot and we fixed something that broke a year and a half ago, also because of snow. Thanks again dude!
Thank you!
I'm babysitting my sister-in-law's 2003 Focus for the winter. All was fine until, BAM! snowbrush. (Just like you said in your video.) At first, I was thinking that she'd had to live with that, because I'm not taking down the headliner and who knows what else to fix this.
Thankfully, I decided to see what the situation actually IS and found your excellent, straight-forward video. I don't think it took me 15 minutes to get this done. (Not counting the 10 minutes finding the dropped screw.)
I bought the "Votex 2000-2007" Base & Antenna kit from Amazon and am pretty happy with the result.
Of course, one of the first things I did was drop one of the trim plate screws. Luckily, I found it or, yeah, my life would have sucked. :-)
A couple notes:
- A magnetized screw driver would have been good. You can find the magnet things to magnetize the tip of pretty much any driver just about anywhere like Home Depot, something I wish I had thought of in the first place. It took 10 minutes to find where the stupid screw had bounced to when I dropped it...
- I put dielectric grease on the base threads and on the threads for the antenna. This *may* help to improve the signal and also *may* help prevent corrosion.
- I was working alone and found that the new base kept rising up as I tried to thread the screw into it. I put a strip of duct tape over it and to the roof of the car long enough for me to get the screw threaded in and the base snugged down.
+John Notellin I may be somewhat challenged, but don't see a way to Edit. It probably really doesn't matter, but the kit was purchased for and installed on a *2005* Ford Focus...
This was very helpful. I just purchased a 2005 Ford Focus (with a broken antenna, of course) and was able to replace the broken antenna in less that 10 minutes. Thank you so much!
Grinning ear to ear! Same exact car...same exact situation. Pushing 3 feet of snow off my Focus with a push broom seemed like a good idea at the time. That was 2 years ago. Now I know how to fix it! Thanks, man!
Thank you for these great instructions! I am glad to report that My life is NOT going to suck by following your instructions and the radio works great again. We bought the used Focus Sans Antenna from a used car lot and never realized it was broken since it looked like our stubby antenna on another car.
I just bought my 2002 Focus last week, just noticed the antenna was broken....didn't know when I bout it, didn't know what to look for, thanks for the DIY video, now I can change this by myself
this video was AWESOME and 100% perfect. It took me all of 7 minutes to remove and replace the antenna base and put it all back together. the dealer wanted to charge me over 3 hours of work and about $500-600 to do the same thing. I am very grateful for this, I am very handy and like to do small repairs myself. Thanks you once again for posting this very helpful video.
No problem!
Mine just broke today, Noticed when i looked at it it had many mini-cracks on it. Great to see it is a cheap fix!! Thank you
GREAT VIDEO!! Very clear, informative and funny .. was laughing and learning at the same time. EXCELLENT!!
Thanks!
This video was excellent. I had no idea how to tackle this problem, and with your video I completed it in 2 minutes. My 2002 Focus does not have the additional obstacle of taking off the "ring" ; once the light is off, the antenna screw (thanks for not of T20) is straight up. A+ help!!
Just followed your instructions to replace the dry-wroughted and rusted antenna on my 2000 model. They were so easy that even this chick was able to fix it by herself. :) Thanks!!!
No problem!
Just did the replacement. Took 10 minutes and I have 10 thumbs. I found the parts on E-bay. Thanks for the great video Adam!
Thanks for the video. I have no DIY skills and was able to do this with your video. Hardest part was removing the interior light. Saved me going to the main dealer and paying a fortune. Thanks again
I've just been able to change my aerial base unit this morning thanks to this video. Thank you so much Adam for posting this and giving such clear, easy-to-follow instructions. Consider yourself bought a virtual beer ( or tipple of your choice ).
I shall be thanking you again no doubt on my next long radio-enabled journey.
Why, thank you for the kind words! I'm glad I was able to help!
A really helpful video, I have a 1996 Ford Mondeo here in the UK but the principal is exactly the same, got the parts off Amazon, the right bit from Halfords and BOOM, 5 minutes and done....and avoided all three mistakes where my "life could have really sucked"...Thank you!!!
Great video! I just bought an '04 Focus, with this very issue. Now, I'm going to go to Amazon and buy my parts!
Thanks mate. That was very helpful. Now I can change my antenna base and my life will not suck.
Thanks for your video. my old antenna was banging against the top of my car, and so i went to unscrew it, and guess what happened? it snapped, and my life sucked. but then i remembered your video and have the amazon robots scurrying to get me a replacement antenna. THX!!!
Thank you! Every darn Focus I've owned has had a broken antenna! The last one I bought like that, now I can fix it!
Thanks! Our Antenna base was broken off too and today I replaced it. It was valuable to know how to get the plastics out without breaking anything (2:10). The whole process is easy to do and works well now. (The hardest part was to get an antenna that fits the base because thread sizes often were specified incorrectly by sellers.)
I followed this today (albeit on my Ford Mondeo) uses the same antenna connector.
It took me all of ten minutes!
Thanks.
Thanks dude, it saved my life. I have Fiesta 2005 and I should change my antenna as it has broken same as yours. So i looked your video and all parts are same with focus :) THANKS
Thank you for this! I bought a used Focus, and guess what was missing? :) Thanks to your video and links, I was able to get the right parts and replace them easily. I like the shorty much better than the factory antenna. It's also good to know these antennas snap off easily - I'll be extra careful when cleaning snow off my car this winter!
One thing I forgot to add to my comment, Adam. My Focus is the SES model, and has an overhead console/garage door-opener holder which is all part of the overhead light assembly. I had one extra screw to remove--I accessed it by opening the cover on the garage door-opener cavity. (Phillips head screw) My antenna now works fine now. Your video was a great help, thank you!
Thanks for the extra info, glad I could help!
Thanks for the extra info...this is what I am facing too.
2006 SES here too, also had to do that. But this video was a HUGE help!
Thank you for posting this. We got ours fixed quickly thanks to your help. Thanks!!
Thank you ! Very helpful.i just ordered the base and the antenna on eBay and watching again your video
Great video! Took all of 5 minutes to replace the base. I didn't even have to remove the trim, either! ('06 Focus). Thanks!
Ordered my parts from Ebay last night! Looking forward to getting my music back and also not paying an arm and a leg to have someone else do it. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for posting this video! You saved me about $300. That's what the dealership told me it would cost. They told me they had to drop the headliner to get to the antenna.
What year is your focus?
What year is your focus?
My daughter and I just did this to her Ford Focus after watching your video. Easy peasy once you know how. Thanks.
Brilliant, thanks. I didn't know about the shorter aftermarket antenna. Lost mine in a heavy, wet snow dump in Winnipeg. I cleared off 18 inches of snow and found my antenna on the ground along with the snow
Craig Fisher yep, that's what happened to me!
I successfully replaced the antenna on my 2000 Focus car with your movie. Thank you very much!
Thanks for the walk through! This was so helpful. Saved me $$$!
Hey Man, thanks much for the vid. It gives me confidence that I can do it!!
Thanks you. You saved me money. Watched this video order the parts and was able to repair this on my son's car.
Perfect! thanks. Found a cheap replacement kit with wiring and everything at Walmart for under 10 bucks. Only needed the mast. Got the OEM base off of Ebay for a couple bucks. The masts on Ebay that advertised as universal did not work as you said. Wish I saw this before I ordered it but the seller refunded the money anyway. Great directions!
just replaced mine in the uk on my focus , great step by step instructions, thanks!
Thanks for a fine detailed view on how to repair/replace my antenna base.
good one dude, my life sucked for a couple of days after I bought a second hand mondeo with a broken aerial base, but not any more :)
Thank you!! Great, funny and informative instructional video. Ours broke off with the snow brush too!
Thanks for making this video, waiting for my parts to come in.
Awesome! Thanks man, Just snapped my antennae off today on a garage door. You saved me a shit ton of time and money dealing with the dealership.
Bonus thanks for listing the part numbers and links!!!
No problem, dude!
Thank you! This video helped and made it so easy to replace it myself!
Thank you! Graet video! It's really helpful.
Greetings from Latvia!
Thank you Adam. The video was very useful to me.
I have a 2001 ford focus and my antenna is broke ,thanks for this video makes my job to fix it a lot easier :)
Thank you! This is just what I needed!
Exactly what happened this winter cleaning the roof snow - but I went another direction. I drilled out the piece in the antenna and also drilled out the piece in the roof mount, took a bolt the same thickness as the original piece that got broken, cut the head of the bolt and threaded it into the antenna and the other end into the mount. Viola a little more time consuming but a lot cheaper. But I do like your video it gave me the part number and also how much I had to remove to get to the roof mount Thanks
Getting ready to do mine. Very helpful
Hey, great video! I just bought an '05 Focus, and didn't notice that the antenna was broken off. The dealer had thoughtfully put the broken mast in the back seat, though. :D
Thanks! I feel like every part that could snap off did, on my 07' focus. So I'm slowly working through and fixing them.
My 1998 Focus 1 hatch's antenna looks exactly like that as well=))! Thanks for the useful video! Cheap and easy fixes. That's FORD..., that's why I still like it!
Thank you so much for the lesson... I like to do work on my car myself... Much appreciated!!!
Thanks a lot for this clip, definitely saved me a lot of time... cheers!!!!
Thank you for making this video. It was a breeze.
My UK spec aerial Base is just as temperamental, thanks for that, now if finally know how to replace it.
Thank You Very Much... Super Needed This Video.. No Radio Cause Antenna
So glad you made this because I have no antenna and my antenna base is rusted asf
Thanks for making my life easier
thanks for this video! greetings from Brazil!
Great video! Now I can fix my antenna.
Excellent videos & its Very useful, where the car owner itself can replace Antenna
Great video mate, i've just bought a Fiesta Zetec S with broken ariel so hopefully it'll be just as easy to remove.
Thanks just what i needed to know . Great vid
Thank you, just what I needed to know.
Thanks for the video Adam. I had the same with my UK Ford Focus and with the help of the video I replaced the aerial base. It's easy when you know how. Thanks.
Yep, no problem!
So right!!!! Just walked my mom with the ice/snow scrapper...😭 thanks for the video👊
Awesome vid! Ordered parts in Amazon, install took less than 5 minutes. I can finally listed to other stations besides NPR (which I hate)
Thanks for the tutorial! And props to you for simultaneously holding a phone while you one handed the project! I'm glad I watched this before attempting to replace my antenna on my own. Stupid me would have tried to pry the base off from the top with a screwdriver without undoing the screws from the interior. That would have been a disaster.
By the way I'm wondering since you ordered a kit with the short stubby mast if it affects the strength of your radio signal when tuning in a station? Thanks in advance!
Does that short aluminum antenna still get good reception ? I love the look of the shorter antenna but if I'm gonna have a problem pulling in stations I'd rather have the original antenna
Thank you so much, this is exactly what I was looking for! :)
No problem! I'm glad I was able to help!
Thank you for the video mate.Good job :-)
Thank you for the tutorial, damn winter!
Great video. Thanks alot. Snow brush killed mine also.
Well, I'm faced with the same predicament, so off to Ford I go and looking forward to putting your tutorial to good use.
Great vid....thnx for the advice...
Thanks very much for this!
I have watched countless d.i.y on here yours was fantastic easily explained and not speaking to people as thou they are thick... nice one Adam cheers pal...🇬🇧👍
Awesome tutorial! I have been worried about this repair since I bought the parts. The Ford dealer said I was going to have to pull the headliner to get to it. Strange how they haven't had to do this before when it seems like a common repair. If I had to do it again, I think it would literally take 5 minutes.
Very helpful. Thanks
Great video
THANKS!!!! I am about to do that for my mother inlaw...
this really helped even with a '13 ford fiesta, and it's a little easier. that small plastic plug which broke for me and as it started raining today, it started leaking inside the car.. it sucked really. Thanks a looot man.
No problem!
Really helped me! Tks!
Thanks Adam. Vid is a big help. Funny thing...I started typing "How to replace antenna..." and google went right to the Focus. Guess it's pretty common!
good job mate!
great video, helped alot!
How’s the radio reception with this?
Haha. 14 seconds in and I'm laughing. It WAS caused by one of those. My father-in-law did one hell of a good job on that one. :P Anyway, thanks for the video and links!
Great job! JUST what happened...My son whacked the antenna off his 2001 Focus with the snow brush.
Nice video...thx for help!
Just knocked mine off with a snow brush this morning. I want to get the shorty antenna but I'm worried I won't get radio reception as good as the factory antenna. How's the reception?
Thank you so much for this video. Now I know what that thingy that was on the passenger seat. The antenna isn't attached.
There is no snow here in Hawaii, but these break off just the same when get hit with a brush. Thanks for the video.
Is that stubby antenna any good? I've read reviews on the different ones, and they are mixed.
Thank you! 👍
